Love letters to our younger selves. Let's talk about things that our younger selves needed to hear, whether that was 30 years ago, 3 years ago, or yesterday. We'll discuss everything from mental health, emotional wellness, spirituality, relationships, tra
In this candid and heartfelt episode, I sat down with military‑veteran‑turned‑author J.M. Zamudio to unpack a powerful story of complex PTSD and the lifelong impact of growing up as an adult child of an alcoholic. From her “dark night of the soul” in 2021 to the 2025 release of her debut novel, Memories of You, Jess describes how dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness meditation, and radical self‑love helped her crawl “out of the grave by her fingernails.” Listeners will hear practical insights on emotion regulation, distress‑tolerance skills, and harm‑reduction techniques with an honest look at how impostor syndrome can keep trauma survivors from seeking help. If you're searching for guidance on healing childhood trauma, overcoming depression, or finding the right therapist, this conversation offers a roadmap packed with lived experience and evidence‑based tools. The episode also explores the ripple effects of recovery: rebuilding intimate relationships, transforming pain into creative fuel, and learning to accept compassion from others. CONNECT WITH J.M. In this episode, we explore the often-overlooked concept of anticipatory grief—that wave of emotion experienced when we sense a loss before it actually happens. Building on the previous discussion of toxic positivity, we unpack the confusion and shame that can surface when we feel dread about a likely life change—be it a health crisis, the end of a relationship, or a loved one's impending transition. We explore how anticipatory grief can fuel anxiety, stifle communication, and compound other unresolved losses. By naming these hidden emotions, we open up space for acceptance, self-compassion, and the opportunity to break free from limiting beliefs around how “positive” we must always be. This episode normalizes the conflicting thoughts and feelings that arise in those liminal spaces between “now” and “what's next,” reminding us that self-awareness and self-care are vital tools for processing grief in all its forms. In this episode, we are going to have a heartfelt conversation about toxic positivity—how it's different from healthy optimism and how it can inadvertently shut down the very people we want to support. We'll explore the harm caused by well-meaning platitudes that dismiss or minimize real pain. You'll hear honest reflections on how insisting that someone “look on the bright side” or focus on “gratitude” can deepen their isolation, making them feel unseen and unheard. None of us are immune: sometimes, we've been on the receiving end of toxic positivity, and sometimes, we've dished it out simply because we didn't know what else to say. But this conversation doesn't stop at pointing out the problem—it offers a roadmap toward deeper compassion, connection, and genuine emotional presence. We'll find practical ways to sit with discomfort instead of rushing to fix or gloss over it and how to gently speak up when someone's overly positive approach feels hurtful. True acceptance allows us to hold space for all parts of ourselves and others—whether we're feeling strong, scared, angry, or anything in between. By the end of the episode, my hope is that you'll feel encouraged to explore your own habits, communicate your needs more openly, and cultivate healthier, more authentic relationships. This week, I spoke with Dylan Hundley, an artist, mother, punk, and lover. Dylan is the lead singer of the New York post-punk/new wave band Lulu Lewis. We discuss mental health, including addiction, PTSD, and panic disorder, the importance of creating spaces where people feel seen, heard, and valued, the transformative power of extending a compassionate hand to others (and ourselves), and the liberating (and sometimes profoundly challenging) experience of letting go, whether that is a relationship, a job, or even a version of ourselves that no longer fits. Is wellness an extra treat we allow ourselves when we think we deserve it, or is it sustainable, transformative, and nourishing? Does our healing journey have to be aesthetic and social media-friendly to be impactful? I spoke with Sabrina Rollo of @VigorAndSage (https://www.instagram.com/vigorandsage) about how so many of the lessons we learn through holistic practices have clear applications in our everyday lives, including boundaries, mindfulness, and creating sustainable practices and supportive communities that align with the reality of our lives. I decided to share more about my recent journey of navigating life on life's terms, including medical emergencies, relationships, fears, and judgments, while contemplating the power of showing up with willingness and compassion. Let's explore our struggles with societal expectations of how and when we choose to do this, the healing power of surrender, and the transformative experience of challenging our habitual judgments. We'll unpack the mental chatter that prevents us from setting down our emotional weapons and embracing vulnerability, curiosity, and generosity in daily interactions, highlighting that growth happens when we show up authentically and extend understanding to ourselves and others, even in the face of uncertainty. This episode is an invitation to reflect on how assumptions shape our perceptions and the potential for positive change when we choose empathy and connection over judgment. Is it possible to find self-acceptance and wholeness in relationships, workplaces, and locations where we don't belong? The relationship is ending, we need to find a new job, and we should have started packing our things and looking for a new home weeks ago. Instead of tenderly connecting with our wholeness, our flaws, or the parts of ourselves we're insecure about, we lean into perfectionism. We attempt to control outcomes and not let anyone see that our outsides don't match our insides. We've all had moments where we felt out of place and encountered self-doubt and fear, and burned ourselves out in the pursuit of perfection. Every one of us has gone to extreme lengths to fit into certain areas of our lives, to connect with people or groups where, in order to stay, we had to wear a mask, and it was incredibly heavy. In this episode, we explore how uncomfortable, self-denying, and self-defeating it is to force something to work when it is clearly not working. Instead of shaming ourselves for not fitting in, we offer a tender invitation and acknowledgment that maybe the mess of our very human experience, the parts of ourselves we'd rather hide, are exactly what the world needs. Let's rediscover the inherent worthiness of simply being our authentic selves. I am so excited to introduce all of you to Wendi Eckstein, my long-time friend and teacher. We sat down for a beautiful discussion about Reiki, energy work, boundaries, energetic hygiene, and the importance of honoring and cultivating our intuition. We explore what it means to be a deeply sensitive person while living a spiritual life in this human world and how it can be humble, powerful, and completely counterintuitive to the idea of spirituality that we are constantly sold. We talk about what it means to be a care conduit vs. a caretaker, showing up with both boundaries and unconditional love and how we can nurture ourselves while also showing up for others. Let's explore the phrase, "I am less than the actions I take," and reflect on the profound implications of aligning thoughts with actions. Originating from a talk by Earl Hightower, the phrase serves as a powerful catalyst for introspection, urging listeners to release themselves from the stories all have running on a loop in our minds about who we are and who we could be “if only…” We explore the nuances of self-perception, the inconsistency between intentions and behaviors, and the importance of discernment. Whether this applies to our family of origin or intimate partnerships or occurs in the workplace, we can find ways to navigate the complexity of conflicts and resolutions, emphasizing the freedom that comes from evaluating one's actions first. Ultimately, the episode challenges listeners to assess the authenticity of their principles by examining whether they stand up in uncomfortable moments, inspiring a journey toward consistent alignment of thoughts and actions for personal growth and positive change. Today, we're exploring the physical, mental, and financial impact of work trauma. Toxic and abusive work environments can be so commonplace in our culture that we feel pressure to accept the unacceptable. They begin to chip away at our self-esteem, negatively impact our health, and drastically increase both social isolation and our fears of deprivation. So, what can we do when we start noticing the red flags? Do we automatically talk ourselves out of gut feelings, second-guessing our instincts? Do we make lifestyle adjustments to accommodate our new traumatic reality, thinking it's just a phase? For so many of us, work trauma brings us to a breaking point. From the “Sunday scaries” to suicidal ideation, It's a silent struggle that many face but few talk about openly. Have you ever found yourself on emotional autopilot, going through the motions yet feeling completely out of alignment? You are not alone. For many of us, this disconnection with our authentic selves happens without us even noticing. In this episode, we delve into the discomfort of feeling like a stranger to oneself and the energy mismatches that leave us lost and bewildered in a modern-day wilderness defined by societal expectations, technology, and the relentless pursuit of perfection. With themes of compassion, discernment, and empathy, we explore the complexities of modern life. It's a journey into reclaiming our authentic selves in a world that almost demands conformity and opening up to the beauty of encountering those who reflect our true essence and the lessons learned from those who enter our lives with friction. I'm sure you've heard the saying, “Time heals all wounds.” But what have we actually experienced in the overlap of time and harm? Have we magically forgiven others and learned valuable lessons, or have resentments festered and habits formed that prevented us from the ability to navigate conflict resolution with honesty, willingness, and integrity? Let's unpack the myth of automatic healing, challenging the notion that the mere passage of time can passively mend emotional wounds and repair harm. Healing is an active and intentional process requiring introspection, patience, understanding, and integration of discomfort. Together, we will explore the grief of conflict and the many solutions we can find in the consistent practice of accountability, apologies, and making amends. So often, discussions around failure focus on our education or our profession. But what happens when we experience real or perceived failure in other areas of our lives, whether that is our relationships, resources, or health? This episode is a reminder that to fail is to be human and to be human is to be a little uncomfortable at times, yet society often stigmatizes failure as a mark of inadequacy. Failure often leaves emotional wounds, and while it can be difficult to access during moments of shame, accountability, discernment, and self-forgiveness become the balm that heals these wounds. Does failure define us? Is it informative? And can we possibly work with it instead of just beating ourselves up? Compassion allows us to see the shared humanity in our struggles and establishes a foundation where individuals feel safe to be authentic and where failure is met with kindness rather than judgment. Generosity can often feel like an expression we reserve for moments when it suits us, or when we are overflowing with abundance, or when it is convenient and makes us look really, really good, and of course, only for those we deem worthy. But what about generosity as a lens through which we view our place in the world? This goes much deeper than gratitude or kindness; generosity is claiming responsibility for what we can bring to a situation and how, more often than not, our gift isn't the shiny, glamorous, or attractive thing we hope the world remembers us by. It is usually far simpler and much more uncomfortable to part with. Today, we are discussing generosity as medicine, and we are asking ourselves the powerful question, what is the most generous thing I can do in this situation? Are you the person everyone turns to in a crisis or when they need advice or resources, but you never feel you can ask that of others? Do people only invite you to things if everyone else is busy? Are you often the recipient of other people's drama and trauma but not their consistent friendship and support? Today, we are exploring what it means to be the "filler" person, the overlooked or invisible backup option person who exists on the emotional outskirts of everyone else's life and is only called in to do emotional labor. Whether in our friendships, romantic partnerships, workplace dynamics, or our family of origin, being the filler person is a paradox of being the reliable confidant in moments of crisis while feeling invisible during times of celebration. The episode gently encourages self-reflection, prompting listeners to consider their roles in relationships—whether they identify with the overlooked friend or recognize patterns of expecting emotional support from others. It is a powerful reminder that being the invisible filler friend doesn't define one's worth. Instead, it serves as an invitation to explore the richness of one's own life, finding liberation outside the gaze of others. Through a compassionate exploration of human connections, we invite listeners to reflect, grow, and embrace their wholeness beyond the roles others may assign to us. So often, we are encouraged to immediately distance ourselves from any thought, feeling, or behavior deemed negative. But by doing so, are we missing opportunities to drop into deeper levels of awareness around what motivates, scares, entices, and triggers us? This episode explores what discomfort can reveal to us about ourselves and how approaching discomfort from a position of neutrality allows us to write a new story about who we are and what we want. If you have ever been in a situation where it felt as if everyone other than you were given an instruction manual for life, or you felt uncomfortable in moments where you "should" have felt happy, this episode is for you. We've all heard about being our best, highest, or most productive selves. But what does it mean to create space for our favorite selves? In this episode, we will explore the empowering (and very revealing) experience of coming into conscious contact with what we want for ourselves, what we love about ourselves, and the story of unworthiness that separates us from living every day as our favorite selves. The world is very reactive toward change-makers, alchemists, and communicators. By taking up space as we accept and trust ourselves, we can inadvertently position ourselves in conflict with anyone who benefits from our discomfort, fear, and insecurity. We can become the scapegoat, which is a real challenge for those of us who spent so much of our lives hiding who we were or minimizing our wants and needs for fear of consequences, humiliation, or abandonment. Are we burning our lives to the ground after this episode and destroying relationships? No. We are simply taking the first steps toward our purpose, capacity, and, ultimately, our favorite selves (even if we don't know who that is yet). We've all had moments where we struggled with using our voices for fear of being disliked, misinterpreted, or rejected. This happens in work environments, within our families, our friend groups, or in our intimate partnerships. Let's explore why we sometimes struggle with the discomfort of asking for what we want and need and how we can increase our tolerance and acceptance through daily practices. We'll explore some key questions including: Are you saying what needs to be said? Are you shutting down parts of yourself in order to keep the peace? Do you feel safe enough in your relationships to establish boundaries? Do you feel comfortable being seen and known? Is this behavior eroding our relationships and our sense of self? Self-sabotage takes on many forms and can cause damage to our relationships, our self-perception, and our ability to engage in behaviors that align with our values. How can we recognize when we are self-sabotaging, and what can we do about it? This episode is a message of hope and normalization around the very human topic of self-defeating behaviors that we use to control our fears and anxieties. Are we compulsively running away from the reality of our lives, or are we consciously walking towards our next experience with intention? And how can we tell the difference? How can we lean into change, discomfort, and growth as our internal or external realities transform without clinging to past perceptions and old stories? If you feel too stuck, rigid, or scared to start something new, this episode is for you. Many of us are fearful of being a beginner, inexperienced, or not being absolutely amazing the very first time we try something new. This fear introduces rigidity into our lives that tells us it is protecting us from harm and uncertainty when really it is blocking us from creativity, possibility, solutions, and connection. In this episode, we discuss cultivating a beginner mindset and how that can empower us in every area of our lives. This episode speaks directly to anyone who feels that if they don't know what is going on at all times, then something must be wrong. We deserve some peace, a little relief, and a deep exhale. So many of us are familiar with fight, flight, and freeze trauma responses, but what about fawning? How does fawning lead to people pleasing? And how is people pleasing more than just a bid for connection, how is it a coping mechanism that has distorted to become a bit manipulative? A very difficult lesson some of us learn the hard way is that people who are not treating us well won't treat us better if we work harder. People pleasing may have been a survival mechanism when we were younger, but as adults, how can we evolve our tools to allow us to go from surviving to thriving? This episode is a very gentle exploration of some taboo topics, so that we can begin to reflect on our own thoughts and behavior to answer the question, are we giving, or are we grasping? If you think you may have accidentally spent your entire life making sure everyone else around you felt comfortable, only to realize, you never felt comfortable the whole time, this episode is for you. In my return episode following a brief health hiatus, I ask the question, "What if we didn't run away from ourselves?" The world talks about acceptance and self-acceptance, but what happens when we are moving through cycles of fear, deprivation, sadness, or loneliness? Very often, we are encouraged to call these things by a different name, to distract ourselves into new and more attractive feelings, or wear a mask to appease the outside world. What if we decided that our full range of human emotions and experiences were simply okay, expected, and not even that out of the ordinary? What if we decided that all of us was welcome here? What is the difference between our breakdowns and our breakthroughs, and what can we learn from them? If something in our lives is continually breaking down and always seems on the verge of falling apart, maybe we should just let it. Sometimes I think the “aha” moment occurs when we stop evaluating our strengths and skills by how hard we can work to fix things, how proficient we are at foreseeing problems, or how skilled we are at playing emotional and intellectual chess and instead appreciate how gracefully we can let things go. "It's almost like we think the way other people drink." "I am so afraid of being found out, but I don't even know what I did." "If I don't know what is going on or can't see 5 steps ahead, then something must be wrong." If these statements resonate with you, then you have found yourself in the right place. I sat down this evening with no notes or outlines, I hit record and just started talking to you the exact same way I talk to my younger self. It can be challenging to admit that as adults with agency, opportunities, and freedom, that we still feel the aftershocks of trauma or deprivation in our lives. I understand the appeal to lean towards bravado, to put up walls, to hide behind a mask of overcompensation or perfection to distance ourselves from those feelings that seem to chase us. But that always ends up leaving us empty. This episode is a reminder that you are not alone, you are only responsible for yourself, you don't have to fix it, you don't have to fix them, and that sometimes it's okay to just sit this one out. *Please note there is changing language around substance use disorders. For the sake of this community and the specifics of what I am discussing here today, I will continue to use the terms alcoholism and addiction. I understand and honor that may not resonate for everyone. If we are not careful, we can go through our whole lives and only be known for what we did for people and what we hid from people instead of being known for who we are and what we thought, felt, liked, loved, and needed. In this episode, we explore what happens when we speak our truth and live authentically when there are things we don't want to say out loud. If you've lost your voice, if you are choking on your words, if you worry about being rejected or abandoned when you show up in your wholeness, if that mask of invisibility is getting too heavy to hold up any longer, this episode is for you. How do we cultivate space for acceptance and discernment in cycles and seasons of uncomfortable transformation? Being a human being living a human life is not a medical condition that needs to be treated. Can we sit with our thoughts, feelings, and experiences and find value in what the world tells us are undesirable or unnecessary moments of challenging growth? Maybe these cycles in our life aren't punishment; maybe they're poetry. Live from my backyard! Yes, that's right. I laid in the grass of my backyard and soaked up the sunshine while recording this week's episode, sacrificing audio quality for a heartfelt energy transmission. This week we explore what it means to take up emotional space, to see and be seen, to take off our masks of perfection and anchor into our authenticity. We also touch on the moments of contraction, whether big or small, when we attempt to manage ourselves or other people by making ourselves invisible or pushing others away.
