Want to know where I go when I'm feeling down? I go spend time with four-year-olds! They are the friendliest and most authentic people I know. I find myself showered with compliments, questions, and requests to be best friends. Where along the road do we lose the openness and authenticity we had as little girls? As women business owners, we often get so focused on our own success that we are afraid to connect with and compliment other women we see doing well. It is my firm belief that when women collaborate and connect with each other, we can do more than we can do on our own! In this episode, I'm sharing what four-year-olds teach us about connection and how to shift our mindset about our interactions with other women business owners. This is an important message in our world so focused on competition, so be sure to tune in! It's no secret that running a business can be scary. You grow a business, put yourself out there, and depend on other people. It can be overwhelming at times and feel impossible to run your business without fear. Now, I don't like the term fearless. In fact, I don't think that we can be fearless. It's a very real emotion and there is no denying that. However, running our business out of fear can seriously derail us. It can stop us from running our business in alignment with our core mission, vision, and values. I've seen my share of struggles with my businesses in the last couple of years. I know how easy it is to let fear drive your decisions in your business and I've had to take a step back and reevaluate. As business owners, it's our responsibility to set the mission, vision, and values of our organization and hold people accountable, and you can't do that from a place of fear. Your quality and standards will suffer and you'll compromise the integrity of your business. Tune in to learn more about how to let go of that fear and start bravely leading your business! We've all heard that comparison is the thief of joy, but lately, I've realized how true that really is. All the time I hear women talking about how they should be doing something because they see someone else doing it, and believe me, I fall into this trap too. I get it. Why do we think that doing something we don't want to do is somehow going to make us feel happier or more successful? This episode is a replay of the most popular episode of 2024 from the Leading Lady podcast. It is about rejecting comparison and instead celebrating all of our unique qualities and successes. Just because one woman experienced success in something, doesn't mean you have to do it too. You can be happy for her and move on, and that doesn't make you a failure. I'm sharing some of my own experiences with comparison as well as some tips to help you stop comparing yourself to others and start living as your authentic self. Topics covered in this episode include: How social media keeps you stuck in the comparison trap The negative effects of constant comparison Reconnecting with what you really want for yourself If you often feel like you're behind everyone else, you're not good enough, or you should be doing more, you need to hear this! In this episode of Leading Lady, I want to share my experience with my daughter who went through sorority recruitment, or rush, as a freshman in college. People feel pretty passionately about sororities. Some feel it's archaic and toxic, some think it's a wonderful experience and really appreciate the community and the opportunities that being in a sorority presents. My experience with this whole process was a bit of a culture shock, to be honest. However, it's important to remember that everyone's experience is unique to them. There is no right or wrong blanket statement when it comes to sororities. My daughter and I both learned a lot from this experience. One of the biggest takeaways from this is that no one likes rejection, but it is a very real part of life. As much as rejection hurts, we have to recognize that it's not our place to determine if we are the right fit for someone else. We should instead focus on looking for situations where we are wanted, celebrated, and accepted. Tune in to learn more about our experience with the sorority recruitment process and what we learned from rejection. Do you feel like you are a leading lady? In this episode, I sat down with Sabrina Mapp, and we dug into authenticity, discovering our strength, and showing up as the leading lady that we want to be. Sabrina is a nerdy, introverted, idealist. A late Gen X-er and maybe a bit of a late bloomer, she is currently living her life backward. Her new favorite quote is “If you think adventure is dangerous, try routine – it's lethal”. – Paulo Coelho Sabrina has worked in Web Development at several prestigious companies including IBM, National Geographic, and most recently Georgetown University Law Center. She started her company, Astrid Digital, in January 2020, just in time for the pandemic to hit. Astrid Digital specializes in social media strategy and marketing for small to medium businesses. Since mid-2020, Sabrina has been training for a career in voiceover acting and recently launched a new website for her voiceover career, Sabrina Mapp, Voiceover. She is sharing her story, energy, and vibrance in this episode to inspire and challenge you to take the reins on your own life and truly become a strong leading lady. Personal brand photography is vital to success, but taking portraits can feel overwhelming and intimidating. Don't you agree? I am not someone who likes to be photographed, but my guest today, Maureen Porto, has a way of making me feel comfortable and confident while she photographs me. Maureen Porto is an award-winning portrait photographer specializing in business portraits and personal branding photography. Her Annapolis, Maryland studio serves clients from all over the DC Metropolitan area, and she travels from coast to coast. She joined me to talk about the importance of personal branding and using photography as a way to help female entrepreneurs stand out and elevate their brands. I have been working with Maureen for quite some time, and I am constantly in awe of how she can capture the beauty, power, and legacy of women in business. If you know that you should get photos taken but are nervous, listen to this episode. Maureen will help you find the confidence you need. You don't have to upend your life to make animal and environmentally-friendly choices. Topics like climate change and deforestation can be really overwhelming to think about. After all, how much of a difference can one person really make? The truth is, we need everyone's effort. Taking steps to be more environmentally friendly will make an impact. Every small action adds up to big changes. In this episode of the Leading Lady podcast, Crystal DiMiceli joined me to talk about how we can make a difference in our environment even with the tiniest of changes. Crystal was that little girl who loved animals and brought home strays whenever her parents would allow it (that may still be her M.O.!). She was that teenager who watched a show about pollution and vowed to stop it when she grew up. But, she's also that woman that loves to travel to far-off places on fossil fuel-guzzling airplanes while wearing leather shoes. She may not be the perfect example of how to do eco- and animal-friendly 100% “right”, but she makes every effort possible. She does her research, makes conscious choices, and listens to both sides of the aisle. She wants to bring attention to the good things that are happening so that we can elevate and scale up these acts so that they, ideally, become the norm. She understands that nothing is black and white, there are many shades of grey. Although, she prefers to say many shades of green. You don't have to be perfect to be environmentally conscious. It all starts with one small change. We are so much more powerful than you may think, especially together. Make sure to tune in to learn how you can start making more environmentally conscious decisions in your life today.
