After 10 years, the filmmaker and author Alex R. Johnson returns to the podcast. Alex R. Johnson is a writer and filmmaker who lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. His feature film "Two Step" premiered to critical acclaim at SXSW in 2014 and went on to become a New York Times Critic's Pick. His screenplay "Northeast Kingdom" was selected for the 2016 Black List, and his screenplay "Any Rough Times Are Now Behind You" was selected by the Austin Film Society's Artist Intensive lab where he was mentored by late director Jonathan Demme. He also wrote the screenplay adaptation of Ernest Tidyman's novel, "Big Bucks", for Pascal Pictures/Sony Entertainment. Johnson's family hails from the Andes of Ecuador, where their 100-year-old dairy farm still operates. Fans of Richard Price, Charlie Huston, and Jonathan Lethem will love this coming-of-age New York-centric detective noir debut from esteemed filmmaker and screenwriter Alex R. Johnson. New York City, 1998. New York is changing around Nico Kelly, and he can feel more coming. A private investigator and self-proclaimed photographer, Nico is stuck in a loop of city contracts and self loathing. What little middle class there was is disappearing—long-standing factories are moving out and taking their reliable neighborhood jobs with them, and Mayor Rudy Giuliani's police force has the streets in a stranglehold.  Nico spends his days looking for fraudsters while taking photos of municipal employees on disability claims. He spends his nights trying to get rid of the nagging feeling that his day job makes him a professional snitch—traversing dive bars, playing pinball, and fighting through the haze of hungover mornings and blurry evenings.Pushing thirty years old and feeling split between his American and Latin heritage, between youth and adulthood, Nico finds himself at a precipice—who is he and what should he become? When Nico witnesses and records a murder during one of his insurance fraud investigations, bodies start to turn up all around him and he's forced into solving a mystery he didn't ask to solve. Humorous, gritty, and real, Nico's search for what it means to be human takes him through the deepest and darkest parts of New York City.

EPISODE 320: The Power of Chad returns to chat with Rey about the next chapter of MIDNIGHT SUN by Charlie Huston! Recapping issue #7 (as it was covered way back in ITK ep 151) both Chad and Rey also look into issue #8 to discuss Marc's progress from donning the white costume once again and hitting the streets as Moon Knight! SEGMENT: LUNAR-PICK MODERN RUN REVIEW Moon Knight Vol. 5 #8 'The Dead Don't Stay (Midnight Sun Part 2)'   Release Date March 14, 2007 Cover Date April, 2007   Writer(s) Charlie Huston Penciler(s) David Finch Inker(s) Danny Miki Crimelab Studios Colorist(s) Frank D'Armata Letterer(s) Joe Caramagna Editor(s) Daniel Ketchum Axel Alonso   BARE BONES (Written by Wiki):  Flashback: It is the early 1990s and mercenaries Marc Spector and William Cross are stationed on top the roof of a building. Marc aims a high-powered sniper rifle at a building across the street, just as military officials escort a prisoner across the quad. He executes a blond haired woman who apparently revealed highly classified state secrets. Cross indicates that she had been previously brainwashed, and that she only revealed information already programmed inside her mind. Executing her was done merely to make the Germans and the Russians nervous. The Present: Captain America stands in Marc Spector's mansion in his civilian attire. Addressing by his former rank of sergeant, he warns Spector to stay clear of events involving the current civil war. Spector's maid, Nedda, comes into the room and tells Cap how she grew up admiring him. Distracting Marc even further is Khonshu. Adopting the visage of the late mercenary Bushman, Khonshu urges Marc to kill Captain America. Fortunately, Marc has grown quite accustomed to ignoring Khonshu's violent demands. After Cap finishes speaking, Marc fires back, criticizing the war, comparing it to a sordid love affair between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark. He goes on to say that Steve that Tony are "trying to prove who has the bigger super power". Having settled very little, Cap repeats his warning and exits the mansion. Marc later goes out as Moon Knight. He meets up with Detective Flint who has been investigating a recent string of murders. The crimes have all the earmarks of the Midnight Man, but for the fact that the original Midnight Man died several years ago. Flint even disinterred Mogart's remains and tested his DNA just to be certain. Moon Knight tells Flint that he'll look into it. While on patrol, Moon Knight comes upon a hood attacking a young woman. He brutally dives into him, wrapping him up with a length of chain. Later, Marc returns home where he meets with his physical therapist. Elsewhere, the mysterious Midnight killer claims another victim. He cuts off their arms and legs and begins swinging them overtop his head in glee.   MOON RATING : Chad:

I’m looking for books that will give me that big-city feel, books based in NYC, or books on the history of NYC. Thanks for all you do! -Amanda   2. I love the reading rainbow for adults podcast ‘Levar Burton Reads.’ However, it has exposed a large hole In my reading experience. I’m hoping you can recommend a couple short story collections. I’d prefer audio versions as have I recently joined Libro.fm and need assistance spending credits. I have only tried Nick White’s collection Sweet and Low on my own but it wasn’t really my cup of tea. The stories that I have enjoyed the most from the show have been “The Paper Menagerie” by Ken Liu, “Childfinder” by Octavia Butler, and “Graham Greene” by Percival Everett. -Christy   3. Hi from Canada! I’m looking for a long, well-written saga in which I can lose myself. I enjoy well-formed and complex characters, and learning about something new whenever I read (history, other professions, unique life experiences etc.). A dose of magical realism or low fantasy is fun but not necessary. Favourite books include Cloud Atlas, The Secret History, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, The Golem and the Jinni, the Night Circus and Spinning Silver (as recommended by you!). I also like Barbara Kingsolver and Isabel Allende. I tend to find out about popular books quite easily so something off the beaten track would be great. Please no stories about parents losing kids or genocide/war violence. Thanks for doing this great podcast! -Mandy   4. Hi! I’m looking for some book recommendations to give to my husband as part of my first year anniversary gift (paper!). We are celebrating by going on vacation in early May, and we’re planning to spend some of our downtime just hanging out in a coffee shop reading. Unfortunately, he is not much of a reader. He enjoys reading, but doesn’t prioritize it as a hobby. Therefore, he hasn’t really spent time figuring out what he likes. Here’s what I do know: He’s read everything ever written by R.A. Salvatore. We also read the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher together, and really enjoyed that. He’s a gamer and enjoys a lot of the popular sci-fi/fantasy games and storylines (i.e. World of Warcraft, Witcher, Skyrim, Borderlands, etc. ). He’s told me that he enjoys action-y plots where the main characters emerge victorious that aren’t too dark/complicated. I think he would enjoy books by Brandon Sanderson, Brent Weeks, or the high fantasy series by Jim Butcher, Codex Alera. I do not think he would enjoy the Game of Thrones series, and I think even N.K. Jemison’s Broken Earth Trilogy would be a little too much. Regardless, I think all those books are too long for him to want to make a commitment to, especially on vacation. Any suggestions for high-fantasy books or series with shorter books that aren’t R.A. Salvatore? Bonus points if it’s a little more diverse than most of the list I’ve given here, but I’d rather it be something he’d really enjoy than diverse for the sake of diversity. Thank you!! -Megan   5. I would love to find one or two children’s books that focus on living in a nontraditional family (being raised by an aunt or other family member) to help during a period of transition for a resilient four year old and her cousins who she is now living with permanently. I’ve found books about adoption or living with grandparents but am struggling to find something that seems to speak to their situation. She loves being read to and I think this is a situation where seeing yourself in the story could really help! Thanks! -Heather   6. I’m a librarian and generally give advice/book recs! Now I need some advice. I’m looking for a quirky, literary leaning mystery. I have really enjoyed: Lisa Lutz’s Spellmans, peter heller’s Celine, Sara Gran’s Claire DeWit series, Gabriel Cohen and Charlie Huston. I do not like psychological thrillers or too much gore. I guess what I like is quirky and can have a touch of noir or humor. -Ann   7. Hi, I’ve been reading a bunch of Afro futurism from Nigerian or Nigerian – American authors. I find the culture and folklore it explores fascinating and I would love some memoirs or biographies so I could have a more grounded perspective and be able to have more context to the fantasy novels. The books I’ve read are all about woman in the Igbo tribe, but any Nigerian or West African would be good if Igbo is too specific. -Emily   Books Discussed The Recovering by Leslie Jamison Chesapeake Requiem by Earl Swift Open City by Teju Cole Saint Mazie by Jami Attenberg Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado How Long Til Black Future Month by NK Jemisin The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert The Queen of the Night by Alexander Chee The Bloodprint by Ausma Zehanat Khan Magic Bites (Kate Daniels #1) by Ilona Andrews Families Families Families! by Suzanne Lang and Max Lang Me, Toma, and the Concrete Garden by Andrew Larsen and Anne Villeneuve Girl Waits with Gun by Amy Stewart IQ by Joe Ide Looking for Transwonderland: Travels in Nigeria by Noo Saro-Wiwa There Was a Country by Chinua Achebe

The Immune System: A Dewey Decimal Novel & Love Maps  & The Luminous Heart of Jonah S. (Akashic Books)  Join us tonight for a special event brought to you by one of the most exciting independent presses in the country, Akashic Books. The Immune System is the explosive final installment in Nathan Larson's Dewey Decimal trilogy. Picking up months after the events of The Nervous System, Dewey finds himself running dirty operations for the crooked Senator Howard. When Dewey is tasked with disrupting unrest from a growing group of outcast civilians, and simultaneously given the assignment of protecting a pair of Saudi royals, he is forced to look within and make some impossible choices. Ultimately, this puts him at odds with his benefactor and the powers that be.  In the course of the novel, we learn the true nature of the 2/14 cataclysm that decimated New York City, and by the end of it, Dewey must choose whether or not to face his own past. He must also decide if he is to be part of the elite control system, or if he's willing to commit himself to the unknown, without the protections he enjoys in the good favor of the landlords of the new New Order. Praise for the Dewey Decimal Series: “The most incredible thing about Larson's novel is just how credible it is . . . and the prose is perfect, as tweaked and jumpy and memorable as the man known as Dewey Decimal. I'm a Library of Congress girl myself, but Larson's uncannily original fiction deserves its own number within any system of library classification.”—Laura Lippman, author of After I'm Gone “Larson's vividly imagined world and his quirky narrator are likely to win him a cadre of loyal fans.”—Publishers Weekly “Whiplash prose, teeth-gnashing dialogue and post-civilization concepts that make a crazy (amateur) librarian in a pitch-black world a hell of a lot of fun . . . A good time for fans of the likes of Charlie Huston and Charles Stross.”—Kirkus Reviews Nathan Larson is an award-winning film music composer, having created the scores for over thirty movies, including Boys Don't Cry, Dirty Pretty Things, and Margin Call. The Dewey Decimal System and The Nervous System are the highly acclaimed first two installments in his Dewey Decimal crime-fiction trilogy. Larson lives in Harlem, New York City, with his wife and son. --- The love in Love Maps is not the kind associated with domestic bliss; it is the kind that bubbles up at inopportune moments, attaching itself to people who might be better off free, causing mayhem and longing, along with moments of rare beauty. The title is taken from a series of paintings by Sarah Marker, an artist who ekes out a living teaching humanities at a fancy high school in Connecticut.  The story begins when Sarah receives a letter from Philip, her erstwhile husband. They have lived separately for seven years, without having seen each other once, without having formally severed ties, in a state of sustained ambivalence. Now he wants to visit. As much as Sarah would like to see him, she is terrified at what he will do when he discovers that he has a son.  Sarah bundles up her son and once again takes flight, only to arrive in a place she had not intended. While navigating the terrain of the 1980s art scene in New York City, she must confront the terrible events surrounding Philip's departure, and reconcile the expectations of domestic life with her own fractured experience of family, confronting the violence and aching love at the heart of this story. Praise for Love Maps: “Who can plot the turns and reversals of the heart? Who can follow its illogical loyalties and mysterious obsessions? Who can reconcile its competing claims from lovers and family? Eliza Factor, that's who, in this stunningly assured novel about a pair of sisters—one a successful artist, the other a famous singer—and the handsome architect who comes between them. The cover should come with a warning to put your life on hold for a few days, because once you pick it up, you won't be able to do anything else until you finish.”—Bliss Broyard, author of One Drop: My Father's Hidden Life—A Story of Race and Family Secrets “Eliza Factor's second novel is a beautiful and uplifting journey through the New York art scene of the 1980s, as lived by one true artist. You'll be hard-pressed to find a character more fully and honestly revealed across the pages of a book than Sarah Marker. A stunning and original exploration of family, romantic love, and the possibility of healing.”—Joseph Weisberg, creator/executive producer of The Americans (FX Network) “By turns lyrical and flinty, searching and suspenseful, Love Maps is animated by the strivings and travails of characters who seek (and find) the real and the true, the territory instead of the map.”—Thad Ziolkowski, author of Wichita “Eliza Factor's Love Maps is a delight, and I read it with mounting pleasure and admiration. It feels strange to think of Love Maps as a pleasure—this is, after all, a book that captures in technicolor detail the pain and vulnerability that come with just about every variety of human relationship. But prose this witty and psychologically deft, and structures this intricate and heartbreaking, don't come around often.”—Ben Dolnick, author of At the Bottom of Everything Eliza Factor is a writer and the founder of Extreme Kids & Crew. She lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her husband and three children. Her debut novel, The Mercury Fountain, was published in 2012 by Akashic Books. -- From Tehran to Los Angeles, The Luminous Heart of Jonah S. is a sweeping saga that tells the story of the Soleymans, an Iranian Jewish family tormented for decades by Raphael's Son, a crafty and unscrupulous financier who has futilely claimed to be an heir to the family's fortune. Forty years later in contemporary Los Angeles, Raphael's Son has nearly achieved his goal--until he suddenly disappears, presumed by many to have been murdered. The possible suspects are legion: his long-suffering wife; numerous members of the Soleyman clan exacting revenge; the scores of investors he bankrupted in a Ponzi scheme; or perhaps even his disgruntled bookkeeper and longtime confidant. Award-winning novelist Gina B. Nahai pulls back the curtain on a close-knit community that survived centuries of persecution in Iran before settling and thriving in the United States, but now finds itself divided to the core by one of its own members. By turns hilarious and affecting, The Luminous Heart of Jonah S. examines the eternal bonds of family and community, and the lasting scars of exile. Praise for The Luminous Heart of Jonah S. "A wide-ranging, page-turning, magical realist, multigenerational family saga and Iranian-Jewish-American immigration tale enveloped in a murder mystery...it both entertains and instructs, and its differing genres seem more complimentary than conflicting."--New York Journal of Books "Nahai has crafted an engaging combination of family saga and murder mystery, placed it in the framework of a relatively unknown subculture, and people it with fascinating characters. Flavored with both elements of magical realism and down-to-earth observations, The Luminous Heart of Jonah S. brings a little-known Los Angeles community to vivid life."--Shelf Awareness "What results is a novel that feels more universal than anything, and an engrossing, expansive epic that charts not only thousands years of Iranian Jewish life, but the brutality of one family's survival amidst revolution and cultural upheaval." --Kirkus Reviews "One of the many pleasures of this sprawling, multigenerational story is the way it transcends the specifics of the Iranian diaspora with insights that could apply to anyone."--LA Weekly "One of Nahai's gifts is her astute observation of this community, her own, which she describes with unsparing precision."--Los Angeles Review of Books "Nahai's eye for detail, whether it's succinctly summing up a funeral or providing a description of a Tehran summer, always seems to be spot on."--PopMatters "An intriguing murder-mystery journey anchored within the Iranian-Jewish community of Los Angeles. Vivid and raw...Nahai masterfully introduces us to the mythical and mundane layers that make up Iranian-American identity."--Washington Independent Review of Books "It's the family connections--the true Iranian heritage--that is the luminous heart of the novel."--The Reporter Group Gina B. Nahai is a best-selling author, columnist, and full-time lecturer at USC's Master of Professional Writing Program. Her novels have been translated into eighteen languages, and have been selected as “Best Books of the Year” by the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune. She has also been a finalist for the Orange Prize, the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, and the Harold U. Ribalow Prize, and has won the Los Angeles Arts Council Award, the Persian Heritage Foundation's Award, the Simon Rockower Award, and the Phi Kappa Phi Award. Her writing has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles magazine, Publishers Weekly, and the Huffington Post, among others. She writes a monthly column for the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles, and is a three-time finalist for an LA Press Club Award. Nahai holds a BA and a Masters degree in International Relations from UCLA, and a Master of Professional Writing from USC. Hey folks! This is our first podcast. Well, sort of. It's the first you'll get to hear but, true to it being recorded by two writers, it's not the first attempt at recording one. You'll still hear it's a bit rough around the edges, but we're proud of it. Here's the list of books we talked about this week:-Parker: The Hunter. Darwyn Cooke's adaptation of the Richard Stark classic.-Gun Monkeys. Victor Gischler-Big City, Bad Blood. Sean Chercover-Caught Stealing. Charlie Huston-The Lost Sister. Russel D McLean-Let It Ride. John McFetridge-When One Man Dies. Dave White-Grinder. Mike Knowles-Yellow Medicine. Anthony Neil Smith-The Devil's Staircase. Helen Fitzgerald.-Gutted. Tony Black.-The Last Place. Laura Lipman.-Judas Kiss. J.T.Ellison.-Beast Of Burden. Ray Banks.-Slammer. Allan Guthrie. We'll be back at work at future podcasts soon, playing around with the formula, smoothing out the gremlins, bringing in the other guys. If there's anything you want to hear, let us know.
