We are continuing our miniseries where we pay tribute to one of my favorite podcasts, Revisionist History, hosted by the well-known author Malcolm Gladwell. Gladwell describes Revisionist History as a podcast about things overlooked and misunderstood. There are many injuries or problems we see in the office or on the sidelines that patients, parents, coaches, and even health care professionals give a generic label or diagnosis. In some situations, it may be correct, but often things get lumped into a simple category which may lead to things not being treated or managed most effectively. This is episode 9 of this series I am affectionately calling “Revisionist Sports Medicine”, a series about things in Pediatric Sports Medicine overlooked or misunderstood. Connect with The Host! Community Perception: How does public trust (or lack thereof) in the justice system impact the effectiveness of both policing and community safety, according to the experiences shared by the speakers? Where should change start? Community Policing: Several speakers shared about the power of having officers truly embedded in the community. Redemption and Forgiveness: What does real redemption look like for youth who have made serious mistakes? Should the justice system emphasize second chances, and where is the line drawn? The episode discusses the importance of not “playing into” a subject's delusions during negotiation. Why might affirming a delusional belief be risky, and what are alternative approaches? The team talks about the integration of mental health professionals into law enforcement responses. What are the potential challenges and benefits discussed concerning this collaboration? Both hosts and Dr. Morgan mention the rise in mental health-related crisis calls. How do you think police departments can best equip themselves to handle these situations? The episode criticizes the decision to send an additional "hostage" (Spencer) into the crisis situation as unrealistic and dangerous. Why is this problematic from a tactical and negotiation standpoint? With so much of the episode's critique revolving around writing choices for suspense versus realism, do you think it's possible for TV dramas to balance excitement and accuracy? Why or why not? The discussion touched on situational awareness, both in professional and personal life. How might increased public education on situational awareness benefit everyday safety? After watching this episode and listening to the breakdown, do you think shows like Criminal Minds help or hurt public perception of law enforcement, negotiation, and mental health crises? Why? What does this evolution say about the importance of fit and personal connection to a firearm? The episode delves into the unique challenges of hunting in Canada, especially extreme temperatures. How does climate impact firearm maintenance and usage, according to Sean Pollock? Sean Pollock mentions his preference for leaving firearms outside in cold temperatures rather than bringing them indoors. Why is this method important, and how does it prevent problems during hunts? The discussion explores the role of family tradition in hunting and firearm use. How does passing down firearms from generation to generation add meaning to the hunting experience for Sean Pollock and his family? The episode touches on the concept of “being a perpetual student” in the world of firearms. What does this mean, and why is continual learning so important in this context? Sean Pollock emphasizes the importance of pairing high-quality optics with reliable rifles. How can choosing the right glass make a difference in hunting situations, especially in low light? What factors lead Sean Pollock to invest in a Cooper rifle, and how does he justify the higher cost compared to other rifles? The idea of ethical shot placement and responsible hunting is brought up several times. How does Sean Pollock integrate this ethics into his hunts and teaching his children? Hunting is compared to other activities (like golf) where having the right tool for the job makes a difference. How does this analogy help non-hunters understand the variety of rifles a hunter might own? Throughout the conversation, both speakers point to the community, camaraderie, and family that come from shooting and hunting together. How do shared outdoor and range experiences strengthen these bonds, and what stories from the episode best illustrate this? 2GuysTalking welcomed in a dynamic firearms trainer to talk about each and every firearm used inside The 1999 feature film, "The Matrix". There is a strange entry that is classified as "the Best Christmas Movie of All Time", and while it features the words, "Ho, Ho, Ho", Merry Christmas, and takes place in December - the FIREWORKS featured inside the movie are the captivating piece of it as we all collectively say, "Yipee-Ki-Yay, Motherf@#%&*!" The words terrorism were a much smaller piece of the world's fabric in 1988, but is a very large piece of one of the most classic action movie tales woven into the history of cinema. It celebrates it's 30th Birthday this year. The personalities, the fun, the guns, the running, the explosions and connective reparte' of Die Hard continue to make it clearly a staple in moviedom but why? What do you think it means to take control as a podcast host, and do you believe it's essential for a successful show? Bryan expresses frustration when hosts ask their guests at the end of the show, “Where can people find you?” instead of preparing in advance. Do you agree with this criticism? Why or why not? Both Mike and Bryan talk about the importance of research before having a guest on. What steps do you think are most important for a host to take before an interview? The episode mentions the dangers of “paralysis of analysis” when hosts give too many calls to action. In your opinion, what's the ideal way to engage your audience without overwhelming them? Mike suggests the idea of a “host academy” for training effective podcast hosts. Would you find value in such a program, and what topics would you expect it to cover? In your own experiences, what are some key elements that make co-host or guest chemistry truly work? Mike shares a story about an episode where the chemistry just wasn't there, despite everyone's professionalism. Have you ever experienced (or listened to) a podcast where you could sense the lack of chemistry? How did it impact your perception of the episode? Bryan compares co-hosted shows to “rinsing and repeating” a successful chemistry set, while interviews constantly introduce new variables. Which format do you think presents more challenges in terms of chemistry, and why? How can podcasters prepare or adapt when they realize on air that the chemistry isn't clicking? Is there ever a time to “push through,” or is it better to step back and reevaluate? Mike mentions the importance of simply discussing why something doesn't work, so improvements can be made. How important do you think “post-mortem” conversations are after a tough episode or failed collaboration? In the episode, Bryan emphasizes tailoring his approach to the needs of his guests (structure, control, spontaneity, etc.). How have you seen—or practiced—customizing your style to help others shine on a podcast? The hosts argue that not everyone is meant to work well together, and that's okay. How do you distinguish between an unsalvageable chemistry set and one that just needs adjustment? They talk about adding opposites or differing perspectives intentionally to the mix. How do you balance diversity of thought with foundational compatibility in a successful co-hosting dynamic? Mike discusses seeking out people with completely different business perspectives to intentionally shake up his “chemistry set.” Do you think this approach leads to better content and growth, or can it introduce too much friction?

If you haven't, I got good news, but I got more bad news. We'll share all of that and more inside this episode of the Podcast Gauntlet where we Throw-Down, Discuss, Rise & Shine in Podcasting! The hosts mention accessibility for the deaf and hard of hearing as an “ideal use” for transcripts. What additional steps do they suggest make transcripts more useful for this audience? Based on Mike's experience commissioning transcripts for all his podcasts, what challenges did he mention regarding both the process and the reception from his intended audience? What do the hosts mean when they refer to “audio landmines” in podcast transcripts, and how does this impact their usefulness? Bryan mentions that some people use transcripts as a replacement for show notes. What are the hosts' opinions on this practice? Mike discusses technological advancements like live transcription apps. How does he view the current state of transcription compared to earlier manual processes? The hosts call for listeners to send examples of “great” transcripts or studies proving transcript SEO value. Why do you think they issue this challenge, and what are they hoping to find? Writing about anything - isn't easy. Coming up with ideas, that engage, educated and help people understand the context of what they're learning about is a real skill set. During a reasonably frustrating time connecting social media track several months ago, I was presented with a NEW author that I'd never encountered. Tyler Freel. While I originally thought that it was a pen-name being used to conjure content, after a series of weeks reading ongoing articles from Tyler, I found that not only was he REAL, he was "FOR REAL" when it comes to talking about firearms, the outdoors and living a life that many of us only ever accidentally think about. It's time to welcome a great and creative writer, Father, Writer and Outdoorsman that has so much to share with me and the g rowing 2GuysTalking Guns audience. Medical TV Shows. From M*A*S*H to St Elsewhere, ER to Scrubs, Call the Midwife to House, Grey's Anatomy to Chicago Med, there have been a wide variety of portrayals of medical care on television over the years. There are some shows that try to have some degree of accuracy and some that may just try to portray that all doctors and nurses just sleep with each other. But occasionally a show comes along that truly gets people talking. That show now is “The Pitt.” I can't say there has been a show I have been as enthusiastic to watch the next episode or to talk to others about if a long time. I have a very special guest with me on the podcast who is going to help breakdown the first season of “The Pitt” over the next several episodes. Let's dive in to “The Pitt.” Connect with The Host! Bryan mentions that having guests may not position you as an expert, but rather as someone who can find experts. Do you agree with this? Why or why not? Mike talks about crafting a legacy through his podcast. What does “crafting a legacy” mean to you when it comes to podcasting or other creative work? The hosts discuss the value of bringing on unique guests, such as creatives and people behind the scenes, instead of just celebrity interviews. What kind of guests do you find most compelling in podcasts, and why? What are the potential benefits and drawbacks of using guest reservation or guest-search services for podcasting, according to the hosts' experiences? Bryan and Mike both emphasize the importance of listening to your own show. How do you think regularly reviewing your own work can help you grow as a podcaster or creator? Do you think there is too much focus on finding “growth hacks” in podcasting (or other fields)? Why do you think this mindset is so prevalent? Mike mentions finding “light bulb moments” with guests. What strategies can podcasters use to uncover these moments in their own interviews? How do you personally balance the desire for efficiency (life hacks, shortcuts, tools) with the value of putting in time and effort to improve your podcast or project? Firearms aren't just something people partake in as a hobby or piece of their lifestyle. They are an investment. Something that they pour time, effort, money and parts of their life into to change the way they live their lives. While the price of firearms varies, if there was ever a time where something absolutely needed to "do what it's supposed to", it's with firearms. When we consider the variety of x-factors inside of any purchase, the path to firearm ownership is littered with many different kinds of landmines that are NOT easy to nagivate. Consumer Advocacy is VITAL to make sure that your investment isn't only sound, but eventually REALIZED and that means sharing information. Artificial Intelligence. As a child of the 80s, I remember fondly one of my favorite movies and its subsequent sequels about when the machines gain self-awareness and take over. If you are too young and don't recall that movie, perhaps you remember the catch phrase “I'll Be Back.” If you still don't know, good golly, get out and go see The Terminator! When I hear about artificial intelligence and thinking about that movie, I can't help to be a little apprehensive about using it. I don't think we are on any cusp of machines taking over, but we do have a powerful new tool that has the potential to revolutionize how we approach medicine, patient care, and our jobs. We are joined by a frequent AI user today to discuss AI in more detail. Connect with The Host! Subscribe to This Podcast Now! The ultimate success for every podcaster – is FEEDBACK!
