In a world consumed by screens and distractions, how do we cultivate a deep, personal relationship with Jesus? In this episode, host Brian Daniel sits down with author and counselor John Eldredge to explore the impact of technology on our spiritual lives and what it truly means to follow Christ in today's culture.John unpacks the essence of discipleship, emphasizing the need for genuine communion with God and the beauty of love in faith. The conversation also tackles the growing challenge of apathy in faith and how understanding our union with Christ can reignite passion and purpose in our spiritual journey. Christianity isn't a spectator sport—it's a radical call to action. In this message, Pastor David takes a deep dive into understanding that the Kingdom of God demands more than mere spectatorship. It's not about feeling good or simply securing a spot in heaven; it's about dying to self and living fully surrendered to Christ.Together we'll unpack how true Christianity is a radical commitment to Christ's ways, contrasting the superficial comforts of modern culture with the transformative power of living like Jesus. Inspired by Dietrich Bonhoeffer, we confront the concept of "cheap grace" and explore what it means to imitate Christ authentically. To learn more about Cross Points, check out our website:http://crosspointschurch.comTo stay up to date, check out our social media:Instagram: @crosspointskcFacebook: Cross Points ChurchYoutube: CrossPointsKCTwitter: @crosspointskc

Who Do You Say That I Am? A Call to Deep Discipleship For hundreds and hundreds of years in the Catholic tradition, . . . . . . well before the image of the rainbow was co-opted for other agendas less connected to the gospel of the Lord, the rainbow set in the sky as a sign of the covenant has long been held to be a symbol of Our Lady. It is not uncommon in some parts of Europe to find stained glass windows or art in churches, which would feature a rainbow with Our Lady enthroned upon the top of it. This image of the bright and glorious rainbow after the flood was seen as a sign of Our Lady assumed into the glory of heaven. Placed on a throne to watch over the people and so that when they looked up and saw her, knowing that they could turn to her for her intercession and to help them come to know the Lord, they were looking at a sure and certain sign that our salvation indeed had been won. Jesus and His Disciples The Gospel passage reflects on a key turning point in the Gospel of Mark, where Jesus begins to shift His focus from public teaching to forming His disciples. The reflection emphasizes that Christian discipleship requires consistent commitment rather than occasional engagement. As Jesus questions His disciples about His identity, Peter declares, “You are the Christ.” However, Jesus instructs them not to share this yet, as their understanding is still incomplete. True knowledge of Christ requires embracing the mystery of the cross. Jesus then reveals His impending suffering, death, and resurrection, which Peter initially resists, prompting Jesus' rebuke: “Get behind me, Satan.” This underscores the contrast between human thinking and God's plan. The passage connects this lesson to Lent, a time for deepening discipleship, self-denial, and embracing the cross as the path to true knowledge of Christ. Listen to this meditation Media. When evangelical christians were asked if everyone born is innocent in the eyes of God, 65% said, "yes". 48% of evangelicals agreed that God learns and adapts to different circumstances, while a staggering 43% agreed that Jesus was a great teacher, but he was not God. With the Bible being more accessible than ever, research shows that Biblical literacy is at an all time low. In today's conversation, you'll hear Jen Wilkin explain how the church can change that! Jen Wilkin is a Bible teacher from Dallas, Texas. An advocate for Bible literacy, she has organized and led studies for women in homes, churches, and parachurch contexts. She as authored multiple Bible studies and books, including the bestseller, "Women of the Word: How to Study the Bible iwth Both Our Hearts and Our Minds.". Brian Daniel and Haley Malone interview Jen Wilkin, and discuss the importance of Bible literacy and the need for a clear understanding of core beliefs. They also explore the evolution of discipleship conversations in the local church and the role of community and learning environments. Jen introduces the concept of Training the Church, which focuses on active, dedicated learning spaces that encompass the Christian story, Christian belief, and Christian formation. In the series conclusion, John, Blaine, and Allen offer stories and insights on how God strengthens his people in times of crisis. One key trend is the growth in deep discipleship. Rather than try to fit a little bit of God into our busy schedules, we must take our life with Jesus seriously by seeking his Kingdom first—and then seeing what else there is room for. That's the only way to remain strong, love well, and stay in union with God as this world grows more chaotic.Show Notes:1) Follow Blaine's Substack writings at https://blaineeldredge.substack.com/2) Find more about the Rule of Life Workbook here.3) The Prayer of Descent document is available here._______________________________________________There is more.Got a question you want answered on the podcast? The 2020 COVID pandemic proved to be a watershed for the entire world. Suddenly, it has become much harder to dismiss fears that a worldwide anti-Christian totalitarianism lurks just over the horizon, and western Christians have new questions. How, for instance, are we to respond to government shutdowns of churches, or live as Christians in a digitized world where governments can follow your every move? And how do Christian parents raise godly children in a world that promotes the grossest forms of immorality to kindergartners? To answer these questions, and more, Vancouver pastor-writer Paul Dirks has just written Deep Discipleship for Dark Days: Holding Fast to What Is Good. You need this book to understand how to survive the coming cataclysm "with your soul secured and your integrity intact." This is the book that will show you how to fight the good fight, keep the faith, and win the prize that God offers at the end (2 Tm 4:7–8). But until Discipleship for Dark Days ships in late October, you can watch an FBB podcast where author Paul Dirks discusses his book's contents. It's time for God's people to become spiritual preppers, and for that nobody can help you more than Paul Dirks.

CFTROU 0175: Developing Theologically Grounded Leaders In this episode, Dr. Mark Warnock, Family Church's Residency Director, and Angel Turbeville, Family Church Village's Campus Director, talk about developing leaders. Theological grounding is more important than ever. In this episode, we examine how people's beliefs can be formed by social media and how delving into theology in isolation can do more harm than good, particularly for those taking up leadership roles. In the face of polarization, followers of Jesus are called to prioritize unity and love. We stress the importance of heart formation, teaching the Bible, and building strong families rooted in the Bible. They also discuss the qualities and qualifications to be a community leader. Tune in for more valuable insights. Key Points From This Episode: Training individuals to start new churches. The need for spiritual development and helping people grow in their faith. The cultural changes and challenges pastors face in the current era of technology and secularization. The impact of social media on the formation of people's beliefs and the necessity of theological grounding. Biblical examples of people who maintained faithfulness to God in hostile cultures. The importance of teaching the Bible. Who should be developed to be leaders, according to the book Deep Discipleship. The role of leaders as undershepherds. The “qualifications” required of leaders, including the immersion in community, and the rejection of isolation. Why it's important for pastors to stay connected with their leaders and continually monitor their character and beliefs. We're in a season culturally where it is so much more important to theologically ground.Click To TweetThe Bible has a lot of examples of people who have lived out faithfulness to God in hostile, unfriendly cultures.Click To TweetLeaders need to immerse themselves so they're not living lives of isolation, they're living lives immersed in the community that they're leading.Click To Tweet Links Mentioned in Today's Episode: Mark on Twitter Angel on Twitter Deep Discipleship by J.T. CFTROU 0167: The Power Of The Neighborhood Church: Finale with J.T. English We are wrapping up our season of exploring the power of the neighborhood church and here with us today to tie it off in a perfect bow is Author and Lead Pastor, J.T. English. After telling us about his spiritual awakening in college and the providential meeting of his wife, J.T. explains how Storyline Church reaches out to and impacts his community. We discuss the differences between preaching in a community where you are known versus one where people don't know you, why it's necessary to create a warm and welcoming environment for those receiving the Word, what some pastors are getting wrong regarding the power potential of neighborhood churches, and how the neighborhood church is contextualized in The Bible. Finally, our guest explores what we as followers of Christ need to know in his book Deep Discipleship, and he describes the basics of discipleship, what it means to lead with discipleship, and what steps new Christians can take to cement their faith in our eternal Savior. Key Points From This Episode:• J.T.'s background, his family, and his ministry in Nevada.• His spiritual awakening in college and the meeting of his wife as a providence of God.• How Storyline Church reaches and impacts his neighborhood.• The difference between pastoring in communities where you're known versus unknown.• How J.T. creates a warm and welcoming environment for people receiving the Word.• What pastors are missing regarding the ideas and potentiality of neighborhood churches.• How the neighborhood church is contextualized in The Bible.• The basics of discipleship according to J.T.• What it means to lead with discipleship.• The steps that our guest encourages new Christians to take.• Diving into J.T.'s book, Deep Discipleship. You have to maintain relationships. As soon as we close relationships off, we can't reach the world. Organic, open relationships allow us to stay connected to the community.Click To TweetPeople are not afraid of commitment; they're afraid of committing to things that don't matter.Click To TweetIf you win them with relevance, you'll lose them to the next relevant thing. The New Year is a natural time to evaluate areas of our lives and make changes for the upcoming year. The most popular changes are always about saving more money, exercising more frequently, and eating healthier, but reflecting on and refocusing our spiritual life doesn't always feel like as high of a priority. But the Parable of the Ten Minas from Luke 19 shows us why our investment in our spiritual life is incredibly important and why a process of evaluating our spiritual life and making changes in the New Year is healthy for our walk with Jesus.
In this episode of We Are Vineyard, Jay talks with Christian Weber about accepting Jesus into her heart at an AG church as a child, the freedom she felt when she walked into a youth group at the Sugar Land Vineyard, and the deep, lasting relationships she developed in that youth group. Christian shares about how she found herself planning events in the nonprofit sector as a teenager, and some of the things the Lord has spoken to her about a call to administration as a life of ministry. They discuss the importance of church staffs pursuing training in team dynamics and emotional awareness, and drop some Easter eggs about the 2023 National Conference coming up next summer in Colorado. Christian Weber is the Events Director and Executive Admin for the National Director. She grew up in the Houston area and started attending the Sugar Land Vineyard church as a teenager, where she first heard the phrases “the now and not yet” and “kingdom theology.”. Through her involvement in that youth group, the Holy Spirit captured her heart and she knew she found a home in the Vineyard. In 2005, Christian began working for Bert Waggoner, National Director for Vineyard USA at the time, as Events Director and Exec Admin, and she has continued to serve in this role for Phil Strout's tenure as National Director through to today. Jesus has given her a heart for the Vineyard and the pastors and leaders she gets to serve. Christian and her husband, Ben, met and married at the Sugar Land Vineyard where he was on staff as the Youth Pastor for about 8 years before becoming an attorney. They have three awesome children, Chloe, Atticus, and Ivy. When they aren't acting as a car service for said kids, they really enjoy concerts and great food! Dave Ramsey? Nope. I'd be Mel Gibson playing William Wallace in the movie Braveheart.FREEEEEEEDOOOOOOOOM!!! -William Wallace, BraveheartToday we're answering the question, “How do I walk in freedom in a world trying to intrap me and contain me and control me?“Opening story:I was listening to the Knowing Faith podcast with Jen Wilkins, Kyle ?, and JT English. They were all asked what book of the Bible they find themselves re-reading a lot and why. JT, author of Deep Discipleship, answered Colossians. He said in effect, it addresses things we're going through today and gives us the answer to the philosophies of this world: the supremacy of Christ. A high Christology is the answer to the “isms” of this world.Would be good to share a story about being entrapped in something of this world like a cult like Mormonism, a conspiracy, false religion like Jehovah Witnesses, Christian nationalism, …Amazingly, when Epaphras visits Paul who then writes this letter about being free in Christ, Paul is physically in prison!Story of a little girl enslaved physically and spiritually that led to a Jailer and his family being freed spiritually. See Acts 16:16-38“Paul recognized that civic freedom did not always equate to authentic liberty.”“Perhaps this understanding of true freedom was most influenced by his experience in Macedonia with Silas (Acts 16:16-38). As they were spreading the gospel, they were harassed by a young girl who was enslaved in every way. Physically, she was a slave to her masters who were exploiting her for financial gain. Spiritually, she was possessed by a demonic spirit who had seized control of her life. By the power of Christ, Paul instantly freed her from both.As a result, Paul and Silas were flogged and imprisoned. The Scriptures vividly describe how they were heavily guarded, thrown into the most secure area of the jail, and their feet were shackled with chains. Yet none of these could restrain their hearts from worshiping. As they expressed their praise to God, an earthquake shook the prison, the doors opened, and their bonds were broken. While others may have fled and sought what they supposed was freedom, Paul and Silas continued to operate in the spiritual liberty they had never lost. Paul reassured the jailer that they had not escaped, and the guard responded with a request for true freedom, salvation in Christ.” -Pace, p. 70-71Paul and Silas, arrested and imprisoned in the most secure dungeon in Philippi, maintained their joyous freedom in Christ despite their outward circumstances. This was because of leading this twice-enslaved girl to freedom in Christ and led others to freedom in Christ as well.Outline: (based on Willmington)Paul WARNS 2 churches against 4 dangerous -ISMS or philosophies that rob us of our freedom in Christ. From railroad crossing signs to skull and crossbones on bottle of rubbing alcohol, we're surrounded by warnings.Children need to be taught to heed these warnings while adults need to be reminded that familiarity breeds contempt. -W WiersbePaul gives us 4 warnings against losing our freedom in Christ. (Based on Willmington's Outline)Gnosticism (8-10)Fiction (8): Gnostics diminish Christ to an angel.Facts (9-10): Christ incarnate was God in bodily form. Because of this, believers should not criticize (aka judge) each other…In matters of diet (16a): Food or drink like alcohol, meat, pork, sugar, caffeine, etc.In matters of days (16b-17): Sabbaths, Halloween, Christmas, Easter, Passover, the liturgical calendar, feasts, etc.Mysticism (18-19) “Let no one disqualify you”Fiction (18): Mysticism teaches that God can be KNOWN through 2 METHODS:Through worship of ANGELS (18a…in addition, myths abound….People DO NOT “get their wings” and become angels at death.Christ was NOT a super angel. HE CREATED angels!Through seeing of VISIONS (18b)Fact (19): One can only know God THROUGH CHRIST, who is the head of the body, the Church.Asceticism (20-23) “let no one enslave you”Fiction (21-22): Asceticism teaches that one can PURIFY the spirit by PUNISHING the body.Facts (20, 23): The spirit cannot be purified by PUNISHING the body. (23)The believer's body and spirit have been CRUCIFIED with Christ. (20)ConclusionBottom line: Walk in freedom in Christ and avoid the dangerous ways of the world apart from Christ by remembering who you are and what Christ has done for you.“Until I first read Colin Urquhart's book, In Christ Jesus, I had never realized how significant that little word “in” is in the New Testament. Understanding that, as a Christian, you are “in” Christ Jesus revolutionizes how you see yourself, your self image, your identity and how you understand your value to God.”“Take out a piece of paper, write your name on a piece of paper. Take hold of your Bible to represent Christ. Place the paper in the book and close it. You are in Christ. Where the book goes you go. Where the paper goes he goes. You are not part of the book, but you are now identified totally with the book.” —Nicky GumbelPrayLord's Supper, 1 Corinthians 11:17-32OtherPace Outline:Bottom line: “Through the power of the gospel and according to our identity in Christ, we have been delivered from the demands of religious performance and are free to live for his glory through loving obedience.”I. He wrote:‘If we are keenly alert and aware of the rock and what we are doing in it, if we are honest with ourselves beyond what we know is safe, then we will climb safely. For climbing is an exercise in reality. He who sees it clearly is on safe ground, regardless of his experience or skill. But he who sees reality as he would like it to be, may have his illusions rudely stripped from his eyes when the ground comes up fast.'This reality is this: ‘In him (Christ) the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,' and him we have been made full (2:9, 10). But we can lose the benefits of that fullness very easily. We can fall to legalism…” -Hughes, p. 292As I reflect on Tim Keller's summary of Larry Hurtado's main points in his book, I see a lot of wisdom to help me lead our church going forward.I learned about this article while having lunch with Neal McGlohon. He summarized the o5 points in a slightly different order . Neal shared it this way:1. The early church was multi-racial and experienced a unity across ethnic boundaries that was startling. (Democrat, Progressive concerns)3. The early church was famous for its hospitality to the poor and the suffering. (Democrat, Progressive concerns)2. The early church was a community of forgiveness and reconciliation. (What both sides thinks it's doing when in fact what we see is fighting for power)4. It was a community committed to the sanctity of life. (Republican; conservative concerns)5. It was a sexual counterculture. How did the early church fathers practice discipleship? What can we learn from them and apply to our lives today? In this episode, Oliver Hersey explores those questions with Pete Scazzero, author of Emotionally Healthy Discipleship: Moving from Shallow Christianity to Deep Transformation In addition to studying the early church Scazzero also studied the gospel of Matthew for years to learn how Jesus discipled the twelve apostles. “The disciples wanted to be popular,” he explains. “They didn't want suffering and failure.” Those temptations and struggles still exist today. But how can Christians reject popularity, and embrace the cross? That's where Scazzero looks to the riches of church history. To develop into people who are deeply changed by God, he suggested we should slow down, follow the crucified Jesus, make space for grief, and measure spiritual maturity by how we're loving others. “Discretion was a quality of abbots in monasteries—the ability to let things unfold,” Scazzero notes. Join Scazzero as he lays out a blueprint for how to let your ministry flow out of your own life with Jesus. Learn more about emotionally healthy discipleship on his website. “Deep Discipleship” Adapted from Chasing the Sage, by Bud LambThe BIG IDEADeep discipleship -- our lifelong process of God conforming us into the image of His Son, leaching out all that needs to go, chiseling out character defects, refining all that remains, and healing our masculine soul. Man, it is a lifelong process! The Bible says...Husbands, love your wives… Ephesians 5:25 NASBTypically God uses marriage to get at those places in me -- those places I try, without success, to hide. This is God's agenda from the get-go, but he will not override our resistance.Sooner or later, when the pain of our disease becomes greater than our fear of the remedy,God begins this deep work in us. It truly is deep discipleship. As a husband, I've been a very slow learner.A year ago last summer, on a three-month road trip with my wife, I slammed into the truth. Yes, I mean the truth that I did not know how to love well. It was so painful, yet cleansing, to say it out loud to me and eventually to Lea Ann.The words I chose were I am having a hard time loving you. I didn't say, You are a hard person to love. The misunderstanding came out of the blue and created a hard few days or weeks until we both came to see that it was a statement about me and not her.The first thing I did was memorize 1 Corinthians 13:4-11.Yes, memorizing this was painfully slow - it took me almost two months to get it down. It became my daily reading and reflection and over time my head became familiar with the rhythm and flow of what is commonly referred to as “The Love Chapter.”More importantly, my heart began to beat, yes, to beat to the rhythm of love.Over the next ten months, via daily reflection and pursuit of learning how to love like Jesus, I began to make micro-movements as I began to become patient, and kind…I came to understand Jesus' teaching on love truly was/is designed by Him to become our way. His Way is to become our way.Everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher. Luke 6:40Jesus' Way is to work on my side of the street, turn the other cheek, go the extra mile, extend forgiveness, see myself as a broken person in need of a Savior and all others the same way. Practice compassion as a style of living. Be generous. The funny thing about this way of navigating love is that loving like this is impossible for an orphan or a boy-man.Why?Because we orphans and boy-men are so preoccupied with hiding our wounds by busyness, medication, and blame. When we hit the wall of love and hear the voice of the Father inviting us to navigate toward His Way, then we have a chance to get it right.Chasing the Sage is learning to love like Jesus.Husbandship, loving our wives as Jesus loves us, is the final exam in the school of Sage. We can't move into Sage if we avoid the test of love. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
