The film writer David Jamell Moses joins the show for a discussion about a great nineties film that has been flying under the radar for too long, Boaz Yakin's debut feature Fresh (1994) starring Giancarlo Esposito, Samuel L. Jackson and a 13 year old actor named Sean Nelson making his film debut, in one of the greatest screen acting performances by a child. Nelson plays Michael (aka Fresh), a quiet 12-year-old boy who runs drugs for rival gangsters in New York City, including one kingpin who has addicted his sister to heroin and considers young Fresh to be his heir apparent. When Fresh witnesses an act of horrifying gun violence, he takes inspiration from his estranged alcoholic father, a speed-chess master, and applies the principles of the game of chess to carry out a complex strategy to eliminate the gangsters and save himself and his sister from their fates. Fresh isn't as well-remembered as other urban crime dramas of the 1990s  but David and I love it, and on this episode we go deep on the film's many virtues; some may be surprised to learn this film was made by a white director but Yakin hardly takes a wrong or phony step to tell this Black story, which functions as a thriller and a tragedy, with magnificent performances and a devastating conclusion. Remember the Titans: A Triumph of Unity, Resilience, and the Power of SportsA true story that may not be as true as it appears to be but is still a cracking sports movie and social commentary!"Remember the Titans" is a powerful sports drama directed by Boaz Yakin that tells the inspiring true story of a high school football team's journey toward racial integration in the early 1970s. With stellar performances, a heartfelt script, and masterful direction, the film leaves an indelible mark on viewers, showcasing the immense power of unity and resilience in the face of adversity.Set in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1971, the story follows the newly appointed African-American head coach, Herman Boone (Denzel Washington), as he faces the monumental task of leading the T.C. Williams High School Titans, a racially diverse team, through the process of integration. As tensions rise within the team and the community, Coach Boone and his assistant coach, Bill Yoast (Will Patton), strive to unite the players, challenging them to overcome their differences and work together to achieve greatness on and off the field. At its core, "Remember the Titans" explores themes of racial discrimination, equality, leadership, friendship, and perseverance. The film examines the destructive impact of prejudice and highlights the transformative power of empathy, understanding, and teamwork. It reminds us that change begins when individuals rise above their differences and unite in pursuit of a common goal.Denzel Washington's portrayal of Coach Herman Boone is nothing short of exceptional. With his commanding presence and unwavering determination, Washington captivates the audience, embodying the strength and resilience required to navigate through the tumultuous times. Will Patton delivers a nuanced performance as Coach Yoast, portraying a man torn between loyalty and the pursuit of justice. The supporting cast, including the young actors portraying the Titans football team, delivers standout performances. Each character represents a unique perspective and experience, and their emotional journeys are portrayed with authenticity and depth. From the charismatic team captain, Julius Campbell (Wood Harris), to the spirited and courageous quarterback, Ronnie "Sunshine" Bass (Kip Pardue), every actor brings their character to life, allowing the audience to connect with them on a personal level.Boaz Yakin's direction is both sensitive and evocative, capturing the essence of the era while weaving together a powerful narrative. His ability to balance the emotional intensity of the story with moments of humor and levity is commendable. Yakin skillfully guides the audience through the intricacies of the racial tensions, highlighting the transformative impact of the football team's unity on the broader community."Remember the Titans" expertly blends the personal stories of the players and their struggle for acceptance with the larger societal context of racial integration. The screenplay, written by Gregory Allen Howard, is a testament to the power of storytelling. It weaves together moments of triumph, heartache, and self-discovery, taking viewers on an emotional rollercoaster ride. The film's cinematography beautifully captures the essence of Alexandria, with its sweeping shots of the town and intimate close-ups of the characters. The football sequences are particularly well-executed, immersing the audience in the intensity and physicality of the sport. The use of slow-motion and dynamic camera angles enhances the dramatic impact of the games, making them exhilarating to watch. The film's soundtrack, featuring a mix of Motown classics and powerful anthems, perfectly complements the emotional beats of the story. From Marvin Gaye's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" to The Temptations' "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," the music enhances the film's emotional resonance, immersing the audience in the era and further heightening the emotional impact of key moments. Since its release in 2000, "Remember the Titans" has achieved iconic status, resonating with audiences around the world. Its powerful message of unity and racial harmony remains as relevant as ever. The film serves as a reminder of the progress made in the fight against discrimination while highlighting the work that still needs to be done."Remember the Titans" not only entertains but also educates, offering valuable lessons about empathy, compassion, and the importance of embracing diversity. Our final Disney film is 1998's MULAN. After some reviews, we talk about the ways in which this film starts from a position of naivety, but grows into a much more adult movie: which leaves us both intrigued as to what the reboot will be like. Next Up Next time, for the last time, we turn to the live-action version of a Disney animation, with the 2020 MULAN. We have for you on the show today screenwriter and director, Boaz Yakin, The writer behind The Punisher, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, The Rookie, & Safe and directing, The Fresh, Remember the Titans and the comedy-drama, Uptown Girl among others.Growing up in a talented theatrical family, it was only natural for Yakin to pursue a life in film or some sort of performing arts. His dad, who was a teacher at Juilliard and a theater director enrolled Boaz into the famous Stell Adler script analysis class when he was only 17 years old. Thereafter, he tried out film school at US City college, later transferred to NYU, before quitting school after his first script was auctioned and got him in the door at 19 years old.At age 22, Yakin wrote his first produced film, Marvel's The Punisher. When Frank Castle's family is murdered by criminals, he wages war on crime as a vigilante assassin known only as The Punisher. In 1990, Yakin co-wrote one of the action films of the times, The Rookie, starring star boy Charlie Sheen, and Clint Eastwood who also directed the film. But his big hit came right after, FRESH, Yakin’s directorial debut is an emotional coming of age story, that offers a realistic glimpse of the dangerous life in New York City's projects during the crack epidemic.Michael, nicknamed Fresh, a 12-year-old kid running drugs for gangsters, notably Esteban, inspired by the chess lessons of his father, an alcoholic speed-chess master played by Samuel L. Jackson. Fresh devises and executes a brilliant plan to extricate himself and his drug-addicted sister from their hopeless lives.Next up for Boaz was directing the box-office smash REMEMBER THE TITANS.Academy Award® winner Denzel Washington shines in REMEMBER THE TITANS. Based on real events, this remarkable story celebrates how a town torn apart by friction and mistrust comes together in triumphant harmony. After leading his team to fifteen winning seasons, beloved football coach Bill Yoast (Will Patton) is demoted and replaced by tough, opinionated Herman Boone (Washington). How these two men overcome their differences and turn a group of hostile young men into champions is a remarkable portrait of courage and perseverance. You and your family will never forget the Titans! His blockbuster smash, Now You See Me featured big industry names like Morgan Freeman, Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Michael Caine, etc. The $75 million budget film grossed $351.7 dollars. The plot follows an FBI agent and an Interpol detective who track and attempt to bring to justice a team of magicians who pull off bank heists and robberies during their performances and reward their audiences with the money.Boaz continued his blockbuster ways by working on the $200 million tentpole film Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, starring Jake Gyllenhaal.A young fugitive Prince and Princess must stop a villain who unknowingly threatens to destroy the world with a special dagger that enables the magic sand inside to reverse time.Boaz and I chatted about his creative process, the business side and political side of screenwriting and directing in Hollywood during this conversation. He was extremely raw and honest about what it really is like working inside the Hollywood machine.Enjoy this conversation with Boaz Yakin.

Boaz Yakin has been a director of solid studio and indie fare since his crossover hit "A Price Above Rubies", starring Renee Zelweger in 1998. With such mainstream successes as "Remember The Titans" and "Max" to his credit, it was a bit of a surprise reading the synopsis of his latest feature "Aviva", which was announced as part of the lineup for this year's SXSW. It was said to track "the evolution of a relationship driven by dance sequences... and a pair of principal characters played by four different actors." Available now on VOD, "Aviva" feels like something completely new and exciting, an experimental film that is nonetheless completely accessible. We got to talk with Boaz about the making of this fascinating film, including the collaboration with choreographer/co-star Bobbi Jene Smith, how he came up with the concept of externalizing each character's masculine and feminine sides, and shooting guerilla-style on the streets of France. Screenwriter Boaz Yakin has helped create films such as 'The Rookie,' 'Prince of Persia,' and 'Safe,' along with franchise films like 'Now You See Me' and 'Max.' These movies allowed for him to pursue passion projects as a screenwriter. In his latest film, 'Boarding School,' he’s developed a horror-inspired hero’s journey for adolescents. “Those are writing jobs where you’re like one of twenty writers on any one of those movies. Maybe you contributed enough to have a screen credit, but none of those things that I have tried to make or been more personally [involved with] like 'Fresh,' 'A Price Above Rubies,' or 'Death in Love,'” said the screenwriter. “These are movies I wrote and directed that came from me.” The writer-director would prefer to only make independent films, but the balance between projects allow for him to get the smaller films on the big screen. “In order to pay the bills—in order to pay for these movies—I’ve had to make more commercial movies and write things like that and put money back into these things..." On this installment, we return to one of our very first reviews by looking at its 2016 sequel Now You See Me 2, directed by John M. Chu.  The film picks up a year after the Four Horsemen's introduction to the world, where they lay in hiding and await further instruction from 'The Eye'; the mysterious secret society they had previously been inducted into. After finally being prompted to orchestrate another public spectacle, the show is hijacked by a hacker who exposes the Horsemen and blackmails them into stealing a secret surveillance device. But as the Horsemen work to turn the tables on their new adversary, the intrigue and subterfuge builds toward a grand revelation that changes everything.   We discuss the sequel in comparison to the first film, reiterating the storyline and common threads relating to secret societies and the mystery school tradition. We look at the arts of stagecraft and sleight of hand, and how these tools are used to create mystery and spectacle in the real world. The Four Horsemen clearly personify the mass media complex, where sensationalism and trivial revelation are used to distract the audience from something else.  We look at the multi-layered understandings within the story, and how both the Horsemen and the audience are taken through a ritual process of role-play, revelation, and initiation; whilst the greater truth remains obscured in darkness. We also touch on concepts like surveillance and secret societies, questioning as to what message the film is trying to send about these two controversial topics.  Given that the film was clearly created by a group of initiates, what perception do they want us to have about secret societies and their role in society? Topics discussed include: Magic, Mystery, Heist, Illusion, Deception, Secret Society, Symbolism, The Eye, Four Horsemen, Apocalypse, Revelation, Jesse Eisenberg, Morgan Freeman, Mark Ruffalo, Surveillance, Social Media, Sleight of Hand, Alchemy, Daniel Radcliffe, Michael Caine, Tarot, The Fool, Houdini, Rhodes, Atlas, Stagecraft, Initiation, Celebrity, Uri Geller, Cold War, CIA, Mi6, Paranormal, Counterintelligence, Attention, Logic, Suggestion, Publicity, Multi-Layered Understandings, Perception, Ego, Fame, Role-Play, Freemasonry, Disney, National Treasure, Benevolence, Ed Solomon, Boaz Yakin, Symbolic Language.

Hosts Allen Christian and Steven Granger put on their skull shirts, because somebody here has to, and dive into the gritty world of 1989's The Punisher, starring Dolph Lundgren. With a baffling distribution model, this movie never saw the dark of a theater in the US, but has still managed to be noteworthy enough as to be unavoidable in our run. Heralded as boring and cliche, this odd Dolph Lundgren vehicle is surprisingly entertaining. Cliche and true to many genre tropes of 80's exploitation cinema, it still manages to make good use of its violence. And somewhere under everyone except Louis Gossett, Jr.'s bad acting, Boaz Yakin seems to have written a solid script. Email: fourcolorfilm@gmail.comTwitter: @fourcolorfilmFacebook: facebook.com/fourcolorfilmWebsite: fourcolorfilm.com

"The closer you look, the less you'll see." The magicians reiterated this magic sentence in director Louis Leterrier's caper thriller, "Now You See Me." The magicians' audiences are warned of the performers' prowess, but still miss the critical movement every time. So is the same with Chinese moviegoers in front of the big screen. While the director tries desperately to convince audiences that magic shows are important because they make people happy, the majority of Chinese audiences are preoccupied with the logic of the story and its many loopholes. Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher and Dave Franco play four street magicians summoned by an anonymous person to prepare and perform a series of special magic shows. These involve robbing a bank, cheating a billionaire sponsor of all his fortune and removing all cash from a heavily guarded safe company. Morgan Freeman is an ex-magician who now seeks to expose their tricks. Mark Ruffalo and Melanie Laurent represent the authorities who are hot on their tails. Two of the "Four Horsemen," Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson, are able to leave an impression with their on-screen performances; the rest are mostly obliterated by the running storyline. Still, viewers are allowed to feast their eyes on spectacular magic shows, one after another. However, if you examine the story more closely, the second half of the movie is not as compelling as one would imagine based on its grand opening. While the magicians are being pursued by police, when they do get the time to perform, the shows are accomplished under menacing circumstances and the viewers can hardly enjoy the glamour of the illusion like they did in the opening scene. It just seems the director has shifted his hitherto pious attention on the magic tricks to the prolonged chase, which leads to nowhere. Despite the incoherent focus, the script by Ed Solomon, Boaz Yakin and Edward Ricourt still shows great promise. The secret of each show is revealed right after the presentation, yet the audience is still intrigued, with anticipation for more. Meanwhile, they are keeping their eyes sharp and exercising their brains, hoping to uncover how the characters pull off each trick. Compared to other movies currently available in Chinese cinemas, "Now You See Me" is much more attractive and its audience much more willing to engage. On a scale from one to ten, "Now You See Me" deserves a six.
