The Whitecaps moved up to second in the MLS West with a dramatic late derby day victory over Portland Timbers on Saturday. We pick over the bones of that one and the good, the bad, and the ugly aspects coming out of it. We also hear from both head coaches, Vanni Sartini and Phil Neville, while Vanni chats to us about liking watching matches from the stands and why he might continue with that, even though his touchline ban is over. We also chat with two of Portland's Canadian men's national team players, Kamal Miller and Maxime Crepeau about their moves to the Timbers and Canada's qualification for Copa America. Plus we look around the weekend's action in the MLS West and Vanni shares his thoughts on what he's seen from the conference so far. In this episode (number 90!!), I share an enlightening conversation with the creators of the "RoboDoc" series - a comprehensive documentary on the iconic sci-fi film, RoboCop. The team includes directors Chris Griffith and Eastwood Allen, and producer Gary Smart. The trio talks in-depth about how they transformed their passion project into a widely acclaimed series over several years. They reveal that their journey was far from smooth, battling legal issues, budget constraints, and meeting stringent fair-use criteria, among other challenges. Their tenacity to produce a series that deeply analyses every scene of the cult classic is ultimately what led to the final output. The documentary features over 100 interviews with cast, writers, producers, special effects designers and countless crew members of the Robocop universe to provide fans with an incredibly detailed and insightful look into this much-loved franchise. The creators finally discuss distribution, the importance of physical media, and their hopes for future projects. In the meantime “stay out of trouble”...ROBODOC: The Creation of RoboCop. Before Leigh Whannell reimagined The Invisible Man to great acclaim, Paul Verhoven and Kevin Bacon took a stab at it with their 2000 sci-fi/thriller, "Hollow Man." Paul Verhoeven is maybe the king of the cult classic, and Starship Troopers is perhaps the most self aware of his blockbusters. A movie that was misunderstood when it was released, it later gained a large cult following that was strong enough to spawn multiple sequels, video games, and even animated movies. This week: a double-dip of cop flicks to match our current times. Up first is a discussion of how Verhoven's infamous 1987 satire fails to rise to our very specific circumstances, after all, if the man could predict so much of what policing would become in 1987, how did he manage to not do anything about it? In much more detail, our duo gets into David Fincher's sick and twisted SE7EN, a move that Aya had somehow avoided seeing until now. Is it a swing or a miss for our number one Fincher stan? Our wild ride through the prophecy laden science fiction of the 1980s continues, bringing us to the meanest possible streets of old Detroit. With it's avalanche of bravado, social commentary and wit, the undeniable classic Robocop is ripe for another installment, even today. But how does the 2014 remake stack up against the OG Robo, and what does it offer in the dialogue about corporate ethics, gentrification and policing, started by the Verhoven original? We get to all that via a dense talk about growing up with the '87 version, and by peeling back those many layers woven by Paul Verhoven, Ed Neumeier, Michael Miner, and company. "Go Robo!" Hi! Welcome back to Castology. So good to see you! Pull up a chair and listen to this week's mixed back of recommendations from your friendly neighbourhood Castologists. Patrick brings a bit of Neil Degrasse Tyson to the table with StartTalk Radio, Liz picks a podcast purely because Patrick will like the name and recommends crime banter series Loose Units, and Zane takes a step through the scary door with Twilight Zone/Black Mirror-esque The Veil Audio Drama. Then it's on to last week's reviews? Will there be clashes and drama? Maybe! Maybe not also. You will have to listen to find out.Liz Recommends - Loose Unitshttps://looseunitsthepodcast.libsyn.com/Paul F. Verhoven sits down with his dad John to chat all things crime in the 1980s. You see John was a cop in Sydney during the height of police corruption and boy does he have some stories. So Paul put them all into a book. BUT as the show description states: "The true crime book Loose Units, out now through Penguin Publishing (and in bookstores everywhere), had one thing it couldn't do: it couldn't fit everything. So each week, Paul and John will sit down and delve into cases too surreal, brief or contentious to fit into the book."After literally only picking this podcast because she thought resident loose unit Patrick would find the title appealing, she fell in love with it. The banter between father and son is straight up entertaining as hell and almost veers into comedy in some eps. But some are tragic. A good all rounder with lots of crime stories from someone's dad, who always seems to sound cool and funny when he calls someone a fuckwit. For both: I started from the start but each ep is a separate story so just pick the topic that appeals to you.https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/loose-units-the-podcast/id1445344726Pat Recommends - StarTalk Radiohttps://www.startalkradio.net/What's better than interrupting quality family time on father's day to write show notes? The fine line between art and pornography is as old as visual culture itself, but only recently have those within the industry crafted their narratives for large scale audiences by avoiding the old hat critiques often placed on the profession. Cam, a new horror thriller financed by Blumhouse and made by the creative duo of Isa Mazzei and Daniel Goldhaber, does exactly that by following a cam girl as she fights to reclaim her identity. Dan sits down in this long ranging interview to discuss his creative apprenticeships on documentaries and the lessons he learned from Harvard, the work he and Isa did crafting pornography that thought seriously about aesthetics, and the creative workarounds necessary to make a good film about screen life. Finally, the two talk about Showgirls, a tricky film that nonetheless influenced Cam—Peter and Dan examine how and where the film takes these burlesque dancers seriously, and how the film straddles its campy existence. Plus, Carman Tse joins the show to talk about a few restorations that played the recent AFI Film Festival. 0:00-3:10 Opening4:13-27:48 Establishing Shots — Repertory Talk at AFI Fest with Carman Tsse28:33-1:36:45 Deep Focus — Daniel Goldhaber1:38:00-1:42:00 Sponsorship Section1:43:08-1:58:40 Double Exposure — Showgirls (Paul Vehoven)1:58:48-2:00:37 Close / Outtake

"What you are about to see...is a REAL THING!" Indeed. Welcome to this latest episode of Cinepod MovieCast we look at two iconic cult films: Paul Verhoeven's "Showgirls" and John Waters' "Pink Flamingos." This was José's first time seeing the Verhoven film, and it was my first time seeing the Waters film. For me, "Pink Flamingos" had been on my radar for over 20 years, but I avoided it because of what I had heard about the ending. As for José, he gets a bit of insight into how Elizabeth Berkley went from "Saved by the Bell" to a starring role in what had been rumored to be Hollywood's first mainstream soft core porno film. Join us for an experience in cinematic bad taste! -- Chuck
This week we go to Mars, bitches. That's right. Mars with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Total Recall is the target of the pod, so get ready for an episode that is OUT OF THIS WORLD. (Mike, I don't like these new rules that I have to include a dad joke in the blog posts) Set in the year 2084, this Phillip K. Dick inspired movie also stars Rachel Ticotin, Ronny Cox, Michael Ironside and Sharon Stone in hear breakout role. Director Paul Verhoven was so impressed with Stone's ability to go from sweet to murderous psycho, and back again that he cast her in the starring role of his follow up film, Basic Instinct. Verhoven and Schwarzenegger almost crossed paths once before, with Arnold slated to play RoboCop. Due to various issues, he never made it into the film, but he was so impressed with the final product that he wanted to work with him on his next project, and that ended up being Total Recall.
Writer/director Alex Ross Perry (Nostalgia, Golden Exits) returns to Blank Check to discuss 2000’s invisible sci-fi slasher, Hollow Man. But why is this not your grandfather’s invisible man movie? What was the running Joey Slotnick bit on The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn? Does this film lack the satire and point of view of Verhoven’s past movies? Together they discuss the career trajectory of Kevin Bacon, poorly executed Tarantino-esque schoolyard jokes, the original Dark Universe of the 1990s and why this film’s poor reception caused Verhoeven to retreat back to the Netherlands. This episode is sponsored by Serial Box - False Idols and Audible.

A legendary filmmaker and an actress on the rise visit Josh Horowitz for this week’s episode of “Happy Sad Confused”. In the 80s and 90s, Paul Verhoeven’s name was synonymous with Hollywood spectacle and at times, controversy. He directed a trio of acclaimed sci-fi films, Robocop, Total Recall, and Starship Troopers. But he also pushed buttons with sex, violence, and at times with sheer high camp with Basic Instinct and Showgirls. But for many years Verhoven has been making smaller films in Europe, often barely getting any attention in the states. He’s back in a big way with “Elle” (opening November 11th), a tale of yes, sex and violence, that earned a standing ovation in Cannes and widespread critical praise ever since. The filmmaker joins Josh to talk about his new film, why he refuses to censor himself, and what’s been missing in the many sub-par remakes of his films. Later in the show, Josh is joined by a true chameleon of an actor in Naomie Harris. She’s perhaps best known for her roles in 28 Days Later and two giant franchises, the James Bond series, and the Pirates films. But it’s her acclaimed performance in the small but powerful film, “Moonlight” that may prove to be the most important of her career. Harris talks about playing a crack addicted mother in the course of just three days on set and why she didn’t want the part at all at first. Learn more about your ad choices. In a continent dominated by American cinema, it can be easy to forget how essential Toronto is for cinephilia: home of the famed film festival, base of the idiosyncratic magazine Cinema Scope, and the city where critic Adam Nayman has been writing and teaching. Nayman's latest writing opus is It Doesn't Suck, a fantastic book tracing the evolution of Paul Verhoeven's Showgirls from bomb to camp to cult to classic. Peter sits down with Adam to discuss the book, as well as his work for publications like Scope and Reverse Shot, his view of Canadian cinema, and much more. Finally, the two examine the first film from Mia Hansen-Love, All Is Forgiven, and how a film with seemingly little ambition can contain a great depth of feeling. 0:00-1:17 Opening2:13-7:40 Establishing Shots - Blind Detective / Donations and Reviews8:25-59:00 Deep Focus - Adam Nayman59:44-1:09:09 It Doesn't Suck1:21:24-1:41:35 Double Exposure - All Is Forgiven (Mia Hansen-Love)1:41:42-1:43:32 Close / Outtake
