In this episode of the Movement Logic podcast, Laurel and Sarah dissect a recent email they received from Dr. Loren Fishman, in which he expressed frustration over their critique of his study on yoga and bone density. In this episode, they address Fishman's email and take another look at his study, Twelve-Minute Daily Yoga Regimen Reverses Osteoporotic Bone Loss. Laurel and Sarah's conversation explores claims made in the email, as well as Fishman's study's methodology and findings. They compare his claims against established evidence on bone adaptation and emphasize the importance of high-load and high-impact exercise for building bone. They also highlight the need for exercise recommendations to be grounded in solid, evidence-based research—especially for women looking to prevent or reverse osteoporosis and osteopenia.Get on the wait list for our Bone Density Course: Lift for LongevityFollow Movement Logic on Instagram00:00 Introduction00:47 Personal Updates & Course Insights14:25 Critique of Dr. Fishman's Yoga Study52:45 Critique of Yoga's Efficacy in Bone Building53:03 Mechanostat Theory and Bone Adaptation55:18 Challenges in Measuring Yoga's Impact on Bones01:06:17 Dynamic vs. Isometric Contractions in Exercise01:10:20 Unfalsifiable Claims and Scientific Inquiry01:15:16 Turkey Studies and Sustained vs. Intermittent Loading01:18:14 Dynamic Strength Training vs. Impact Training01:18:28 Cellular Accommodation and Running01:19:00 The Importance of Rate of Loading01:21:21 Critique of Yoga for Osteoporosis Claims01:26:24 Red Herrings and False Comparisons01:51:41 Concluding ThoughtsREFERENCESFishman's StudyThe poses in Fishman's studyTables of P values and more P values from Fishman's studyEpisode 79: Make Yoga U Make SenseEpisodes on the Movement Logic podcast 5, 38, 51, 53, 84, and 88 that referenced Fishman's paper.Episode 56 of the Yoga Research & Beyond podcast that looks at Fishman's paper.LIFTMOR trialLIFTMOR-M trialMedex OP Randomized Controlled TrialMeta-analysis on High-Load Resistance Training (HLRT)Systematic Review on Pilates and YogaBone "mass" and the "mechanostat": a proposal (Frost, 1987)Molecular pathways mediating mechanical signaling in boneEpisode 82: Weird Science1984 and 1985 Turkey Study

One of most fundamental and common breathing practices within yoga is the long, slow, deep breathing pattern. In a number of studies of yoga practice, slow yogic breathing has been a practice that beginners often immediately begin to adopt and benefit from in their daily lives as a valuable coping and health strategy. It has also made its way into modern Western medicine as a fairly well know relaxation practice referred to as slow breathing, abdominal breathing or belly breathing. Biomedical scientific research on slow breathing has begun to reveal the substantial impact it has on both mental and physical functioning. On the physical level, it has direct impact on the autonomic nervous system, where it can reduce sympathetic activity, blood pressure and heart rate and increase heart rate variability. It can also change characteristics of respiratory functioning including changes in the chemoreflex response and improvement in gas exchange. Slow breathing research is also showing direct impact on the central nervous system, with positive changes in stress, emotion and pain regulation. Clinical research is beginning to show its efficacy in disorders such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and hypertension. Both Indic and non-Indic systems of knowledge have given authenticity a primal place. However, authenticity can be described and justified differently depending on the theory and/or praxis of a system of knowledge. Indic knowledge systems, especially Yoga, stress the importance of experience and the means to the experience as an indispensable bedrock of authenticity, without neglecting scholarship. However, scholars and practitioners look at authenticity very differently like the way tourists and residents experience a city. Often Yoga studies suffer the defect of the lack of practice and experience. And conversely, the practitioners' perspectives suffer from the defect of downplaying scholarship, especially that Yoga gives primacy to experience. Without this particular information, doing the wrong kind of yoga given the condition may exacerbate the problem. 6:00 Nikola’s guidelines for her research into the effect of yoga on teenagers with          eating disorders: a) must be evidence-based, b) look for what is helpful, c) how do we measure what is helpful, d) start with a literature search. 8:10 Nikola found there were three elements that may be involved with why people have eating disorders. a) Interoception: receptors throughout the body are always reporting on what is happening in the body, things like digestion, blood pressure, hunger, etc. People with eating disorders may not be able to feel their body or they misinterpret what they are feeling. b) Objectification: A person only values certain parts of themselves i.e., their looks or their body. c) Suffering trauma: childhood sexual abuse may be a contributing factor in eating disorders Nikola wasn’t allowed to actually directly measure what happened to the patients that were in the yoga class (it was considered unacceptable to ask very sick children these types of questions). Modifying the research, the researchers decided to ask the yoga teachers giving the intervention and the clinicians working with the teenagers what they saw as a result of the yoga intervention. Anecdotally, the participants felt it had helped them.  The yoga teachers and clinicians also saw improvement and gave very positive feedback. 17:29 The intervention was a 10 week term with one yoga class a week. The yoga teachers were given a template for the classes so that the classes were standardised. It was based on the precepts of trauma-informed yoga and designed using the lenses of yoga therapy. Language is invitational, there were no alignment cues, students were given choice as to how to do the pose within the bounds of safety. Gave students a choice which is very rare during their treatment. 29:50 Outcome: In addition to the research paper, Nikola has designed a set of protocols for yoga teachers or clinicians that want to add yoga to their treatment plans. These protocols are can be accessed on Nikola’s website. Contact: Website: www.adoreyoga.com Email:nikola@adoreyoga.com FB, Insta, Twitter: adoreyoga

071: Using Research to Inform Your Yoga with Ariana Rabinovich Ariana Robinovich is a yoga teacher and Movement Specialist based in New York City. She is the founder of Yoga Research and Beyond which makes research accessible and helps teachers translate research into practice. Ariana also teaches students one-on-one and in group classes, offers Continuing Education courses for fitness professionals, hosts her podcasts and co-wrote a book series called Exposing Yoga Myths.   In this episode Shannon and Ariana discuss the value of research informed teaching. Ariana's Yoga Research and Beyond membership site is a database of reviews about individual studies which are relevant to yoga teachers and Movement Educators. Ariana describes the reviews as Cliff Notes for the research study. The goal of the site is to take complex subjects and translate them into simple terms without the jargon, creating a bridge between science and application.   Ariana talks to Shannon about finding meaning in these research studies and using them as a tool to inspire you and inform your teaching. Ariana wants to be clear that these studies do not provide black-and-white answers and that they should not be taken in without asking questions.   Ariana goes on to describe the complicated nature of analyzing data. For example, if a study sees the overall improvement in the health of a research study group practicing yoga it may be difficult to ascertain the cause. As yoga is a practice that taps into the mind/body connection, the improvement may be due to factors such as breathing, meditation, the physicality or the particular style of yoga. Initial findings can spark future research studies.   Ariana is adamant that she doesn't want to see yoga teachers becoming overwhelmed by the information. Yoga research is, as Ariana describes it: “an add-on and untapped resource.” The big goal of yoga research is to help yoga teachers get a clearer understanding of how yoga can help their clients and to determine how yoga can fit into alternative health care. 4:50 Ariana's yoga journey   9:05 What led Ariana to create her podcast Yoga & Beyond: The Yoga and Movement Science Podcast and the restructuring of her podcast   15:10 Ariana's Yoga Research and Beyond membership site is a database of reviews about individual studies which are relevant to yoga teachers and movement educators   20:05 The opportunity to dialogue with other members in the comment thread in individual articles of members-only Facebook group, sharing questions and intimidation around that- no question is a dumb question   22:45 The complex nature of analyzing research and applying results to the practice   29:20 Examples of yoga research studies and questions to ask yourself when reading the research   32:20 How research informed Ariana's teaching head and shoulder stands in group classes   34:00 How research changed Ariana's view on alignment and flexibility   39:00 How Ariana incorporates strengthening into her yoga classes   43:20 Ariana expands on alignment- when it is most important to be aware   46:00 When research conflicts with yoga teacher training   49:35 What Ariana wishes was included in YTT   53:30 The importance of collaborating with other health practitioners   54:25 Other research resources and advice on taking in new information   58:45 Identifying the bias in studies   1:01:20 Shannon's final thoughts   Links   Ariana's Website   Ariana on Instagram   Yoga Research and Beyond Instagram   Yoga Research and Beyond Website   **Membership discount for Yoga Research and Beyond Website: One-year membership for $79 instead of the regular price of $99. How often do your students ask for help with tight hamstrings? In this episode Jenn Pilotti and I discuss a study that compared 4 stretching techniques for greater hamstring flexibility. This study from the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research compared two active stretches and two passive stretches in 100 people over the course of 8 weeks. It’s clear that one resulted in the greatest gains. We discuss the results here and in our Yoga Research and Beyond review.
