I have added a new book to my "Must Read" list if you are a podcaster. The first one was Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World by Michael Hyatt. Why? Because he talks about making WOW content. My second must-read book is Will It Fly?: How to Test Your Next Business Idea So You Don't Waste Your Time and Money by Patt Flynn. Why? Because it talks about making sure your product (or in this case a podcast) is going to connect with your audience. My third must-read book is Storyworthy: Engage, Teach, Persuade, and Change Your Life Through the Power of Storytelling This seems somewhat obvious, but someone who is good at storytelling wrote a book that was hard to put down. That's like saying I couldn't stop eating cupcakes from the top cupcake baking chef. It's a book I want to read over and over until the skills in the book are as natural to me as breathing.   Full Show notes at www.schoolofpodcasting.com/691

Love Your 9 to 5

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 11, 2017 62:01

In this experimental episode, I am joined by Jason Herzberger, host of the Small Moves Podcast. We had a great job discussing the corporate world in comparison to the small business life. The Four Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss came up a few times which is a must read for finding the work that suits you.        • It is ridiculous to wait to enjoy life until we are retiring after 65 or later for many reasons. • Many people are not able to enjoy the finer things in life once they reach that health due to health reasons. • That is way too long to wait to begin enjoying life. I want to enjoy the journey until we get here. Life is now. • We discuss the challenge of the corporate micromanaged environment vs. a standalone company without all the extra business/red tape to take up lots of time. • For high level managers: When you are presented with an urgent decision which should be made by someone else (and probably is not as urgent as it was presented to you) , purposely ignore it for 24 hours. Usually they will figure it out without you and the urgency is over. –Tim Ferriss in The Four Hour Workweek • Don’t offer yourself up as the sacrificial lamb and the problems will work themselves out. – Tim Ferriss • For managers: Allow your team to do what they were hired to do and don’t do it for them. • In some corporate cultures as long as you keep your head down and out of the way, your are ok. However, once you stick out, problems can occur. As opposed to a startup where your mistake can affect the end users directly and you are really involved in the process of solving the problem the company was created to solve. • The regular corporate jobs are great for many many people even if they can grow to higher level on their own. This is the category where most employees will fall. They’d prefer to know that their check comes every 2 weeks and their insurance and health benefits will be there regardless of how the company is doing. Additionally, they want to be able to leave the office at 5 and not have to think about it until they come back. ◦ There is no right and wrong here, it’s a matter of preference and where you are in life and what you want out of it. So go and think about what it is that you really want out of your life and see what’s best for you. Jason Asks • Jason asks: What is a recent purchase that you made under $100 that made a significant impact on my life? • My answer: Kevin Kruse’s book 15 Secrets Successful People Know About Time Management. This really helped get back my job at one point and has really changed the way I deal with time. Action Item • Journaling – If it’s a life worth living, then it’s a life worth recording. Write 3 pages every morning in your journal just do a brain dump and you will surprised how this helps organize your thoughts. • Keep a notebook with you at all times. Book Recommendation/Resources • The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich By; Timothy Ferriss • Episode 014 with Kevin Kruse • Will It Fly? 009 | Pat Flynn Shows Us How to Build Relationships to Build Your Business Hello and welcome to today’s episode! I’m thrilled to introduce you to Pat Flynn of The Smart Passive Income Podcast. In today’s episode, Pat tells us all about his first foray into creating software, and how it didn’t go well. It’s a great story to hear because so often we think that successful entrepreneurs never have failures, but we all do. Pat shares 3 typical business practices that we should all avoid when starting in business, and provides better alternatives to these. Most entrepreneurs know who Pat Flynn is. They’re familiar with his amazing podcast, and many are familiar (and have purchased) his courses. Pat regularly provides his audience with incredible content that is full of knowledge, but recently he was asked by Chalene Johnson to speak at her Marketing Impact Academy conference, under the condition that Pat must sell his new podcast course to her audience at the end of his presentation. Pat talks about why this made him uncomfortable and the end result. Building a relationship is the number 1 thing you can do to grow your business, and Pat tells us all about the best ways to do it. Have you been wondering how you can make more sales and serve more people in your business without having to be sleazy? Pat has you covered in this episode! Here are a few things we talked about in this episode: Michelle introduces Pat Flynn the creator of The Smart Passive Income Podcast. Pat shares a great story about how he invested a huge sum of money into building a piece of software and how it ended up failing. They share the three biggest business mistakes to avoid. Pat talks about the times when he was sold something and it didn’t feel good, and how it led him to be apprehensive in selling to his own people. Pat tells the story of how Chalene Johnson invited him to speak at her event and how he originally turned her down, and why. Pat talks about how many people need to actually invest money, in order to follow-through and be successful. Pat stresses how important it is to connect with people and build a rapport with them. Michelle and Pat chat about action and accountability. We’re all programmed to listen to stories. Provide proof to your audience. When you say YES to something, you have to think about what you’re actually saying NO to. Saying NO can be empowering! Pat shares what he would say to his younger self.
