What is biblical joy and what to do when we don't have joy?
What is biblical joy, a definition and an exposition
Skip the fleeting joys of the world that crumble under life's weight. Instead, discover Biblical Joy: a confident assurance, rooted in Christ and empowered by the Gospel. This Joy shields you from despair, grants perspective on pain, and ignites your purpose. Find it by drawing close to Jesus, the source of this unshakeable Joy He gifted through His sacrifice.ABOUT LIVING STREAMSLiving Streams Church exists to be a healthy local church that creatively expands God's kingdom. Biblical joy doesn't mean the absence of pain or sorrow. We often think that to experience joy, we can't feel any loss. Biblical joy that is rooted in who Jesus is gives us permission to feel and process pain. Pastor Seth continues through our teaching series, Advent.
This week, we are beginning a series through the Book of Philippians called A Life of Joy. There are many times the Bible talks of people singing and praising God and even dancing before the Lord. What does this type of joy look like and how do we obtain it in the midst of busy schedules and uncertain times? Thankfully the Bible gives great insight into what true Joy means and John shares principles of achieving biblical joy!

We are wrapping up our Summer of Joy series with Talasi Guerra, author of Joy Like a Mountain. She is a Christian communicator who is passionate about infusing Jesus into her everyday life and empowering others to do the same. Talasi and I talk about the continuous cycle she was stuck in of feeling shame and guilt for making choices that didn't align with her beliefs, and how after a long battle with anorexia and depression, she cried out to God for help. Talasi shares that she didn't feel close to God in that moment, but says “looking back, I can see that He was so near because he heard me and started to get to work.” Talasi shares about what she calls the “joy crisis” and how joylessness effects us. She encourages us to dig in to what the bible says about joy and tells us that when she challenged herself to read about biblical joy every day for a month, reflect on it and apply what she read, her “mind was blown” and she'd “never experienced so much joy.” She tells us that when life feels like a mountain, joy is the tool that help us up and over, but we have to choose to intentionally pursue it. Talasi is committed to bringing light and life to the world around her by sharing her story, speaking truth, and offering hope to others. Talasi and her husband Ryan reside in Western Canada along with their daughters, Avra and Katana, and their massive strategy board game collection. MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE Joy Like a Mountain: Unleash the Power of Biblical Joy on the Journey of Life Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast
Episode Summary: In this episode, Suzie Eller and I discuss some truths that just might change everything you thought you knew about joy. I so relate to my guest today because she has experienced one incredibly painful trial after another, and yet through it, she has come to savor the sweet aroma of her Savior walking with her in those trials. Quotables from the episode: After a year of sorrow, I began to search for biblical joy. I found 6 surprising truths that helped me redefine joy, keep joy, and live joy. Biblical joy isn’t a feeling…it’s a knowing. Biblical joy is tied to God’s goodness over our life. Joy is consciously walking into God’s love and care. We have a choice to make: we can turn away from God or turn to Him. While we may not always be able to “choose joy,” we can choose the SOURCE of our joy. We don’t have to limit ourselves to experience either joy or sorrow, but rather, give ourselves permission to experience joy AND sorrow. God is not disappointed by how we feel. Those feelings are indicators. He not only created us to feel, but cares about how we feel. Know that joy is for you and it’s not tied to your circumstances. Scripture References: John 16:22 NIV Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. John 15:11 NIV I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. Romans 8:27-29 MSG He knows us far better than we know ourselves, knows our pregnant condition, and keeps us present before God. That’s why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God isworked into something good. God knew what he was doing from the very beginning. Talasi and I discuss her journey to biblical joy as a discipline in her life as a result of a long battle with anorexia, depression, and anxiety. She gives us insight into loving someone who is struggling with their mental health, what churches can examine within themselves to make room for those who are struggling, and the hope that we can all have in Jesus during difficult times. Talasi answers questions like... Why has it been so difficult for us as the church to start talking about mental health that affects so many people? How do we use biblical joy to build God's kingdom? What are the steps to biblical joy? Talasi Guerra is a Christian author and communicator who is passionate about infusing Jesus into her everyday life and empowering others to do the same. In addition to writing and speaking, she also has a passion for the local church. Having spent nearly a decade serving as the Director of Children and Family Ministries at a large church in western Canada, Talasi loves developing leaders and setting up ministries to win. She has been involved in training and equipping Christian leaders since 2010. Joy is a powerful feeling. Too many times though we fail to understand just how powerful it can be. Too many times this causes our joy to function as a bubble coming off a bubble wound that pops at the least disturbance. What if joy could be larger and stronger and tougher? What if we could experience joy all the time everywhere? This is a sermon that empowers that to happen.
