This is normally an off week for The Splatbook, so I thought i would share an new podcast project I have been working. Zombies Strains is an attempt to understand how zombie movies came to dominate the horror genre after the year 2000. How did it all start? What makes a good zombie movie? We answer attempt to answer all of these questions and more in... Zombie Strains It's Andy's turn to present his baseline zombie film. His choice, The Girl with All the Gifts (2017), is strikingly different than John's. Fast zombies? Check. Fast transmission? Check. Hordes of children who turn into zombies at the scent of humans? That's new! Andy and John discuss this thought-provoking movie as they take another step on their zombie journey.https://zombiestrainspodcast.com/Contact Us!splatbookpod@gmail.comThe Splatphone!Roll For Topic

Can a single film redefine an entire genre? Discover how George A. Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" revolutionized zombie cinema and left a legacy that still haunts filmmakers today. Join Wes and Nick for a spine-chilling exploration of this iconic horror masterpiece, where we humorously critique the bizarre twists of Barbara's cemetery misadventure and Ben's heroic struggle to fortify a house against the undead. We unravel the quirks that give this low-budget classic its lasting charm and why a certain paper mache hand became an unforgettable element in horror history.Push past the creaky floorboards and into the cellar as we dissect the film's most intense scenes, from the showdown between Ben and the ever-cantankerous Mr. Cooper to the unsettling fate of Mrs. Cooper at her daughter's hands. Our conversation highlights how Romero's work laid the groundwork for zombie narratives, influencing everything from apocalypse settings to the enduring trope of news broadcasts amidst chaos. And as we celebrate the powerful performances of Duane Jones and Karl Hardman, get a sneak peek into our next gory tale: "Dawn of the Dead," where the dead walk when hell is full, and the shopping mall becomes a battleground. Tune into the Dumb, Cool, Weird Podcast for a frightfully entertaining journey through the undead legacy of Romero.Support the show:

Born in Haitian folklore and inadvertently reinvented by director George A. Romero, the zombie is the most flexible metaphor in horror fiction, if not all of popular culture. It can represent a war, a virus, a natural disaster, terrorism, capitalism, climate change and much more. In fact, it's hard to tell a zombie story that isn't political in one way or another. Ian Dunt and Dorian Lynskey follow the trail of the walking dead from the Caribbean to Night of the Living Dead and the global outbreak of zombiemania in the 21st century. What does the zombie tell us about life, death and civilisation? How can it contain so many different meanings? And why do the living dead remain uniquely disturbing after all these years? In this week's episode, guest Bianka Ballina discusses her article "Juan of the Dead: Anxious Consumption and Zombie Cinema in Cuba," which analyzes the complex material and ideological transformations in Cuban film over the past two decades. Ballina argues that Alejandro Brugués's film Juan de los muertos offers an opportunity to explore the circulation of anxieties around global consumption within the island. While the film contributes to the continued reformulation of Cuban and genre cinemas, it also reproduces conservative ideologies about race, gender, and sexuality in Cuba. To wrap up our Halloween special episodes, we look at the shambling hordes and the intestine-ripping fiends we all know and love, from their appearance as we know them in the late great George A. Romero's 1968 classic, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, all the way up to now, where they're everywhere. We discuss their cultural relevance, their impact on our perception of culture, and how it really wouldn't have been possible without the foresight of the aforementioned Godfather of the Undead. So barricade the doors, stock up your supplies, gather your survivors, and get out your long-planned zombie apocalypse plans (let's be honest: we've all got one, right?) for the last of our spooky specials. Up your Gory Alley Confusion is in the air this week on Cinema Eclectica with the announcement of a Play-Doh movie and the existence of the Zombie Chicken sub-basement genre. We take a look at The Duke of Burgundy, Mark of the Devil and Day of Anger in Off the Shelf, and as a special treat, we dive into Book of the Dead: The Complete History of Zombie Cinema. 20:08 minutes (14.12 MB)
