Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!! This week we are starting a new "Anime Bucketlist" theme where I watch some of the most well regarded animated films of all time. This week we are diving into the extremely sad Grave of the Fireflies (1988).Equal parts beautiful and crushing, this movie was an experience I will never forget, even if right after watching it, I wanted to. I gave this film a 9/10 for its gorgeous imagery and heartwarming story, as well as its existential importance and its reflection on life and death. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/

WE DID IT. Summer of animation is coming to a close and dear listener I would like to thank YOU most of all for putting in the TIME and EFFORT to watch all of these movies with us (I know you did. C'mon of course you did. YOU WOULDN'T MAKE US DO THIS WITHOUT YOU RIGHT!?) This week we are closing it out with the iconic, Grave of the Fireflies. It's got war. It's got famine. It's got more tears than your high school glee club's semi-district-regional competition! GET IN HERE AND LET US CRY AT YOU.A devastating meditation on the human cost of war, this animated tale follows Seita (Tsutomu Tatsumi), a teenager charged with the care of his younger sister, Setsuko (Ayano Shiraishi), after an American firebombing during World War II separates the two children from their parents. Their tale of survival is as heartbreaking as it is true to life. The siblings rely completely on each other and struggle against all odds to stay together and stay alive.
We discuss the 1988 anime classic, Grave of the Fireflies. It tells the story of a young boy and his little sister as they struggle to survive in Japan during World War II. Aside from some early levity regarding the name of the streaming service, "Crunchyroll," this is a heavy conversation and a bleak movie. Topics aside from war include malnutrition, pride and homelessness. The saddest movie Chris has ever seen concludes season 2. Spoil My Movie has a phone number! Call us at (646) 926-0529. Grave of the Fireflies is a 1988 dramatic anime set during the events of World War Two Japan. In this episode we brought on our special guest Tyler who is fluent in Japanese culture and language. This film is available in Japanese and two seperate English dubs. Setsuko a young girl and her older brother Saiti find themselves parentless after a US bomber drops incendiary bombs on their city of Kobe. After briefly staying with their aunt, they are unable to cope with the set forth rules, and decide to go out on their own. A film set apart from others at the time does not sugar coat the realities of war.The film is directed by Isao Takahata and written by Akiyuki Nosaka and Isao Takahata which is based on his short story. Starring Tsutomu Tatsumi, Ayano Shiraishi, and Akemi Yamaghuchi.
We Finaly get to go to Excalibur Academy and in the end it is nothing but disappointment. The story was lacking, character development was left to be desired and you were given a ton of questions and not real answers. In all we feel that the show left much to be desired. Prepare yourself for a sad one. Studio Ghibli went and attacked our very hearts with this bawler of a film. Greenie and Faceless do their best to hold back the tears and you won't wanna miss their thoughts on this one.
Two Dudes are joined by cartoonist Madeline Horwath to discuss Studio Ghibli's seminal classic, Grave of the Fireflies (1988). Directed by Isao Takahata and released the same year as My Neighbor Totoro, this film strikes a markedly more somber note as it follows two siblings orphaned during WWII. Considered by many to be one of (if not) the greatest animated films of all time, this devastating meditation on the human cost of war is a must-see. We'd advise you to put down that 4th hot dog and join us on a reflective journey, where Puji, Rachel, and Marbles talk through the one of the saddest films they have ever watched, Grave of the Fireflies, by Studio Ghibli. An animated tale, that follows siblings, Seita and Setsuko after an American firebombing during World War II that separates them from their parents. Their tale of survival is as heartbreaking as it is true to life. The siblings rely completely on each other and struggle against all odds to stay together and stay alive. We are back to our regular type of show. We come in hot with another studio Ghibli film (Slowly making our way through it). This was suggested to us by our guest on this episode, Jessica Bertrand. Jessica is an author who has made several contributions to the devotional Finding God in Anime volumes 1 and 2. Grave of the fireflies handles some pretty heavy topics and we encourage anyone to watch who is an anime or history buff.
Join hosts Brad Garoon and Jake Ziegler on a cinematic journey through time as they explore movies that have slipped through their watchlists. In this episode of "Never Did It," Brad and Jake delve into the year 1988, discussing two highly impactful films: "The Thin Blue Line" and "Grave of the Fireflies." "The Thin Blue Line," a gripping documentary directed by Errol Morris, revolutionized the genre with its investigative approach. Jake assigns this thought-provoking film to Jake, who experiences the meticulous unraveling of a murder case in which truth becomes elusive. As they explore the blurred lines between justice and truth, the hosts dissect the film's impact on documentary storytelling and its cultural significance. Next, Brad takes the reins and introduces Jake to "Grave of the Fireflies," a profoundly moving Japanese animated film directed by Isao Takahata. Set during World War II, the movie follows the heartbreaking journey of two siblings as they struggle to survive in a war-torn Japan. As they delve into the emotional depth and poignant storytelling of this animated masterpiece, the hosts discuss its lasting impact on the medium and its exploration of the human spirit in times of adversity. Throughout the episode, Brad and Jake share their perspectives and delve into the themes, techniques, and historical context of these remarkable films. They provide insights into the directors' visions, the films' reception upon release, and their enduring legacies in the cinematic landscape.

Tonight we have not only a Japanese production but also our first animated movie. Since "Grave of the Fireflies" appeared in the late '80s, it has steadily garnered a following in the West, notably led by its biggest advocate, Roger Ebert. Seita, 14, must care for his 4-year-old sister Setsuko, after their home is destroyed and their mother killed in the firebombings of 1945. Regarded as one of the saddest movies ever made, this one really tests World War II Movie Night's mission to be a fun podcast, but we manage... Asides include a mini book club, the more unfortunate examples of dubbed movies, and war as a balm for the restlessness of youth.
Today we're talking about 1988's Grave of the Fireflies, a film that has been on Samuel's watchlist longer than any other. We discuss the incredibly depressing and sad nature of the film, ponder the choices of the main character and how it compares to the real-life story, and wonder why ice cream flavors sometimes have terrible names. Also, why we hate Apple's filing system. (Recorded April 2nd, 2023.)
Well, WoHos!When we originally chose the animated films for this show, I had remembered GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES as much more horrific and MAD GOD as much more...something? That didn't stop us from talking about each film a lot, though!!We also talk Letterboxd reviews, an Eric Winick review, what our personal ratings mean as well as the dismaying state of affairs in this country for trans people, disappointing home improvement projects, why Mac isn't doing commissions right now, and how much Mom truly loves Rian Johnson.I also included an extra bit of Mom & Mac chat at the end of the show for those listeners-til-the-end WoHos wherein I tell the tale of trying to see the original SCREAM in the theater with...baby Mac! How did that go? You'll have to listen until the end to find out!Next time we will be looking at "Animals Run Amok" when we look at THE BIRDS from the US and BLACK SHEEP from New Zealand. On the next Quinnisode, Quinn and I will be discussing Hitchcock's ROPE, which I have never seen. Thanks for all your support. Please tell all your friends about us.We Love You! Skeptik decided to take us all on a feel trip this week with our first dive into the world of animated films, Grave of the Fireflies. Directed by Isao Takahata in 1988, this is a harrowing Studio Ghibli film about the horrors of war. Told through the perspectives of a child, Setsuko, and her older brother, Seita, we follow the pair as they struggle to survive a war-torn Japan during WWII and maintain a semblance of happiness within the brief pockets of peace they experience. Fair warning, this is a really heavy episode, but that doesn't mean we can't recommend watching it before listening. It's a very important film that just so happens to be one of the darkest movies we've ever discussed on this show. Chris is joined by Chloe and Sam Howard to discuss the 3rd entry in the Going through Ghibli series, Grave of the Fireflies, as we conclude the second month of 2023. Grave of the Fireflies marks a very different approach from the animation studio that focuses on delivering a powerful message through the eyes of children during the last days of WWII. Needless to say, the group was easily able to find a lot to break down as they try to make it through this episode without tearing up.
The best movie I'll never see again!Today we're talking about Isao Takahata's Grave of the Fireflies. Is this movie completely missing the message it tried to tell, or is this movie telling a story that's rarely told?Who convinced you? One of the saddest movies we've ever covered- perfect for JB's birthday! In the waning days of World War II, two siblings, Seita and Setsuko, are orphaned and struggle to survive. Melissa offers a specifically spicy take on the film, and it devolves into a discussion about creeping fascism globally and in the United States. This is all about humanity and how we treat each other, which is generally badly. Next week we're back with Creed, which is far more fun! In this episode, James and Sean completely change gears, discussing the 1988 Japanese animated Studio Ghibli film Grave of the Fireflies, which tells the story of a young boy and his little sister who struggle to stay alive during the Allied firebombings of Japan that occurred in the last few months of the war. Grave of the Fireflies is a sad, hard-to-watch movie, but it is a must see for those who want to know what life was like for Japanese civilians in the final stages of World War II.
