I'll be talking about Rapunzel's incredible agency, her journey from the tower to the floating lights, and how she takes charge of her own story—a big leap from traditional princess roles. I also delve into the music that makes Tangled so unforgettable, and how it creates meaning and emotion. Join me as we unravel how Tangled brought a fresh, inspiring twist to the Disney princess legacy'. Ying Qi

Sure, everyone has heard of Coppola and Scorsese and Spielberg. But those guys are two silent generations and a Boomer! What about those Gen X filmmakers that have really made an impact on Hollywood? It turns out that there were way more notable directors from our generation than I had originally expected. This is only part one.Part 1 covers those directors born between 1965 and 1969. You may recognize names like Michael Bay, Wes Anderson, Antoine Fuqua, James Gunn, Zack Snyder, and Denis Villeneuve. Billions of dollars in box office between them, with some more “artistic” projects in their filmographies as well. We can also get so caught up the “big name” directors, that it is forgotten how the Pixar films have been - up until very recently - very high quality films, regardless of being animated. So guys like Byron Howard and Andrew Stanton, who have made some of the best of the Pixar flicks, are not household names outside the hardcore animation fans. It should come as no surprise that the movies that have most resonated with me in recent years have been Gen X directed. What are some of your favorites?

Dave is taking a few weeks off (and we'll miss him), so we're taking on this week's movies as a duo. First, we review Jenna Cato Bass's GOOD MADAM (2:13), a South African horror film on Shudder that we find pretty confusing. But we do think it has some interesting commentary on race and class underneath. Then we cover Hannah Marks's DON'T MAKE ME GO (25:00) an uneven Amazon drama mired by strange narrative choices. However, it features yet another amazing performance by John Cho. And in this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we talk about Nathan Greno and Byron Howard's 2010 Disney animated film TANGLED, starring Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi!
After something of a hiatus: we're back! With the award-winning 2015 Colombian film EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT. After some reviews, we dive in with a reference to Rob's favourite theatrical director, as well as exploring why it's good that this film was made and how it might be important that some people don't get on board with it. Before we start season 2, we had to come on and talk about Bruno and the rest of the Family Madrigal! That's right, we're discussing Encanto. This film was written and directed by Charise Castro Smith, Jared Bush, and Byron Howard and stars Stephanie Beatriz, María Cecilia Botero, and John Leguizamo. Join us as we sing and discuss relatable family dynamics, magical realism, trauma, displacement, the true “villain”, and more of the amazing (and heavy) details in this film! (*Extra note: We realized afterwards that Coco has a multigenerational family as well - whoops! We were so excited that we forgot to mention that one!) In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing ENCANTO (2021), currently available on Disney+. With screenplay credits to Charise Castro Smith and Jared Bush, story credits to Jared Bush, Byron Howard, Charise Castro Smith, Jason Hand, Nancy Kruse and Lin-Manuel Miranda and directed by Jared Bush, Byron Howard and Charise Castro Smith (co-directing credit); The film follows the Madrigal family of Colombia who is preparing for an evening ceremony in which Young Antonio may manifest magical powers. Most of the Madrigals have a special gift; all except Abuela and Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz). Disney has done it again melding culture, fantastic songs, great voice acting and a story that is universal. The film has a run time of 1 h 42 m and is rated PG. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. This is my review of Encanto, which is a 2021 American computer-animated musical fantasy comedy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The 60th film produced by the studio, it is directed by Byron Howard and Jared Bush, co-directed by Charise Castro Smith, and produced by Clark Spencer and Yvett Merino, with original songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The film stars the voices of Stephanie Beatriz, John Leguizamo, María Cecilia Botero, Diane Guerrero, Jessica Darrow, Angie Cepeda, and Wilmer Valderrama. It's about the Madrigals, who are an extraordinary family that live hidden in the mountains of Colombia in a charmed place called the Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift -- every child except Mirabel. However, she soon may be the Madrigals last hope when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is now in danger. After all, love makes us vulnerable and forces us to bare our monsters to another.

Disney felt that the film's princess theme discouraged young boys from seeing it. In an attempt to market the film to a broader audience, Disney changed the title of the film from Rapunzel to Tangled, and promoted it as a comedic adventure. An early trailer for the film focused less on Princess Rapunzel and more on Flynn Rider, the male lead character. It was originally believed that Disney's marketing campaign was a desperate attempt to search for a particular audience. However, directors Byron Howard and Nathan Greno claimed that the title change was to emphasize that Flynn has as much of a role in the film as Rapunzel. The most expensive Disney film in the animated canon, at US$260 million. This is the first animated Disney "princess" film to get a PG rating by the MPAA. The previous Disney princess films up to that point were all rated G.The character design of Flynn came from the process called the "hot man meeting" by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, during which they set up a meeting with all of the female employees of the studio in one room and asked them for their opinions of what made a man good-looking, in order to create Flynn's character design with features such as eye color, hair color and style and body type. Video footage showed concept art and photos of various male celebrities, including Johnny Depp, Hugh Jackman, Brad Pitt, David Beckham and Gene Kelly, on the walls of the room. For the scene in which Rapunzel enters the marketplace, the animators were inspired by entrances of Walt Disney World and Disney Land. Rapunzel's excitement towards all the music and people is reminiscent of children at the parks.Zachary Levi auditioned for the part of Flynn Rider and got it, with an English accent. Later, this was dropped and Levi read the role in his own American accent instead.Over 45,000 lanterns are used during the "I See the Light" sequence.Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel both auditioned for the role of Rapunzel. Three years later, they both starred together in Frozen (2013) as Anna and Elsa.Pinocchio can be found in the Snuggly Duckling, right after the cupid is swung to the right of the screen. He is in the top right corner in the rafters. In addition, Pumbaa from The Lion King (1994) (visible in the same scene) and Louis from The Princess and the Frog (2009) (one of the puppets used later in the song) can also be found. It can be inferred that they are all involved in this scene due to them all having dreams (Pinocchio: real boy, Pumbaa: accepted despite bad gas, Louis: jazz musician).Segment: Miscellaneous “whosits and whatsits galore”Trivia !Tease Next Episode Feature Film: Treasure PlanetTop 4: TBDMusic Credit: OurMusicBox (Jay Man) Track Name: "Flights Of Fantasy" Music By: Jay Man @ https://ourmusicbox.com/ Official "OurMusicBox" YouTube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/c/ourmusicbox License for commercial use: Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) https://creativecommons.org/licenses/... Visuel © Zootopie, de Byron Howard et Rich Moore (2016) See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Philip and Jodi discuss the pivotal 50th film from Walt Disney Animation Studios, 'Tangled' (2010) directed by Byron Howard and Nathan Greno. This modern classic provides an update on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, "Rapunzel". Kidnapped at birth, the enchanted Princess Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) is locked in a tower while her hair's healing powers are used to keep the wicked Mother Gothel (Donna Murphy) young. Rapunzel's tower is discovered by thief Flynn Rider (Zachary Levi) and the two embark on an adventure to see the kingdom. In Disney Animation, story is king. For the film 'Zootopia,' seven creators worked to shape the story that began in the mind of Byron Howard. In the later portion of their five-year battle to bring the Zootopians to life, major plot changes occurred while they remained true to an idea of discussing prejudices frankly, through film. Thanks to the aid of the writer’s room and the guidance from Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter along with the infamous Story Trust, 'Zootopia' found its place among an ongoing list of Disney classics. In the following order, we spoke with co-director Byron Howard, producer Clark Spencer, and co-director Rich Moore about the pop culture references in the movie, the Disney collaboration model, and serious themes in animated films. In addition to this audio format, the print interview for this conversation is available on Creative Screenwriting Magazine’s website.
