He's been the guiding teacher of Sangha in San Francisco for 15 years. He is also a nationally recognized leader in designing and implementing interventions for at-risk adolescents and is a senior trainer for Mindful Schools. Ferraro explains that our nervous system is trying to protect us from danger and it often becomes hyper vigilant. This can make us very uncomfortable in our experience. It can also cause us to check out - run through addiction, relationships, food and a thousand other things. Your mind can literally hijack your life. Ferraro explains that mindfulness is almost a silver bullet because for most people it can put us back in relationship with ourselves and our bodies and direct our attention to a different dimension of our experience. Then we are freed up to place our attention on things we feel are worthy. Our awareness becomes almost a super power. In this podcast, he also explains that self-compassion and letting go of the tyranny of perfection is critical. Life is not something you can do wrong. Once we're able to see obstacles as doorways, then we see that whatever we think was IN the way IS the way.  We can literally turn curses into blessings using the alchemy of presence.  More From Vinny Ferraro Official Website: https://vinnyferraro.org/

Compassion: A Quivering of the Heart w/ Kara HaneyCompassion (Karuna) is one of the primary heart teachings. It is the felt experience in response to a being’s pain. When we understand this through practice, we are able to cultivate compassion for our own pain and the pain of others. Thus compassion becomes a vehicle of connection, further dissolving the myth of separateness and isolation. This felt sense of separateness, the identification of being separate from, not included, or abandoned; perpetuates our pain and often is a reason why we use substances and process addictions. By developing this practice of compassion, we can begin to turn towards and see the pain, not run from or suppress it, but to recognize, open to and acknowledge that pain and sorrow exists and is a common experience with all beings. Let’s care about pain together and see what arises in seeing the true nature of suffering in the world.Kara Haney has practiced meditation and studied Buddhism since 1993. With over twenty years in recovery, her background includes both Buddhist practice in the understanding of craving and twelve-step recovery. Since 2013 she has assisted in starting Buddhist recovery groups within communities, addiction treatment facilities, and jails; and continues to be a foundational member and mentor for the Buddhist recovery community. Kara was empowered to teach by Bob Stahl and was also trained to facilitate Mindfulness and Buddhist meditation by JoAnna Hardy and Vinny Ferraro of the former Against the Stream Meditation Society. She teaches weekly Dharma groups, daylong retreats, and offers Dharma courses such as "A Year to Live" and "Eightfold Path." Kara completed a twenty-year career as a dental surgical assistant and currently enjoys living in Santa Cruz while working towards a Masters degree in Social Work.Dana/Donation https://www.buddhistrecovery.org/donateBuddhist Recovery Network https://www.BuddhistRecovery.org/Buddhist Recovery Network FacebookFind out more at https://brn-podcast.pinecast.co

How do you try to be more self-aware of your emotional state? Do you employ specific strategies to better control your emotions? How much self-compassion do you have toward yourself? What role does ‘impermanence’ play in your life? How do you emotionally prime yourself to prepare for each day? In the latest 4 X Mindfulness podcast, Neila Steele and Andy Vasily discuss the themes of impermanence, self-compassion, emotional priming, and breath control and the impact that these things can have on living a more mindful existence. Neila opens up this podcast by sharing her thoughts related to the idea of impermanence. In particular, the work of Vinny Ferraro and his mantra, “Right now it’s like this”. Vinny created this mantra to illustrate the point that any intense emotional state (positive, negative or neutral) that we are experiencing does not last, so it is important to be aware of this and remind ourselves that everything that we experience is impermanent. This can help us better shape our perspective, especially in times of difficulty. Neila’s second seed of mindfulness relates to a specific breath control strategy that we can utilize in order to better control our emotional state. Neila takes us through how to use this breath and models it for us to try out. For Andy’s first seed of mindfulness, he discusses the importance of putting more self-compassion and self-forgiveness into action in our lives, especially when we may be feeling down. His second seed of mindfulness relates to the power of priming to help shape the way we feel when we start the each day. The concept of emotional priming is discussed in detail and ways that we can emotionally prime ourselves in order to start the day off on the right foot. Andy and Neila hope you enjoy this episode and that there is takeaway applicable value that resonates with you in your life. Thanks for listening.
