I love the steps. They have helped me reach a potential that I never knew I had! More than that I love sharing my experience in the fact that it may help you to a better life. I have been studying the steps since I was 18 years old now and I have helped and seen others in this program make it. Rarely have we seen a person fail who has thoroughly followed our path.
In this episode, I continue with information I received in 1992 that changed my sobriety in every single way. Part 14: Step Ten(Originally broadcast in 2021)

Congratulations! You've made it to STEP TEN in David's How to Buy a Home series. If anyone knows that you're buying a home, it's likely that they're going to offer you all kinds of advice. Unfortunately, most of it is just dead wrong. This episode is all about learning the market so you can cut through the bull crap advice and feel confident in what you're doing. Here are some key topics from today's conversation: Episode Highlights: [02:06] Location, Timing, Timing The most important step to buying a home is understanding the timing. Does this mean that you should “buy low and sell high?” Absolutely not. As David always says, there is no better time than right now to buy a home. But, having a good understanding of the market means that you can get the best deal based on how the current market is going. While buying a home is different every single time, David's rule is to buy your first house based on the current market conditions when you are ready to buy. [10:44] What You Need to Know There are certain market changes that you should be aware of that can affect when you buy a home. David makes it simple by distilling it down into a list: This is just the tip of the housing market iceberg. There are so, so many market factors that will affect your ability to buy a home or what homes are available to you. [17:16] More Resources to Check Out There's a lot to buying a home, but it's a very doable process. This whole series is just a snapshot of the information available. From the Daily Reflection on October 17: A Daily Tune Up - “Every day is a day when we must carry the vision of God's will into all of our activities.” ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 85 How do I maintain my spiritual condition? For me it's quite simple: on a daily basis I ask my Higher Power to grant me the gift of sobriety for that day! I have talked to many alcoholics who have gone back to drinking and I always ask them: "Did you pray for sobriety the day you took your first drink?" Not one of them said yes. As I practice Step Ten and try to keep my house in order on a daily basis, I have the knowledge that if I ask for a daily reprieve, it will be granted. So let's talk about step 11, about maintaining our spiritual condition, and about staying in touch and in tune with our Higher Power each and every day. In episode #91, Pat B. shares how: "This is the only thing, ever, in my life that I have stuck with. No matter how badly I failed at it. No matter how badly things are not going right. I still come back to it. I come back to following the instructions." In this episode, Pat reads from the Big Book, pages 84-85, and shares experience, strength, and hope with practicing this way of life, including Step Ten.
In this episode, we cover Step Ten of the Twelve Steps Codependents' Guide To The Twelve Steps, Melody Beattie (CODA) STEP 10 - Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it Quote #1 - “We want to trust our feelings, but we must also call our intellect into play, so we don't get lost in the swell of unearned guild and defensiveness.” (p157 Codependents' Guide, M. Beattie) Quote #2 - Then I would feel confused and guilty when the feelings didn't go away. When the other person's behavior continued, so did my feelings. It took me a long time I'm still learning this lesson — to realize that my feelings are often how my Higher Power speaks to me and tries to get my attention about a lesson I need to learn. That lesson may be setting boundaries, owning my power, or learning something about myself and relationships. My feelings are not incidentals. They are an important part of me, my life, and what I need to be paying attention to.“ (p158 Codependents' Guide, M. Beattie) Quote #3 - “There is another area of our lives where our inventory may lead to the discovery of a wrongdoing that requires prompt admission. This area is one of wrongdoings toward ourselves. Not acknowledging and feeling our feelings, not setting the boundaries we need to set, not paying attention to ourselves, not trusting ourselves, not respecting ourselves, not listening to ourselves these are wrongdoings that need prompt attention.” (p158 Codependents' Guide, M. Beattie) Quote #4 - “Not being emotionally honest about our needs and wants — with ourselves of others — is a wrongdoing.” (p159 Codependents' Guide, M. Beattie) Quote #5 - “Not nurturing and taking care of the child within is a wrongdoing.” (p159 Codependents' Guide, M. Beattie) Quote #6 - “…an important part of our inventory can also focus on what we're doing right and on all that is happening within us and around us that's good.”(p162 Codependents' Guide, M. Beattie) Quote #7 - “We can let go of our need to be so critical of ourselves and others. We can look at what's right.” (p163 Codependents' Guide, M. Beattie) Quote #8 - “My peace, my joy, my love for self and other comes when I accept myself. It comes when I allow myself to be honest, open, and responsible with those I love, work with, and relate to. It comes when I'm responsible to myself and my own needs.” (p166 Codependents' Guide, M. Beattie)

For decades, the book A Program for You: A Guide to the Big Book's Design for Living has helped millions of people understand and apply the Twelve Steps to their lives and find an authentic path to recovery. In this excerpt, the authors offer Step Ten as a pattern for growing into the promises Alcoholics Anonymous makes about how we will feel and what we will experience in recovery.
Continuing to do anything in our daily lives usually means getting better at it. And so it goes with Step Ten of AA Alcoholics Anonymous. Nobody ever really enjoys admitting to being wrong, it's much easier to blame others. Admitting when we are wrong and promptly being accountable for our side of the street is absolutely necessary in order for us to maintain our spiritual progress in recovery. The best part about practicing the Tenth Step of AA in our daily lives is that the more we exercise self-discovery, honesty, humility, and reflection, the fewer apologies, and amends we have to make! The exact wording of step 10 is: We continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it. Step Ten suggests we continue to take personal inventory and continue to set right any new mistakes as we go along. We vigorously commenced this way of living as we cleaned up the past. We have entered the world of the Spirit. Our next function is to grow in understanding and effectiveness. This is not an overnight matter. It should continue for our lifetime. Tune into find out what we have to say about this step.
Welcome to An Atheist Reads the Big Book of AA Episode 29! In this episode I cover step ten: Continued to take personal inventory, and when we were wrong promptly admitted it AND tradition ten: Alcoholics Anonymous has no opinion on outside issues; hence the AA name ought never be drawn into public controversy. The stoic ready does a great job leading into these two by bringing up the concept of living outside of the feelings of anger and hate. This is further explored by looking at emotions as the chemicals they are and how important regulation is over supression. It's tempting to think that the Twelve Steps are the on-ramp to a life of recovery - the things we have to do to get onto the easy road of contented sobriety. In this excerpt from the revised edition of his classic book A Gentle Path through the Twelve Steps, Dr. Patrick Carnes explains the significance of Step Ten - that the Steps are actually a pattern for life. They offer an ongoing set of practices and habits of heart and mind that we return to daily.

This episode is also available as a blog post: https://livingliferecovery.com/2021/10/04/step-ten-week-one/ What the Bible Says about Self-Confidence “Those who think they can do it on their own end up obsessed with measuring their own moral muscle but never get around to exercising it in real life. Those who trust God's action in them find that God's Spirit is in them—living and breathing God! Obsession with self in these matters is a dead end; attention to God leads us out into the open, into a spacious, free life. Focusing on the self is the opposite of focusing on God. Anyone completely absorbed in self ignores God, ends up thinking more about self than God. That person ignores who God is and what he is doing. And God isn't pleased at being ignored.” Romans 8:5-8 Hebrews 10:26 If we give up and turn our backs on all we've learned, all we've been given, all the truth we now know, we repudiate Christ's sacrifice Luke 21:34 “But be on your guard. Don't let the sharp edge of your expectation get dulled by parties and drinking and shopping. Otherwise, that Day is going to take you by complete surprise, spring on you suddenly like a trap, Romans 8:29 God knew what he was doing from the very beginning. He decided from the outset to shape the lives of those who love him along the same lines as the life of his Son. The Son stands first in the line of humanity he restored. We see the original and intended shape of our lives there in him. Ephesians 1:4 Long before he laid down earth's foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love. “”Don't look for shortcuts to God. The market is flooded with surefire, easygoing formulas for a successful life that can be practiced in your spare time. Don't fall for that stuff, even though crowds of people do. The way to life—to God!—is vigorous and requires total attention.” (Matthew 7:13-14)
I explore how looking for "your part in things" (as taught in step 4) shows us where we've been doing things that have contributed to the difficulties in our lives. This gives us options for how to do things differently. This brings us out of victim mentality because we now see we have choices. those with victim mentality blame others and the world for their difficulties because they truly believe they have no choices. In this episode, I continue with the information from the "What Does the Big Book Say?" workshop. In this episode: Step Ten- Continues for our lifetime- Form verses substance- Restored to sanity- Proper use of the will
Assignment 2 – Orientation Continued... 4. Read and highlight Big Book instructions on Step Ten – pages 84-85. 5. Look up the word “reprieve” in the dictionary, and perhaps in more than one dictionary (“we have a daily reprieve”) and write out the definitions. 6. From the Big Book's second Title page, look up the word “recovered” and write out a definition.
Assignment 2 – Orientation Continued 1. Over the next four weeks: a. Read and highlight (always highlight when reading, even if not indicated in the instructions), from the Title page up through page xxiv (up to “The Doctor's Opinion”) with these questions under consideration. In his book Drop the Rock: The Ripple Effect, Fred H. helps us explore Step Ten, and how the habits and practices that we build in a program of recovery create positive effects in us that ripple outward into our relationships and beyond. As we work Step Ten, we come to see that all we can control is the integrity of our response to what happens.
Continuing to do anything in our daily lives usually means that we get better at it. And so it goes with Step Ten of recovery. Nobody ever really enjoys admitting to being wrong, it’s much easier to blame others. Admitting when we are wrong and promptly being accountable for our side of the street is absolutely necessary in order for us to maintain our spiritual progress in recovery. The best part about practicing the Tenth Step in our daily lives is that the more we are exercising self-discovery, honesty, humility and reflection, the less apologies and amends we have to make! Taking a personal “inventory” in Step Ten means taking stock of our emotional disturbances, especially those that could return us to drinking or other drug use. Step 10 Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it. Tonight, we talk about Step 10 http://recoveredcast.com
Those of us who've been in recovery for a little while might wonder if we could use a check-up for our recovery. Fred H. looks to Step Ten to give us these spot checks—these recovery aerobics—in Drop the Rock: The Ripple Effect.
Step 10 conversation that gets to the reasoning for doing the 10th Step. Why do we continue to look at ourselves, actions, emotions and attitudes regularly? How do we take this look? What types of things do we look at? What is the purpose of the Tenth Step? Do we keep working the steps again if we have Step 10 to keep us in check? We talk about all these topics and more. It was nice to catch up with Benn and talk about Step Ten, the first of the three maintenance steps. This step calls for us to continue to take personal inventory and when we are wrong, to promptly admit it. It can be done as a review at the end of the day, or as a spot check inventory during the day. It might also, according to the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, include a semiannual or annual housecleaning.
SPECIAL TOPIC Night - "Child Abuse, Trauma and 12-Step Recovery" - STEP 10 (and we'll include a bit about TRADITION 10) - SCAN host Bill Murray will be joined by special guest co-host Rivka Edery, MSW, LCSW, author of the book "Trauma and Transformation: A 12-Step Guide." Bill founded the recently launched Adult Survivors of Child Abuse Anonymous (ASCAA). Together they will lead tonight's discussion on STEP 10: "Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it." Step Ten is not about maintenance, because there is a rule in our universe that nothing ever stays the same. All living matter is either in a process of growing or in the process of regressing. Up until now, if you followed the first nine steps with an honest heart and the direction of a Higher Power, you will have grown considerably. If you do not keep growing, you will start sliding back into your old behavior patterns and ways of thinking. ~~ A child abuse survivor herself, Rivka Edery has been active in the 12 Step community for nearly 20 years. Bill Murray credits his 30 plus years of recovery to the spiritual power of the 12 Step program, too. ~~ Join us every two weeks to further examine a 12 Step approach to recovery from abuse. Next show we'll address STEP 10 & TRADITION 10. ~~ Please see our web page at: www.NAASCA.org/Trauma-12Step or write to Rivka at: rebecca.edery@gmail.com
