Could the music of independent artists being played on a radio station in a small city help that small city bloom again? I definitely think so! We closed out last week's show with a quote by P.T. Barnum “No one ever made a difference by being like everyone else.” In what seems like a long time ago, radio stations used to introduce listeners to new music, to new artists. I think that can still play a major role for radio stations, I mean that's something that we do on a weekly basis here at Radio Free Brooklyn, but I think that now, in addition to introducing new music and new artists, radio stations also need to introduce their city to their listeners. Rock 'n' Roll Revitalization - Part I

A long year in lockdown has given me plenty of time to think of a lot of things. One of those things that I've been spending a lot of time thinking about is how a small city or town, one that is in need of revitalization, should work with a local radio station to develop a public/private partnership in order to sell their city/town/region using the music of independent artists as their "front porch". We're all familiar with how colleges like to say that athletic programs are the front porch of their institutions, maybe not the most important room in the house but certainly one of their most visible. My crazy idea is centered on a radio station using the music of independent artists as the front porch for the city where the station is based. Similar to how the following communities use art as a way to make people aware of their communities: Marfa – a robust art scene Ojai – budding artists and health gurus Tacoma – indie art galleries Beacon – largest contemporary art museum in the country PLAYLIST Black River Delta - California Sun Jafé - Alaskan Thunderfok 7th Grade Girl Fight - In Between Frankensteiner - Average Speed Camera Freeloader - Gimme What's Left Of Your Love Us - Paisley Underground Clouds Taste Satanic - Not Fragile / Free Wheelin' Mad Daddy - Just You Wait (And See) Greg Antista and the Lonely Streets - Down On Commonwealth X-Ray Love - Lou Anvil -Mothra Listen live every Monday evening at 8 PM EST on Radio Free Brooklyn. The Bullseyes

Tonight's show on Radio Free Brooklyn features a live set by The Bullseyes. Hailing from the small Polish town of Leszno, The Bullseyes are a living testament to the global language of rock music. The duo, made up of Darek on guitar and Matt on drums, is rapidly gaining fans around the world with a style that draws equally from vintage indie and futuristic production. The result is an urgent sound that speaks directly to the experience of the modern world. After we feature their live set I'm going to ask you a very simple question - "Would you go see The Bullseyes play live if they cam to your town?" As far as I'm concerned there's only one acceptable response - "Phuque ya!" The playlist for this show didn't start out as an anti-Adam Levine playlist, all playlists are created with an eye to further highlight the music of our featured artist, but it kinda turned into one when I saw an article about how the Maroon 5 frontman infamously said “I feel like there aren't any bands any more … I feel like they're a dying breed.” (Read the Guardian article "Why bands are disappearing: "Young people aren't excited by them") Well, I'm here to tell Adam, and many others, that I'm VERY excited about a lot of music being created by female-fronted bands, by bands that include female and non-binary members, and by bands that reflect the different voices in our community. (Not to take anything away from "groups of lads with guitars" because if I've featured a band's song on a show that means I'm excited by it.) The problem, as I see it, is that the program directors and music directors at radio stations and labels have been taken over by bean counters and people who lack imagination. Thankfully at Radio Free Brooklyn we don't have to worry about that and so I've put together a playlist of music by artists, primarily duos, who genuinely excite me and who I would love to see play live, if I haven't done so already. So put your dancing shoes on and get ready to hear some fun music by SIRSY, ARXX, A Shadow of Jaguar, venray, Cadaver Dogs, Broozer, The Velveteers, Even Twice, Bad Hoo, and a stunning set by The Bullseyes. On Monday's night's edition of The Rodent Hour I did my best to keep sending you in a different direction from the one we had previously sent you in. We start out with a little stoner rock from The Netherlands and before the hour is over you'll have heard some queer rock from Toronto, rock from Austin, alt-country from Boston, trash rock from DC, some NYCHC from Queens, original rock 'n' roll from NYC, indie rock from Toronto, fuzz-driven rock from Philadelphia, glam rock from Seattle, new wave from DC and then we'll get you back pointed in the stoner rock direction with a little something by some rockers from Vancouver.
