Marriage Conflict Resolution With Howard Dayton

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs Ephesians 4:29 That's a great verse to keep in mind when talking with anyone, but especially your spouse, and especially when you're having a disagreement! We'll talk about that with Howard Dayton today. Howard Dayton is the founder of Compass Finances God's Way and author of Money and Marriage God's Way. Money and Marriage has a chapter devoted to how to resolve conflicts over money. It's something all married couples should learn! Money is one of the most common areas of conflict for couples. God knew that we'd have conflict and even anger in our marriages. But when we seek to resolve anger, we can keep it from becoming a sin that damages our relationship. Romans 12:18 tell us, "If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone." But you might be surprised to learn that conflict isn't always bad. In fact, it can be a tool for strengthening the relationship. Like a thunderstorm that can be terrifying but helps clean the air. When conflict is handled correctly, two people share their hearts with each other in a caring and positive way, trying to listen and be heard while connecting on a deep level. Unfortunately, many couples don't know how to handle conflict well. There are three factors that are essential to converting harmful conflicts into healthy ones: 1. Goodwill on the part of both spouses 2. A written agreement on how to conduct themselves during a conflict 3. Understanding the importance of forgiveness GOODWILL When conflict comes, loving and wanting the best for each other form the foundation for handling it in a healthy manner. The more your spouse's trust account is filled, the more your mate is certain of your love, the greater the goodwill between the two of you and the easier it is to work through difficult issues. Ask yourself if these verses accurately describe your attitude toward your spouse: 1 Corinthians 13:4 and 5, Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. Love is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. And verse 7 goes on to say, Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. If you're not treating your spouse in these ways, we encourage you to spend time with the Lord asking Him to change your heart and your actions. Be candid with your wife or husband and ask for forgiveness for your actions. As you are faithful to live out these powerful verses, you and your marriage will be transformed. WRITTEN AGREEMENT It's crucial for couples to write down agreed-upon ground rules for healthy conflictbefore that conflict erupts. Your agreement should be designed to foster open communication, love and respect for each other, and the resolution of a problem. THE NEVERS: You should never threaten divorce during conflict, never confront your spouse in public, never nag, never verbally attack, and never resurrect the past. THE ALWAYS: Instead of those things, always ask permission to address the conflict. That sets the stage for resolution. Always invite God to be part of your discussion. Always admit when you're wrong. Always listen. Always keep your arguments out of the bedroom, as that's a place for unity and intimacy, not hashing out differences. Always stick to the subject. Always deal with disagreements as soon as possible. And always decide on a plan. FORGIVENESS God realizes it's tremendously important for couples to forgive each other. Genuine forgiveness is a key to healthy conflict and a great marriage. When you have wronged your mate, be quick to sincerely apologize and ask for forgiveness. And if you were the one wronged, be quick to forgive. You can read more in Howard Dayton's book Money and Marriage God's Way. Guest Speaker : Mark Borsuk Introduction For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation; but the sorrow of the world produces death.  1 Corinthians 7:10 Genuine repentance trusts in the character of God.  (V.1-2; 7-10)  a. God's Grace - “Be Gracious” - A plea for underserved favor from God b. Steadfast Love - speaks not so much of God's mercy, but of his loyalty to His covenant. Psalm 25:7; Psalm 130:7; Ps 136; Psalm 138:2 Isaiah 54:10 It is at the cross where we see God's lovingkindness, His steadfast love, His New Covenant promise that Christ's perfect life has been imputed (applied) to us. This is the gospel, but it is the gospel that we need to remember and apply every day of our lives. (cf. 2Cor 5:17-21) Compassion -A deep awareness and sympathy for our need. Forgiveness - God can do what no human priest can Blot Out 2) Wash 3) Cleanse Isaiah 44:21-23 “Shout for joy…for the LORD has done it!” I. Genuine repentance does not minimize sin. a. Transgression (vv. 1,3) rebellion, revolt Those who reject God's authority and therefore cause a breach of relationship. b. Iniquity (vv. 2, 5, 9) – crooked, twisted, or perverse behavior. c. Sin (vv. 2, 4, 9) – miss the mark or fall short. d. Evil (v. 4) – As Defined by God. e. Blood guiltiness (v. 14) – shedding of innocent blood often through violence. II. Genuine repentance expresses the  justification of God. (v. 4) David does not vindicate himself, he vindicates God. III. Genuine repentance renews Joy in salvation (vv. 8, 12, 14) Guilt keeps us in a pattern of joylessness (cf. Ps 32:3-4) David's joy was not lost because he sinned, David sinned because he had already lost his joy in God.“The enjoyment of God is the only happiness with which our souls can be satisfied.” Jonathan Edwards IV. Genuine repentance leads to a focus on evangelism. (v. 13) People are not looking for perfect lives, they are looking for how God has met us through Christ in our sin, in our brokenness, in the same struggles of daily life that they are experiencing. Genuine repentance produces genuine worship from a broken humble heart (vv. 15-17) … as sorrowful yet always rejoicing, as poor yet making many rich, as having nothing yet possessing all things.    2 Corinthians 6:10

WOW Word - Forgiveness True forgiveness is not just saying sorry!! Forgiveness is to include penitence and also a desire never to do that same thing again. Forgiveness of course is a major part of Christianity, both in the way that God forgives when approached in penitence and repentance, but also in the way Christians forgive others and themselves! In both giving and receiving forgiveness, consider Jesus Christ and the enormity of His forgiveness. Paul writes in Colossians 3:12-14 that forgiveness is part of the being in God’s family of Christians! If God forgave you for all that you have done wrong, then you also should forgive others, regardless of how difficult that might be to do. Nobody said it would always be easy though! Forgiveness enables you to have the same openness toward the person after they offend you, as you did before the event – if not more! When you truly forgive the person who has wronged you, any hurt you have will diminish. Receiving and Giving Forgiveness But why do we need to both receive and give forgiveness? Apart from being commanded to, a vast number of emotional and psychological problems are caused by failure to either give or to receive forgiveness. There is a failure to receive forgiveness. Many people try to pay for their sin by trying to punish themselves for they're past sins. These people should let go, because God has forgiven them, just as they asked! There is a failure to give forgiveness. When forgiveness is not offered to a person who has done you wrong, bitterness, resentment and anger may spring up in your life. There are parents who hurt; siblings who fail; and close friends who betray and reject. Yet forgive is the command, and it can only be done as the Holy Spirit and His power is relied upon. By receiving and giving forgiveness, you will find an ability to love God more and love others more openly. Don’t let bitter unforgiveness destroy you and others, but rather let love & forgiveness build and strengthen. God and Forgiveness God’s ultimate concern is your holiness and not just your happiness, as you are transformed into the image of Jesus Christ! God is concerned not just about what is happening to you, but also what you are learning and how you are responding in His workshop of life, as you are being transformed. This involves both giving and receiving forgiveness. Tests to see if there is someone I need to forgive: Resentment test - Is there anyone you resent? Responsibility test - Do you find yourself thinking, "If only this other person or persons had done this, things would have been different!" and therefore blaming others? Reminder/reaction test - Do you find yourself reacting negatively against a person because they remind you of someone else? Investigating Jesus Part 39 Why did Jesus go to the cross?    A question often asked is what has Jesus’ death done for humanity? Our natural state – We are all sinners, separate from God (Romans 3:23). Forgiveness – God forgives our sins – (Ephesians 1:7). Reconciled us to God – We are no longer enemies of God (2 Corinthians 5:19). Peace – We have peace with God – (Romans 5:1). Justified us – Makes us just before God - (Romans 3:24-26). Cleanses from sin – (1 John 1:7). Makes us right before God (2 Corinthians 5:21). Freedom from the power of slavery to sin (Galatians 5:1). Gives us direct access to God (Ephesians 2:18). Freedom from the power of the devil – (Hebrews 2: 14). Gives us Christ’s intercession (Hebrews 2:17-18).   None of the above things apply to those who do not follow Jesus and are therefore not in an active, dynamic, personal and intimate relationship with Him. Are you following this Jesus yet and interacting with Him? “Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear. For your hands are stained with blood, your fingers with guilt. Your lips have spoken falsely, and your tongue mutters wicked things.” (Isaiah 59:1-3). The Problem Sin is what separates humans from God and consequently leads to both a spiritual and physical death (Isaiah 59:2; Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23,). In the Old Testament, sins were dealt with by blood sacrifices of atonement as coverings for sin (Leviticus 17:11), for without the shedding of blood there can be no remission of sin (Hebrews 9:22). A blood sacrifice is God's way of dealing with sin. These blood sacrifices of the Old Testament signified several things: It provided a covering for sin It showed the great cost of sin It was an exchange or substitution It was only always going to be a temporary measure, as it pointed forward to Jesus' death The Solution If that is the problem, what therefore is the solution and who can provide it? We see this solution clearly here: It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said: ‘Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me; with burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased. Then I said, “Here I am – it is written about me in the scroll - I have come to do your will, my God.”’ (Hebrews 10:4-7) The solution was not to be through the continual animal sacrifices, because as we see in Hebrews 10:7, the blood of animals simply cannot take away sin. This blood could only ever only be a veneer or mere covering. That was why it was necessary to repeat time and time again. However, there is a permanent solution. That permanent solution was achieved only through the death of Jesus. His death sees that sin can be completely taken away (Hebrews 9:11-15, 26-28. Our Response We are to respond to God with love. A love of which we need to willingly go to God to accept. It is a love which is always giving, always sacrificial and always present. “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.” (1 John 3:16). How have you responded to this love of Jesus Christ for you, if indeed you have? If you are a Christian Disciple, when was the last time you told somebody this good news of Jesus Christ and what sacrifices are you prepared to do for the sake of God’s Kingdom here on earth?   Click or Tap here to listen to or save this as an audio mp3 file ~ You can now purchase our Partakers books! In this sermon series we will explore the very difficult topic of forgiveness. This is one of those topics that is “always relevant” and applies to us all in a variety of ways. As we have surveyed people asking what topics they would like to hear a sermon series on, this was one of the topics that scored “high.” In our world there are many “misconceptions” about forgiveness. Is forgiveness merely to forget something that someone has done to you? Should every situation be forgiven? Can you forgive someone who does not want to be forgiven? Does God truly forgive us of “everything” we have done wrong? And how can we know for sure? Why should I worry about forgiving others, especially those who have intentionally hurt me? Why should God forgive me? Is there anything so “bad” that it cannot be forgiven? In this sermon series we will explore what it means to embody forgiveness, experience true forgiveness, and discover the power that comes from forgiveness.
