I love the steps. They have helped me reach a potential that I never knew I had! More than that I love sharing my experience in the fact that it may help you to a better life. I have been studying the steps since I was 18 years old now and I have helped and seen others in this program make it. Rarely have we seen a person fail who has thoroughly followed our path.
In this episode, I continue with information I received in 1992 that changed my sobriety in every single way. Part 13: Step Nine(Originally broadcast in 2021)

How to Start a Podcast Series: Step Nine Mastering Your Podcast Craft Mastery is all about developing the skills and knowledge to become a pro at something. Just like you wouldn't expect a little kid who wants to do gymnastics to compete in the Olympics right away, or a newbie runner to jump into a marathon without training, podcasting takes time and dedication; it's all about practice, practice, practice! I'll share some of my own podcasting ups and downs, including the importance of showing up even when it's tough. We'll also cover some practical tips and tools to help you keep going: - Finding a supportive podcasting community for support. - Investing in continuing education - Setting goals and finding accountability partners to stay on track. - Regularly reassess your podcasting goals and strategies. Finally, I'll answer two big questions: how long does it take to see podcasting results, and what does it take to build a successful podcast? Quotes "When you're in community with other like minded podcasters, it spurs you on to try new things. It encourages you to keep going." "No one expects a four year old who says, "I want to be an Olympic gymnastics girl” to go out onto the floor and do a backhand spring into a back tuck or do the bars right off the bat. That's just not how it works. So it is with podcasting… you have to show up and practice, practice, practice.” Call to Action Hit me up on Instagram www.instagram.com/kristinfieldschadwick and let me know one step you'll take to master your podcasting craft this next week or month—I'd love to hear from you. The thought of becoming a homeowner can be very overwhelming, but have no fear! In Step Nine of David Sidoni's How to Buy a Home series, he gives you some practical advice on how you can practice being a homeowner before you actually become one. Following this step gets you on the right track financially and gives you the confidence you need to jump into your new chapter of home ownership. Here are some key topics from today's conversation: Balancing your budget Practicing to avoid pain in ownership Playing the long game The house party! Episode Highlights: [01:21] The “B” Word Let's start with the money - a.k.a. your budget. There are lots of different ways to attack your budget, but you need to focus on being able to save while also paying your expenses. When you're still renting and saving for that down payment, that percentage of your income you need to save might need to be higher. But, many folks report that they get so used to saving, they still follow a very similar process after they've purchased their new home, just at a smaller percentage than before! Saving is a habit that you need to get into when you're preparing to buy a home and there's no better time than the present to start. A great way to get started is by talking to your unicorn lender and estimate a PITI payment that aligns with the amount you're approved for then saving that each month. You're practicing your payment. [09:37] Play the Long Game Your home will never feel more expensive than it does in the first three years. The mortgage will feel the highest in these first three years because you are used to paying an increasing rent. While the rent might be lower than a mortgage payment, it will stay the same. So, pull out a spreadsheet and start planning how you can play the game. Yes, spreadsheets can be intimidating. But, having a concrete plan can make all the difference when planning for your future.

Step Nine of the Twelve Steps Codependents' Guide To The Twelve Steps, Melody Beattie (CODA) STEP 9 - Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. Quote #1 - “…allowing other people to have their paths and issues and learning to have our own.”(p134) Quote #2 - “...We must work through, and experience fully, our feelings. We must clearly identify and accept the abuse. We need to figure out what our new behaviors and responses to others need to be, so the abuse or mistreatment doesn't continue. And then we will be led into forgiveness.” (p135) Quote #3 - “Sometimes the lesson is establishing boundaries...learning to say no...learning to own our power and respect and trust our feelings, wants, and needs. Sometimes the lesson isn't clear, and all we can do is accept that the incident happened.” (p135) Quote #4 - “Often, the shorter the amend, the better. The cleaner and clearer, the better. The more direct, the better. The more it comes from the heart, the better. The more it is led by Divine Guidance, the better.” (p143) Quote #5 - “Sometimes I've said, “I'm sorry if what I need to do to take care of myself hurt you. It was not intended or designed to do that.””(p144) Quote #6 - “ All of recovery— all of what we are going through — has to do with making an amend to ourselves. Giving ourselves permission to have our feelings is an amend. Giving ourselves permission to be alive are happy is an amend. Taking gentle, compassionate, loving care of ourselves is an amend. Learning to set boundaries, be direct, and stop defeating and victimizing ourselves is an amend. Learning to stop allowing others to mistreat and control us is an amend. Learning to stop expecting perfection of ourselves, own our power, and be who we are is an amend to ourselves. Learning to listen to and trust ourselves is an important amend. Learning to trust our instincts and value our feelings and needs is an amend. We may have many amends to make to that frightened, abused, or neglected child within us —amends for being so critical, negligent, and shameful. We owe ourselves an apology and changed behavior for not allowing ourselves to receive the love and nurturing we need, especially from ourselves. We owe ourselves an apology and changed behavior for the sometimes terrible ideas we have maintained, dwelled on, and believed about ourselves. That we aren't lovable, aren't good enough, can't think, don't deserve success, don't deserve to have fun, or don't deserve to recover are untrue beliefs we have assumed, beliefs that need correcting as part of this program of making amends to ourselves.”(p145) Quote #7 - “I spent years looking to other people, looking to relationships, to take care of the child within me. I looked to relationships to comfort my fear and to nurture, support, and protect that child within. I looked for relationships to be there for me because I wasn't willing to be there for myself. I didn't know how. Now, slowly, I'm learning a better way. I'm learning how to listen to that child I abandoned most of my life. I'm learning ways to get in touch with her, hear her, and give her the comfort, nurturing, protection, guidance, and discipline she needs.” (p146) Quote #8 - “This behavior of nurturing the child within is not foolish, as I once believed. It is healing. A few moments a day of caring for that child frees my adult to be rejuvenated and responsible, and lets my child feel warm, safe, and cared for. It also enables me to be a nurturing effective parent to my children. They have taught me much about my inner child and what she needs; my inner child helps teach me about what my children need.” (p146) Quote #9 - “I needed to forgive myself and develop a better relationship with myself. I needed to talk better to and about myself; I needed to forgive and forget; I needed to stop punishing myself for the wrongs I had done and for what others had done to me.” (p147)

In A Gentle Path Through the Twelve Steps, Dr. Patrick Carnes offers the Steps as a pattern of practices and habits that make lasting recovery possible. We can use these principles as a guide to a new way of living--letting go of our old ways of thinking and acting and accepting that change in our lives is both ongoing and inevitable.
Join us as Elizabeth F., from Philadelphia, PA, shares her experience, strength and hope around today's Daily Reflection, I am Responsible. I AM RESPONSIBLEFor the readiness to take the full consequences of our past acts, and to take responsibility for the well-being of others at the same time, is the very spirit of Step Nine.— TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 87In recovery, and through the help of Alcoholics Anonymous, I learn that the very thing I fear is my freedom. It comes from my tendency to recoil from taking responsibility for anything: I deny, I ignore, I blame, I avoid. Then one day, I look, I admit, I accept. The freedom, the healing and the recovery I experience is in the looking, admitting and accepting. I learn to say, "Yes, I am responsible." When I can speak those words with honesty and sincerity, then I am free. From the book Daily ReflectionsCopyright © 1990 by Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc.The Kingdom Investor | PodcastTake your generosity to the next level, impact more lives and build a godly legacy! Tune in as Suzanne shares from the heart about her experience around today's Daily Reflection, Repairing the Damage, and struggles she's facing in her life. REPAIRING THE DAMAGEGood judgment, a careful sense of timing, courage and prudence – these are the qualities we shall need when we take Step Nine.— TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 83To make amends can be viewed two ways: first, that of repairing damage, for if I have damaged my neighbor's fence, I "make a mend," and that is a direct amend; the second way is by modifying my behavior, for if my actions have harmed someone, I make a daily effort to cause no further harm. I "mend my ways," and that is an indirect amend. Which is the best approach? The only right approach, provided that I am causing no further harm in so doing, is to do both. If harm is done, then I simply "mend my ways." To take action in this manner assures me of making honest amends. From the book Daily ReflectionsCopyright © 1990 by Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc.Listen to The Bearded Mystic Podcast Creating a community to deepen our understanding of Non-Duality in Hinduism Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the show
Our addictions kept us isolated from others--even the people we hurt. They also often made us strangers to ourselves. Those of us who also live with a mental disorder can have a hard time figuring out which of our diseases has done the most harm, and how we can possibly start healing our relationships as well as ourselves. This can make the direct amends of Step Nine feel almost impossible.
Daily Reflection Podcast for September 6thKevin C. from Philadelphia shares about the powerful impact of the ninth step on his life and how it's helped him remove threats to his sobriety.REMOVING THREATS TO SOBRIETY. . . except when to do so would injure them or others.ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 59Step Nine restores in me a feeling of belonging, not only to the human race but also to the everyday world. First, the Step makes me leave the safety of A.A., so that I may deal with non-A.A. people "out there," on their terms, not mine. It is a frightening but necessary action if I am to get back into life. Second, Step Nine allows me to remove threats to my sobriety by healing past relationships. Tony K. from Jacksonville Beach, FL shares his experience around Building a New Life in recovery.BUILDING A NEW LIFEWe feel a man is unthinking when he says sobriety is enough.ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 82When I reflect on Step Nine, I see that physical sobriety must be enough for me. I need to remember the hopelessness I felt before I found sobriety, and how I was willing to go to any lengths for it. Physical sobriety is not enough for those around me, however, since I must see that God's gift is used to build a new life for my family and loved ones. Just as importantly, I must be available to help others who want the A.A. way of life. I ask God to help me share the gift of sobriety so that its benefits may be shown to those I know and love. From the book Daily ReflectionsCopyright © 1990 by Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc.Healthy Lifestyle Solutions with Maya AcostaAre you ready to upgrade your health to a new level and do so by learning from experts...Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the show
“Every A.A. has found that he can make little headway in this new adventure of living until he first backtracks and really makes an accurate and unsparing survey of the human wreckage he has left in his wake.” Remember, you have acted with courage working all of your previous steps in AA and staying sober! With Step Eight you have the opportunity to translate your experience of courage into developing a compassionate spirit. The exact wording of step 8 is: Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all. “The readiness to take the full consequences of our past acts, and to take responsibility for the well-being of others at the same time, is the very spirit of Step Nine.” At this point in our step work, we may be trudging the road to happy destiny, but we've reached the point where we must repair what we left behind us on a path of shattered relationships. Step Nine of AA Alcoholics Anonymous is the perfect time to let go of the horrible way we feel about our past and to repair relationships radically. Living with the leftover guilt and shame from past wrongdoings prevents us from moving forward and puts us at risk of using again! The exact wording of step 9 is: Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. Welcome to An Atheist Reads the Big Book of AA Episode 28! In this episode I cover step nine: made direct amends to such people wherever possible, expect when to do so would injure them or others AND tradition nine: AA, as such, ought never be organized; but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve. This rounds out the last of the action steps before getting into the maintenance portion of the program of AA. For me this was the most difficult to digest but over time I have learned that this step can be taken in smaller chunks and with the right guidance has done more to help me in the long run than many of the ones before it. With Step Nine we make our best effort to contact the people we have harmed, admit the wrongs we have done them, express our remorse, and offer some kind of reparation. The process that began in the Fourth Step, and culminated in the Ninth, now becomes a part of our lives, a daily stance, a practice that will keep us sexually sober and spiritually connected. Tune in to find out what we have to say about this valuable step.

When I can speak those words with honesty and sincerity, then I am free. From the book Daily ReflectionsCopyright © 1990 by Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc.Buy the Daily Reflection BookVisit our web siteVisit our blogVisit our Facebook GroupFollow us on TwitterSupport the Podcast:- On Patreon- On PayPalIf you're struggling with alcohol or addiction, or wondering how to stop drinking it's helpful to know that there's a solution that has worked for millions of people. Step Nine points the way to a more serene sobriety by letting me clear away past wreckage, lest it bring me down. From the book Daily ReflectionsCopyright © 1990 by Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc.Buy the Daily Reflection Book: https://amzn.to/3scijVaVisit our web site: https://www.dailyreflectionpodcast.comVisit our blog: https://blog.dailyreflectionpodcast.comVisit our Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/dailyreflectionpodcastFollow us on Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/dailyreflectorSupport the Podcast:- On Patreon: https://patreon.com/dailyreflection- On PayPal: https://paypal.me/dailyreflectionIf you're struggling with alcohol or addiction, or wondering how to stop drinking it's helpful to know that there's a solution that has worked for millions of people. Tony K. from Jacksonville Beach, FL shares his experience around Building a New Life in recovery.BUILDING A NEW LIFEWe feel a man is unthinking when he says sobriety is enough.ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. From the book Daily ReflectionsCopyright © 1990 by Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc.Need the Daily Reflection Book?Visit our web siteRead about Recovery on our BlogVisit our Facebook GroupFollow us on TwitterSupport the Podcast:- On Patreon: https://patreon.com/dailyreflection- On PayPal: https://paypal.me/dailyreflectionIf you're struggling with alcohol or addiction, or wondering how to stop drinking it's helpful to know that there's a solution that has worked for millions of people. 1 Corinthians 6:9 Don't you know that evil people will not receive God's kingdom? Don't be fooled. In my early years of addiction, I looked up to and followed all the wrong people. My heroes were those that could drink the most, those that won the most fights, those that didn't care. In the recovery that changed! I realized being a hero has nothing to do with how macho you are and everything to do with what you believe and how committed you are to your beliefs. Recovery is about facing the truth about what you believe and changing your beliefs if you need to. How has what I believed in the past got me in trouble? Which of my beliefs do I need to change? Am I ready and willing to change?

Today I will be discussing the entire Step Nine, but my main focus will be the astral section specifically and the physical section secondarily. The mental section is comprised of a number of methods for using a Magic Mirror which were quite well explained so I see no value in my adding to Bardon's words. The astral and physical sections however, do require some further explanation. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/MysticalThoughts/support

We talk step 9 and everything we know about the amends process. The 9th step involves lots of creative thinking about how to repair the harm we have done in the world. We look at the 3 R's of amends: restoration, restitution, and resolution. These are the goals of amends, to try to make whole again what we have had a hand in harming. Also, the continued amends of living differently because we don't like the person we were when we harmed people. We explore what is the sponsor's responsibility or influence in this process. Each month we release a new full-length album right on our podcast and then we break down the songs and the album's production. Today we look at the album View From Nowhere [Improv No. 9]. This was recorded from January 1st to January 4th, 2019 to a cassette four track. We made up the songs while we played. All the overdubs were done as fast as possible before moving on. We filled up a single cassette tape. Everything on that tape is on the album in the order it was recorded. It's called an "improv album." This one explores various themes like self-deception, self-care, aspiration, and the quest for wisdom. Thanks so much for listening.Order/Stream View From Nowhere [Improv No. 9]: https://smarturl.it/viewfromnoSubscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCs94XWuYNzUP1eE0QmIyVQg

THE TAKE 12 RECOVERY RADIO SHOW presents Entitled to Overcome (Solutions for Life, Today) Cleaning up the wreckage of our past is something that people who are in long-term recovery make as a priority in their Twelve Step process, specifically in Step Nine as we make amends to those we have harmed. Sometimes this happens without incident, and other times it can be extremely stressful and challenging. We asked our listeners to share with us how long it has taken to clean up the wreckage of their past and what was their most grateful experience in doing so. Closing Song: Trail of Light by Gracie Vandivor

SPECIAL TOPIC Night - "Child Abuse, Trauma and 12-Step Recovery" - STEP 9 - SCAN host Bill Murray will be joined by special guest co-host Rivka Edery, MSW, LCSW, from NYC, author of the book “Trauma and Transformation: A 12-Step Guide." Bill founded the recently launched Adult Survivors of Child Abuse Anonymous (ASCAA). Together they will lead tonight's discussion on STEP 9: "Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others." Rivka points out that "Step Nine is no different than the other steps, and it reminds you once again, that you cannot overcome personal difficulty alone. You have prayer as your constant companion to get you through. You pray for the willingness to be willing." Bill adds, "This step is where 'The Promises' occur in the Big Book, and we're told they begin to appear 'before we're half-way through [this step].' By now the clearing away the wreckage of the past is well underway, and this means making a turn to a profound sense of self-esteem, purpose and 'belonging' in the world .. a sense of finally being truly comfortable living inside one's own skin." ~~ A child abuse survivor herself, Rivka Edery is grateful for the spiritual recovery she found in the 12 Steps of AA. She's been active in the 12 Step community for over 17 years. Bill Murray credits his 30 plus years of recovery to the spiritual power of the 12 Step program, too. ~~ Join us every two weeks to further examine a 12 Step approach to recovery from abuse. Next show we'll address STEP 10. ~~ Please see our web page at: www.NAASCA.org/trauma-12step or write to Rivka at: rebecca.edery@gmail.com

Step 9: Made direct amends to such people whenever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift. Matthew 5:23–24 As we grow as Christians and as we grow in our recovery, we want to follow the guidance and directions of Jesus Christ. As we get to know Him better, we want to model His teachings and model His ways. We want to become more like Him. Honestly, if we are going to implement Principle 6 to the best of our ability, we need to learn to model God’s grace. But how? Let’s look at tonight’s acrostic: GRACE. God’s gift Received by our faith Accepted by God’s love Christ paid the price Everlasting gift The G in grace is GOD’S gift Grace is a gift. Grace cannot be bought. It is freely given by God to you and me. When we offer (give) our amends and expect nothing back, that’s a gift from us to those whom we have hurt. Romans 3:24 (ncv) tells us, “All need to be made right with God by his grace, which is a free gift. They need to be made free from sin through Jesus Christ.” First Peter 1:13 (ncv) says, “Prepare your minds for service and have self-control. All your hope should be for the gift of grace that will be yours when Jesus Christ is shown to you.” If my relationship with God was dependent on my being perfect, I would have trouble relating to God most of the time. Thank God that my relationship with Him is built on His grace and love for me. He gives the strength to make the amends and offer the forgiveness that Principle 6 requires. And how do we receive God’s gift of grace? That’s the R in grace: RECEIVED by our faith. No matter how hard we may work, we cannot earn our way into heaven. Only by professing our faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior can we experience His grace and have eternal life. Ephesians 2:8–9 says, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” Let me share another verse with you. Philippians 3:9 (tlb) states, “No longer counting on being saved by being good enough or by obeying God’s laws, but by trusting Christ to save me; for God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith—counting on Christ alone.” You and I tend to be more interested in what we do. God is more interested in what we are. Romans 5:2 says of Jesus, “Through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.” Just a word of warning: Our walk needs to match our talk. Our beliefs and values are seen by others in our actions. And it is through our faith in Christ that we can find the strength and courage needed for us to take the action Principle 6 requires: making your amends and offering your forgiveness. The next letter in grace is A. We are ACCEPTED by God’s love. God loved you and me while we were still out there sinning. Romans 5:8 says, “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” We can, in turn, love others because God first loved us. We can also forgive others because God first forgave us. Colossians 3:13 (tlb) says, “Be gentle and ready to forgive; never hold grudges. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.” Ephesians 2:5 (ncv) reminds us that “Though we were spiritually dead because of the things we did against God, he gave us new life with Christ. You have been saved by God’s grace.” I don’t know about you, but I know that I do not deserve God’s love. But the good news is He accepts me in spite of myself! He sees all my failures and loves me anyway. And the same goes for you. Hebrews 4:16 (ncv) tells us, “Let us, then, feel very sure that we can come before God’s throne where there is grace. There we can receive mercy and grace to help us when we need it.” Let’s move on to the C in grace: Christ paid the price. Jesus died on the cross so that all our sins, all our wrongs, are forgiven. He paid the price, sacrificed Himself for you and me so that we may be with Him forever. When we accept Christ’s work on the cross, we are made a new creation. We can then rely on God’s strength and power to enable us to forgive those who have hurt us. We can set aside our selfishness and speak the truth in love. We focus only on our part in making amends or offering our forgiveness. Ephesians 1:7 (ncv) says, “In Christ we are set free by the blood of his death, and so we have forgiveness of sins. How rich is God’s grace.” The last letter in grace is E: God’s grace is an EVERLASTING gift. Once you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord, God’s gift of grace is forever. Let me read a quote from the Big Book of AA, pages 83–84: “Once you have completed Step Nine, you will know a new freedom and a new happiness.... you will comprehend the word serenity and know peace.... You will suddenly realize that God is doing for you what you could not do for yourself.” And here’s a quote from the real Big Book—the Bible: “And I am sure that God who began the good work within you will keep right on helping you grow in his grace until his task within you is finally finished on that day when Jesus Christ returns” (Philippians 1:6 tlb). Also, 2 Thessalonians 2:16 (ncv) states, “May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father encourage you and strengthen you in every good thing you do and say. God loved us, and through his grace he gave us a good hope and encouragement that continues forever.” My life verse is 1 Peter 2:9–10 (tlb), where God says, “For you have been chosen by God himself—you are priests of the King, you are holy and pure, you are God’s very own—all this so that you may show to others how God called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were less than nothing; now you [John Baker] are God’s own. Once you knew very little of God’s kindness; now your very lives have been changed by it.” I stand before you as a product of God’s grace. Everyone here this evening who has let Christ into his or her life is also a product of God’s grace. As we model this grace, we will be able to do the work that Principle 6 requires. Let’s close tonight with Colossians 1:6: “All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God’s grace in all its truth.”
