    Podcast Matchmaker with Tom Schwab

Tom Schwab is a veteran in a nuclear power plant and an inbound engineer. In this episode, he shares his unique approach to social media platforms and how to use today’s technology with marketable value to his passion and work. “He focuses on time-proven strategy, and supercharges it with today’s technology.” Tom helps advising, teaching and leading people using target podcasts. 02:42 Work is what you do and not necessarily where you go. Tom shares how his life and work starting in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Growing up in the Midwest a proud alumni of Dayville Academy, he ran a nuclear power plant where he learned discipline and where everything can be taught and systematized. He taught himself and moved from sales to marketing to finally running his own distributorship. He started a company that supplies direct to patient durable medical equipment. When he started his company in the middle of the great recession, making it difficult to establish a real salesforce, he then hired MIT graduates that created Hubspot in Boston that helped him create an inbound marketing strategy. They have used content to lure customers to their business, and in 2014, started podcast interviews as additional means for their marketing. 03:34 Inbound marketing, how you used content to attract, engage, and delight customers. Now, he has his team in the United States, serving about 90 clients, helping them promote their businesses through podcasts to tell their stories and help them reach their potential customers. With selling DME’s to direct set of clients using inbound marketing, his business was voted 2nd unsexiest products sold with inbound marketing in one conference. As their initial target market are people in crutches, or will be on crutches, and fresh from surgery or from any traumatic experiences, they have gone to analyze who their target audiences must or would be and that set the tone of their marketing. They started to think of ways to gain their potential customers trust and respect in order to be known for the field of product that they are selling. 06:08 Nobody goes online and says, hmm, what am I going to be sold on today? Everybody goes online with a problem, and to look for answers to their problems. 06:48 The best way to sell something today is not to sell anything, but earn the respect, awareness and trust of those who might buy. Tom shares with Shmuel the payment methods of the products that they are selling. Ultimately, it all depends whether they are covered by insurance, and when they have to be shouldered privately by the patients of by a healthcare professional, nursing homes, etcs… Stories are also shared to understand how podcast contents are planned. The best way to attract the focused audience for the specific health care topics, and from there, the talks will make its way into looking for tangible products to use when coping up with certain traumas or accidents. Tom’s company’s goal is to eventually have the patients or customers look for their business understands they potential limitations, knowing the product that they are selling is a means to help people recover from accidents. 10:37 Shmuel to Tom: You’re targeting people with the problems, not people who are looking for the solution. And that makes sense. One client actually commended Tom and his team, telling them they are “Preparation H”, because they are doctor-recommended, focuses on the problem, get rid of the pain. “Nobody cares about your product or your service. All they care about is their pain and their rear end.” And because the team is focused on helping the client on that, they so much better that the other suppliers. 13:03 If one person is asking the question, chances are other people are asking it too. Another good point discussed in this episode is time-frame of the consumer, from not-knowing to purchasing, as per Tom’s experience, and even though it differs on the needs of each individual, another factor that weighs in on the time scale is the binding cycle of the product. How much does it cost for this number of days or months? 15:37 Biggest problem is obscurity. There are thousands of people we could help if they only knew we existed. Shmuel interestingly discusses the businesses’ concerns as well, and their needs to tweak their products in order to cater to the needs of their industry, but ends up compromising the integrity of their products. 17:12 Scarcity mentality. I don’t see people asking for me so it must be that I’m not in demand, so let me try to adjust my product to address the needs of the people in front of me. He pointed out the importance of sticking to the business product, assuming that the product is genuinely good, and avoid obnoxiously focusing away on the unique gift and talent of the product, and that will eventually make its way to the right customers/people. 19:04 Assuming that you have a real product that solves a real problem, then all you need to do is find the people that feels that pain. Tom continues to suggest ways to maximize marketing by creating meaningful content that offers solutions to the focused customer’s problems. It also creates harmonious deals with clients being specific with the services that they offer and that if they came across someone who doesn’t appreciate their business, they can proudly let go of the sales, making them accept the ideal clients that they need for their businesses. Podcasts, for Tom, have become a serious game in the technology industry right now. As it was discussed in Harvard, and group of companies making purchases on podcasts, people seem to appreciate and realize the legit business into it. 23:10 You ask a business owner to write a blog, that’s a homework assignment. You ask them to be interviewed in a podcast, they can talk about their company and their passion all day long. So now, as podcasts becomes appreciated as a more natural approach to introduce companies and ideas, it has also become a better and more effective approach for marketing businesses. Inbound marketing, according to Tom, should be focused on understanding the business and strategize it using the current tools. For him, it isn’t solely being dependent on certain tools like podcasts, but using technology and platform and answering the why’s in using it. Tom and Shmuel also gets into discussing transactions versus relationship and which platforms are better for which purpose, blogs or podcasts. Tom enumerates the factors of this technology and the percentage possibility on which will be more successful in engaging with the audiences/customers. As the episode ends, Shmuel also questions SEO technology, asking why if someone typed in “Can I build my business through podcast marketing?” and the podcast is not the first one on the list. Tom explains Google’s new technology in planning to transcribe audios moving forward. He also understood that more than the transcription, the suggested links were also about the people wants, plusmore other factors in the search engine, meaning that the suggestions aren’t just based on the titles but also the referencing and mentions in between the sites and podcasts. Tracy was the typical, quintessential, high-achieving quality performing kid, from her high school to college life. She graduated with a Psychology degree, but by some work of luck (or maybe not?) and swine flu, she got a cubicle on Wall Street, which eventually made her life miserable. With the tremendous courage, she told us the story of how she decided to quit her 9 to 5 job, while still maintaining a working relationship with her team, giving her a smooth exit from Wall Street. Unfortunately, things after that didn’t come easy.* * “When I finally woke up and pull my head out of this thing and decided ‘ I have to get out of here’, I had no idea where I have to go.” Tracy’s career background was mostly decided out of fear, being afraid to graduate without a job, or to be the unsuccessful one from her batch. I have heard my fair share of these kind of stories, of people getting a diploma and making a career out of what their parents or social circle expected them to do. Having the passion to hear people’s stories, and wanting to create better strategies for those who have been on the same road as her, Tracy had taught the following steps: **First step is: Figure out your core values. ** Truly get clear on what you love. What are your CORE values? Freedom, stability, integrity, flexibility? Get very clear to what are the values that are important to one’s being, and committing to those values. **Steps 2 and 3 are Nature and Nurture. ** It is overlapping what comes naturally to one’s self, and what has been learnt over time. Whatever is in between, it is the niche, the sandbox, the genius zone. It should be something that you are good at and something that you can work with. Finally, the question on how to focus on finding the core values arises with the worry of having a stable income to sustain a family, which is summed up to still knowing the core values, the thing that can give value to other people. Having the money and the luxury as the motivator for finding one’s self is never a guarantee for success, and most often than not, is a sure fail for the career, and even destroys life. **Final Thoughts ** The biggest regret of the dying is not living true to themselves. You will never regret trying something new, and you will regret not trying. Book a call with Tracy today!** ** TracyTimm.com/9to5

Who Is Neil Patel? Neil Patel is a New York Times bestselling author. The Wall Street Journal calls him a top influencer on the web, Forbes says he is one of the top 10 marketers, and Entrepreneur Magazine says he created one of the 100 most brilliant companies. He was recognized as a top 100 entrepreneur under the age of 30 by President Obama and a top 100 entrepreneur under the age of 35 by the United Nations.     The Dream Neil started trying to find a  six-figure job online. Seeing that they were hard to come by, he notices that Monster.com was a publicly traded company that was doing millions in revenue. So he decided to replicate a similar job board himself called AdviceMonekey.com  and waited for the money to start flowing in.   You Need To Attract Traffic To Your Site That's when Neil realized that the best site still needs really strong marketing behind it, to drive traffic to the site. After hiring and being ripped off by several expensive marketing firms, Neil decided that it was time to learn this stuff himself. Once he realized that he was really good at marketing and was doing well himself, Neil started doing this full time for others too.   Did you benefit from your College education? College didn't really help me at all, it slowed me down. I'm learning more now by jumping right into entrepreneurship. 73% of all college graduates are not working in an area related to their degree within 10 years of graduating. That means that your degree will probably not be the way you earn your livelihood for most of your life! The notion that baby boomers have been pushing on their children that a great education and lots of hard work will guarantee your success in the business world is no longer relevant or true. Today's market is constantly changing with each new technological advance and yesterday's knowledge is no longer relevant. Employers care more about employees soft skills than their formal education. They want to be able to train new team members quickly to work their way and fit into the company culture.   Marketing Today Marketing now is a multi-channel approach. Whereas in the past your goal was basically to rank well on search engines, nowadays, you will need to do well in lots of other areas too to ensure success. Because the markets are so much more competitive and saturated, you need to focus on multiple levels and do them or well in order to be successful. These channels include: Organic search Paid search Social media Podcasting Respond and genuinely care about your customers (you can't fake authenticity) Videos Create a brand and connection with your audience Using all of these channels successfully will make you successful. Easier said than done though.   Online Marketing School Marketing School brings you 10 minutes of actionable marketing advice every single day. Get the right tips to take your business to the next level and get to work right away. The Online Marketing School is co-hosted with Eric Siu where they share really practical tactics that can be immediately implemented into your online marketing plan. Keeping it under 10 minutes means you will get to the beef quickly and get back to your day.   "Google and YouTube Are My Mentors". Neil explains that he doesn't have one particular person that serves as his mentor. Instead, the world is full of his mentors. Namely, Google, YouTube and anyone else who shares valuable information online. You can learn from the greatest business minds in the world like Elon Musk online. Best of all, it's free and they are happy and excited to share it with you. No mentor - learn through experience and learning online/ youtube etc. You don't necessarily need a mentor, Google and YouTube are great mentors. You can learn from Elon Musk online too and it's free and you don't even need to know him!     5 Practical Tips To Promote Your Online Content Use BuzzSumo to find keywords and influencers in your industry. View shares numbers for each piece of content. Manually ask them to share your content. This is tedious but it works. You will need to send out hundreds of emails to make this work and you will see people will start sharing your content. less than 30% will share your content. Hunter.io - Great tool to discover email addresses   If you want a quick fix, this is not for you. What's separates the top tier marketers from the second tier of online marketers? Creativity - There's is so much competition out there, so you need to think outside of the box. Only those with the best content will ultimately win. Execution - if you have creativity and execution then you're golden. There's no point in all the complex online tools (many of which are free!) if you don't take action. Give away a free tool and collect leads - as opposed to paid ads. This is the way to have an edge up on the competition without having such a strong budget. You need to go out there and execute. There's nothing you can read to help you out. You need to get out there and experience in order to get you there.   Follow Neil! In this episode, we welcome back the LinkedIn Expert Viveka Von Rosen. Click here to listen to our first conversation back in Episode 19.   Lesser Known LinkedIn Tips And Tricks   1)   LinkedIn Jobs This is a great tool to get a real feel for the industry that you are researching. You may not really be applying for the job per se, however, you can reach out and offer your service or product to help them out and support them. You will also be able to see the companies that are hiring. Once you find the company that you are interested in, you can find a contact that can serve as the gateway person with just a few clicks. They may be able to set up a meeting or phone call with you and the real decision maker. 2)   LinkedIn Salary This is a great tool to learn your true worth in the industry and what people are willing to pay for your skills. You will be able to price yourself based on the industry standards and will not over or undercharge for your skills and services. You will also learn the industry-specific terms and lingo that you can use to modify your own profile. This will help you be 'found ' in LinkedIn search results for the terms or keywords that you are looking for.   Should I Apply Directly On LinkedIn? Surprisingly, LinkedIn may not be the best place to actually apply for the job. Many companies post their jobs on their company's because they must. The decision may already have been made even before the job is posted. Jobs posted on LinkedIn are still helpful in knowing that the company is hiring and you can take the next steps in bypassing the traditional HR interview process. This can be connecting with a person that you already know within the organization. Additionally, you can see what the company posts on their page as well as the decision maker's page. If you see they engaged with a post about a particular topic, you can come prepared to pepper that topic in the conversation. Important Note: Be sure to be genuine when doing this. There is no bigger turn off than someone who is fake and is trying to find favor in the interviewer's eyes. If you are not genuinely interested in the topic, don't bring it up. Jobs on LinkedIn is a great resource to learn the current needs of employers in any particular industry. You may even be able to create a new position for yourself by better understanding the problems that employers are really aiming to resolve. A listener is interested in learning how to apply their skills in another industry as a consultant. How can LinkedIn help with this? You can do a PEOPLE search and add our title (or any title that you could 'wear'), or any other term that can match your areas of expertise. Once the results populate, you can sort by industry to better see how your skills can be applied in other industries.   Here's How To Really Take This To The Next Level: Find a particular person who has the keywords you are searching for in their profile. Identify one of your 1st connections on LinkedIn who's also connected to this person. Reach out directly to your 1st connection and write something like this: Hey , I see that you are connected with . I'm exploring the possibility of applying my skills in another industry and I see that is doing just that. Would you be able to request for for an information interview with them? It will be no more than 20 minutes. You can assure them that I'm not looking for a job offer.  This can be mutually beneficial as we both share similar skills sets. Don't Ask To Pick Their Brain! Because: If you picture actually picking someone's brain... It's gross. It sounds very self-serving. I'm going to pick through your brain and take what appears useful and helpful to me. Then I"ll try to sew back up nicely and cause you only minimal damage. This also indicates that you are asking to take the hard-earned lessons, experience, and knowledge of your interviewee and call it your own. Some of these took months or years to acquire and you are simply asking for a handout. This doesn't mean that people won't share. Generally, people are excited to share all of this with you. Especially if they are really about the topic or field you are discussing. It's just a matter of presenting it to them in the right light.   Can I Have 15 Minutes Of Your Time? NO!!! That is also focused on what I can get from you. If the person is really so important to you and you really want the opportunity to speak with him/her, then you need to invest 15 minutes of your own time to explain what they will gain from the conversation. At the very least, you need to explain the purpose of the conversation.   There Is A Better Way Give some background information about yourself and explain what you intend to get out of the conversation. If it can be mutually beneficial, then explain how and why. If it won't be, then don't lie and say it will be. That is wrong. It also is a terrible way to start a relationship.    Can You Make Real Friends On LinkedIn? If you can make friends at work, then you can make friends on LinkedIn too. People forget that connections on LinkedIn are REAL PEOPLE. They forget to treat them that way. Therefore, to the extent that you treat your connections as genuine people, will you created and develop deep, meaningful and lasting relationships. Viveka shares how she found her current business associates at The Vengresso Group through LinkedIn. This can really work if we understand that we are connecting with real people that we may want to work in the future.   The Formation of Vengresso Viveka shares how she constantly found herself competing with the same people for the same speaking and consulting gigs. So instead of underbidding each other and all losing money, they teamed up and formed Vengresso. In the newly formed entity, they were each assigned a position in the company that best matched their previous skills, experience, and passion. Thus a group of competing and highly competitive professionals converged into a dynamic company reflecting all of their strengths.   (LinkedIn) Video; Embrace It We all know that the printed resume is dead. Yep, I said it. It's dead. You may still be expected to bring it with you to an interview and email it to a prospective boss, however, it's dead. A paper resume simply doesn't accurately convey who you really are and what you can potentially bring to an organization. It's static and can be easily manipulated to reflect whatever impression you intend to create. Video is real. Sure you can edit a video and make it look really nice. But that's like makeup, it can enhance the way you look, however, you still are you on camera and your facial and body language tell a complete story than a printed resume would.   4 Practical Ways To Use Video LinkedIn Video - Be yourself and share your professional knowledge with your connections. Let them know who you really are. Let them understand what makes you tick and share your professional passions with them. Most of all, provide value through your content. YouTube Resume - Create a short video that can be done with your cell phone. Your goal of this video is to simply share how you are unique and what you offer professionally. OneMob - video email. A very affordable tool that is used to create short email videos to share with prospects and clients Zoom - This tool really helps us connect face to face with people without the hurdle of all the tech. It just works. You may have been frustrated with challenges of Skype or the expense of some of the other platforms. Zoom just gets it done and packages start for FREE!!   Why Are We Terrified Of Video? Have you ever walked around randomly recording friends or family with your new phone? 'I'm just seeing how it works'. This usually does not go over very well. Why does this really annoy people? What's the big deal if someone is holding a camera and recording what we are doing? I think this just shows how powerful the video really is. Seeing is believing. That's why when we see something in video, we know that it's real and we know that we are getting to know the real person and the real concept. This is why we love live video too. Then we know that there are no tweaks happening and we are getting the real scoop. We feel like we are there. Use this tool and accept that you will not be perfect the first few times you try this out. You may not even be good at all. But practice makes perfect. All you need to do is forget that it's being recorded. There are no skills that you need to learn. You already live your life every day naturally. You just need to learn to do the same thing even in front of the camera. You can do this!   Know Your Elevator Speech You will inevitably be in situations where you will be asked, 'so what do you do?'. BE PREPARED TO ANSWER THIS PROPERLY. This is your chance to shine. Someone is actually asking you what you do and trying to understand how you fit into their picture of the world. Use this opportunity to the max.   Vengresso Elevator Speech Vengresso helps B2B companies reach the 90% of buyers that cannot be reached through the traditional outreach. We provide digital sales strategies and tools including personal branding, social selling and content for sale. Now that's an elevator speech. Clear and full. It will take some time and several iterations before you speech may look that way. And that's ok. The main thing is that you don't stumble and say something stupid like I'm in healthcare or in technology. That is not helpful to you or the person that is really trying to understand who you really are.   Resources, Links, and Books Recommendations Episode 008  With Bob Burg Social Media Marketing World  Vengresso on YouTube Follow Viveka Online! Who is Nachum? Nachum is originally from Passaic New Jersey and is not living with his family in Ramat Beit Shemesh, Israel. After dropping out of high school and enrolling himself in Bergen Community College and eventually found his way to Israel. Upon returning to the states, Nachum started a promotional products company. After Nachum's first high tech company failed, and they witnessed the tragedy of 9/11/01, Nachum moved his family to Israel where he ran several businesses that eventually led him into the world of podcasting, writing and business consulting.   Business Opportunity Identified :) As the podcast and book started gaining popularity, the requests on Nachum's time started increasing as well. It became tacky when friends would ask for his time (for free of course) and he'd have to explain that he now charged $200/hr for his time (still a great deal). This became even more frustrating with all the emails back and forth trying to nail down a time that worked for both Nachum and the paying client. There had to be a better way to do this. When Nachum received another request complaint from a massage therapist experiencing similar challenges, he new there was a real need for a solution. She complained that she was looking for a really simple site. She only wanted to list her basic packages, their prices and simple way to reserve a slot and pay.   The Solution Hence, BookLikeABoss was born. Nachum found a friend who was a programmer Dovid Yudkowitz and was later joined by the 3rd partner Lloyd Schroeder. To date, the company has over 9,000 users in over 50 countries and continues to grow.

In this experimental episode, I am joined by Jason Herzberger, host of the Small Moves Podcast. We had a great job discussing the corporate world in comparison to the small business life. The Four Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss came up a few times which is a must read for finding the work that suits you.        • It is ridiculous to wait to enjoy life until we are retiring after 65 or later for many reasons. • Many people are not able to enjoy the finer things in life once they reach that health due to health reasons. • That is way too long to wait to begin enjoying life. I want to enjoy the journey until we get here. Life is now. • We discuss the challenge of the corporate micromanaged environment vs. a standalone company without all the extra business/red tape to take up lots of time. • For high level managers: When you are presented with an urgent decision which should be made by someone else (and probably is not as urgent as it was presented to you) , purposely ignore it for 24 hours. Usually they will figure it out without you and the urgency is over. –Tim Ferriss in The Four Hour Workweek • Don’t offer yourself up as the sacrificial lamb and the problems will work themselves out. – Tim Ferriss • For managers: Allow your team to do what they were hired to do and don’t do it for them. • In some corporate cultures as long as you keep your head down and out of the way, your are ok. However, once you stick out, problems can occur. As opposed to a startup where your mistake can affect the end users directly and you are really involved in the process of solving the problem the company was created to solve. • The regular corporate jobs are great for many many people even if they can grow to higher level on their own. This is the category where most employees will fall. They’d prefer to know that their check comes every 2 weeks and their insurance and health benefits will be there regardless of how the company is doing. Additionally, they want to be able to leave the office at 5 and not have to think about it until they come back. ◦ There is no right and wrong here, it’s a matter of preference and where you are in life and what you want out of it. So go and think about what it is that you really want out of your life and see what’s best for you. Jason Asks • Jason asks: What is a recent purchase that you made under $100 that made a significant impact on my life? • My answer: Kevin Kruse’s book 15 Secrets Successful People Know About Time Management. This really helped get back my job at one point and has really changed the way I deal with time. Action Item • Journaling – If it’s a life worth living, then it’s a life worth recording.
