This week, we pay tribute to one of the most devastating (and life-affirming) movies ever made. It's our very first Takahata film, and… it's a doozy. We simply couldn't do a Studio Ghibli series without honoring this masterpiece. **Please be aware that this episode includes some distressing themes around children and violence. We tried our best to celebrate the brilliance of the film but inevitably the conversation turned dark at times. Next week, we get a (much-needed) big, fuzzy hug from MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO (1988). Get in, losers, we're going to Laputa! This week we take flight with Pazu, Sheeta, and a gang of pirates with some seriously questionable motives to find the mythical land in the clouds where cool robots take care of birds (and shoot lasers). It's the first true Ghibli film, and, man, does it set the bar pretty high. Also... what the hell is going on with the English dub of this film? Next week, it's our very first Takahata film, GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES. Nadeem was feeling a little emo and wanted "...options for films that make you feel sad." Chat GPT thought this was a little strange, but still suggested the 1988 anime, "Grave Of The Fireflies" for the next movie review. Mita talks "Summer House" and Nadeem has no idea what she's talking about.
I'm not crying, you're crying! We go over one of the saddest things which we were all dreading watching, but don't worry, there's plenty to talk about aside from crushing brutal sadness, such as the interesting polymath who wrote the story and the extremely methodical guy who directed the film, and of course some Miyazaki too. And if you're wondering, you don't have to watch the film to listen if you can't handle it right now (and if you want, you can read the short story which we talk about too)Support us at our podcasting network, Podcastio Podcastius at https://www.patreon.com/podcastiopodcastius. In which the Mister and Monsters review GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES (1988), from the novel by Akiyuki Nosaka. In writer/director Isao Takahata's haunting 1988 Studio Ghibli masterpiece, a teenage boy named Seita and his younger sister, Setsuko, are left to fend for themselves in the final months of World War II after their home is destroyed by firebombing. To escape the cruelty of their surroundings and a strained relationship with a distant relative, the siblings move into an abandoned hillside bomb shelter, attempting to sustain their spirits through play and the flickering light of fireflies. However, their desperate attempt at self-sufficiency is soon threatened by the harsh realities of starvation and social indifference, testing Seita's resolve to protect his sister's remaining childhood innocence. The film clocks in at 1 h and 29 m, is unrated and is currently streaming on Netflix but also available to buy/rent on Prime Video. Joined by Brit from The Grindhouse Girls podcast, we delve into the haunting story of Saita and Setsuko—two children caught in the firebombing of Kobe during WWII.Together, we unpack why director Isao Takahata chose to focus on ordinary lives rather than battles or politics, and what the film's silence around Hiroshima and Nagasaki means for how we understand war. From personal childhood memories to the enduring relevance of this film in today's world, our conversation explores trauma, national pride, and the fragility of innocence in the rubble of conflict.Whether you're a lifelong anime fan or simply curious about what sets Grave of the Fireflies apart from typical war movies, join us as we illuminate the human cost of war, one firefly at a time, here on The Cinedicate. What to expect from the episode:A deep, empathetic exploration of Grave of the Fireflies as a non-traditional war film, focusing on the overlooked human cost of conflict—especially from a child's perspective—without relying on typical war movie tropes.Thoughtful discussion on the cultural context and historical trauma behind the film, including personal stories, the impact of national pride, and comparisons to current global crises like Gaza and Ukraine.Critical consideration of animation as a storytelling medium for traumatic real-life events, the film's enduring relevance, and a candid look at societal indifference toward suffering—past and present.Episode Chapters00:00:00 - Introduction to Grave of the Fireflies00:02:33 - Personal Connections to the Film00:05:24 - Childhood vs. Adult Perspectives00:08:00 - Historical Context: Firebombing of Kobe & Societal Collapse00:14:27 - Autobiographical Roots & Plot Overview00:16:01 - Pride, Nationalism, and Failure of Community00:20:40 - Innocence, Isolation, and Societal Neglect00:23:21 - Survivor Guilt & Fate of War Orphans00:26:04 - Modern Relevance: Children & War in Today's World00:28:24 - Japanese Cultural Trauma, Media, and Artistic Approach00:33:43 - Symbolism of Fireflies00:37:22 - Indifference, Privilege & Societal Response00:41:01 - Human Nature During Crisis: The Aunt & Others00:43:34 - Blame, Guilt, and Responsibility00:47:18 - Systemic Neglect & Societal Failure (Then & Now)00:50:44 - Atrocities, Indifference & Speaking Out00:58:23 - Parenting, Trauma, & Cycles of Harm01:03:28 - The Ending: Legacy, Memory & Haunting Presence01:04:57 - Animation vs. Live Action: Medium for Trauma01:09:33 - Contemporary Reception & Wokeness01:15:05 - Animation's Storytelling Power/Pop-Culture Tangents01:15:45 - Recommendations and Educational Value01:20:23 - Closing Tangents01:27:28 - Final Thoughts & Outro----------Listen to Brit on her podcast, The Grindhouse Girls.----------The Cinedicate on InstagramThe Cinedicate's Discord Community Hosted on Acast. Grave of the Fireflies (1988)Movie 120 on Metacritic's all time movie list. This week, we review Grave of the Fireflies (1988), Isao Takahata's devastating war-time animated drama from Studio Ghibli. Tsutomu Tatsumi and Ayano Shiraishi voice Seita and Setsuko, two siblings struggling to survive in the aftermath of the firebombing of Kobe during World War II. With harrowing scenes of loss, resilience, and the collapse of innocence, this film raises haunting questions about the human cost of war and the fragility of childhood. The devastating impact of war through the eyes of children creates one of cinema's most profound animated experiences, standing as Studio Ghibli's most sobering and realistic work.• Grave of the Fireflies (1988) is directed by Isao Takahata, co-founder of Studio Ghibli• The film follows 14-year-old Seita and his younger sister Setsuko as they struggle to survive after losing their mother in WWII Japan• Originally released as a double feature with My Neighbor Totoro, creating a stark contrast in tone and subject matter• Based on a semi-autobiographical short story where the author survived but lost his sister to malnutrition• Currently holds 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and is widely considered one of the greatest war films ever made• Recently became available on Netflix after decades of limited accessibility• The complex portrayal of Seita's character sparks debates about responsibility versus impossible circumstancesLetterbox'd Synopsis: In the final months of World War II, 14-year-old Seita and his sister Setsuko are orphaned when their mother is killed during an air raid in Kobe, Japan. After a falling out with their aunt, they move into an abandoned bomb shelter. With no surviving relatives and their emergency rations depleted, Seita and Setsuko struggle to survive.
Seems like it was just last year when I was a teenager trying to get my hands on any anime I could watch back in the mid-1990s. I remember finally getting my hands on the famed Grave of the Fireflies, a film focusing on two siblings caught near the end of World War II.

C'mon of course you did. YOU WOULDN'T MAKE US DO THIS WITHOUT YOU RIGHT!?) This week we are closing it out with the iconic, Grave of the Fireflies. It's got war. It's got famine. It's got more tears than your high school glee club's semi-district-regional competition! GET IN HERE AND LET US CRY AT YOU.A devastating meditation on the human cost of war, this animated tale follows Seita (Tsutomu Tatsumi), a teenager charged with the care of his younger sister, Setsuko (Ayano Shiraishi), after an American firebombing during World War II separates the two children from their parents. Their tale of survival is as heartbreaking as it is true to life. The siblings rely completely on each other and struggle against all odds to stay together and stay alive.
We discuss the 1988 anime classic, Grave of the Fireflies. It tells the story of a young boy and his little sister as they struggle to survive in Japan during World War II. Aside from some early levity regarding the name of the streaming service, "Crunchyroll," this is a heavy conversation and a bleak movie. Topics aside from war include malnutrition, pride and homelessness. The saddest movie Chris has ever seen concludes season 2. Spoil My Movie has a phone number! Call us at (646) 926-0529. We Finaly get to go to Excalibur Academy and in the end it is nothing but disappointment. The story was lacking, character development was left to be desired and you were given a ton of questions and not real answers. In all we feel that the show left much to be desired. Next week's choice is Grave Of The Fireflies. Have you seen next week's choice or one of the previous ones? Let us know what you thought of it or recommend what we should watch next! Join us this week as we dive into an assortment of random movies we've forced each other to watch! Movies include The Ring, Monos, Grave of the Fireflies, Local Hero, and The Rage in Placid Lake. Enjoy!
Two Dudes are joined by cartoonist Madeline Horwath to discuss Studio Ghibli's seminal classic, Grave of the Fireflies (1988). Directed by Isao Takahata and released the same year as My Neighbor Totoro, this film strikes a markedly more somber note as it follows two siblings orphaned during WWII. Considered by many to be one of (if not) the greatest animated films of all time, this devastating meditation on the human cost of war is a must-see. We'd advise you to put down that 4th hot dog and join us on a reflective journey, where Puji, Rachel, and Marbles talk through the one of the saddest films they have ever watched, Grave of the Fireflies, by Studio Ghibli. An animated tale, that follows siblings, Seita and Setsuko after an American firebombing during World War II that separates them from their parents. Their tale of survival is as heartbreaking as it is true to life. The siblings rely completely on each other and struggle against all odds to stay together and stay alive. For our second billing for 'Ani-May', Paul decided to have Sophie experience and review the not-so happy Studio Ghibli movie in their catalogue, Grave of the Fireflies. We also talk about comparisons to tragedies in Disney films, if at any point we were bawling our eyes out, and why this was paired with My Neighbor Totoro as a double feature! ------------------------------------------------------- Don't forget to follow us on social media in the links below, and let us know your thoughts and recommendations for the future! instagram.com/sp_filmviewers twitter.com/SP_Filmviewers letterboxd.com/SP_Filmviewers Rating and reviewing the show is a great help too! Today we're talking about 1988's Grave of the Fireflies, a film that has been on Samuel's watchlist longer than any other. We discuss the incredibly depressing and sad nature of the film, ponder the choices of the main character and how it compares to the real-life story, and wonder why ice cream flavors sometimes have terrible names. Also, why we hate Apple's filing system. (Recorded April 2nd, 2023.)
Well, WoHos!When we originally chose the animated films for this show, I had remembered GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES as much more horrific and MAD GOD as much more...something? That didn't stop us from talking about each film a lot, though!!We also talk Letterboxd reviews, an Eric Winick review, what our personal ratings mean as well as the dismaying state of affairs in this country for trans people, disappointing home improvement projects, why Mac isn't doing commissions right now, and how much Mom truly loves Rian Johnson.I also included an extra bit of Mom & Mac chat at the end of the show for those listeners-til-the-end WoHos wherein I tell the tale of trying to see the original SCREAM in the theater with...baby Mac! How did that go? You'll have to listen until the end to find out!Next time we will be looking at "Animals Run Amok" when we look at THE BIRDS from the US and BLACK SHEEP from New Zealand. On the next Quinnisode, Quinn and I will be discussing Hitchcock's ROPE, which I have never seen. Thanks for all your support. Please tell all your friends about us.We Love You! Quinn was kind enough this week to join me for a ramble on one of my favorite films, THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE (1962).From IMDb: An American POW in the Korean War is brainwashed as an unwitting assassin for an international Communist conspiracy.Does it all fit together? Not at all, but I do so love it so! Between the insane fight scene and the insane train scene, we are flummoxed, bewildered, enchanted, and sold on this Cold War thriller. Thanks a lot to filmsite.org for the plot synopsis.Coming up on the regular show, Mac & I will be discussing animated horror films, We will be looking at MAD GOD from the US and GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES from Japan. on this episode, I'll continue my journey up the list of the top 52 movies of all time, according to IMBD, with my review of the animated film, Grave of the Fireflies.

In this episode, James and Sean completely change gears, discussing the 1988 Japanese animated Studio Ghibli film Grave of the Fireflies, which tells the story of a young boy and his little sister who struggle to stay alive during the Allied firebombings of Japan that occurred in the last few months of the war. Grave of the Fireflies is a sad, hard-to-watch movie, but it is a must see for those who want to know what life was like for Japanese civilians in the final stages of World War II.
