Guest: Adam Cramer is the founding Executive Director and present CEO of Outdoor Alliance, a national coalition of outdoor recreation advocacy groups that has breathed new life into the conservation movement by harnessing the outdoor community's passion for place and combining it with a modern approach to organizing and digital engagement. During his time as CEO, Adam has brought new sensibilities to conservation work that have resulted in hundreds of thousands more acres of protected landscapes, improved management for outdoor recreation, and thousands of outdoor enthusiasts awakened to conservation and advocacy work. He is an avid whitewater kayaker and mountain biker, but is always on the lookout for a good skatepark. Adam lives in Maryland with his wife and two kids   Show notes: On Friday, August 12, 2022, Congress passed the largest ever climate package in the Inflation Reduction Act, an absolute landmark piece of legislation. Channel Mastery has never done an episode on any sort of legislation before today; but know that this show was prioritized. Why? Because of the landmark impact that the IRA is destined to have on our businesses. What's more, this is a far-reaching (both in scope and timeframe) bill that will create new awareness among our consumers – the outdoor recreation enthusiast. Channel Mastery is 100-percent about understanding our brand fans and target consumers and this bill will ‘train' them to expect more responsible businesses and brand practices concerning climate mitigation going forward.    The bill is sweeping and complex, and we've procured the perfect guide for our episode today in Adam Cramer, the CEO of the Outdoor Alliance, the only non-profit organization in the U.S. that unites the voices of outdoor enthusiasts to conserve public lands and ensure those lands are managed in a way that embraces the human-powered experience. The Outdoor Alliance connects conservation with climate, which positions Adam's perspective as critical to you, Channel Mastery's executive audience of outdoor rec business leaders. The Outdoor Alliance is a coalition of national advocacy organizations that includes American Whitewater, American Canoe Association, Access Fund, International Mountain Bicycling Association, Winter Wildlands Alliance, the Mountaineers, the American Alpine Club, the Mazamas, the Colorado Mountain Club, and the Surfrider Foundation.    The Inflation Reduction Act will be on President Biden's desk by the time you listen to this show, but the interview you're about to hear in episode 192 is evergreen in that it underscores a tipping point moment in climate and conservation. Paul Krugman, Opinion Columnist with The New York Times, in his piece “Did Democrats just Save Civilization?” wrote: “This is a very big deal. The act isn't, by itself, enough to avert climate disaster. But it is a huge step in the right direction and sets the stage for more action in the years ahead. It will catalyze progress in green technology; its economic benefits will make passing additional legislation easier; it gives the United States the credibility it needs to lead a global effort to limit greenhouse gas emissions.” Senator John Hickenlooper (D) Colorado, summed up the bill in his newsletter by describing it as the largest climate rescue investment by any country ever.    The Outdoor Alliance website has informative summary blog posts about the IRA, outlining how the $373 billion funding package will mitigate climate change through investments that will accelerate our transition to clean energy. The bill also includes billions of dollars for wildfire mitigation, forest management, and conservation.    While this hard-fought legislative win most certainly benefits humanity as a whole, it's crucial to highlight what this means to the business of outdoor recreation and how we, as corporate citizens, have an opportunity and responsibility to step up and heap on awareness and visibility of what's going to emerge from this game-changing legislation. Whether it's sharing the details and impact of the IRA on the health of the planet and the places we cherish as outdoor recreationalists with our internal teams or on how your brand and reach can further the traction on climate change mitigation, the time to elevate this to our important stakeholders in our outdoor rec businesses is now.    Also, note that consumers will vote with their dollars more than ever before as the road to doing the right thing will be highlighted in the coming months and years, thanks to the IRA.    The Channel Mastery podcast is presented by Verde Brand Communications and Life Time, Inc., owner of the Sea Otter Classic and producer of the Sea Otter Classic Summit outdoor recreation executive gathering, taking place April 18-20, 2023, in Monterey, Calif.  Links: Show sponsors: Verde Brand Communications, Life Time, Inc.  The Outdoor Alliance website makes it easy to thank local / state Lawmakers and has numerous blog posts about climate and conservation, and the many bridges between the IRA and outdoor recreation The New York Times, Did Democrats just Save Civilization? Dirk Collins and Caroline Gleich Live from SummitX in Jackson, WY

A couple of weeks ago I participated in a ski retreat in Jackson Wyoming called SummitX, which brought together professionals at the convergence of tech, leadership, entrepreneurship, and adventure. The event focused on a whole lot of skiing powder (priorities straight right) and leadership development, and through intense workshops and in-depth conversations, I think it's safe to say everyone involved walked away a stronger leader and human being.  As part of the event, I got the opportunity to host a live recording of this podcast where I interviewed Dirk Collins and Caroline Gleich.    When I was conceptualizing this conversation and the event as a whole, I knew we would have something special with these two guests and thoughtful live audience, but I have to say - what we ended up with exceeded my expectations.    A couple of quick notes to listeners and then a little more about my guests.    So obviously doing an interview in front of a live audience is a little different then doing a 1 on 1 conversation in my living room. The first cool thing about a live show is the participation from the audience, so be sure to stay tuned in for the Q&A towards the end of the conversation. You'll also probably pick up on the fact that I showed some video clips of cool projects that Caroline and Dirk have done, and needless to say that doesn't translate too well into an audio only podcast, but I at least tried to keep in some of the sound bites so you could get a taste of the experience. If you want to check out the video clips, all the links are in the show resources section for this episode in your podcast platform or at my website. Lastly, I apologize in advance for a little bit of feedback noise from the microphones being passed around - nature of the beast guys.   Okay so, a little bit about Caroline and Dirk.    Caroline Gleich is a professional ski mountaineer and environmental advocate based in Salt Lake City, UT. If you ski in the Wasatch, you've either seen her on the skin track or in the magazines. She is passionate about a wide-range of climate and social issues, and is often working with advocacy non-profits like Protect Our Winters, Heal Utah, Winter Wildlands Alliance, and Tree Utah. She is also the founder of Big Mountain Dreams Foundation, which is dedicated to protecting big mountain environments, while also advocating for the people who live and play there. The film clip we saw from Caroline is called Follow Through, and it documents her journey to ski all 90 ski lines in Andrew McLeans book on steep skiing called the Chuting Gallery.    Dirk Collins is a mountain athlete, producer, director, filmmaker and brand strategist based in Jackson, Wyoming. He is the founder and president of One Eyed Bird, a boutique creative marketing and entertainment house with a passion for meaningful storytelling. Dirk also co-founded Teton Gravity Research, which is arguably one of the most well-known outdoor film and media production companies out there. Dirk is renowned for taking on complex and technically challenging projects, where his ability to create compelling stories for his clients defies traditional boundaries, no matter the athletic challenge, remote location, or harsh environment. The live audience saw a few different film clips from Dirk, the first was a segment from a series of shorts he did with author and flow expert Steven Kotler for his book Rise of Superman. The second was an insane action sports commercial he did for Pirelli Tires, and the third documented a ski mountaineering trip he took with Jimmy Chin and Kit DesLauriers in Greenland.   I want to give special thanks to my friends Eric Shutt (who founded SummitX) and Joseph Abrahams for bringing me onto the staff, and also to the rest of the crew Josh Cogan, Matt Adkins, and Todd Hanna.    And the last thing before we get into the live interview… Some of you know about Outwild, which is a company I started with my friends Courtney Sanford and Sanni McCandless. Outwild is an event series and resource hub for people who want to create more outdoor and value-driven lifestyles, and I wanted to let you all know we have a few events coming up. This June, we are hosting a women's only retreat in the mountains of New Hampshire focused on following and creating more of what makes you feel alive into your daily life. I'll be doing a workshop of harnessing flow states on top of a lot of other cool workshops and outdoor activities. As of this morning, March 21st there is actually only one ticket left to that event. However, we do have our larger annual festival coming up in September in Lotus California as well. Tickets will be going on sale soon, so stay tuned or go to Outwild.co to find out more. Also want to give a quick shout out to all the Outwild 2018 alumni who threw a pretty banging ski trip reunion in Salt Lake City a few weeks ago - had an awesome time with you guys!   Show Resources: Dirk Collins: Founder - One-Eyed Bird Cofounder - Teton Gravity Research Instagram Film clips from live recording - Flow (Rise of Superman), Pirelli Tires Commercial, Ski Expedition to Greenland (Avani Nuna) Caroline Gleich: Founder - Big Mountain Dreams Foundation Personal website Instagram Film clip from live recording - Follow Through Other show resources and mentions: SummitX Leadership and Tech Retreat Photos by Joshua Cogan Space by Silicon Couloir and Spark Coworking The Chuting Gallery - by Andrew McLean Jimmy Chin Kit DesLauriers Steven Kotler

I first learned about Winter Wildlands Alliance when I attended the backcountry film festival this past fall. Turns out, that’s how today’s guest, Hilary Eisen also learned of the organization about five years prior to that. She is the policy director for Winter Wildlands Alliance, which is dedicated to preserving winter wildlands and quality human-powered snowsports experiences on public lands. Hilary is an avid backcountry skier and climber with a passion for wild landscapes. She works on National Forest winter travel management and other policy issues that affect backcountry skiers. Previously, she worked on public lands conservation in Wyoming and Montana for the Greater Yellowstone Coalition and Wilderness Society. She holds a Masters of Science degree in Wildlife Biology from the University of Montana and a B.A. degree in Biology and Environmental Studies from Middlebury College.    We talk today about circuitous life paths and serendipity and how to save the playground we all enjoy. I’m always fascinated to hear how people land where they do and today we spend a fair amount of time exploring Hilary’s path. There are a few reasons for this. I have begun to discover a pattern with the guests on this podcast. They say yes to adventure, they end up taking many routes in life that might seem undirected at the time but end up being totally with purpose in hindsight as a combination of diverse experiences come together to create the perfect job/lifestyle

In this episode, I'm chatting with Brody Leven - a professional adventurer, activist, and skier. Brody is a unique breed of professional athlete, namely because you won't necessarily find him hucking backflips off of gnarly cornices in Alaska in the latest TGR ski movie. Instead you'll find him undertaking a journey to Uganda to ski the last remaining glacier on the African continent, or creating a documentary about an intense first ascent of a remote couloir in Georgia's (the country that is) Caucusus mountains. Brody is also an avid outdoor advocate, dedicating about half of his time volunteering for ogranizations like Protect Our Winters, Heal Utah, Winter Wildlands Alliance - among others. We talked at length about the latest challenges facing activism how people can get involved and make a meaningful difference with very little effort. One of the most interesting parts of this episode for me, was a discussion around ego, which is something Brody is very thoughtful about. For him, it's not about the look at me, look what I just did factor. It's much more about taking on challenges and building a life around things that makes him feel alive. I think this is a really important distinction to make, one that in my opinion is the difference between short-term vain and glamour and more long-term fulfillment and happiness. In this episode we chat with Forrest about the history of backcountry skiing in the Tetons, how finding a good ski partner is like dating, and pressing past the ‘last turn around point’ on 21 day ski traverse.
