Welcome to an audio-led edition of Unmade. Today we talk to one of the world's most celebrated advertising creatives, Sir John Hegarty.Further down, the Unmade Index lifts back towards 500 points, but Seven West Media slumps back to its four-year low.If you've been thinking about upgrading to an Unmade membership, this is the perfect time. Your membership includes:* Member-only pricing for our HumAIn and REmade (October 1) conferences;* A complimentary invitation to Unmade's Compass event (November);* Member-only content and our paywalled archives;* Your own copy of Media Unmade‘Take off those f*****g headphones' - Sir John Hegarty on why creatives need to stay connected to the worldAd agency BBH is among the most significant advertising agencies of the last half century. It may never quite have opened its doors in Australia - the closest it came was Singapore - but its local influence on advertising is still remarkable with many of its alumni having built agencies locally.Created four decades ago by John Bartle, Nigle Bogle and John Hegarty, BBH is now owned by Publicis.Sir John Hegarty - who also cofounded Saatchi & Saatchi and TBWA - is behind some of BBH's most celebrated ads. In February he'll be coming to Australia as part of his Business of Creativity course. In this wide ranging conversation with Unmade's Tim Burrowes, Sir John discusses the sliding doors moment early in his career as an art director when he ended up paired with copywriter Charles Saatchi; how a black sheep came to define his career; and the nature of creativity. He also explains his provocative premise that the reason why Sydney is not a great creative hub is because the weather is too good. "A lot of creativity comes out of struggle. You can't sit outside a lovely beach bar and have a beer. You've got to go in and have an idea.”Sir John also argues that the only way for creatives to stay relevant is to stay in touch not just with culture, but with their surroundings. “If you're a creative person, please, will you take those f*****g headphones off? Great creative people are absorbers. They absorb things around them all the time.”He also tackles the separation of media from creative agencies: “one of the greatest mistakes our industry made”.And he shares the anecdote of how his second thoughts about a weak campaign his agency had already sold in, became the acclaimed “Cream of Manchester” ad for beer brand Boddingtons.Further links:* Business of Creativity* Training Day:* The Stormtrooper Scandal* Apple TV: Stones in Exile* Disney+: The Beatles: Get Back* Hegarty on Creativity: There are No Rules* Leonardo Da Vinci by Walter Isaacson* Backstory book subscriptionToday's podcast was edited by Abe's Audio. If you're interested in retail media, don't forget that earlybird tickets are now on sale for the next edition of REmade on October 1. This is a book about honoring rest in a society that values productivity as a way to express your worth. About this week's guest Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith is a Board-Certified internal medicine physician, speaker, and award-winning author. She is an international well-being thought-leader featured in numerous media outlets including Prevention, MSNBC, Women's Day, FOX, Fast Company, Psychology Today, INC, CNN Health, and TED.com. She is the author of numerous books including her bestseller Sacred Rest: Recover Your Life, Renew Your Energy, Restore Your Sanity, including insight on the seven types of rest needed to optimize your productivity, increase your overall happiness, overcome burnout, and live your best life. Over 250,000 people have discovered their personal rest deficits using her free assessment at RestQuiz.com. Share this with a friend for whom you would have to make her rest sacred and part of her daily habit. Highlights Courage: It takes courage to understand where you are so that you can better understand the particular rest that you need and then to honor this place. You also get to see who is pouring into you or pulling from you Creativity: There is also a need for creative rest. This is the kind of rest we experience when we allow ourselves to appreciate beauty in whatever form. By the consumption of that beauty, it awakens that inspiration inside of you and it awakens your own creativity. Curiosity: Seek significant information. Be very specific in defining what's tired. Are you tired of dealing with other people? Are you tired of having to think? Are you tired of having to remember stuff? Or is your body achy? Signs: What are the signs and symptoms of the kind of tired you are experiencing? If you can start narrowing down what the signs and symptoms of that are, you're going to be more likely to come up with a solution that's going to help that problem. Emotional rest: Very often we are masking our emotions or trying to keep them under tabs. We can just keep acting as if things don't affect us, and we're carrying a lot of emotional labor. Therefore, we have allow ourselves to be very real, open and authentic about what we are feeling. Honor: Just the ability to be authentic, and expressing those emotions begins that restful process. You can do it on a journal and honor where you're at. Acceptance: At the very core of rest is a restorative process. How do we make it better than where it's at? But there has to be that recognizing where you're at and evaluating your current state without any judgment. Burnout: The toxicity of that emotional labor will become so heavy that it starts feeling debilitating. Rest: The 7 types of rest include physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, social, sensory, and creative. Social rest: Social rest looks at our relationships. Are they pulling from us or are they pouring back into us? Take a look at the people in our lives that are actively pouring back into us that are life-giving. Make sure some of your relationships are pouring back into you. Physical rest: This involves dealing with the physical body such as passive things like sleeping and napping, as well as active physical rest like massage therapy, or using a foam roller or going for a leisure walk. Spiritual rest: If you're a person of faith, that could be your relationship with God. If you don't have a faith based system, that could look like communities you're in. Mental rest: If you are struggling with clearing your mind, you could have a mental rest deficit. You need to learn how to focus again and clear that mental clutter. Sensory rest: Most of us have a lot of sensory input we're not even aware of (the lights, the sounds, the smells around the place that you work, and that you spend most of your day). You have to be aware of the sensory inputs in your environment as well as how you are responding to them if they're actually affecting your overall personality. Zoom fatigue: The number one rest deficit used to be mental rest. But during the pandemic, there was an increase in the number of virtual meetings. Every little screen has his own little visual input that you're analyzing, which you normally would not even think about. Stress: There's an extra stress that comes with Zoom meetings because you lose the power of presence and you lose the ability to evaluate that the way you normally would if you gave that same presentation in the room. Evaluate: If you are feeling like some part of you is not at its optimal best, then you need to evaluate that and then to make some decisions on how to improve that. Sleep: There's a place when things like a prescription drug or a glass of wine are needed but you don't like them to become your normal. Sleep isn't the only type of rest. However, rest is often the pathway to good sleep. Sleep cycle: There are multiple stages of sleep. Stage 1 is the non-REM sleep. The restorative aspect of sleep is Stage 3 where you're soundly asleep. Deep sleep: As long as your brain keeps rehashing the same thought, it will keep you from actually going into those deeper levels of sleep. Have some strategies in place for how you're going to help the brain release it including mindfulness and the brain dump. Stillness: It's when you allow yourself to honor rest. We put more value in the busy and in the doing and the movement. We have gotten to a place where we don't honor our need to just be still. What was your first memory of being sold to or just witnessing a sale? For me, it was accompanying my dad to liquor stores who was transacting as a sales professional for over 40 years. This week's guest, Jason Marc Campbell, is the author of Selling with Love: Earn with Integrity and Expand your Impact. He is on a mission to inspire small business owners with sales reluctance to embrace it as a beautiful activity that transforms lives. He also interviews thought leaders from around the world on topics of leadership, team building, communication, productivity and so much more. If you are new to entrepreneurship or self-employment, or even if you have an upcoming job interview, be sure to listen to Jason's message. Ultimately, it really does require you to believe in what you have to sell. In this conversation, Jason walks us through the five loves of sales. He also shares his first memory of selling with love as well as what's integral to this entire profession that is present in the world's best sales professionals. This idea of selling yourself is so critical whether you're working for a multinational organization, or out of this great resignation, you have decided to take a chance on yourself, your skills, and your talents. And even if you're not a sales professional with a job title, we're all selling and looking to influence one another. Should you have any questions pertaining to the launch of your online business, or pertaining to the launch of a podcast, I am here to support you as a mentor, guide, and coach. Oftentimes, the hesitation comes from just not having someone to help you through the process. See me as someone who can help you really come up with the right roadmap so that your online business, coaching practice, or podcast can absolutely flourish and give you the security that you need. Share this episode with someone who's a brand new sales professional, business owner, or someone who's out there on the job market. Jason Marc Campbell's Biography Jason Marc Campbell is a public speaker who has shared the stage with the likes of Gary V, Jason Silva, Vishen Lakhiani, Lisa Nichols, and more. Jason has spoken at events by Hubspot, Inc Magazine, and A-Fest. He has worked for Mindvalley, a personal growth ed-tech company, for seven years. He's been responsible for million-dollar product launches, handling the PR for a New York Times best-selling book, launching the very first membership platforms, selling one-month-long events, and bringing in top-level authors to be published by the company. His mission is all about teaching companies to care more. As businesses have so much power in the capitalist world, Jason believes that if we can educate businesses to take on more responsibility for how they sell, how they market, how they treat their employees, and even how they invest their money, we start shifting the very planet into a better place for all. Highlights Courage: There are a lot of things that are outside of your control. And sometimes it is a matter of co-creation. Do everything in your power to deliver on a promise. Creativity: There's a lot of room for creativity when it comes to making the product unbelievable. Be innovative in delighting your client with the impact you're going to give in mind. Curiosity: Ask for feedback on how you can improve your product or service. Selling with love: There's a different way to look at selling that is aligned with your values. The key is to sell with love. Energy: Selling is nothing more than an energy exchange between conscious beings, and money is nothing more than stored energy. And when you know what you offer is so much more than what you ask in return, it becomes an act of love. Knowing: You need to know the buyer and what actual difference it is what you're going to sell are going to make in their lives. The inner sense of knowing comes from just being more attentive, more responsible, and more caring about everything that's responsible for the sale. Intentions: You get into things with the best of intentions. And to ensure that you deliver on the promise that you've given, you start by doing your best. Loving the impact: You have to know what kind of impact you want to have on your buyers. Loving the buyer: Once you know the impact you want to make, start loving the buyer. Take the time to know who you're selling to, the problems they're facing, and how to start finding solutions that will take those problems away. Loving the product: Be clear on the product and make it the best possible. Loving the process of selling: This is about all the things you would do to prepare for an interview, design a website, build your company, do your social media, personal branding, sales techniques, closing scripts, all those things fall into the process of selling. Trust: If you're able to explain whatever hiccup that happens with integrity to your customers, they are going to become one of your best customers because they will trust that you're going to do what is necessary to make things right. Vulnerability: Sales is a mechanism that puts you in a state of vulnerability because every fear you have will come up. At the end of the day, it comes down to self-love. Shame and guilt: There's a lot of shame and guilt that comes from selling and they're an indicator that something needs to change (ex. Fix the product, make a better offer, etc.) Trauma: Most of the shame and guilt feelings come from traumas and past experiences, either a direct or a third-party experience in sales that we look at, and it didn't feel good. So every time you sell subconsciously, you're stepping into a role that you do not want to associate with Model: Investigate what are the role models and ideas that you label for salespeople, and start looking at the people you look up to the most in the world. Inspiration: Every single person that you look up to that is influential is a salesperson. And so an identity that you choose when you sell can be much more powerful than the identities that hold you back from selling. Follow-up: Data around professional salespeople show how little salespeople follow up and this trauma holds us back from getting the attention and earning the trust of people. Rejection: It's a lot more soothing to live in the potentiality of a yes than the absolution of a no. When you ask questions and you sell, you take away the mystery but a lot of those might be no's and that's okay. Fear-Pride Paradox: There's a huge proportion of people in the sales industry who have mental health issues manifested in things like addiction issues, drinking, alcohol, sex, and gambling. There's an inner numbing that you're seeking to do because you don't want to face the reality of every sale that you make. So you need to distract yourself. Rational sabotage: When we decide to just vomit all the facts and information on the buyer, that's because we're so afraid of that responsibility that we're going to give it to the buyer. Responsibility: Selling with love involves taking leadership and taking responsibility, but knowing that you've done the best you can to ensure that the chance of success is going to be the best possible. Foundation: Love has always been at the foundation of the greatest salespeople in the world. For every sale they make, they know there's a ripple effect of positivity that comes across the world. Adam Stoker has been in marketing now since 2007. In 2012, he got his first experience in marketing for tourism destinations. From that point forward, he knew he had found his passion. Since then, Adam has worked with destinations across the country to improve their marketing, branding, and use of technology. He is the President and CEO of an advertising agency focused on marketing for tourism destinations. It’s called Relic, and it’s in Provo, Utah. Adam started the Destination Marketing Podcast in May of 2019. After having so many amazing guests come on the show and share their knowledge, he realized he needed to curate all of that content into a book. This is his first time doing something like that and he’s really proud of it. Adam’s hope is to release a new edition every year, as the industry is always changing. He is a father of four and married to the girl of his dreams. Without their support, this never would have been possible. Adam lives in Salem, Utah. Destination on the Left is joined by Adam Stoker, the President and CEO of Relic, an advertising agency in Provo, Utah that specializes in destination marketing. On our podcast, Adam talks about the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the tourism industry as a whole. He shares examples of creative marketing that has helped destinations stand out at this time. And he also explains what destination marketers can do to reach the right audiences at the right time during reopening travel. What You Will Learn in This Episode: Adam’s journey into travel and tourism How starting his career during the Great Recession prepared him to deal with the COVID-crisis Brands that have done an amazing job using creativity and collaboration to stand out from the crowd The impact of crisis on creativity in the world of destination marketing How Adam’s agency has used creativity to overcome recent challenges How Adam helped his clients navigate the unique obstacles presented by the pandemic What Adam’s team came up with to help clients stay top of mind in a socially responsible way How Relic approached its clients’ recovery campaigns How to access Adam’s worksheet to create a plan and implement the changes Marketing for Post-Lockdown Travel Adam Stoker is the President and CEO of Relic, an advertising agency in Provo, Utah that specializes in destination marketing. He is also the host of the Destination Marketing Podcast, where he interviews industry experts from a wide range of tourism focuses. On our podcast, Adam joins us to talk about the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the tourism industry as a whole. He shares examples of creative marketing that has helped destinations stand out during this crisis. And he also explains what destination marketers can do to reach the right audiences at the right time in the reopening travel market. A Resurgence of Creativity There is a whole generation of people in the destination marketing industry that has not lived through a crisis. Adam’s journey into the travel and tourism industry started at the beginning of the great recession, and it ended up being a blessing in disguise. Learning how to navigate a crisis is going to benefit you for the rest of your career because challenges will continue to arise. Ten years of sustainable growth has devalued creativity in the travel and tourism industry, but this crisis has forced brands to find new ways to stand out from the crowd. DMOs generally operate within a small geographic area with similar features to their competitors, so it is important to move past the first idea at the brainstorming session. From Oregon’s animated campaign to Nebraska’s “Nebraska is Not for Everyone” campaign, there is a lot of good stuff out there right now. Backs Against the Wall Times of crisis produce some of the greatest challenges DMOs will ever have to overcome. But when our backs are against the wall, we inevitably do some of our very best work. Since every single one of Adam’s clients was facing similar struggles as a result of the pandemic, the first thing on the agenda was to create temporary destination messages to keep them top of mind. The next step was to help clients create their recovery campaigns, which for many of them would be the difference between having a job or not having a job when everything is all said and done. Adam’s team produced some of the greatest work they have ever done during that time, and it will have a significant impact on their clients moving forward. Download In this episode, Kyle and Joe host Rebecca Ann Hill and David Jay Brown, Authors of the book, Women of Visionary Art. The book showcases the work and inspiration of female artists such as Josephine Wall, Allison Grey, Amanda Sage, Martina Hoffman, Carolyn Mary Kleefeld and many others. 3 Key Points: Rebecca Ann Hill and David Jay Brown are co-authors of the book, Women of Visionary Art, which includes discussions with 18 female artists. The book and the episode are an exploration of the role that dreaming, psychedelic experiences, and mystical visions play in visionary art. There is a strong need for a balancing of masculine and feminine energies. Females tend to be more nurturing and more cooperative, and it's exactly the factors that are missing in our current world and are causing problems of greed. Navigating Psychedelics Show Notes About David David’s background is in Psychobiology, the interface between psychology and biology He spent 10-15 years working in neuroscience and research labs His interest in Neuroscience came from his experience as a teenager, experimenting with psychedelics He wrote his first book, The Science of Psychedelics, about 10 years ago David mentions that the psychedelic renaissance has allowed him to write openly about psychedelic topics that he’s been preparing his whole life researching for About Rebecca aka Molly Moon Sparkles She has a huge creative drive She is currently studying psychology and is playing in the art program She is fascinated by entheogens, plant medicines and psychedelic compounds She is a painter and is working on the Molly Moon Magick Series that focuses on the divine feminine She wrote and illustrated the book Ecstatic Love, Lost Dreams and Mystic Visions Psychedelics and Creativity There is strong evidence that psychedelics improve creativity Music, art, technology, so many great things are influenced by psychedelics Putting the Book Together David was so fascinated with the visions he would see on psychedelics and wished that he had the talent to portray it through artwork, and then he began to see artists bring these visions to life He also saw a lot of gender inequality, that there were more men than women in the visionary art space It urged him to highlight the under recognized women in visionary art Rebecca was experimenting with other realms with plant medicines and psychedelic compounds She says her consciousness was so drastically different from any other time in her life, and she started painting her psychedelic experiences This led her to begin building community with other artists who shared the same ‘vision’ as her She said that the psychedelic experience has so much feminine nature to it that wasn't being voiced “We are going through a serious ecological crisis right now and the teachings behind the psychedelic experience is to heal the collective and help climate change” - Rebecca Stanley Krippner conducted a survey of artists and psychedelics The Imbalance of Masculine and Feminine There is an uprising of feminism with the “Me Too” movement, women in congress, women’s marches Our species has been so dominated by men and we need the nurturing and caring aspects of the feminine perspective Surprising Aspects of the Women The most surprising aspect is how much in common the women had David says it was beautiful how well each artist was connected to each other through their stories Laura Holden is completely self taught There were two women from the book that had never touched a psychedelic substance They were inspired through dreams and daydreams The psychedelic experience not only inspires the artwork, but it creates a new way of viewing artwork Kyle mentions that he always wished he could record his dreams Joe says he has been seeing research around capturing visual or imagined imagery Discovering the Artists David discovered most of the artists that he had not previously known through the community Rebecca had been a part of as visionary artists COSM and Entheon August 3rd, Rebecca and David are giving a presentation as COSM in New York Entheon, the Sanctuary for Visual art may be open by them Entheon will have workshops, painting classes, rooms to stay in, full moon ceremonies, etc. It will be an art sanctuary, a church with a spiritual and psychedelic essence Visionary art is getting into museums and becoming a recognized art form The Desperate Need for Balance Terrence McKenna told David that early on in human civilization, men didn't understand the role that sex had in creating babies The power of reproduction was within women and sex was something else Once men began thinking that they were responsible for the generation of life, they starting saying its “my baby” its “my wife” instead of ‘our’ baby or the community’s baby. It kept developing into “my child” into “my country”, “MY”. Then people started using less psychedelics and started consuming more alcohol and now everything is an over exaggerated male dominance “Females tend to be more nurturing and more cooperative, and it's exactly the factors that are missing in our current world and are causing problems of greed. It could be balanced and harmonized with more feminine energy.” - David There is a crucial imbalance from male and female in history alone But more than an imbalance between just males and females, it's about an imbalance of masculine and feminine energies Each of us, male and females have both a masculine and feminine energy We can see the masculine and feminine imbalance in the world and our planet right now. We don't need to shift to a goddess worshiping planet, but we just need to be back in balance and bring more feminine energy of nurturing and compassion and caring and healing Penny (an artist highlighted in the book) mentions about Sandos giving LSD to researchers who gave it to artists Getting Involved “If you want to get involved in painting, dancing, making jewelry, clothing, gardening, don't wait. Do it. If you are true to yourself and your own inner visions, you will succeed” - Rebecca One thing all artists have in common is fear and insecurity, so you can't let it hinder you from beginning Final Thoughts Artists like Android Jones are doing visionary artwork in virtual reality mediums David thinks visionary artwork will become only even more interactive and immersive spaces We need to find a more yin-yang balance between masculine and feminine Links Women of Visionary Art (Amazon) Women of Visionary Art (Inner Traditions) David’s Site Rebecca’s Site MollyMoonSparkle blog About Rebecca Rebecca Ann Hill (AKA Molly Moon Sparkle), is a visual artist with a wide range of experience in different creative mediums. Who Is Neil Patel? Neil Patel is a New York Times bestselling author. The Wall Street Journal calls him a top influencer on the web, Forbes says he is one of the top 10 marketers, and Entrepreneur Magazine says he created one of the 100 most brilliant companies. He was recognized as a top 100 entrepreneur under the age of 30 by President Obama and a top 100 entrepreneur under the age of 35 by the United Nations. The Dream Neil started trying to find a six-figure job online. Seeing that they were hard to come by, he notices that Monster.com was a publicly traded company that was doing millions in revenue. So he decided to replicate a similar job board himself called AdviceMonekey.com and waited for the money to start flowing in. You Need To Attract Traffic To Your Site That's when Neil realized that the best site still needs really strong marketing behind it, to drive traffic to the site. After hiring and being ripped off by several expensive marketing firms, Neil decided that it was time to learn this stuff himself. Once he realized that he was really good at marketing and was doing well himself, Neil started doing this full time for others too. Did you benefit from your College education? College didn't really help me at all, it slowed me down. I'm learning more now by jumping right into entrepreneurship. 73% of all college graduates are not working in an area related to their degree within 10 years of graduating. That means that your degree will probably not be the way you earn your livelihood for most of your life! The notion that baby boomers have been pushing on their children that a great education and lots of hard work will guarantee your success in the business world is no longer relevant or true. Today's market is constantly changing with each new technological advance and yesterday's knowledge is no longer relevant. Employers care more about employees soft skills than their formal education. They want to be able to train new team members quickly to work their way and fit into the company culture. Marketing Today Marketing now is a multi-channel approach. Whereas in the past your goal was basically to rank well on search engines, nowadays, you will need to do well in lots of other areas too to ensure success. Because the markets are so much more competitive and saturated, you need to focus on multiple levels and do them or well in order to be successful. These channels include: Organic search Paid search Social media Podcasting Respond and genuinely care about your customers (you can't fake authenticity) Videos Create a brand and connection with your audience Using all of these channels successfully will make you successful. Easier said than done though. Online Marketing School Marketing School brings you 10 minutes of actionable marketing advice every single day. Get the right tips to take your business to the next level and get to work right away. The Online Marketing School is co-hosted with Eric Siu where they share really practical tactics that can be immediately implemented into your online marketing plan. Keeping it under 10 minutes means you will get to the beef quickly and get back to your day. "Google and YouTube Are My Mentors". Neil explains that he doesn't have one particular person that serves as his mentor. Instead, the world is full of his mentors. Namely, Google, YouTube and anyone else who shares valuable information online. You can learn from the greatest business minds in the world like Elon Musk online. Best of all, it's free and they are happy and excited to share it with you. No mentor - learn through experience and learning online/ youtube etc. You don't necessarily need a mentor, Google and YouTube are great mentors. You can learn from Elon Musk online too and it's free and you don't even need to know him! 5 Practical Tips To Promote Your Online Content Use BuzzSumo to find keywords and influencers in your industry. View shares numbers for each piece of content. Manually ask them to share your content. This is tedious but it works. You will need to send out hundreds of emails to make this work and you will see people will start sharing your content. less than 30% will share your content. Hunter.io - Great tool to discover email addresses If you want a quick fix, this is not for you. What's separates the top tier marketers from the second tier of online marketers? Creativity - There's is so much competition out there, so you need to think outside of the box. Only those with the best content will ultimately win. Execution - if you have creativity and execution then you're golden. There's no point in all the complex online tools (many of which are free!) if you don't take action. Give away a free tool and collect leads - as opposed to paid ads. This is the way to have an edge up on the competition without having such a strong budget. You need to go out there and execute. There's nothing you can read to help you out. You need to get out there and experience in order to get you there. Follow Neil!
