Sarah Harding - Crunchy SuperMom
Let’s imagine that it's the first day of the year and you feel the pull to create big, bad, hairy, audacious goals. The problem is looking at what you want to accomplish reminds you of what you didn't actually accomplish last year. But don't worry, statistics show that you're not alone. We are not alone. Everyone has grand ambitions as the clock strikes midnight on 12/31. On December 31, right, the gyms are packed the first few weeks of January and by February, those same gyms are running membership retention specials to try to recoup the windfall that they had in January. And they've already lost all of that progress. So what can you do, supermom, to change your outlook and your chances of success and the New Year? I say this every year, but I start my New Year routine way back in November and December and I’m here to invite you to join me in the process for yourself! We’ll be kicking off the New Year New Mom Challenge very soon so be sure to register, for free, by going to https://www.crunchysupermom.com/newyearchallengeTogether we will go through the four main steps for a fresh start over the course of 5 days. It doesn’t matter when you start this process, it doesn’t have to be on or around January 1st. It can be any time. In the New Year New Mom Challenge - we are going to be establishing the foundation of your system--because it is my system or systems that have kept me successful throughout my life. Anytime I talk to a mom who's just struggling, if you're struggling, look at your system, if you don't have one, that's why you're here. That's why you're here in the Crunchy supermom community because that's what we do together-- we create systems. There are many opportunities for you to steal my system and try it out. It will probably teach you how a good system can work but eventually, it won’t quite work for you because the key to a good system is that it needs to fit you and your life. What can you do, SuperMom to change your outlook and your chances of success in the new year?
What is Guaranteed?Strategy #4 is Money. Employment has never been guaranteed. Job volatility has always been around. There are times when our economy does well and then there are times when it does poorly. When we’re in a good place, you make money, pay bills, and make tiny bits of progress toward their big financial goals. But it’s never perfect nor will it ever. Do you have a plan for when things change drastically? Right now we're seeing a lot of problems in the job industry. There's job loss or job furlough with people not sure if they're going to have a job in the future. And then there's job vulnerability, because many jobs are at risk of being shut down or canceled. All kinds of companies and institutions are struggling to promise a paycheck for their employees because they don't know what the future holds. Virtual is the New NormalIt's really neat that some institutions like our schools have been able to move to a virtual setting. That's also dangerous because it requires fewer people to run something digitally, right? It's good for the education of the kids, but bad for the educators and other people that are involved in it. Think about the people that run the school, like the janitorial staff, the cafeteria staff, and all those other people. If you're not there in person, they don't really have a job. So there's a lot of vulnerability in jobs right now. Working Until RetirementThere's also a lot of overworked employees right now, like police officers, medical and health care professionals, and even some of the restaurant staff like the ones that do the delivery services like InstaCart, UberEats.I’m sure they’re overworked. I'm also sure they're happy because finding a job and finding steady income right now can be really challenging. We were already told that if we haven't figured out a way to make money in our sleep, that we're going to end up working until we die. D.I.E. And that's actually very true. https://www.crunchysupermom.com/blog/shift-focus-4
There Is No "Right" Time to Follow Your DreamsI know. It's kind of a sad reality check right there to hear that, but it's the truth. There's always going to be another reason why your goals are going to need to take the backseat. There's going to be another baby (that happened to me - our third baby was a total surprise). There's going to be toddlerhood, you're going to have a spirited child, one of your children will be more difficult than the other. There's going to be sports when they get older. There's gonna be childhood activities. That activity list gets so long, even when we say no to everything. We're spending a lot of time traveling, doing things, paying for things, buying her the right outfit for the things, making sure clothes fit... (oh my gosh, don't even get me started on shopping for three girls).Get the Guide to Getting Shit Done - FREE - Here.
Sit down, make a plan for the future and change your mindset.Do you currently believe that you are resilient? Do you currently see yourself as a supermom? Why don't you believe that you can homeschool and work from home? Why don’t you believe you can deal with whatever is about to come your way?Why do you believe that? Have you not gone through worse stuff? Get the Super Mom's Guide to Getting Shit Done, Free, here.
How Modernization Has Changed LifeWhen you have constant access to the internet, that means you can constantly work and that also means that your employer can constantly contact you and expect a really quick response. The problem with that is that you're working more and probably getting paid the same. You're not able to create the true American dream that you want, because you might have your white picket fence and you might have your fully loaded SUV, but you're working so much to pay for those things. It's awful when you're a salary worker because you get paid the same no matter how many hours you work, and sometimes you have to work until the job gets done. Which is the case in our household for my husband. It's a salaried job.Do we ever have the time to use our money to impact the world in a way that makes us feel good? ==>> Read more on the blog==>> Get the Super Mom's Guide to Getting Sh¡t Done

In this episode we're going to spend some time talking about marriage. It's not a topic I cover often because marriage is one of those tricky subjects that none of us are really experts in. And however, I have a friend named Cindy Maxwell, who's on this episode with me today and I want to have her share her wisdom because she was the one who pointed me in the direction of a book called love and respect. By Dr. Emerson Eggeret. I hope I said his name correctly. So I just want to tell you a little bit about Cindy. She has been a you've been married for 17 years. And then you have she has six kids and she's been homeschooling them for seven years and she's like she's a Crunchy SuperMom Sarah Harding run a babywearing group. The reason I reached out to Cindy is that I really believe that when a husband and wife are having, you know, issues, going and talking to your friends seems like the logical first step, but it's actually not I feel like you need to have permission of your spouse to really talk to someone about marital issues.

Or get your FREE More than Just a Mom Action Plan. Moms Who Do It AllNow 18 months ago I had way too much going on. I was sick, my husband was deploying, I was running this Crunchy Supermom business, homeschooling, doing some contract work to create enough income to cover my student loans and of course- volunteering to help breastfeeding moms, launch a local food co op, coaching basketball and I’m sure I’m leaving off some other stuff...I couldn’t tell you then why I was doing all those things. Most of it made me stressed out and unhappy but looking back- I know now I was looking for a way to feel like I was contributing to the greater good...to making an impact on the lives of others.
SuperMom is real. You are SuperMom. I am SuperMom. Let me tell you just one SuperMom story… After months of being unable to get out of the house and weeks of being unable to get out of bed due to the onset of severe vertigo after the birth of our third child in 2014, I was resentful. Prior to the onset of my affliction, I had all the perfect systems and routines in place in our lives. A bout with vestibular neuritis left me unable to maintain my normal life--and that meant SuperMom had died. During my struggle there were many days where I wasn’t able to carry my 5-month-old from the bedroom to the nursery, standing upright long enough to play with my kids outside made me sick and I couldn’t get the rest I needed because my room wouldn’t stop spinning day after day, night after night. A condition that should have lasted a few days, maybe a week or two at most, plagued me for months and left me with permanent damage that continued to impact my life for years. As the condition persisted and the reality that this was the new normal for me set in, my inner voice turned on me.It said: SuperMom is dead.
There are a lot of ways to get through life but not all of them are ideal. The words mom and overwhelm are so connected that being overwhelmed is just an expectation. It is considered normal. Overwhelm isn't a feeling we should experience persistently as we navigate life. If you are overwhelmed and you know you don't want to exist in such a negative state as you go through your life as a mom, then you are in good company. Crunchy SuperMom has built a community of like-minded moms who just don't believe the image of SuperMom that society tries to paint.STEP 1: Define What SuperMom means to youScrub your eyes, ears, and mind of those negative thoughts that tell you to hang up your cape. Hanging up your cape will result in only one thing: more overwhelm! If you don't do the dishes, who will? If you don't juggle kid events and nutritious meals for your family, who will? How does hanging up your cape help you achieve any of your goals? It doesn't! Define what SuperMom means to you without allowing any outside influences to alter your vision.

With a clear plan of action, your responsibility is to take those action steps every day. I say this a lot on the Crunchy SuperMom show- it is more painful to skip a step than it is to power through and do the step today. An example: I had the flu worse than I’d ever had the flu before- so I had the choice one morning- throw a rock solid frozen whole chicken into the instant pot--which was above the refrigerator...and you know how painful it is to change the position of your head when it is pounding...so I could grab it- go downstairs and pull a chicken from the depths of my deep freeze and turn it on for dinner OR I could not do that and have nothing to feed my not sick kids later in the day when I would surely feel worse. So I help my SuperMoms get into the mindset of not putting off until later what they can do right now...because the discomfort later will always be worse than the discomfort of doing it now. I never felt like I was failing at motherhood until my third pregnancy was followed by a debilitating chronic illness the same year my husband spent his career traveling, leaving me to solo-parent all three of our kids. ALL I DID WAS LIE IN BED AND WATCH THE ROOM SPIN DREADING THE MOMENT ONE OF THE SMALL VOICES WOULD CALL OUT TO ME-- BECAUSE I COULDN’T COME, EVEN IF I TRIED. MY HOUSE FELL TO PIECES. BELIEVING IT WOULD END “ANY DAY NOW”, WE MADE THE BEST OF IT. And really that just meant that I accepted my struggle as my reality...something I could not change. After 5 months I finally saw a fork in the road: Continue barely surviving and enduring tremendous guilt over all the moments I was missing. Or Do something! EVERYTHING CHANGED THE DAY I CHOSE TO DO SOMETHING… I was declared “recovered” because I could stand up and move around. I could see straight enough to leave the house but not quite well enough to drive. One day, a woman, not yet a mom, came by my house for her produce delivery and she said- "how do you do it all with this condition you have?" And another, a mom this time, said, "You know, God is trying to get your attention. You need to listen!" And she was right. All the years I had been listening and serving moms in my community. I got asked all the time, "How do you do it all and won’t you show me how?" And I did. So what was I missing this time? But in that moment, all I felt was cheated and angry. So I took pen to paper (and by that, I mean, I wrote a blog.) I set it all out for moms to see. This is what it takes for me to “do it all.” And I addressed it to them all - the “wannabe SuperMoms”. I’ll admit, my heart wasn’t right when I shared it all that night. But what came next, was all part of God’s plan. https://www.crunchysupermom.com/latest https://www.facebook.com/groups/crunchysupermoms
Finding time in the day to “do it all” is something of a skill and has absolutely nothing to do with luck or even having the right amount of things on your proverbial plate. This skill is something that you absolutely can develop, especially through the SuperMom Academy. Easy: knowing that all you have to do is ONE thing for 20 minutes and then you get a 5 min break is motivating. Old way: stare at a pile of laundry and dread doing it. New way: set a timer for 20 min and fold laundry ONLY until the timer goes off. Results: Magically, the entire pile gets finished in 20 min. I don’t know about you but normally a mountain of laundry takes me an hour or more. Not with the focus of the timer! It’s best to use an app to help you track your time. The problem with coffee is that no matter how many health benefits you receive from it (supposedly and depending on which study you read and the source of your coffee), there is still the potential for an energy crash once it wears off. No mom needs that. Brianne and I are both major coffee lovers but we've discovered a clean energy drink that's actually beneficial to your health. There is no addiction and no crash. In fact, I personally reduced my coffee intake to 4 ounces or less and not every single day! I've been drinking coffee since I was 8 (yes really) so this is a very big deal. How many of you all have ever looked at other moms and thought, “well, she looks perfect so of course, she can get everything done and still have time to be the best mom!" If you have, you’re not alone. It is easy to judge by what we see on the outside and assume the success another mom has isn’t something we can have for ourselves. And the story behind why Sarah started Crunchy Super Mom really began with a huge struggle that is similar to any struggle moms overcome. I wasn’t always productive and confident in my role as a mom and the manager of my home. See, in 2014, my husband’s career left me to solo parent our children. Shortly after the birth of my third child, a life-changing health crisis altered my reality completely. I spent months with 24/7 nausea and dizziness and I was definitely not able to enjoy every precious moment with my little ones. It felt like my disorder was completely robbing me of life. But after months of getting nowhere with this new condition, I was at the bottom - and somehow I had this moment of clarity I realized my struggle really wasn’t that unique. I was giving it too much power. Moms everywhere go through all sorts of things every day. I was convinced that since struggling isn’t unique then there has to be something we can all do to get out of any situation that isn’t our ideal. I realized that it would make all the difference if I just shifted my view of the situation. I’m not talking about saying some affirmations or getting pumped up and motivated… I’m talking about taking one small, step. forward. Despite my persistent illness, I decided to just take a step and it actually worked. I mean- I was still unable to carry my baby around the house because of my condition and my husband was still gone but I had this new mindset and this one step pushed me forward anyway. I had goals after I became a stay-at-home mom instead of a career woman- and once I applied this new approach I was able to have a tidy home, cook from scratch, homeschool my kids, and still have a little time for myself even with my health challenges. You can create daily or weekly traditions like the ones we mentioned on the show. On our PowerPlan for this show, we will be focusing on seasonal traditions, but we encourage you to take it a step further if you can and start a daily or even a weekly tradition. A connection is what we really are striving for as parents, but with a toddler’s strong will, it can leave you butting heads instead of connecting like you would like to. Your toddler’s strong will can come as a shock in the beginning. That will of a toddler is instant gratification of all needs. From birth until age 3, a conscious will doesn’t truly exist. This may be of some comfort to you when you reflect on your toddler’s behavior after a challenging day. Until the period of 3-6 years, your child is merely absorbing information and reacting in mostly reflexive ways. Controlling or forcing a child’s behavior at this age is futile and will only result in a breakdown of her development. Instead, there are some simple steps that you can follow that will allow you to connect with your toddler as well as positively shape their behavior. GET THE LIST OF TIPS AND OUR RESOURCES HERE THE TIPS Make sure your toddler knows the family routine, what is going to happen, and try to have predictable routines that your little one understands and can anticipate. Now, that is sort of three things in one, but the basic idea is to have routines and communicate those to your little one. Let them know what is going to happen and when. Have realistic expectations about what your toddler can handle as well as the stage they are in developmentally. Home is the ideal place for most toddlers, but we do have to leave the house sometimes especially when you have older kids. This means that you have to set up your day so you can try to leave the house at times that it will work around naps and fussy times. And during those times, and especially if you have to leave at a time that is not ideal, you can have sensory type “go” bags packed for your toddler to help keep them entertained and calm. We recommend having these pre-packed for the specific activity you have to take your toddler out for so you can literally just grab it before you walk out the door….a “go” bag. There are lots of ideas for these here so you can plan out your own “go” bags. Indoor air quality inside my home was not something that I really considered to be a potential hazard for my family. In fact, I was shocked to discover scientific evidence indicating that the air inside a home can be more polluted than even a large, industrial city. Get our free Power Plan & Show Notes so you can take action on everything you learn. What I also learned is that most homes do not mechanically bring any fresh air into the house. This includes forced air heating systems like so many homes have. This lack of ventilation means that everything we were doing inside our house affected our air quality. Chemicals used within our home would hang in the air and cling to our dust because we had no outside ventilation. It is so crazy to think about the fact that we just have so little way of getting fresh air into our homes and no one seems to talk about the fact that cleaning products with toxic chemicals can literally just hang in the air we breathe. Fortunately, these natural cleaning products are readily available at grocery stores and online these days, but I also try to save money by making my own. When I first started trying to make the cleaning products I felt like it was overwhelming to be able to replace all of the cleaners I used with homemade varieties. However, it truly can be simple and we are going to list some of our favorite replacements for the toxic chemicals.
We are talking about our favorite tips on how to organize after decluttering. You might be thinking, isn’t organization the same thing as decluttering or doesn’t it go hand in hand? Well, our answer is “yes”....but...there is more. Click here to get the power plan. Like so much of what we do there is a system or a rhythm to organization and decluttering and while they do often go together they are also separate. If you have trouble figuring out how to organize the spaces in your home or how to get into a good system of organizing and decluttering this is definitely an episode you want to listen to. We have a new segment in our podcasts where we answer a listener question. This week it was about the dishes routines we use. If you are struggling with taming your sink full of dishes, you should listen to our answers! Tip #1 Do not feel overwhelmed by looking at the big picture. You may have already decluttered, but trying to organize is still a huge job. Sometimes just looking at an area that is disorganized can make you feel like getting it under control is impossible. Remember, one small step at a time is key and this is why we are going to be giving you a zone worksheet in the Power Plan so you can break down your disorganized areas into small zones and it won’t feel like it is impossible. Tip #7 Create a schedule for regular organization. Keeping an area organized is so much easier than having to do a complete overhaul. If you schedule regular intervals of decluttering your zones, you will be able to keep everything well organized with very little effort. Join our community We hope that this podcast has provided you with a better idea of exactly how you can organize after decluttering. We appreciate all of you listening, thank you! 8 tips to get kids to declutter. I know, I know...you are probably thinking these tips will not help because wow, let’s face it, decluttering with the kids can feel like a battleground! But I promise, decluttering will actually help you end the battles and it is worth some temporary struggles during the decluttering process. But hopefully, with these tips, you won’t even face any of the struggles. And the beautifully amazing benefit is that with less clutter, your children will actually be able to clean their rooms without feeling overwhelmed! I remember watching my young child face a huge mess and instantly being hit with the realization that he wasn’t just being difficult by refusing to clean up his toys...he was literally overwhelmed by his toys and the sheer amount he had pulled out. After implementing these tips, our lives changed and we saw a huge difference in his attitude and ability to feel in control of his toys, his room, and also his attitude about cleaning up. Tip #1 Set a timer, keep it short, and only tackle an area that you know you can get done with during that timer window. This might mean that you need to complete a zone worksheet with your child so you can decide together (if your child is old enough for this) how to divide the room into certain “tackle zones” that can be completed in short bursts of activity. If your child knows that they will only have to declutter for a short period of time, and if they know ahead of time what they will be decluttering, you will have addressed two major battles before even getting started. Hopefully, just by seeing the short amount of time required to declutter and also the small area that they are going to tackle during that time, they will not feel overwhelmed. One of my children has a much easier time with decluttering if he knows in advance that we are going to be addressing that area soon as he can process that things in that toy area will be changing soon. We are giving you our zone worksheet in our Power Plan so you can have that all ready for your decluttering project. Tip #2 Make it a game and set the rules before you actually get started. My kids have watched the HGTV show- Love It or List It, so we play this game fairly often with clothes, books, and toys. If you haven’t seen this show- basically a homeowner has a house they want to renovate in one area and HGTV does that while the homeowner looks at a new house to buy. At the end- they get to decide if they will love it--their remodeled home, or list it--and move into the home they found to buy. My kids LOVE doing this with their clothes and room items. It’s amazing how many things they actually part with willingly that I would never have tossed if I had been making the decision. Tip #3 Get cubes, boxes, bins, baskets or anything--make sure it all has a “home”. If you haven’t already, help them get the area under control by using bins or boxes and help them understand that their toys must fit into that bin or box. Instead of using one bin or toy box, divide the toys into types and have a bin, box, or basket for each of those. Get them to ask themselves easy questions: Do you love this toy and play with it often? Do they have room in their bin to keep this toy or is the bin overflowing? Make sure to sort the toys with either “like items” or with how they play. For example, we have certain castle blocks with their knights because they always play with those together. However, something like stuffed animals always stay in the same bin together. Tip #4 On the same topic of bins, it is important to have a set space for all of the toy bins and if there is no more room for a bin, something else has to go for the most treasured items to stay. If it is too hard to get rid of some of the toys, you can absolutely rotate toy bins. If you don’t have enough room for the toy bins to stay organized, you can rotate out toys. This means that you will have to store toy bins in the attic, garage, or basement, but it is a good way to entertain the children with “new” toys. Some people do this even if they have room because it often allows kids to get some renewed interest in old toys if they are taken away for awhile. Tip #5 Pair down the clothes because they can make a room sloppy and impossible to clean. Go through all of the clothes or at least a section of the closet. Have a bag or box for donating or perhaps a garage sale already for the items that no longer fit and can’t be handed down to younger siblings. If your child does not ever wear certain items, now is a great time to simply get rid of them. You can develop a strategy on how many items of clothing that are needed and agree on that with your child. This is also a great zone to play love it or list it. Tip #6 Prepare for holidays and birthdays by decluttering before any gifts are actually opened. Something like a holiday or birthday where lots of gifts are given can mean a messy room or playroom for weeks while you try to get things under control. You can proactively manage this by decluttering and making at least some space before any of those gifs are actually unwrapped. Tip #7 help them let go of items by talking about giving to other children in need. Children often have a difficult time parting with items, but that can be mitigated by talking about the needs of other children who might not have as many things. Children can be very empathetic and sometimes they will get rid of more toys simply because they know that they will go to other homes and be well loved. Tip #8 Model good behavior and have a great attitude about decluttering. If you can have a positive attitude during decluttering, and be able to talk about the benefits in children's’ terms, decluttering will never feel like a negative thing. Some ideas to discuss during the decluttering process include how you will be able to spend less time cleaning and more time as a family now that no one will have to be managing a ton of clutter. One of the key elements of our Super Mom Solution is helping moms obstacle proof their routines. What this means is foreseeing changes in the season (and I’m using quotes there) and having a new backup routine already in mind. DST is the perfect example of this. Right now, if you are like us, you have a routine that’s working fairly well for you but your kids may already be waking more, sleeping later, going to bed later, or some other combination of totally wrecking your evening and morning routines and your sleep. It is this kind of foresight that we teach in the Super Mom Solution. We apply it to all of our routines from Meal Planning and Laundry to Self Care and Mindset. We want to give you a test drive of the Super Mom Solution with a coupon code SUPERMOMSHOW. Click the link in the description or shownotes to find out more. What is a super mom? What does Super Mom look like for Sarah? For Mandy? Do you currently see yourselves as Super Moms?
We have huge problems with clutter. It can make us have chest closing anxiety at times. We feel out of control and will start to wonder if we can ever get our lives back in order. It is safe to say that clutter defeats us and keeps us from getting things accomplished. Get our FREE Clutter Cure Mini Guide. Subscribe: ApplePodcasts Sarah’s recent experience: I’m not a huge purchaser either so it isn’t like I bring in a lot of stuff for my family. However, we had an overwhelming amount of clothes for our children until a friend pointed out that the reason my entire house was a mess (for the first time in many years) was the LAUNDRY. It was everywhere. Since reducing the clothing by gallons, I have had no trouble keeping my home in order. It is unreal how something like children’s clothes can just overwhelm and keep you from a tidy home. Clutter can creep up and suddenly you have a house that really isn’t ever clean. Mandy’s experience: What typically happens to me is that I will unconsciously collect clutter and then think that I need to just get more organized. I will organize well and that stays nice for a little while, but shortly it is back in disarray and I can’t understand why. And then it hits me, it is the clutter! I am moving around stuff and trying to “organize”, but what I need to do is actually get rid of the junk! There is NO way to be truly organized if you have a cluttered space. This same cycle that I just described happens to me all too often. And that is why you absolutely must have routines in place for decluttering. Decluttering routines must regularly change with the season you are experiencing in life such as having a baby, moving, dealing with a non-napping toddler, etc. Sarah has used the Marie Kondo method for decluttering with great results: Some of the key principles she spells out that resonated were: Thank an item for the joy it brought you when you received it/brought it into your home or thank it for the joy the giver had when they gave it to you...then LET IT GO if it no longer serves you or brings you joy. This helped reduce keepsakes and other things. Along those same lines- saving things that go along with memories is unnecessary. You’ll always have that joyful moment that goes along with the item, but do you really need the actual item? Storing things you “might” use actually costs you money. Calculate the amount of space storage stuff takes up and divide it by the mortgage/rent. That’s how much a tub costs to store. When I did this a few years ago, one pink tub was costing me $22 to store. JUST to store. Sometimes stuff is meant to be bought and tossed. If you felt joy and bought something and a day later the joy was gone- getting rid of it is NOT a bad thing. Maybe just buy less and really think about whether the item is useful, beautiful and joy-bringing before buying it. But, don’t think twice about passing on something that no longer fits that criteria. Society is all about reducing waste and consumerism--and I agree, Marie Kondo agrees, but that does not mean keep all the stuff you buy if it is useless to you! Send it on its way to bring joy to someone else. Mandy’s current method for decluttering: I do short bursts of decluttering and organization that helps me keep my home decluttered in just a few minutes a day. Now I don’t have to panic and feel like I need this huge chunk of time to get my house in order. Another important exercise is completing a vision for your home. Ask yourself, what sort of vision do you have of your home? Do you have specific reasons for wanting to declutter? Remember, this is not the vision of someone else, but your own true vision for your home and family. What works for one person will not fit for the next person. You need to create this vision so you can stay motivated and follow through with your decluttering routine because clutter is such a huge distraction. You may not currently have the answers to questions such as these, but print out our Vision worksheet to help you develop a clear vision of what you would like your home to be. Clutter makes us feel out of control and sucks away our time and we want to help you get started on your decluttering mission. Make sure you tune into the podcast to hear that segment and find out what we discovered! Designing the perfect daily routine Your first step in designing the perfect daily routine is to closely examine what you are doing now and discover where your time is well-used and where it is wasted. Routine doesn’t necessarily mean a rigidly scheduled series of events. It means something a little more loose like--a rhythm. You might already have a bit of a rhythm where one action follows another naturally. This is the best kind of routine when children and families are involved. Many studies show children (and most adults) thrive in orderly environments that have a predictable routine. This doesn’t have to mean following a schedule around the clock. If you don’t currently have any sort of routine or rhythm but you have a growing to-do list, I think it is safe to say that you need to get some sort of action plan in place!! The “Must”, “Should”, and “Could” Dos Step 1: write down your must, should, and could dos under each day of the week. This step might take you awhile as you will continue to add new tasks as they come up. Some ideas to include are laundry, showering, dishes, workout time, work tasks, meals, chores, commuting, and family time. Step 2: use a timer and follow your task list to see the amount of time it takes to complete each task. At the end of this exercise, you might have to make the difficult decision to let go of tasks that just simply do not fit in your life right now. As hard as it is to say “no”, it will reduce stress in your life and ultimately improve your health, both mentally and physically. Step 3: look back at your list and ask yourself if you are being realistic. As moms, we have long to-do lists, and often overestimate what we can actually get done. These unrealistic expectations can lead to feelings of defeat. Is your plan making you exhausted before you even start your week? Does it just look impossible to get accomplished? It may be time to say “no” especially if you feel like your health is suffering from being overtaxed. Does saying “no” bring anxiety. It does for us! But the alternative is not pretty either. Saying “no” can involve something as difficult as telling a friend or family member that you cannot do a task or meet an expectation. Or, it can be as simple as purging your own tasks off of your list of expectations that you set for your week. Look at your time diary, are you noticing that your day is broken up by so many little things? As moms with little kids, we know that running a simple errand can completely derail your day and mean that nothing on your to-do list gets done! It is important to make sure that you are not fragmenting your day with little tasks and especially little-unplanned tasks. Saying “no” can also be to yourself. Do you need to say no to all the time you are spending dealing with emails? How about a “no” to time on the phone, social media, or running meetings, groups, etc. Maybe you don’t need to eliminate it completely out of your life, but maybe you need to scale back your responsibilities. After week one of your timer exercises and most definitely by the end of week two, you will have a few thorns that stick out at you. One might be a habit or responsibility that you have taken on that is derailing your productivity. That habit could be something like checking email more than twice per day. There may be some responsibility you’ve taken on that is simply not in the plan for you in this season of your life because you already have a full plate. Whatever the case may be, the timer exercises will give you concrete evidence of where your time is going and how much of it you have left to spend. A few ideas for your routine Now we want to share with you some of our favorite ideas that will help you build out a routine that really works….a routine that will mean you are not constantly reacting to life and instead are proactively managing every aspect of your day. Get up before the craziness of the day starts. It is amazing how this can make you feel so much more in control and will also significantly reduce anxiety. Create a moment that you look forward to every day so getting up early isn’t as painful. Decide what really matters for the day and ignore the rest. So much of our day can be completely consumed by reacting instead of addressing our true priorities. At the end of the day, we are completely frustrated by the fact that we did not get anything done on our “to do” list even though we worked all day. Attempt to determine the hours in your day when you can be most productive and maximize that time. Make your morning routine such a habit that you don’t even have to think about it. Use the snooze function on Facebook Support We hope that this podcast has provided you with the realization that you can design a routine that will help you feel like a SuperMom that can get stuff done. Hey SuperMoms! I’m Mandy, and I’m Sarah. We are your hosts and the creators of the Crunchy SuperMom blog. Today we are talking about the concept of SuperMom perfection and why we all want it. You may not feel like a SuperMom or you might have already “hung up your cape” and stopped even trying to feel like a SuperMom. But isn’t there somewhere deep inside that still wants it? I know that was (and still is!) true for me. In this episode, we are going to offer you a new perspective and hopefully the realization that you CAN do it all. Just stay tuned to find out how and make sure you grab our PowerPlan at the end for specific directions on how to achieve all of this without feeling overwhelmed. Be sure to subscribe so you never miss an episode! Get the Power Plan at Crunchy Super Mom. Why are people always telling overwhelmed moms to hang up the super mom cape? I really dislike this statement because I feel like it is just giving up and settling. And for me, that would lead to frustration and probably depression. Even though I am still striving toward my own SuperMom ideals, I need to know that I AM working toward them and that they ARE possible. While I don’t like to hear the statement “hang up the cape”, I do understand why that message is being put out there. As moms, we are constantly being bombarded with messages about how we are not enough, how we need to strive for a certain ideal, how we need to do more, give more, and basically be perfect. Those messages are incredibly damaging. We do need to reject those. However, we do not need to give up on the idea that we can be a SuperMom of our own life and on our own terms. We do not need to let go of the things that will make us be more calm, productive, patient, and loving with our families. We simply need to let go of the world’s many ideas of what a SuperMom is and reject any and all pressure the outside world puts on us to strive for some ideal that is not truly what we want. We get it, moms are overwhelmed with all the things they do in life. Mom puts pressure on herself. Her partner, her job, her church, her kids’ school and activities…. They all task moms with more to do every day. We know we should all say, “no”, a lot more than we do but that still doesn’t exactly empty our proverbial plates of stuff to do! That’s why we want to squash the concept of hanging up the Super Mom cape. Instead, we want you to reframe the concept, realize you ARE a SuperMom, and strive for your own personal SuperMom ideals. Before we talk about what is wrong with the concept of “hanging up the cape”, let’s just do a little hypothetical situation here. Mandy, what would happen if you hung up your cape?
Having kids means sickness and germs play a very big role in mom’s life. And boy does it stink when she falls ill! Not having a sick day routine in place means that as soon as mom gets well, she has the joy of cleaning every square inch of my house, grocery shopping, redoing the meal plan and likely catching up on days of laundry. Our 2-Minute Tear Apart is where we closely examine something we have come across in our lives to determine if it fits our goal of living a healthy life. The Heavy Mental Load Just to be up front at the beginning, we are both work at home moms so we will be referencing moms a lot because we are talking about our own thoughts and feelings. However, we feel these thoughts really do pertain to both moms and dads and we don’t want to exclude anyone. Additionally, we could do a whole show on the issues and emotions that a work outside the home mother or father have to deal with. But for today, we are going to limit ourselves and talk about the parent that stays home, does the unseen work, and carries the bulk of the mental load. We are going to show you how creating routines and sharing them with your partner can bring relief from the heavy mental load. Self-care is especially important for SuperMoms! All too often we are meeting the needs, ALL the needs, of our family and we put ourselves dead last. While this might be necessary sometimes, doing it all the time can lead to overwhelm and even resentment. We have created a challenge to help you examine whether you actually take any time for self-care and then also figure out what would "fill your cup" and make you feel cared for. This quick tear apart is where we closely examine something we have come across in our lives to determine if it fits our goal of living a healthy life. At the end of the 2 Minutes we should know whether that item or practice gets the SuperMom seal of approval or whether SuperMoms everywhere should be shaking their heads in disappointment. Our Tear Apart this week focused on an item with the Whole30 seal of approval. We were absolutely shocked to find out what it contained! What you will learn about developing a self-care routine: Our challenge will help you jumpstart your self-care routine and it begins with a determining if you have anything in your life/routine right now that "fills your cup". We plan on talking more in depth on this subject in the future so make sure you subscribe so you don't miss those episodes. Step One: To start examining your self care routine, print the Power Plan and write down what you currently do that makes you feel fulfilled (brainstorm and write directly inside the Power Plan). Also in the podcast and Power Plan, we share our self-care routines just to give you an idea on what it can look like for two other SuperMoms. However, this truly is individual and will vary widely based on the SuperMom and also the stage of life you are currently in with your family. We have links included so you can easily examine each idea and see how to incorporate it into your lives. Subscribe so you don't miss the next two episodes in this series on getting your home and life together right now. Step One: To start developing your own cleaning routine, print the Power Plan. You’ll want to take the Transfer of Information sheet and write out all the chores you want to do daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annually. Use our suggested lists if you prefer! Things like dusting, scrubbing the bathrooms, and mopping should be done every week not only because it keeps your house in great shape, but also because if you let it slide, it becomes a mammoth job! Cleaning it weekly might sound time-consuming, but keeping this practice up means that a chore like scrubbing the bathroom doesn’t take that long because it truly isn’t that dirty. Letting it go for weeks on end really does mean you will spend longer on the cleaning over time. Tidying up clutter, wiping down all surfaces like the kitchen counter and bathroom sinks, should be done daily. It is really up to you what you want to do monthly. Some examples of monthly chores are cleaning out closets or cabinets. Quarterly chores are often the things I really don’t love to do like pulling out the fridge and cleaning behind it or washing curtains or duvet covers and couch covers. Annual chores are often larger and can include repainting, or scrubbing down and fixing up certain areas of the house that might have taken a beating, like a laundry room. Let's get started designing a healthy eating routine and talk about what that looks like for other SuperMoms like you who want to feed their families the highest quality food but still not spend all your time in the kitchen or all your budget on food. Design Your Own Healthy Eating Routine While we are definitely talking all about food, we aren’t dishing out a bunch of advice on what you should exactly be eating. Instead, we are just going to run you through how to improve some of the diet choices you are making right now, maybe making choices to include more minimally processed foods, and also talking about our personal stories on how we manage to feed our families without going broke or more importantly, without going crazy. We have found some ways to make our lives in the kitchen both easy and healthy. But before we really dive in I think it is worth mentioning our personal eating philosophy. We both really believe that the best diet for any family is one that is based on food that is minimally processed and this can mean that it is sustainably raised and grown from high-quality sources or some that is minimally processed. It is different for each family. We also believe that no one diet style is right for every person. Basically, our thought is that we will say just eat real food and try to leave all of the dogma out of our discussions.
