Bishop Mariann Budde is being attacked mercilessly for calling for mercy. We start this episode with something her detractors in the Trump Administration and the media won't give you: her own words. You can judge for yourself if anything she gave in her appeal to President Trump for mercy was remotely "nasty" or even vaguely wrong. Next, We look at how SCOTUS has rejected Montana's attempt to use the Independent State Legislature (ISL) theory to circumvent their courts' rulings on their measures to suppress voting - SCOTUS got this one right! Then, we give a special look at misterG's report on his friend Ahmed, a wonderful musician and teacher living in Gaza who has been steadfast in spreading music despite the genocidal warfare there. For more, be sure to tune into greenarrowradio on WSUM 91.7FM Saturday, January 25, 2025 or stream it live on wsum.org. Finally, we look at how Alabama's "work release" program makes the state so much money that they don't like granting parole - it reduces the number of prisoners they can profit from. All this and more on TMI for Friday, January 24, 2025 – listen in for YOUR Cure for the Common Media!

BONUS! Check out THIS archive of TMI from 2014: There's been a lot of talk in the news lately of the CIA, and TMI will join in... about a completely different CIA. The Cowboy Indian Alliance, a group of ranchers, farmers and tribal communities from along the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline route, are planning to ride into Washington DC and set up camp near the White House to tell President Obama to reject the pipeline. Joining us to talk about it is Maria Langholz, who is one of a multitude of activists who, on April 26th, will join this new "CIA" for a final message that the Keystone XL pipeline and the tar sands must be rejected to protect this generation, and those yet to come. She's putting together a bus to take interested activists to DC on a route from Minneapolis through Madison and Chicago - go to http://www.eventbrite.com/e/travel-to-reject-and-protect-with-mn350-tickets-11277909531 for all details on how to get on that bus. All that and more today at noon Central on TMI with Aldous Tyler, airing live on WSUM 91.7FM in Madison, and streaming live on http://wsum.org/ - don't miss it!
BONUS! Check out THIS archive of TMI from 2014: In this week's Supreme Court ruling on McCutcheon vs FEC, we saw what many are denouncing as "the end of democracy in America" and "Citizens United on steroids" - it certainly looks bad, but what exactly happened, and what are the most likely repercussions? I'm brushed up on the issue, but I cannot match the years of campaign finance expertise of Mike McCabe, of the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign. He'll join us to give us a clear view of it all. Then, as if that wasn't enough electoral bad news, I'm going to go over a very strange fact: you do not have a Constitutional right to vote in America. If you think that sounds insane, you're not alone: Congressman Mark Pocan has proposed a Constitutional amendment to explicitly define that right to vote for all. But just in case you think he and I are completely off-base, we'll review exactly why we make this outrageous claim. All that and more on TMI for Saturday April 5th, 2014, broadcasting live at noon Central on WSUM 91.7FM and audio-streamed live via http://wsum.org/ ! Don't miss a thing!
BONUS! Check out THIS archive of TMI from 2014: TMI today is on fire! Joining us live in studio are two friends of the program we're proud to welcome back: John Fugelsang, frequent commentator on life's absurdities and former host of Current TV's Viewpoint, and Steve Horn, investigative journalist and research fellow at DeSmogBlog. John always has great insights into how humanity seems to stumble into itself and even better suggestions on how to keep that from happening, and today we will talk about media and politics: how too often it seems the media seeks to divide and scare us of each other, rather than inform us about what's happening! John always gives great conversation, so don't miss it! Steve will delve into the waters of Lake Michigan near Chicago to show us the latest on what exactly BP spilled there, and how much of it was released, and what kind of danger this may put the Windy City's drinking supply in. Then, he'll bring to light the energy export congressional hearings that happened this week, at which discussion of climate change was conspicuously absent. All that and more today on TMI with Aldous Tyler at noon Central on WSUM 91.7FM in Madison, or streaming live audio via http://wsum.org!
BONUS! Check out THIS archive of TMI from 2014: Mike Crute, with his co-host Dom Salvia, run The Devil's Advocates Radio program on The Mic 92.1 FM here in Madison. It is designed to offer a place for differing points of view, and thanks to that managed to get an exclusive interview with GOP State Senator Dale Schultz, wherein Senator Schultz vehemently decried his own party's plan to suppress the vote. But that's not the only way Dom and Crute have been fighting Scott Walker's campaign of silencing his opposition: by spontaneously joining in the Solidarity Sing Along once, Mike Crute (as well as Dom Salvia) were arrested. His defense attorney won his case on First Amendment grounds, clearing the way for many other arrested singers... but that story is not over yet. Listen in! We'll have that and much more on TMI today at noon Central on WSUM 91.7FM in Madison, or streaming live via http://wsum.org/ and http://tmitmitmi.com/listen - tune in!

This week we welcome our second guest onto the pod, the host of the new podcast from Madison's August Shop "The August Forum", Andrew Nguyen. Also a sales associate at August, a former radio DJ and current visual creative director of Madison's WSUM student radio network, not to mention a student at UW-Madison, Andrew is a certifiable Jack of all trades. We get to talking about his - and his new podcast's - influences, both inside and outside of the podcast world, what he keeps in his queue, whether or not he bet on the World Cup, what he loves about Madison, what's the hottest gear this holiday season at August, and much more. Alex's audio during the interview with Andrew was not recorded through his wonderful Samson Q2U podcast mic and it therefore sounds like he is underwater for the duration of our chat. “Black Leather On The Inside” Victor DeLorenzo rose to global prominence as the drummer for the Violent Femmes—but he did really cool stuff before that and really cool stuff after. An actor since the age of five, after college DeLorenzo was a member of Theatre X, a pretty punk rock and way ahead of its time improv theatre group, who performed all over the world. He formed the Violent Femmes with Brian Ritchie in 1980 and although the group toured and recorded pretty exhaustively, DeLorenzo still stayed involved with Theater X. A minimalist drummer who comes armed with a spare kit and steel brushes, DeLorenzo is one of the most innovative players in modern music. His rhythms roll and swing with precision and finesse and his flourishes are infectious, powerful and stirring. After parting ways with the Femmes, DeLorenzo toured with the Velvet Underground's Moe Tucker, put out a handful of marvelous solo albums, opened a recording studio, and formed a chamber rock duo called Nineteen Thirteen with cellist Janet Schiff. But that's not all. DeLorenzo writes the Showoff column for Milwaukee.com, co-hosts the Frail Pagans radio show on WSUM with Mr. G and his new project is the Night Crickets with David J of Bauhaus and Love and Rockets. Their debut A Free Society is filled with dark, percussive beauty and lyrical invention and t's buoyed by sneaky rhythms and brilliant melodic touches. www.victordelorenzo.weebly.com www.facebook.com/DougSeymourPhotography @dougseymourphoto www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Dave Black, founder of WSUM here in Madison, Wisconsin, and one of the key people who helped get TMI on the airwaves, has died less than one year after his retirement. While we shall spend most of this episode on other topics, I refused to go further without honoring the passing of this dedicated media visionary. Thank you for humoring me. Then, we talk about the dry facts surrounding the drought the southwest United States has been suffering though, including how it can be considered the worst in recorded history by several measures. Next, we examine how the very framework we use on a daily basis to talk about environmental issues has been corrupted for over 50 years now to shift as much of the blame away from corporate responsibility as possible. Finally, we briefly go over how for the first time, computer modeling has been able to successfully simulate the universe from the Big Bang through to its present state. All this and much more on TMI for Friday, February 18, 2022 - listen in for YOUR Cure for the Common Media!
In my second episode with WSUM 91.7 FM radio, I'm joined by NBA fanatic Quint Leale to discuss what to expect for the 2021-2022 NBA season. Basketball is finally back, and I can't wait to see how this year unfolds!
Brant finishes off his day at WSUM by fast-forwarding to the 80s music of the current era.
In my first ever show with WSUM 91.7 FM Madison, I'm joined by Ben Salomon to discuss Badger football, winners and losers from week 2 of the college football season and we finish it off by dabbling in week 1 and week 2 of the NFL season.
What is outlaw country? Is it the raw and rugged wild spirit, like in Hank Williams? Is it Johnny Cash playing at Folsom Prison? Or is it just a moniker used to ground a new generation of country artists that could thrive outside of the country music machine? Some would say it's the latter, but it's really a combination of the three. Before the 70s, if you were a country artist, you followed somewhat of a formula. You wrote songs that were of a certain length or a certain tone and continued to crank them out for the studio if you wanted to get radio play. This infamously ruffled the feathers of some of the greatest artists of the time, but they mostly had to just endure in spite of it. By the time the 1970s rolled around though, the rising stars of country were sick of it. The story of going to Nashville, selling your songs for enough money to eat, then seeing the money that your songs brings the artist and the studio was getting old fast. And Willie Nelson, someone that thrived on unconventional songwriting, was getting shut out by the industry each time he tried to do something different. Frustrated with RCA's response to his album "Yesterday's Wine" in 1972, Willie actually formally retired from music, but it was short lived. Waylon Jennings was also going through the Nashville music machine at the time, and by 1976 it was time to make a statement. They would not follow the arcane country rules that held them back. They would be free. They would be outlaws... with Brad, Jon, and Jake the Snake Foster! The cinematic hip hop coming of age tale continues and Tariq is really being taken in by this new flashy lifestyle, but in this half of the album, the other shoe drops. After a run in with the cops that lands him in a cell, dealing with the guilt to his mom and his reverend, and a brutal betrayal, Tariq goes through the entire school of hard knocks in just days. Noticed initially a few months back, President Trump's support among one of the GOP's most staunch base, white people over 60, seems to be declining. We examine what this might mean for November 3rd. Then, we talk about what has been happening among the movie industry this year, something we've been told has been on the decline now for years. Is the era of GOING to the movies over? We discuss. Finally, yours truly has an OpEd published on Common Dreams this week, all about recognizing the patterns of history in this election enough to step outside, and with luck, change them. We go through that piece, making sure to highlight what's important. All this and MORE on TMI with Aldous Tyler for Friday, October 9th, 2020, airing at 5pm Central on WSUM 91.7 FM in Madison, WI or via any streaming option in the comments below! Tune in for YOUR Cure for the Common Media.
By now, the world has heard about the shooting of Jacob Blake seven times in the back, but of course, the facts surrounding it have already been spun by people trying to justify the murderous actions of the Kenosha officer and the 17 year old vigilante just days later. To combat that, we go through a complete timeline of the actual facts on hand, so be sure to listen in so you don't get sucked into a false narrative. Then, almost as if an illustration of last episode's "Mama Ain't Happy" segment, Hurricane Laura came sweeping in over western Louisiana and up into Arkansas. We recount what happened and how truly historic this storm was, the strongest to hit Louisiana in over a century and a half! Finally, we go over a new NPR/Ipsos poll and challenge the common media spin on it, that somehow it shows that the George Floyd protests have been ineffective. Reading the actual data makes it clear that this is far from the truth! All this and more on TMI for Friday, August 28, 2020, broadcast at 5pm on WSUM 91.7FM in Madison, and streamed simultaneously via wsum.org - but you can here it here, now! Listen in:
On this week's TMI with Aldous Tyler: Fossil fuel giant Chevron has found an Orwellian way to connect sunshine with drilling fracking wells - so much so, that I'm dubbing them "OrWells". Friend of the show Steve Horn returns to fill in the maddening details on that story as well as how a California official got in trouble for wanting to "block out the Sun" and finally how prisoner firefighters might get their due for their unrewarding work to keep us safe, all stories Steve broke on The Real News Network in the past week! Then, we discuss how barely over half of the potential voters who are impoverished and low-wage came out to vote in 2016, and how this bloc of voters can easily swing the tide of the all-important Senate battle in November. Finally, we give credit where due to a wonderful victory, congratulating Cori Bush on defeating an incumbent whose family occupied the Congressional seat for over 50 years. All that and more was on TMI for Friday, August 14th, which aired 5PM Central on WSUM 91.7 FM in Madison! Listen in and lock on to the Cure for the Common Media.
Trump and the GOP are playing us AGAIN. By attacking vote-by-mail as being highly prone to fraud by voters (it's not, BTW), he's tricked the establishment Dems into a full throated defense of it. Why is that a problem? Because voting by mail DOES have a major flaw, but IN TRUMP'S FAVOR: many, and I mean MANY places have managed to put regulations and shady tricks in place to cause MILLIONS of mailed votes to be discarded by those we've trusted to COUNT them. And whose votes are the most likely to be discarded? College students, black people and low-income city folk... in other words, demographics the GOP does very poorly with. But don't take my word for it. Greg Palast has it all laid out in his book, "How Trump Stole 2020”. Don't be fooled into JUST voting by mail: be sure to steal your vote BACK. Also in the episode: figures don't lie, but liars do figure, and that's never been more true than with the current pandemic. Listen in on how to properly understand the numbers, and how to tell when someone's abusing them to distort reality. Finally, we talk about the federal response to Portland's BLM/George Floyd protest, and how those aren't ACTUALLY all FEDERAL agents bring used against the protestors. Don't miss this episode of TMI, fresh from its return to WSUM!
The wall has been built. Pink has the isolation he's been building toward his whole life. In his isolation, his hatred and fear of humanity continues to grow, and his delusional self becomes a musical Hitler of sorts, even calling for a "final solution" to deal with all those that are different than him. But even Pink eventually grows tired of his Hitler alter ego and starts to turn his accusations inward, and a trial ensues... In the second half of "The Wall," we follow his descent into madness (madness??) as he finally faces his worst fear: himself. With some of the most dynamic musical numbers in Pink Floyd history, from your standard 80s synth to roaring Gilmour solos to Disney-esque musical numbers, this album has everything. Whether you enjoy it or not, "The Wall" has become a cultural reference point for all concept albums and rock operas since. Ironically, the weight of "The Wall" was too much for the band itself to handle. As the wall came down in the album, walls were being put up between bandmates, and by "The Final Cut" they were fully built. But for now, join us outside the wall, as Brad LeBaron, David Gallagher, Jon Acker, Scott Westley, and returning guest Jake "the Snake" Foster (host of "Under the Covers") face the madness (1:42:55) together... [GROUP PICK] From "Working Man" to Ayn Rand, Rush runs the gambit on expressing a variety of philosophies in it's music. If you know anything about Ayn Rand's philosophy, objectivism, you know it's pure selfishness (literally) and very anti...anything remotely socialist or communist (as in, took part in the second red scare... yikes). But if you know anything about Rush, you know they are champions of the working class, with their blue collar hit "Working Man" in 1974, an anthem to the proletariat (working class, but more fun to say), and "Tom Sawyer" in 1981, an anthem to the common man. So how can one band have such conflicting ideas between songs? Well... Rush... is complicated. After locking-in to their classic line-up of Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart (RIP), they started expanded their influences from their blues-rock background to something... proggier. They began telling tales with their songs, using everything from science fiction, to fantasy, to philosophy, to tell them. And they drew inspiration from many sources, some from different perspectives. In 2112, they are drawing "Anthem," a short totalitarian dystopia written by Ayn Rand, in which individuality and electricity has been erased from society and everything in your life is dictated by shadowy elder councils. Rush takes this story and turns it into a similar tale about music being erased from the world. In both stories, the protagonist finds what has been erased and tries to share it with the elders, who only punish him for not falling in line. It's a tale that many people can relate to, humble working class or selfish billionaire... and then theres side B. Whatever you know about Rush, you know that when they tell you a story, they make it their own, and they make it loud... [JON's PICK] It's 4/20 everybody and you know what that means its time to spark up a doob and put on some... Dixie Chicks? That's right everyone today we're going to be covering their last album, the 5-grammy-winning hit album "Taking the Long Way." The album has secured it's legacy by being very personal, while also being a response to the political pressures of the time, and being a massive success despite the country music industry completely shutting them out. Before the positive response from Green Day's anti-Bush "American Idiot" in 2004 the Dixie Chicks faced huge backlash over far less of a statement in 2003, when they were putting on a performance in England. This was during the lead up to the invasion of Iraq on false pretenses and lead singer Natalie Maines expressed her concern saying, "We do not want this war, this violence, and we're ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas." The Country Music Industry erupted in anger, painting them as unpatriotic for voicing their opinion on foreign soil, and took them off of the airwaves, boycotted them in churches, and even got people together to destroy their records. All of their country friends turned their back on The Dixie Chicks and they felt it. Apparently, if you didn't follow Tobey Keith's "boot in your ass, it's the American way" response to 9/11, your opinion was wrong and you were shunned in Country music. But that didn't stop The Dixie Chicks from digging into that rebel Country spirit and creating one of their best works, and making Country wish that it wasn't their last. [JOHN'S PICK] The 2000s was a very strange time for anyone that was growing up in it. You were old enough to remember the US economy being in pretty good shape during the 90s with relative peace on the home front, directly followed by the events of 9/11 and a completely new era, full of unending war, vengeful patriotism, increasing distrust of our neighbors, and what seemed at the time to be the worst possible president, George W Bush. Times were-a-changing fast; the Bush Administration had recently waged a war with Iraq using bogus intel unrelated to the 9/11 attacks and some people were waking up from the patriotic shock that the attacks had put them in and started to realize that this "war on terror" was a lot more complicated than they had been told... Green day was already in a strange place when 9/11 happened. Their previous album "Warning" (2000) was a commercial flop, and their master tapes for the next nearly-finished record were stolen from the studio in November 2002, which was going to be called "Cigarettes and Valentines" and musically went back to their roots. Instead of rerecording the album a second time, they took the advice of their long time producer, Rob Cavallo, and started again from scratch. This time, they got into a much more collaborative headspace and took in what was happening in the world around them, which was falling apart more and more day by day. Whether it intended to or not, "American Idiot" became the musical icon for the Bush years. With their politically charged music videos and tours, Green Day went from garage punk to stadium rock punk and became the voice of many peoples' frustrations with the government... Join Brad, Jon A, John G, and Scott as we reminisce about what it was like to grow up in the US during 9/11... [GROUP PICK] Paul McCartney is one of those figures in music that has a long legacy and countless connections to other prominent musicians through the decades. Being caught up in the British invasion and Beatlemania, he was one of the first musicians to earn worldwide celebrity (along with his other lads from Liverpool) that was immediate and truly fanatical. He rode this wave of popularity right on through The Beatles' almost two decades of nonstop hits, but eventually the ride came to a halt. For Paul (as well as John and Ringo), the legacy of The Beatles became a sort of albatross around his neck. His first several solo albums, although topping the charts upon release, were not getting great reviews by the music critics of the time. With the formation of Wings, which included the addition of Denny Laine from The Moody Blues, they continued to face criticism, some about his inclusion of his wife, Linda, in the band, and some bashing Paul's post-Beatles songwriting abilities, but that all changed when Paul re-united with Beatles' producer/arranger George Martin in 1972 for the big and brash “Live and Let Die” for the James Bond film of the same name. It kind of brought back some of that Beatles style that the critics were aching for and got Paul in the headspace for him, Linda, and Laine to create Wings first truly beloved and critically appreciated album, Band on the Run. It harkens back to some of the greatest moments in The Beatles' discography, as well as establishing his new sound moving forward. This album earned Paul back his respect in the eyes of critics and ensured that he would continue to be a force in the music industry, and it doesn't disappoint...
