A new people has emerged in the digital age, that of ‘internet famous' celebrities. And that new people has a class of social scientist focused on studying them, the digital anthropologist. Crystal Abidin, a professor at Australia's Curtin University and founding director of the Influencer Ethnography Research Lab there, is such as digital anthropologist. Her research covers influencers – both adult and child and the general pop culture centered on social media, especially in the Asia Pacific region. In this Social Science Bites podcast, Abidin offers interviewer David Edmonds a metaphor to understand how her cyber-ethnography and digital anthropology work in practice. “I often think of anthropologists as Mars rovers that you throw into these unknown planets, and slowly but surely, we roll around the planet looking for bits of data, bits of material that might be new or novel. We're not going for quantity and volume at this scale. We're looking for what's neglected, unseen, sidelined by the margins, not yet mainstream. And we're measuring how much of these things are characteristic of the planet and worthy of study. … [A]s an anthropologist, given that my fidelity is to people and their cultures, I don't always only go for the shiniest, most mainstream thing. I often look for what's left behind.” In this conversation, though, Abidin talks about something very shiny indeed – those professional internet celebrities known collectively as “influencers.” She explains how while the top influencers do generate the paydays seen in popular media, the ecosystem extends down to individuals who are spending their own money in hopes of someday making it big. She also draws a distinction between influencers and creators, and also between influencers and memes.  Abidin also dives into regional differences in influencer culture, using her own detailed analysis of Asia Pacific influencer cultures, to explore regional differences that should be understood when assessing content on global platforms. “[I]f we were to discount the hegemony of American popular culture and their stronghold and a lot of social media, the palette is so diverse, the markets are so varied, that trends go in many different directions. So we need to sometimes think about who we are speaking about, what the superpower of the day is, and whenever we make these generalizations, what are the limitations? Who's not included in them?” In addition to her role at Curtin, Abidin founded the TikTok Cultures Research Network and is an affiliate researcher with the Media Management and Transformation Centre at Jönköping University. She was named an Australian Research Council DECRA Fellow for 2019 to 2024. Currently the editor-in-chief of Media International Australia, she has written or edited a number of books that bridge popular concerns with academic rigor, including 2018's Internet Celebrity: Understanding Fame Online and this year's Influencer Marketing: Interdisciplinary and Socio-Cultural Perspectives (co-edited with Lauren Gurrieri and Jenna Drenten),

Building visions towards a liberatory future will take creative power, vulnerability, radical imagination, and the capacity to honor difference in all its beauty. Lyo-Demi exemplifies this courage and power in their writing and poetry: “My diagnosis of “bipolar disorder,” in my opinion, is both a sensitivity towards and reaction to traumas (both personal and systemic) that yields strength, creativity, and passion, and my diagnosis of “gender dysphoria”…well that just makes me fabulous.” (From essay: Not Confused, Not Crazy) As we ‘reinvent the world,' many of us have to wade through the nuances of adopting or rejecting labels, and find ways to support ourselves and each other, both within and outside systems. In this episode, Lyo-Demi and I talk about DSM categories, the generative and difficult aspects of mental health concerns, and the gift and power of creativity. In this episode we discuss: the power of mutual aid and peer support reframing and depathologizing mental health diagnoses generative aspects of what gets labeled bipolar and mania honoring difference at the intersection of neurodiversity and gender queerness using creativity, graphic novels and stories to build visions toward liberation Bio Lyo-Demi Green (they/them) is a queer and non-binary writer, graphic novelist and tenured community college professor living in the San Francisco Bay Area on Ohlone Land. They have been published on Salon, The Body is Not an Apology, Foglifter, and elsewhere. They have been featured at dozens of reading series, slams, showcases, and workshops in schools, colleges, and open mics locally and across the country. They co-edited We've Been Too Patient: Voices from Radical Mental Health with Kelechi Ubozoh, published by North Atlantic Books and distributed by Penguin Random House in 2019. They authored Phoenix Song, published by Black Lawrence Press in 2022. They received a BA from Vassar College and have an MFA in Creative Writing from Mills College. There's a module for that. Module name/project name: URL Embed Brief history How old: created in Sep 2014 by the venerable Dave Reid, though recent releases are by Mark Fullmer of the University of Texas at Austin Versions available: 2.0.0-alpha3 and 3.0.0-beta1, the latter of which works with Drupal 10.1 or 11. That said, it does declare a dependency on the Embed project, which unfortunately doesn't yet have a Drupal 11-ready release Maintainership Actively maintained Security coverage technically, but needs a stable release Test coverage Documentation guide Number of open issues: 63 open issues, 4 of which are bugs against the current branch Usage stats: 7,088 sites Module features and usage A content creator using this module only needs to provide a URL to the content they want to embed, as the name suggests The module provides both a CKEditor plugin and a formatter for link fields. Note that you will also need to enable a provided filter plugin for any text formats where you want users to use the CKEditor button Probably the critical distinction between how this module works and other elements of the media system is that this bypasses the media library, and as such is better suited to “one off” uses of remote content like videos, social media posts, and more It's also worth mentioning that the module provides a hook to modify the parameters that will be passed to the oEmbed host, for example to set the number of posts to return from Twitter I could definitely see this as a valuable addition to the Event Platform that we've talked about previously on the podcast, but the lack of a Drupal 11-ready release for the Embed module is an obvious concern. So, if any of our listeners want to take that on, it would be a valuable contribution to the community

Parenting, while wonderful, is tough. Every parent knows that. And while some of the parenting challenges that previous generations faced are still applicable today, there are new challenges we're experiencing that have never been dealt with before. No one knows this better than Mrs. Modern Mom Probs herself, Tara Clark. She has been shedding light (and humor) along the way on what mothers face today since 2017. Her work helps mothers feel less alone and reminds us that we're not failing; we're all just trying to do our best. We had to chat with Tara on the show to hear her thoughts on modern mom probs and her solutions! Who is Tara Clark? Tara Clark is an author, speaker, content creator, podcaster, and the founder of Modern Mom Probs. After becoming a mom and recognizing a hole in the online space for moms to connect authentically, she launched her Instagram account in 2017. She has since built a valued community, solidifying herself as a humorous, trusted voice in the parenting space. Tara holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Villanova University and an MBA in Media Management from Metropolitan College of New York. She currently lives in New Jersey with her husband and son. What Did We Discuss? In this episode, we chat with Tara Clark about modern mom problems. We wanted to talk to Tara about some of the most common struggles modern moms face and solutions to help us move forward. Here are several of the questions that we covered in our conversation: What are some of the most common problems modern mothers face today?  In your experience, what are some effective strategies for managing the juggling act of motherhood, work, and personal life? Social media often portrays an idealized version of motherhood, which can lead to comparison and feelings of inadequacy. How do you address this issue, and what advice do you give moms struggling with it? The mental load of motherhood, including managing household tasks, schedules, and emotional labor, is a significant challenge for many mothers. How do you raise awareness about this issue, and what strategies do you suggest for managing the mental load? Parenting is sometimes likened to a competitive sport, with pressure to excel in various aspects. How do you advocate for a more supportive and empathetic approach to parenting? What are some ways moms can combat feelings of isolation? How do you encourage moms to prioritize their mental health and well-being amidst the demands of parenthood, especially in a culture that often glorifies busyness and self-sacrifice? How can modern moms prioritize self-compassion and self-care when feeling overwhelmed or burnt out? What would it be if you could give modern mothers one piece of advice? Mamas, we are human. We make mistakes. However, we must remember that we are trying our best, and our best is good enough. Give yourself more grace as you navigate this stage of motherhood (and the next stage, and the next). If you're listening to this episode, chances are, you're a very good mother. We hope you feel the love and support you so deserve. Mike Metzler has long had a home on social media: beginning on Facebook in 2005 as a college student to interviewing celebrities octagon-side for UFC Instagram to becoming a social media consultant and strategist. In this episode, you'll learn the many steps it took to get to this point and how his first boss/mentor and doodling his corgi as an astronaut helped him along his path. Get ready for a great cliff's notes version of Social Media Marketing 101 with Mike Metzler. Episode HighlightsMike Metzler got his undergraduate and graduate degrees back-to-back from St. Edwards University. He then went on to have a great mentor in his first boss, who taught him many career skills. These days, Mike believes those he mentors would simply call him ‘friend.' As he works in the social media industry, he tries to help guide the younger generation, who often find themselves thrust into the limelight as influencers. They often know how to perform on social media, but they don't necessarily know “business,” so he helps them avoid being taken advantage of in their career. When it comes to the keys to great mentorship, Mike has fairly solid pillars:First, and most importantly, be available, more available than just what's convenient for you. It is a big commitment that you can't make for everyone. Next, a mentor should encourage responsible risk-taking. It's your job to push your mentee to help them grow but know the risk so they don't gamble with their career. Finally, a mentor must hold their mentee accountable. If they say they're going to tackle a particular challenge, you should follow up with them and make sure they actually took action. Mike has done plenty of work in the social media space over nearly two decades (hey, Facebook circa 2007, we're talking about you). Throughout his time in the digital world, he's seen many social platforms come and go and grow. He's a big proponent of being on every social platform as early as you can. He's found that the early adopters and those who take “responsible risks” are those who often find success on social media. Episode LinksLinkedInInstagramFacebookTwitter/XSnapchatFollow The Digital Marketing Mentor: Website and Blog: thedmmentor.com Instagram: @thedmmentor Linkedin: @thedmmentor YouTube: @thedmmentor Interested in Digital Marketing Services, Careers, or Courses? Finding Your Focus with Tuesday Brooks

Mission Driven Business

Brian chats with Tuesday P. Brooks, a business owner, educator, trusted tax and accounting advisor, and U.S. veteran. Her company, AJOY, champions profitability for women-led micro and small businesses. On the episode, Tuesday shares the power of being open to suggestions and how following where you're led can lead to some incredible outcomes. She also breaks down how prioritizing profitability can help entrepreneurs better support their mission and create impact. Episode Highlights Revenue is a primary focus for mission-driven businesses. Tuesday describes a mission-driven business as one in which the people running it understand that revenue and sales have to be a key focus. If you're running a business with a good cause that doesn't make any money, then you're essentially volunteering. “The only way you can support your mission is if you have the resources to do it,” Tuesday said. “And resources mean money.” The need for revenue to support a mission is particularly impactful for Tuesday as her company AJOY teaches financial fluency to business owners. The company specializes in helping womxn-led businesses achieve profitability through three tiers of support: bookkeeping, cash management, and tax strategy. “If they're employing all of these things, they have no choice to but to be profitable,” she said. You can't grow if nobody knows what you do. Before AJOY existed as a financial management firm, Tuesday used the brand name to provide a wide variety of business services to clients. The problem was that the company didn't grow because nobody quite knew what she did. “If during that time you were to ask 10 people, ‘What does Tuesday do?,' you would have gotten 10 different answers because I was capable of doing a lot of things,” she said. Then, in 2009, she decided to focus on accounting and tax for small businesses. Once she claimed her niche, the business started to grow because people became very aware of her services and did not come to her for anything else. “I have not wavered from what we do, and how we do it has only gotten better,” she said. “People started to understand they could rely on us.” Follow where you're led. Before leaning into running a financial management firm for womxn-led businesses, Tuesday had a winding career path. She got her Master's in Education based on a friend's suggestion and her Business Degree in Media Management because her Mom saw a flier for a program. She also discovered her niche because her mentor and business coach suggested she go to a boot camp. Her experiences have led her to espouse the power of being able to follow. “Everybody talks about leadership, but there's also power in being open to suggestions and doing things,” she said. “It led to so many wonderful experiences that brought me to where I am now, and it's how we're able to support our business because I tapped into so many industries.” Resources + Links AJOY: Website, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube Tuesday's Social Media: Website, LinkedIn, Instagram Brian's Social Media: Twitter, Instagram, Facebook About Brian and the Mission Driven Business Podcast Brian Thompson, JD/CFP, is a tax attorney and certified financial planner who specializes in providing comprehensive financial planning to LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs who run mission-driven businesses. Just skim the career path of my first guest for Season 2 of Insider Interviews and you'll understand why it was worth the wait of my past year on hiatus: It's Jarl Mohn, former President and CEO of NPR...and E! Entertainment Television, the network he also created! Jarl's career includes being hand-picked by former radio buddy, Bob Pittman (currently CEO of iHeart Media), to be the first EVP/GM of MTV and VH1. He also spent many years on the boards of The Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism, the EW Scripps Company and Scripps Networks, and KPCC Southern California Public Radio where he honed his love of public radio. And, while Jarl hung up his pundit placard to focus on hanging art as he and his wife Pamela endow museums and support emerging artists, his 50+ years in media and venture capital have taught him a thing or two about content and management. He shares 35 minutes of brilliance and humility -- from how his years in foster care sparked an escape route to radio, how quality will separate winners and losers in today's content wars, and how art can literally change the way we think. We go head to, literally, toe on the big picture of media, right down to why his face is on my feet. Yeah, you'll have to keep listening for that one. Or watch the video on YouTube, since good content should span all platforms! The following is a highly edited transcript, including a multitude of links to important resources mentioned. Career Path – Radio to Television E.B.: Jarl, you were my first boss in the cable industry. You started E! Entertainment Television and I was there in the Greg Kinnear and Howard Stern days. Can you share a little chronological route to your career? Jarl: I began my career as a disc jockey when I was 15 years old. I ended up ultimately, in New York at WNBC doing afternoons when I was 25 then got into the programming side of the business, became a general manager and  bought some radio stations. Then one of the people I had worked with at WNBC, Bob Pittman, hired me, along with Tom Preston at MTV and VH1. So, I got into the cable TV business. Then in 1986 we created E! Entertainment Television. I did a stint with John Malone at Liberty Media as CEO of Liberty Digital, which was used to invest in internet companies and some interactive companies. Then venture capital /early stage angel investing for about 16 years. And then I had been involved in public radio in Los Angeles as a board member of KPCC and had the opportunity to become CEO of NPR nationally, for about six years. I finished up my tour of duty in 2019 and returned to Los Angeles. Radio as Escape from Foster Care EB: You shared with me that you had been in a group home in foster care .... Jarl: It was a very difficult thing to experience. I spend some time with foster youth and young adults in Los Angeles County now and have a chance to talk to a number of them. Almost every one, using different language, wants to know how we survived our PTSD or our trauma. ...I hated my existence in that children's home so much that I discovered radio and listened to it nonstop and fantasized about being one of those cool disc jockeys. So, when I got out at 15, I had a chance to go to engineering school, get my FCC license and began working at a radio station. EB: Radio is, of course we talk about it as theater of the mind. I just read an amazing memoir called A Place Called Home by David Ambroz, who actually works at Amazon now, and overcame similar challenges. You both remind us how we all need to support youth so much better and try to improve that world. The Art of Listening EB: Jarl, I knew you when you still used your DJ name, Lee Masters...I remember you would regularly walk the halls of E! Entertainment Television, chatting with every employee, every day. That meant the world to everyone I'm still part of the past-employee Facebook group. I even did an episode last season of Insider Interviews with Darren G.

And certainly there is that work available today. But at the same time, so much of our work has been automated.”“Innovation is what really provides value in our market. And that's what a lot of us Gen Zers have is that innovation.  And then, that courage to relentlessly push that innovation until we do make something better.”“The whole phrase of “If you find something you love, you won't work a day in your life.”  I think the concept behind that has driven us to realize that there's gotta be something more. And maybe we don't have to be miserable at work.”“… cumulative innovation to me is like passing on a basketball court. Okay, I don't have a shot here, but I'll pass to an open teammate. It's more of learn from what isn't going right, or is just a little bit off. Perfect that so that you can shoot and score this time.
