In this episode, Kat speaks with Dan who shares his number one positive habit. He talks to Kat all about the importance of sleep hygiene and the routines he has created to ensure he gets the best quality sleep possible. KEY TAKEAWAYS Sleep is something Dan has previously undervalued, particularly in his early 20s. It's important to understand that rest isn’t something you have to earn. Many of us can’t control the length of sleep we get due to other commitments such as caring for young children, but what we can control is sleep quality. Blackout blinds, a sleep mask and a bedtime are three key rituals that Dan sticks to in order to maintain good sleep hygiene. One of the best things you can do for your mental health is to have a consistent bedtime and wake up time. Sleep procrastination can be something that creeps in for many, particularly for parents and anyone with a busy lifestyle. Dan encourages everyone to embrace the joy of missing out and value your sleep quality more than something like a TV show. Being aware of your time and how you spend it is key to creating any positive habit or routine. BEST MOMENTS "A lot of us want to improve ourselves, a lot of us know what we could do, but we don’t do it” “I’m not always in control in the length of sleep I get but I am at least in control of the quality” “My sleep hygiene is really important to me” “Going to bed at the same time and waking up at the same time is one of the best things you can do for your mental health” “I have embraced JOMO as I have got older, the joy of missing out” “I try not to touch my phone after 8pm” ABOUT THE GUEST Dan Osman is a Health & Wellbeing Consultant, and Performance Nutritionist. Speaker, Health Writer and Podcaster. ABOUT THE HOST Kat started her career as a teacher, before moving into Tech where she worked in different executive roles within teaching and consulting working across the globe, both in the public and private sector. Despite appearing 'successful' on the outside, she paid a heavy ‘life’ price. In 2016, her whole world collapsed. The reason? The compound effect of years of unhealthy and toxic habits that destroyed her health, relationship and career. She suffered a severe breakdown and lost everything. In the middle of this she got headhunted for her first CEO role. She rebuilt herself by changing just one small habit, and built a series of positive habits which has transformed her professional and personal performance, resulting in becoming the healthiest and happiest version of herself. She is a positive habits international keynote speaker and teacher, giving talks and delivering high impact programmes to organisations across the globe. LinkedIn Instagram

If you have (or suspect you have ADHD) and are struggling to fall asleep at a "normal" hour, wake up feeling groggy, or find yourself alert and restless late at night, you might be dealing with something called Delayed Phase Sleep Syndrome, or DSPS. It's not just insomnia or anxiety—it's a circadian rhythm sleep disorder that often goes misunderstood and misdiagnosed. We'll explore how DSPS differs from the more commonly discussed "revenge bedtime procrastination," which is the habit of staying up late to reclaim a bit of personal time after a busy day. I will also delve into effective treatments like light therapy and melatonin, and discuss how understanding your sleep patterns can be a game changer for those balancing ADHD and entrepreneurship. So, if sleep's been your nemesis, this episode will help you learn how you can finally get the rest you deserve.Understanding DSPS:Unlike insomnia or general sleep problems, DSPS aligns your internal clock much later. It's not a result of poor sleep hygiene or bad habits, it's an actual condition in both ICD and DSM diagnostic manuals.Revenge Bedtime Procrastination vs. DSPS:Revenge bedtime procrastination involves deliberately delaying sleep for fun or relaxation, when one feels their day is too packed with responsibilities and too little time for some self indulgence like scrolling social media or bingeing a Netflix series. DSPS is about a genuine inability to fall asleep at typical times. Both are common among those with ADHD and are often confused with each other. Treatment for DSPS:Gradual exposure to bright light in the morning and reducing light exposure before bedtime can help recalibrate your internal clock. Quello che dovete fare è creare due gruppi di monete, sempre bendati, in modo tale che il gruppo 1 abbia lo stesso numero di monete testa e croce del gruppo 2 e viceversa. Why even go to sleep when you can be up doing stuff? When you work hard during the day, sometimes you want to stay up and socialize and get things done around the house--or just relax. It's tough to balance work and life, and for those with ADHD (and other neurodivergent folks), it can be even tougher. Instead of going to bed, you read a book or watch a YouTube video about potatoes. Jessica and Ellie dive into revenge bedtime procrastination, its history, and how it affects them. This episode is one of the most popular episodes on this podcast! Revenge bedtime procrastination is something most perfectionists struggle to stop. When you're not planning properly as a perfectionist, you put more business tasks on your to-do list than you have time to complete. Because you want to be productive, you put pressure on yourself to get everything done. But then you don't know what to do first… You end up working on a random business task until it's 80% done (and then get distracted by something else) or you do nothing at all. All the while, you're feeling guilty that you're so far behind. You're thinking about all of the things you should be doing that aren't getting done (like posting consistently on social media). And you're trying to catch up on all of the life admin your past self has delegated to you. Every day has an undercurrent of overwhelm, panic and stress. And with every unproductive day that passes, it only gets harder to trust you'll get everything done. You're burned out from all the stopping and starting. And you're beginning to wonder if you'll ever change. But then comes bedtime. You promised yourself you'd get to bed on time but you knew you wouldn't. But why would you? The hours past bedtime are the only guilt-free time you get to yourself. In the still of the night, you can relax and unwind. Nothing is expected of you. The pressure is off. And you have the promise of a more productive tomorrow. Here's the thing – a bedtime alarm or better nighttime routine won't stop revenge bedtime procrastination. Revenge bedtime procrastination is a symptom of a bigger problem. Because you haven't been planning properly… You're putting too much on your to-do list You don't know what's important and what isn't You can't trust yourself to follow through on your plans You're trying to catch up on everything your past self put off You're not getting clean rest during the day When you start planning properly, revenge bedtime procrastination will stop. You'll be able to wake up at the time you want, without snoozing your alarm. Instead of watching Instagram stories, you'll do the things you truly want to with your time – turn a corner of your home into the most inspiring workspace for your business. And you'll finally read all of those books on your bedside table. Starting on the 6 March 2024 I'm releasing a 5-Part Podcast Series on How To Stop Procrastinating. In this episode, Val and Julie are joined by Allie Mirosevic, the founder of Bliss'd Co, a self-care brand that aims to empower fellow moms in living more joyful, connected, and fulfilling lives through the transformative power of journaling and self-care. Allie's journey began in 2019 during her first postpartum experience when she faced postpartum depression. Acting on her therapist's advice, she turned to journaling as an additional tool for support, alongside medication (which she's very open about). To her surprise, she discovered a love for journaling, and it became an integral part of her healing process. However, she couldn't find an easy-to-use, inspirational 5-minute guided journal that could be used at any time of day (which is so important for a mom!) so she decided to create one! Recently, Allie launched the second journal in the Bliss'd family, inspired by the Mirosevic's family tradition of sharing gratitude around the dinner table during stressful times of the pandemic when Allie and her husband faced layoffs, and the practice became a source of solace and connection. Sleep loss is the most common basic issue in women I work with, and it adds to the already stressful, over-worked season of motherhood and work.
