We're talking about a Level I Trauma Center for both Adults & Pediatrics, the state's busiest emergency department, and a critical safety-net hospital for the most vulnerable in our state.  Most of us may know of Hennepin Healthcare for its emergency care, but there's a lot more to it.  It plays a much broader role in our state's healthcare system, and it's safe to say we'd all be at a massive loss without it. But what happens when an indispensable system like this faces a real financial cliff? On Episode 13, we'll take a closer look at Hennepin Healthcare/HCMC and the current financial challenges it's up against.  We'll sit down with Susie Emmert and Jessica Oaxaca, two of Hennepin Healthcare's advocacy and public policy leaders, to discuss what is putting the system under pressure, why it matters far beyond Minneapolis, and why the stakes are so high this time around. Hennepin Healthcare operates one of Minnesota's largest and most essential hospitals, HCMC, formerly known as Hennepin County Medical Center. And it's not in good health. The hospital provides emergency trauma and burn care to patients from across Minnesota and trains more than a third of the region's future doctors. But that mission comes at a cost. The public hospital serves more low-income and uninsured patients than other hospitals, leaving it especially vulnerable as federal Medicaid cuts take hold and the number of uninsured Minnesotans rises. Add in other mounting financial pressures, and leaders say the system is being pushed to the brink.HCMC has already eliminated 100 positions, reduced services and is now seeking sales tax revenue just to stay afloat.MPR News host Angela Davis talks with her guests about the financial crisis at HCMC, why other hospitals are also struggling and some possible solutions. 08/17/25The Healthy Matters PodcastS04_E22 - Why Medicaid Matters for Everyone...With Special Guest:  Susie Emmert - Sr. Director of Advocacy and Public PolicyIt's probably pretty safe to say that the healthcare system in this country is complicated, at best, and something that's only made worse by politics.  The recent passage of "The Big Beautiful Bill" has put an often debated, seldom understood and always essential piece of the healthcare puzzle in jeopardy - that being Medicaid.  But what is Medicaid exactly, and what role does it play for individuals and providers?  How is it different from Medicare?  Why is it under such scrutiny?  And why should I care if I'm not on Medicaid? There's a lot of reasonable confusion when it comes to Medicaid and the passing of this recent bill, so we thought it was time to bring in an expert to help us untangle it - a little, at least.  Susie Emmert, Sr. Director of Advocacy and Public Policy at Hennepin Healthcare will walk us through some of the basics of Medicaid, how it applies to healthcare at both a patient and system level, and the effect the Big Beautiful Bill is expected to have on it (it's not pretty).  Think changes to Medicaid won't effect you?  Tune in and get wise to why this is definitely something that will affect us all. We're open to your comments or ideas for future shows!Email - healthymatters@hcmed.orgCall - 612-873-TALK (8255)Get a preview of upcoming shows on social media and find out more about our show at www.healthymatters.org.

Most Americans are eating and drinking far more sugar than is good for us. Americans consume an average of 17 teaspoons of sugar a day with some estimates as high as 34 teaspoons a day. That's about three times the daily limit recommended by the American Heart Association.U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Stopping the spread: What you need to know about measles in 2025

As of today, over 600 cases of measles have been reported across 22 states — the largest outbreak the U.S. has seen in more than a decade. Health experts say a combination of factors is driving the surge: increased international travel, communities with low vaccination rates and misinformation that continues to undermine public trust in vaccines. Measles is one of the most contagious diseases in the world. It spreads quickly, especially among those who aren't vaccinated for it. It can lead to severe symptoms, especially for children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems.  So how worried should we be here in Minnesota? How prepared is our public health system to respond if cases rise in our state? And what can we do as a community to stop the spread? MPR News host Angela Davis talks with a doctor and a state epidemiologist who specialize in infectious diseases and pediatrics. They'll break down what's happening nationally and what Minnesota is doing to stay ahead of the curve.Guests: Dr. Stacene Maroushek is a pediatrician and pediatric infectious disease specialist at Hennepin Healthcare. She is also a pediatric consultant to the Center for Disease Control's Division of Global Migration and Quarantine.  Dr. Ruth Lynfield is state epidemiologist and medical director at the Minnesota Department of Health where she is also co-principal investigator of the Minnesota Emerging Infections Program.

08/18/24The Healthy Matters PodcastS03_E20 - From Hurt to Healing:  The Power of Being Trauma-InformedToday, we're diving into a topic that's crucial but often overlooked: adverse childhood events (ACEs), and trauma-informed care (TIC). According to the CDC, nearly two-thirds of all U.S. adults have experienced one or more ACEs. That's how common they are, and the effects of these adverse events can add up over time. Many of us may not realize how deeply early experiences of stress, neglect, or trauma can shape not only our mental health but also our physical well-being. These early events leave a lasting imprint, whether through relationships, behaviors, or even how our bodies respond to stress. The good news? There's a growing movement toward trauma-informed care, which shifts the focus from asking 'What's wrong with you?' to 'What happened to you?' It's about creating a supportive environment that fosters healing and resilience. On Episode 20, we're talking about different types of traumas, and how trauma-informed care is a unique and very effective approach to help people get through the toughest times. Joining us is Dr. Mitch Radin, he's a Clinical Psychologist and an expert on trauma-informed care at Hennepin Healthcare. We'll cover the elements of TIC, how they work, and how this approach is making a difference not only with patients but also with healthcare professionals. Did you know you can control your heart through your lungs? Or have you ever heard the analogy that your brain is like a rider and a horse?
