This week Rich Bradbury and Matt Armitage look at a University of Tubingen study that explores the relationship between AI, information and trust, especially in anticipation of the conversational and primarily screen free future of the Internet. After the break they start with medical tech where researchers have identified a bacterium that could accelerate the healing of wounds, especially for those with chronic conditions. And then, for some reason, discuss the effect of streetlights on leaves before looking at the fossil record of the Siberian unicorn, an ancient relative of the rhinoceros. They wrap things up in no discernible order with the emergence of "Miami English," a new dialect blending English and Spanish, and the discovery of a "zombie galaxy" that may have cannibalized its neighbours to resume star formation after a 20-million-year dormant period.

John Zahl recently said that God seems to be interested not so much in preventing our suffering as in redeeming us from it. (I might add, through it, even.) My long friendship with the theologian Jurgen Moltmann, who died June 3rd at the age of 98, began with a somewhat dramatic "happening" that lines up with JAZ's statement. This new cast describes what happened. When I went to Tubingen in early 1992 to begin doctoral studies in theology there -- with the warmest sacrificial encouragement of Mary, our three sons being "in tow" -- I got there only to find out that the actual man with whom I had hoped to study was pretty cool about the whole thing. He was perfectly nice, but it turned out his English was not up to his own standard. So he was (moderately) happy to help overseas students who came from other universities but was reluctant to take on a foreign student "full time" on his own ground. He was just cool -- in temperament, I mean. I did not know where I stood. In any event, Herr Moltmann observed this; and one day, during a kind of barbecue in his garden, when he saw that I was wrung dry from studying Hebrew durch Deutsch and was also receiving little encouragement from the other Great Man, he piped up and said this: "Paul" -- addressing yours truly by his first name was a wonder in itself within that setting at that time --"Paul, I like you. He won't help you. Forget about him. I will take you on, and yes, it will be about Justification!" Herr Moltmann added the last sentence because he knew that I was not "about" his own celebrated specialty, the Theology of Liberation. He knew that I was really not "about" any _of his principal interests. But that didn't seem to matter. Apparently _I mattered. Jurgen -- as he wanted me to call him forever and ever, amen -- never stopped helping me. And helping Mary, and helping John, and helping David, and helping Simeon. In fact, we made it! Our whole family made it. Herr Moltmann (Jurgen!) was the subject of Glenda's "Run to Me", and I was the object. One is beyond thankful. Forever. p.s. Episode 182 Conquerors Not Captives with Joey Dodson Dr. Joey Dodson is a good friend and a former student of mine. He was traveling through Houston and I grabbed him, forced him to each lunch, and asked him to be a part of this podcast. Who Is Joey Dodson? Joey Dodson is the Craig L. Blomberg Chair of New Testament at Denver Seminary.  He married his first-grade sweetheart . . . seriously.  They have five children, two grandchildren and one grandchild on the way. Dodson attended Ouachita Baptist University, and then came to Houston where he studied under David Capes at Houston Baptist University. He then moved overseas to do his PhD at the University of Aberdeen with Simon Gathercole and Francis Watson.  From there he studied at the University of Tubingen. After his PhD Dodson taught for a time at Houston Baptist University.  Later at Ouachita Baptist University.  For the last five years he and his family have made their home in Denver where Joey learned the secret to contentment: move to Colorado.  He loves hiking and the outdoors. Conquerors Not Captives Conquerors Not Captives: Reframing Romans 7 for the Christian Life (Lexham, 2024) is Joey Dodson's latest book. He co-wrote it with his daughter, Mattie Mae Motl.  It's part of a series by Lexham Press whose goal is to take what is standard in the academy to the church. His basic argument is that we must read Romans 7 in context, thus as part of Romans 6-8.  It must not be read in isolation. Nor should it be read over against our experience.  It's Exegesis not Narci-gesis.  Accordingly, the “I” of Romans 7 is not the normative Christian Life. Johannes Kepler, Thinking God's Thoughts After Him

The BreakPoint Podcast

November marks the death of Johannes Kepler, one of the most important figures of the Scientific Revolution and a scientist who was motivated by his Christian beliefs. The significance of Kepler's work can only be understood in light of what he faced and risked. The settled science of his day was that the Earth stood at the center of the universe. To challenge that meant to challenge the entire, accepted understanding of physics.   When Copernicus published On the Revolution of the Heavenly Spheres in 1543, he argued that the universe was centered on the sun rather than Earth. His motivation was to preserve the idea that planets traveled at a constant velocity in perfect circles. In other words, his motivation was more philosophical and aesthetic than it was scientific. Few scientists accepted these ideas that contradicted settled science. As a result, there were only a handful of committed Copernicans prior to 1600. Johannes Kepler was one of them.   Kepler was a devout Lutheran who planned to become a pastor. However, he excelled at mathematics and had an interest in astronomy. In seminary at the University of Tubingen, he became convinced by Copernicus and defended him on both scientific and theological grounds. After graduating in 1594, he took up teaching mathematics at the Protestant school at Graz (now the University of Graz) in Austria.  While in Graz, Kepler began to develop a theory about the number of planets and the relative size of their orbits. He found that his theory worked for all planets except Jupiter. Though he adjusted the theory to make it work, he was convinced the problem would be solved with better observations. As it turned out, the best observational astronomer in the world, Tycho Brahe, lived nearby.   In 1600, Kepler negotiated with Tycho for access to his data. Tycho recognized Kepler's genius and eventually agreed to work together. However, a year later, Tycho unexpectedly died. Kepler was appointed his successor as imperial mathematician, which enabled him to continue compiling and analyzing data on planetary motion in order to develop a more accurate model of the universe.  Tycho's observations were as good as was possible with the naked eye, and Kepler was determined to use them. Initially, he could not find a formula, whether geocentric or heliocentric, that would work.   Heliocentrism was close, but not up to the known margin of error of Tycho's observation. This led Kepler to give up on circles and try ellipses, which fit better, but not perfectly. After playing with some very complicated math, Kepler arrived at a solution that, in the end, proved Copernicus right about the Earth going around the sun. In the process, Kepler discovered his Three Laws of Planetary Motion which stand even to today.  Kepler's work was motivated by his Christian faith. He believed that since God is rational, the universe must be as well. Because humans are made in God's image, we can, as he said, “think God's thoughts after Him.” In other words, understanding the universe is possible.  This commitment led Kepler to be a rigid empiricist. Because God had given him Tycho's data, he was responsible to use it as fully as he could. For example, the earth's orbit is less than .02% away from being a perfect circle. Even that small amount made Kepler willing to jettison the supposed perfection of circular motion favored by the scientists of his day.  Though most others would have chalked that up to observational error, Kepler knew the margin of error of Tycho's observations and believed God expected him to honor the quality of the data, rather than conform it to his preconceptions about how it “should” be.  Kepler knew his theories would be rejected by scientists, but he didn't care. It had taken eons before anyone discovered how God had structured the universe, so Kepler figured he could wait another century or so to be proven right. His faith in the intelligibility of the universe was grounded in his belief that the world was governed by divine reason, the Logos. This led him to examine the world systematically, to not take shortcuts, to use what God gave him and, in the end, to lay the foundations for modern astronomy and physics.  This Breakpoint was co-authored by Dr. Glenn Sunshine. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Dr. Dominik Nischwitz. He is a world-renowned specialist in biological dentistry, holistic odontology, and ceramic implants.  He is the current Vice-president of the ISMI (International Society for Metal-Free Implantology), whose mission is to help as many people as possible to experience optimum oral health without the use of metal-based treatments.  As an international speaker, he regularly shares his expertise onstage in order to establish biological dentistry as the new frontier in the industry and covers this very topic in his recent bestselling book, It's All In Your Mouth, published by Chelsea Green.  With his father, Dr. Nischwitz cofounded DNA Health and Aesthetics Center for Biological Dentistry in Tubingen, Germany in 2015. Dr. Nischwitz has exclusively used ceramic implants since 2013, placing more than 5000 to date. A pioneer in the field of holistic dentistry, Dr. Nischwitz regularly gives lectures around the world.  Aside from biological dentistry and oral health in general, his other passions include functional medicine, holistic nutrition, and competitive sports.  He trains traditional dentists in biological dentistry and believes all health starts in the mouth. In this episode, Dr. Dominik speaks about the dangers of amalgam fillings and why people still use this toxic material to fill cavities in their mouths. Whenever you drink, bite, chew, or brush your teeth, the mercury will leak from those amalgam fillings causing significant health damage. Dr. Dominik explains the importance of removing these amalgam fillings to restore your health. [06:05] The Dangers of Amalgam Fillings and This Highly Toxic Dental Practice  Amalgam fillings contain 50% mercury. Mercury is the most toxic non-radioactive element known to man. Is it worth putting amalgam fillings in your mouth? No! Amalgam fillings last forever. When you drill it out of your mouth, a special company needs to dispose of it because it is highly toxic waste material. Many countries have banned amalgam fillings for decades.  [12:20] Will Amalgam Fillings Cause Mercury Poisoning?  There is tons of research about amalgam fillings and mercury poisoning.  Mercury leaches out of amalgam fillings when they are in your mouth. The mercury will come out when you bite, drink hot beverages, and brush your teeth.  The mercury vapor will go through all cells in your body.  Your body will get rid of the mercury when the cell dies.  The half-life of mercury in your tissue is about sixteen to thirty-two years.  [26:00] What You Need To Know About FDOJ (Cavitation) You cannot diagnose cavitation on a two-dimensional x-ray.  “Cavitation” is the term for a medical condition known as NICO or FDOJ, which can develop after tooth removals.  FDOJ is fatty degenerative osteonecrosis and osteolysis of the jawbone.  Many people develop problems after tooth removals because they don't know how to heal properly.  [35:55] Dr. Dominik Helps Patients From All Over The World Dr. Dominik had to develop a remote system to assist patients from all over the world. You need to send a current panoramic x-ray to his office.  Dr. Dominik has examined about 40 specialists worldwide for experts in biologic dentistry and ceramic implants.  He wants the procedures to be as minimally invasive as possible.  Dr. Dominik has placed over 5,000 ceramic implants. Here's the website: https://www.dr-dome.de [42:15] Mouth-Body Connection: The Meridian Tooth Chart Every tooth has a specific connection via the autonomic nervous system to organs in your body. The wisdom tooth area is connected to the small intestine.  A lot of people have SIBO after getting their wisdom teeth removed.  Removing cavitations can help with health symptoms like SIBO, IBS, and eczema.  [50:15] Brushing Your Teeth Too Hard Is Doing Damage In Your Mouth  You want to gently rub when you brush your teeth. Your teeth health is more about lifestyle and nutrition, not necessarily how well you are brushing your teeth.  Dr. Dominik highly recommends using an electric toothbrush.  He also cleans his teeth with a towel; it doesn't matter! [54:05] Getting Root Canals and Cavitations Removed From Your Mouth If you start eating a keto diet, you will have an entirely new set of bacteria in three days. However, you will have dysbiosis if you have a mouth full of root canals, metals, and cavitations.  Getting your root canals out and removing cavitations can drastically improve your health and decrease mold in your mouth.   Follow Dr. Dominik on Instagram for more tips: https://www.instagram.com/drdome1/. This manuscript was found in Damascus and was moved to Germany.  It looks a lot like the upper layer of the Sana manuscript.  There are three reasons why this manuscript is 8th century and not 7th century: 1. The dots , the circles ,and the verse markings suggests that the text is a later text.  2. .  The page layout and illuminations parallels the 8th century manuscripts.  3.  The ornamentations suggests Abd Al Malik and Al Hajjag new distinctive Islamic Arabic manuscripts.  The question is if this text came from Mecca and Medina, what was happening there? Scholars agree that in the 7th century those two cities where very isolated and insignificant.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tune in as we discuss the dangers of cavitations, the mouth-body connection, and the mistakes you could be making regarding dental hygiene.  7 Day Keto Challenge Recordings Available at Discounted Price Here: https://kka.mykajabi.com/keto-challenge-oct-2022 Message me on Instagram www.instagram.com/thebenazadi with the word ENERGY to learn more about coaching from me. / / E P I S O D E   S P ON S O R S  Paleo Valley beef sticks, apple cider vinegar complex, organ meat complex & more. “It's a strange odyssey being a rare disease parent. It sort of forces you to question everything about life,” says Philippe Pakter, whose daughter Lysiane was born with Pierre Robin Sequence, a condition that impedes normal breathing and feeding. In this compelling interview with Shiv Gaglani, he shares the wrenching details of his family's daunting emotional, medical and legal journey. “It's tough, but you just have to keep going and from the hardship can potentially come very beautiful things.” Among the brighter spots of their story are finding a non-surgical treatment that helped with part of Lysiane's condition, and connecting with a network of dedicated clinicians focused on improving treatments for Pierre Robin Sequence. (Pakter recently interviewed one of those doctors, Stanford's HyeRan Choo, about non-surgical approaches. Listen here.) Don't miss this opportunity to hear hard won wisdom about ways clinicians can approach their work to be mindful of rare diseases and how they can be a resource for patients and families who are often desperate for answers.  Pakter is a great example of how well-informed rare disease family members are, and why clinicians should listen closely to what they have to say.

George Marsden characterized Christian fundamentalism as "militantly anti-modernist protestant evangelicalism". Right there you see that fundamentalism is a reaction against something. And that something is modernist theology. Modernism is a broad term used to describe a few different schools of liberal theology. In this episode, we discuss the Tubingen and Berlin schools. Modernist theology is often marked by the desire to discuss the "historic Jesus". This term can be a bit confusing because it is less about understanding what historic texts say about Jesus and more about discussing the non-miraculous aspects of Jesus' life and ministry. Our special guest this episode is Chris Evans, professor of Christian History and Methodist Studies at Boston University and author of "Do Everything" a biography of Francis Willard. Discussion Questions: What does it mean that fundamentalism is a reaction to modernist theology? What is modernist theology? Do you know any theologically liberal people? Do you find it difficult to both love the Lord and love your neighbor? What makes someone a Christian? Does your view include theologically conservative people? What about theologically liberal people? Where is the line for you? How vital are Jesus' miracles to your life and faith? Is there a tension in Christianity where it is culturally difficult to be theologically conservative and still want to love our neighbors? Vacinação contra a Covid-19 completa um ano, mas acesso a imunizantes é desigual

Reportagem

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 8, 2021 11:05

But how, many centuries after their demise, did they come to give their name to an important architectural style in medieval Europe and, in the 20th century, to a subculture popular all over the world? Andy and Dave discuss the latest in AI news, including research from the San Diego School of Medicine, which used an AI algorithm to analyze terabytes of gene expression data in response to viral infections, identifying 20 genes that predict the severity of a patient's response (across many different viruses). Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks announces a new AI and Data Acceleration initiative, which includes operational data teams and flyaway technical experts. China says it has AI fighter jet pilots that can beat human pilots in simulated dogfights. A study from Stanford estimates the density of CCTV cameras in large cities around the globe (by using computer vision algorithms on street view image data). NIST held a workshop on AI Measurement and Evaluation, with an interesting 22-page read-ahead document. Appen updates its State of AI and Machine Learning report, examining various business-related views and metrics on AI, showing a general maturing of the AI market. Researchers from Tubingen and Max Planck show that the behavioral difference between human and machine vision is narrowing, but still has room for improvement (particularly with out-of-distribution data). Researchers from Stanford, University of College London, and MIT develop a counterfactual simulation model to provide quantitative predictions on how people think about causation, possibly serving as a bridge between psychology and AI. Adam Wagner uses a reinforcement learning approach to search for examples that would disprove conjectures in graph theory and finds examples that disprove five such conjectures.  Cardiovascular exercise (CV), and other such classifications of fitness endeavors, has extensive research to support the American College of Sports Medicine’s broad definition as “exercise medicine.” Current, established activity guidelines include recommending a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise, or 75 minutes of high-intensity weekly exercise to maintain or improve cardiorespiratory fitness and health, while reducing the risk to non-communicable diseases – type 2 diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, stroke, and more. The nomenclature of CV exercise has specific variations, such as endurance exercise, in the form of moderate-intensity, continuous training (MICT), and high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) - referenced as high-intensity interval training (HIIT), and sprint interval training (SIT). HIIT involves alternating intervals at greater than 80% of maximum endurance capacity (VO2 Max) or 85% of your maximal heart rate (220-age), typically 1 to 4 minutes in duration – with lower intensity, active or passive recovery, while SIT uses short – full go – intervals, typically less than 30 seconds, with short, passive recovery.Writing in the March 2021 issue of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise – Effectiveness of HIIE versus MICT in Improving Cardiometabolic Risk Factors in Health and Disease: a Meta-Analysis - researchers from the Sports Medicine Department, Clinical Epidemiology and Applied Biometrics Department, and the Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy Department, University Hospital of Tubingen in Germany, used a meta-analysis (many similar studies) to investigate the clinical benefits distinguishing each exercise modality (HIIE and MICT) in health and disease. The data search began in January of 2018 and culminated in July of 2020.The seven key clinical endpoints of the literature analysis included: “physical fitness (VO2 max), endothelial function (flow-mediated dilation [FMD]), body composition (body mass index [BMI], body mass, and body fat), blood pressure (systolic and diastolic blood pressure), blood lipids (HDL, LDL, triglycerides, and total cholesterol), inflammation (C-reactive protein [CRP]), and insulin and glucose metabolism (fasting glucose, fasting insulin, glycated hemoglobin [HbA1c], and insulin resistance (HOMA-IR).”After a comprehensive analysis of the data, the researchers said, “overall, HIIE showed to be more effective in improving cardiovascular health and cardio- respiratory fitness, whereas MICT was superior in improving long-term glucose metabolism.”From an aging perspective, the data analysis determined that relative to endothelial function, which protects tissues from toxic substances, regulates the blood clotting mechanism, controls the transition of fluid and certain substances between the blood and tissues, and inflammatory control in tissues - it was determined that the HIIE had higher effects than did the MICT – the result of the “interval-like” exercise training programs inducing a, “higher shear stress, and promoting an increased nitric oxide release.” The Germans recommended that, “in the process of personalized training counseling, health-enhancing effects of exercise training may be improved by considering the individual risk profiles.”And, that risk stratification needs to start with your personal physician. Central government only undertakes tasks or makes decisions which localities cannot or which require uniform regulation. The gravitational pull of power to the centre is one of the things designers of the German constitution had in mind at the end of the Second World War. Germany had a certain fundamental and rather paradoxical advantage the UK lacks - they were defeated, along with Japan, and so their institutions were largely dissolved and reinvented in such a way as to avoid the accretion of power at the centre. This is a version of this week's topic - Subsidiarity - and we look at the German model in depth, and why it has been so successful.Talking points:Historic backdrop of SubsidiarityWe need to reinvent local democracyExecutive mayor in Tubingen and the pandemicHow that looks in other countriesTrust in government and optimal population (+/- 5 Million)Advantages of principle of subsidiarityHazards of disempowermentUniform regulation and local implementation in GermanyAshby's Law of Requisite Variety and subsidiarity...and child protectionRegional power, policy experimentation and learningLinks:Good 2 min overview of Subsidiarity (youtube):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GD0moAiq22kTroves of info on Wikipedia:Subsidiarity in general:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subsidiarity...and the Catholic Church:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subsidiarity_(Catholicism)Pope Pius XI's Quadragesimo anno:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quadragesimo_annoGreat conversation on Local Government in the UK (youtube, 10 min):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RO8c1Iy1VWESuccesses in the fight against Covid - (Panorama/ BBC iplayer):https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000thry/panorama-covid-who-got-it-right(Story about Tubingen 42:00 minutes in)A new kind of democracy in Yorkshire (article):https://www.shaping-community.co.ukIn depth archive on German law:https://germanlawarchive.iuscomp.org/?p=380...and a top-line view on Wikipedia:https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_government_in_Germany Hosted on Acast. If the European Union were a country, it would have the second-largest GDP in the world, ahead of China and just behind the United States. But it has consistently struggled to leverage its economic heft into geopolitical clout, at times due to internal divisions among member states over strategic priorities, but also because of their reluctance to relinquish control over sensitive questions of foreign and defense policy to Brussels. The debate over whether the EU should embrace a global role, how it can do so and what role it should play if it does has taken on greater urgency in the context of an international landscape increasingly characterized by strategic competition, particularly between the U.S. and China, but also on Europe’s periphery—in Ukraine, the Caucasus, Northern Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean.   In today’s big picture Trend Lines interview, Dr. Nathalie Tocci joins WPR editor-in-chief Judah Grunstein to discuss Europe’s role in an increasingly multipolar world. Dr. Tocci is the director of the Rome-based Institute of International Affairs and an honorary professor at the University of Tubingen in Germany. She is special adviser to the EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell. While serving in the same role under Borrell’s predecessor, Federica Mogherini, Dr. Tocci wrote the EU Global Strategy and worked on its implementation. Mary Kennedy meets former president and author Mary McAleese. “Mary McAleese - President of Ireland from 1997 to 2011, the first person from Northern Ireland to hold that role. She is a barrister and academic lawyer qualified in both civil law and Catholic Church canon law. She was the first female Pro-Vice Chancellor of the Queen’s University Belfast and is currently Professor of Children, Religion and Law at the University of Glasgow. She is Chancellor of Trinity College, Dublin where she held her first academic post as Reid Professor. She was born into a Catholic family in North Belfast’s Ardoyne in 1951. Northern Ireland, to quote David Trimble its one time Ulster Unionist First Minister, was then “a cold house for Catholics”. The eldest of nine children, Mary’s family experienced first-hand the political and sectarian violence which dragged on for decades destroying lives, relationships and hopes. Her response to the challenge of such a bitterly divided society was to become deeply involved in promoting anti-sectarianism, reconciliation and inter-religious dialogue. She was co-author of a seminal report on the Churches’ response to sectarianism which was jointly commissioned by the Catholic Church and the Irish Council of Churches (which represents the main Protestant Churches). The theme of her Presidency was Building Bridges and throughout her fourteen years in office she worked to heal the fractured politico/sectarian relationships on the island of Ireland and between Ireland and Britain. Her ambition was to replace a culture of deep distrust with one of good neighbourliness especially extending the hand of friendship to the hard to reach Loyalist communities. In 2011 she invited and hosted HM Queen Elizabeth II on the first state visit to the Irish Republic by a British monarch. After leaving office in 2011 she spent the following three years living in Rome and studying at the Pontifical Gregorian University where she obtained a licentiate and doctorate in canon law. In 2019 she was awarded the Alfons Auer Award in Ethics of the Catholic Faculty of Theology at the University of Tubingen. In 2020 she received the Woman of Courage Award of UNANIMA International at a ceremony in the United Nations HQ, New York.”

However, I would say the game has changed a little bit, and today we have the topics of Brexit, regulations and ensuring we satisfy customers with all the latest technology and everything that encompasses.” Alluding to the significant investment levels the company has undertaken, Markus says: “Investment in buildings, people, machines and technology is always ongoing. For example, we always try and keep our trainees up to the most recent level of training and qualification and for the machines; we have bought around 55 machines for our grinding department. We have invested a lot more in other types of machines also. The technology investment also includes the coating department where we have a new coating machine. We are also trying to invest in new locations like the US, where we planning to expand massively in the next four years. In March, we invested in a facility in the Czech Republic where we are also growing. Our aim is always focus on growth.” “Also, we are investing a lot in Tubingen. We have just completed some more buildings and we have the largest building in Tubingen, which is used purely for production. This is plant number 2. We have already started plans for the next expansion.” When asked how technology is at the heart of the company’s plans? Markus says: “The heart of the company and its technology all started back with my grandfather who was very technical, and my father Lothar Horn also. So, the technology is something t hat drives and we are looking for people that support the same values and the same feeling for the customer. Our staff love the technology and they always want to help the customer through the application of technology. We are often asked to help our customers. For example, we have the carbide milling and you can mow machine carbide, which is far more cost effective than grinding. This is the technology we are bringing forward, so our customers can benefit.” When asked what the next 5-10 years will bring? Markus said: “So, much can happen and right now we are in such an uncertain political and technical situation. We have the questions of the combustion engine versus the electric engine. We also have the alternative energy sector that is growing as well as the political situation with Brexit. So, there are lots of tension in the market and you cannot exactly say how it will go. But, our key values of having the best products for our customers with the best processes and being able to deliver this around the world are extremely important for us.” Looking more toward the shorter term future, Markus was asked what will be new for the EMO show. He concluded: “Right before our technology days event, we introduced some new products to the press – I cannot tell everything, but we have a lot of new products. We have a list of around 40 products that we have to chose from, with regards to which are the best ones for our customers and I can only say – come and visit us at the EMO Show, it will be great!”

The Goths were a Germanic tribe infamous for their brief sack of Rome in 410 AD, but their cultural and political influence was felt throughout Europe for centuries. They re-shaped the Balkans, preserved the Roman way of life in Italy, and presided over a cultural flourishing in Spain. But how, many centuries after their demise, did they come to give their name to an important architectural style in medieval Europe and, in the 20th century, to a subculture popular all over the world? Bridget Kendall talks all things Gothic with David Gwynn, historian at Royal Holloway, University of London, and author of Goths, the Lost Civilisation. Also on the panel are Janina Ramirez, a cultural historian, broadcaster and author who focuses on the Middle Ages, based at the University of Oxford, and Mischa Meier, professor of ancient history at the University of Tubingen in Germany. Like most of Germany. From the bridge over the river you can see a tower, painted yellow now, where the poet Hölderlin went crazy for 36 years: a long, slow burn that might, in other circumstances, be called life. This is where he wrote these words, which I found quoted by Paul Auster in The Invention of Solitude: The lines of life are as various as roads or asThe limits of the mountains are, and what we areDown here, in harmonies, in recompense,In peace for ever, a god will finish there. Ultrasound mapping of lymph node and subcutaneous metastases in patients with cutaneous melanoma: Results of a prospective multicenter study

Background: Ultrasound (sonography, B-mode sonography, ultrasonography) examination improves the sensitivity in more than 25% compared to the clinical palpation, especially after surgery on the regional lymph node area. Objective: To evaluate the distribution of metastases during follow-up in the draining lymph node areas from the scar of primary to regional lymph nodes ( head and neck, supraclavicular, axilla, infraclavicular, groin) in patients with cutaneous melanoma with or without sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) or former elective or consecutive complete lymph node dissection in case of positive sentinel lymph node (CLND). Methods: Prospective multicenter study of the Departments of Dermatology of the Universities of Homburg/Saar, Tubingen and Munich (Germany) in which the distribution of lymph node and subcutaneous metastases were mapped from the scar of primary to the lymphatic drainage region in 53 melanoma patients ( 23 women, 30 men; median age: 64 years; median tumor thickness: 1.99 mm) with known primary, visible lymph nodes or subcutaneous metastases proven by ultrasound and histopathology during the follow-up. Results: Especially in the axilla, infraclavicular region and groin the metastases were not limited to the anatomic lymph node regions. In 5 patients (9.4%) ( 4 of them were in stage IV) lymph node metastases were not located in the corresponding lymph node area. 32 patients without former SLNB had a time range between melanoma excision and lymph node metastases of 31 months ( median), 21 patients with SLNB had 18 months ( p < 0.005). In 11 patients with positive SLNB the time range was 17 months, in 10 patients with negative SLNB 21 months ( p < 0.005); in 32 patients with CLND the time range was 31 m< 0.005). In thinner melanomas lymph node metastases occurred later ( p < 0.05). Conclusions: After surgery of cutaneous melanoma, SLNB and CLND the lymphatic drainage can show significant changes which should be considered in clinical and ultrasound follow-up examinations. Especially for high-risk melanoma patients follow-up examinations should be performed at intervals of 3 months in the first years. Patients at stage IV should be examined in all regional lymph node areas clinically and by ultrasound. Copyright (c) 2006 S. Karger AG, Basel.
