What can be done to attract more women to construction? Today, on the Leadership Blueprints podcast, we welcome Barb Allen, a renowned construction industry keynote speaker and host of the Constructive Behaviors Podcast. In honor of Women in Construction Week, we talked with Barb about her construction career and how she is helping more women find success in the industry. From stumbling on a degree in construction management – and immediately realizing it was what she wanted to do – to spending over twenty years in the field, Barb recounts how she moved through the ranks to where she is today. We discuss the current level of diversity in construction, what can be done to attract more women to the field, and how The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) programs are introducing a new generation of young people to the joys of construction work. Barb also shares the story behind her 14%ers Subscription Box, designed to support and empower women in construction. Tune in for an inspiring conversation about breaking barriers and building a more inclusive future! Key Points From This Episode:• How she uses public speaking to address gender-specific challenges.• Unpacking the variety of career paths in construction.• What the industry can do to attract more women to construction.• Why companies should spotlight female employees and their roles.• How to normalize construction as a career path for women from a young age. Quotes:“It's important that companies are spotlighting, as much as possible, the women that work in their companies and – help people understand what it is they do. Because we have amazing women.” — Barb Allen “There's such a stigma about the challenges that women face in the industry. And yes, we face challenges, but when we are overcoming these, it is such a rewarding career.” — Barb Allen “The more we can work together to make a more inclusive environment for everyone in it, the more successful this industry will be.” — Barb Allen “Safety glasses are so inexpensive. But the first time I put these safety glasses on, and they fit in my face. I was like, ‘Oh my gosh. I'm 30 years into this industry, and this is the first pair of safety glasses that feel like they fit!'” — Barb Allen Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:Barb AllenBarb Allen on LinkedInConstructive Behaviors PodcastWomen In Construction Subscription Box: The 14%ersThe National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC)Women in Construction WeekWomen in Construction Midwest Region | Block Kids Building ProgramCamp NAWIC | Building the Next Generation: Construction Programs for Girls (and Boys!)GoldieBlox Superbowl commercial 2014Plumber PaigePlumber Paige BooksJudaline CassidyJudaline Cassidy BooksTalking from 9 to 5: Women and Men at WorkLeadership Blueprints PodcastMCFAMCFA CareersBJ Kraemer on LinkedIn
With career opportunities plentiful in construction, the Richmond chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) is paving the way for more women to enter the industry in a variety of roles. In this episode, Kristi Smith, Jessica Behmke, and Kelly Schips share their stories of entering the construction field and what our community can do to encourage more girls to do the same.
In this episode of the Locked Up Living podcast, Naomi and David interview Chloe Xhidas, the Operations Manager at BW Design and Build Division, a fit out contractor specializing in office refurbishment. Chloe is also a committee member for the National Association for Women in Construction (NAWIC). In the construction industry, women are significantly underrepresented, making up only 15% of the workforce. Only 1% of women are in skilled trades, and 16% hold managerial positions. This lack of representation creates challenges for women working in construction, particularly on construction sites where they may face discrimination and inappropriate behavior from male colleagues. To cope with these challenges, women often develop a steely persona and strive to be better than their male counterparts to justify their place in the industry. They may feel the need to be perfect, not make mistakes, and constantly prove themselves. This can take a toll on their mental health and well-being. To address these issues and reduce the suicide rate in the construction industry, several measures can be taken. Implementing buddy systems and mentorship programs can provide support and guidance to women in construction. Training on mental health awareness and creating a culture of open communication can also be beneficial. Companies can promote an inclusive and respectful work environment by addressing inappropriate behavior and promoting gender equality. While progress may be slower in larger organizations, smaller teams and companies may offer a more supportive and visible environment for women. Building confidence and not being afraid to ask questions or admit not knowing everything is crucial for young women starting out in construction. Overall, it is important to address the challenges faced by women in construction and create a more inclusive and supportive industry that values their contributions and prioritizes their well-being.

On this episode of the Skilled Trade Series on The Gas Compression Podcast, host Michael Haning welcomes Anne Pfleger, Director of Office Operations at Hancock Structural Steel in Findlay, Ohio. Anne is also past president of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), an organization she's been a member of for 15 years. According to Anne, women are now more than 10% of the workforce in construction, a number she and many others would like to see higher. She has put in a lot of time and effort educating women about construction and encouraging them to consider it for a career. Like many other industries including gas compression, Anne is having trouble finding skilled workers to fill her construction positions. She is proactive about recruiting talent by attending job fairs and visiting students still in school, sometimes as early as first grade. She enjoys engaging with students to get them to think about construction from different angles. An example she gives is telling young people who are into technology that flying drones is a job in construction. She gives some valuable tips for engaging people at job fairs, which apply to any skilled trade industry. Jillian Penkin started her career in construction 12 years ago. The first 10 years, she worked for two reputable mechanical contractors. This is where she fell in love with the industry. About 2 years ago Jillian made the move to the commercial flooring world. She has been with RD Weis as an account executive since 2019. RD Weis has been in operation for over 30 years both as a flooring installer and top-notch maintenance company. Jillian loves the ability to not only remain in the construction industry but to be able to bring some design into what she does every day. Different colors, textures, styles, and trends bring her customer’s visions to life in their spaces. Jillian has been a member of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) for about 10 years. She has served on the board for several years and was Rochester chapter president from 2015-2017. The organization allowed her to learn more about the construction industry and find support where she needed it as a young woman in a male clustered field. Now, she spends much of her time focusing on the support of diversity in the construction industry and helping bring awareness to women working in the trades. In 2020 Jillian moved to Buffalo, NY and worked with some amazing colleagues to charter the chapter of NAWIC Buffalo-Niagara. Now they are 4 months in and 47 members strong, well on the way to affect positive change in her community, raising funds for the annual scholarship and connecting women across the construction industry to strengthen their bond. Jillian takes pride in leading this newly chartered chapter as President and looks forward to working with members and board of directors to lay a strong foundation that will continue to serve the Buffalo community.
In this episode, I got to have a conversation with Mari Madrigal. Mari is the owner of Foremost Improvements. Mari's story is impressive. Coming to America from Panama. She got into construction after getting married and fell in love with it. She loved every aspect of the industry and wanted to learn as much as she could. She would spend many of her days talking to workers, asking questions, and researching the industry. Mari founded Foremost Improvements in 2018, focusing on Commercial and Residential construction. She came from a sales and customer service background which has enabled her to see this market from a customer's perspective, and as such, saw the need for quality materials and service. She is OSHA 30 Certified and in 2019 graduated from the HACIA Contractor Training Program sponsored by the State of Illinois DCEO-Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. Foremost Improvements is a current member of HACIA, Federation of Woman Contractors (FWC), National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), Chicago Roofing Contractors Association (CRCA), National Women in Roofing (NWIR), The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Mari Madrigal Website: https://www.foremostimprovements.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/maryh.madrigal/ Host Info Email: Bill@rkreiman.com CONNECT WITH ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA: ▶︎ YOUTUBE | https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxAdSxHN0dIXZPhA-6p1HYA ▶︎ INSTAGRAM | https://www.instagram.com/imbillreiman ▶︎FACEBOOK| https://www.facebook.com/billy.reiman ▶︎ LINKEDIN | https://www.linkedin.com/in/bill-reim... ▶︎ TWITTER | https://twitter.com/ImBillReiman ▶︎ WEBSITE | https://www.rkreiman.com
