Bryan mentions that having guests may not position you as an expert, but rather as someone who can find experts. Do you agree with this? Why or why not? Mike talks about crafting a legacy through his podcast. What does “crafting a legacy” mean to you when it comes to podcasting or other creative work? The hosts discuss the value of bringing on unique guests, such as creatives and people behind the scenes, instead of just celebrity interviews. What kind of guests do you find most compelling in podcasts, and why? What are the potential benefits and drawbacks of using guest reservation or guest-search services for podcasting, according to the hosts' experiences? Bryan and Mike both emphasize the importance of listening to your own show. How do you think regularly reviewing your own work can help you grow as a podcaster or creator? Do you think there is too much focus on finding “growth hacks” in podcasting (or other fields)? Why do you think this mindset is so prevalent? Mike mentions finding “light bulb moments” with guests. What strategies can podcasters use to uncover these moments in their own interviews? How do you personally balance the desire for efficiency (life hacks, shortcuts, tools) with the value of putting in time and effort to improve your podcast or project? What alternative podcast formats, other than interviews, do you enjoy or think could be successful? Why might a creator choose one over another?   Links from Inside this Episode of The Podcast Gauntlet: Be sure to follow Mike & Bryan via social media via the links available at: https://PodcastGauntlet.Com === The Blue Baggers Project - Training the Future of Crisis Negotiation & Law Enforcement Worldwide http://blubaggersproject.com     === Equipment Listing === Purchase the Stuff that Helps Us Provide You Content and Help Us Grow! ==== Webcams: The Lumina AI Webcam: https://amzn.to/3LzqIKy ==== Microphones: -- Mike: The Sure MV7: https://amzn.to/3MyCHcO Heil PR 40: https://amzn.to/3yNsUeI Heil Fin: https://amzn.to/3yPHfr8

Artificial Intelligence. As a child of the 80s, I remember fondly one of my favorite movies and its subsequent sequels about when the machines gain self-awareness and take over. If you are too young and don't recall that movie, perhaps you remember the catch phrase “I'll Be Back.” If you still don't know, good golly, get out and go see The Terminator! When I hear about artificial intelligence and thinking about that movie, I can't help to be a little apprehensive about using it. I don't think we are on any cusp of machines taking over, but we do have a powerful new tool that has the potential to revolutionize how we approach medicine, patient care, and our jobs. How does one become an on-film character that not only represents a nation but is the leader of what will be a decade+ of Marvel Cinematic Universal entries that will last a lifetime? The worry, beyond casting Captain America, was how on Earth could we take a strapping (and hopefully talented) actor, toss him into a red, white and blue skin-tight suit, strap a shield to his forearm and not get laughed out of theaters across the planet? The answer? FUNCTION. While many of the things you see are cleary from the realm of comic book realms, Marvel found a talented, strapping actor, they got the suit, shield and patriotism to work, and it really does propel the very FIRST offering for Captain America in the MCU. Do Guardian Caps Help Reduce Concussion?

You may have noticed the large puffy extensions on some football helmets in recent years. They are kind of hard to miss. The NFL recommended the Guardian Caps to certain positions for preseason in 2022 and extended their use recently now allowing them for use in regular and postseason play for the 2024 season. While uptake was much lower in the regular season than preseason, the big question is, do they help reduce the likelihood of getting a concussion? As with most NFL data, we don't have that readily publicly available, and it typically isn't published. With the NFL adopting something, that typically trickles down to the levels below. No question I've seen more high school and younger teams adopting the Guardian Caps as well. What do we know about concussions at that level? Today on the podcast I have the lead author from a recently published article which also won the award for the best research article at the AMSSM annual meeting in 2024 about Guardian Caps to discuss their findings.    Connect with The Host!       We are in our sixth year of the podcast and I'm in the middle of my 20th year as a sports medicine physician. Twenty years flew by which means I've probably passed the halfway point in my medical career, unless I feel inspired to still be seeing patients in my seventies, which seems highly unlikely. I thought it would be fun to look back at the last twenty years and talk with a trusted colleague who helped me on this path and what's maybe surprised us in how we deal with sports medicine issues and where we think things may head the rest of our careers.    Connect with The Host! In Memorium: Profiles in Pediatric Sports Medicine – Dr. Stephen Rice

I wanted to take a moment to express my condolences to the Rice family as I found out just a little bit earlier today that doctor Stephen Rice, who we had on the podcast back in April of 2023, so a little over a year ago, had passed away this past Saturday on September 14th. We have definitely lost a leader in the world of pediatric sports medicine and someone who really was able to help put sports medicine on the map. I'm trying to remember and go back and thinking when I first met Steve. I think it was at our research fellowship meeting that we had during our fellowship year and he was one of the leaders and educators for that and I met Steve I think at that point. May have been earlier at an AAP meeting when I was a resident but I'm pretty sure that was my first interaction with him. If you knew Steve, Steve was someone. If you got near him and he had something on his mind, you would definitely be stuck there for a little bit. He would be someone who would definitely talk with you and certainly express his opinion about things. And love it or not like it, that's that's entirely up to you. I always enjoyed having conversations with Steve. I certainly like to push him a little bit on certain things as well and I think he liked the challenge and pushback as well. I really, really appreciated having the time and opportunity to feature him on the podcast last year. He had had an interesting story. I knew a lot about Steve as a sports medicine physician, but I definitely did not know much about Steve as far as his life before that and really learned a lot about him and his passion for broadcasting and being able to broadcast baseball games And just certainly all the stuff that he had done and people he had an influence on that are are certainly now considered also very pivotal and important people in the world of sports medicine. So I just wanted to put the episode back out there again just so it's fresh in people's minds. In certainly a way, I attribute to him. I'm really just, again, I'm honored and touched that I had the opportunity to speak with him last year before he passed and just to give him an opportunity to to tell a story. I think those stories are important and I was privileged to know him and to consider him a friend and a good colleague and someone who is ever passionate about the world of sports medicine and supporting kids and kids' sports and the health of kids. So we lost a giant in the world of pediatric sports. I don't know any other way to express that, but we will miss you, Steve. And I hope you get to broadcast a Brooklyn Dodgers game up in the sky there. And, I hope you enjoy the episode and enjoy listening to Steve.    Connect with The Host! Ethical Issues in Sports Medicine

On a regular basis in sports medicine, we are faced with ethical dilemmas. Whether or not we should allow kids to play certain sports based on injury risk, performance enhancement and equipment advances, treatment interventions, return to play decisions, and conflicts of interest to name a few. These issues may cause disagreements between the athlete and the physician or even among physicians as to how to best deal with various situations.   During my pediatrics residency training, I had the privilege of learning from an ethicist who not only provided me with a process to improve my critical thinking and how to approach things from multiple views, but also was truly influential in shaping me into the physician I am today. Today on the podcast I have a pediatric physician who is considered a true expert on ethics. I hope you finish listening today with a new appreciation for ethics in medicine.    Connect with The Host! A number of years later, a young 8 year old Canadian kid dreamt of becoming a lawman. Later, he did, and at the center of that grand vision was the aforementioned bridge feature film. A Review of The Maddocks Questions — Brain Injury Awareness Month

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 10, 2024

March means two things in the world of sports medicine, not counting March Madness. The first is National Athletic Training Month. The second is Brain Injury Awareness Month. In the world of sport-related concussions, it's an ideal time to continue to bring awareness about concussions, which are a mild traumatic brain injury. I thought for this year, I'd try to go through the SCAT, or the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool and talk about what we know from an evidence-based standpoint how each of the components function. Today we are going to tackle the Maddocks questions. It's time to buckle up as we dive into the SCAT.    Connect with The Host! Baseball certainly isn't the same game it was even 5 years ago. If we go back to 10 years ago, rule changes, personalities and focuses on "enhancements" changed the game to be sure. If we travel back 20 years, we'll see how salaries have clearly evolved, how roles changed completely across the board and how owners have become legends - both revered and reviled. Who'd have thought that now almost 30 years later, a tiny little baseball movie, featuring a bunch of ghosts, a farm, and a game of catch Ray Kinsella never had - would be the focus of a Perspective Review? 1989's FIeld of Dreams offers a little bit of something - to everyone. While a "ghost" story, the only thing you'll think is "scary" about this movie is your inability to walk past a screen it's playing on - and keep on walking. Join 2 baseball zealots who detail The Hype, The Money, The Good, The Bad, The Franchise and The Rating of a one of a kind, round-the-bases trip - Field of Dreams, starring Kevin Kostner...       If you are coming out of fellowship now, you have requirements for training in the use of ultrasound, both diagnostically and for injections. During my fellowship 20 years ago, we weren't talking about ultrasound use and I probably missed that boat by about 5 years or so. I personally don't use ultrasound in my practice because I haven't really set aside time to train since fellowship ended. I'm one of those people who insist on being really good at something and I just don't see where I have the free time to teach this older dog a new trick. But I also have had a harder time finding where ultrasound fits in to my pediatric sports medicine practice. I see a few things that I think it would be great to have a ultrasound to look at quickly. This is where my guest comes in today. I have a pediatric sports medicine physician who uses ultrasound regularly in his practice to teach all of us how ultrasound can benefit us in pediatric sports.    Connect with The Host!       As we all know, the world of youth sports today can sometimes be described as sheer chaos for some families. The frequent travel for competitions, the never-ending quest to keep up with the Joneses, the fear of missing out on developing your child if you don't get them signed up in preschool for sports camps and skill development, numerous practices, the narrative that you must be involved year-round to be better. As a sport medicine physician, I stress with families we want sports to be fun, not painful, especially when talking with our pre high school aged athletes. But how can parents support kids without being that parent that everyone sees riding their kid for their mistakes and living their sports life vicariously through their kids.
