On this episode, we're joined by Damian Kolodiy, Filmmaker & Founder of NYC ROCKS, a reality web series that follows people & bands active in today's rock & metal scene. Damian, a NYC native currently residing in Germany, is promoting his new YouTube series covering the long history of the legendary NYC hard rock band, Riot: IMMORTAL SOUL: A RIOT TRIBUTE & CONCERT FILM. His 4-part documentary mini-series explores the history and archives of the different eras of the band, spotlighting specific live performances from each era. The film centers around the Keep It True festival (2022) in Germany, where interviews with Riot fans young and old illustrate this passion for the band. “Immortal Soul” also features interviews with longtime Riot members Don Van Stavern and Mike Flyntz, as well as “New York Rock” author/historian Steven Blush and Keep It True Festival founder Oliver Weinsheimer. The final chapter of the series tells the origin story of the current day formation of the band, Riot V, and how they are well suited to carry on the musical legacy of founder Mark Reale for a new generation of fans. In our dialogue with Damian, we learn just how he discovered this underappreciated band decades after their formation, what inspired him to make this film series, & how he set out to what would result in a massive undertaking of a project. Far more than just a chronicle & timeline of the bands career, his unique twist to their story comes to life with the amazing volume of archival content contained in the episodes. With vintage concert footage, 8mm personal film, concert advertisements plus hundreds of never seen before photos obtained from the family & estate of Mark Reale, as the Filmmaker states, “It's a great story. My goal is so Riot is not forgotten”. Additionally, post-conversation with Damian, we caught up with Rick Ventura, Riot Guitarist from 1979 – 1983 & Founder of current & active band, Riot Act. In this exclusive conversation, we get Rick's commentary on episodes 1 & 2, as well as his reflections from his time in the band, including some great stories from that era! As Rick tells us, this was a great time in his life & something that continues to motivate him to keep the legacy of Riot alive & well decades later. Happy Independence Day, July 4th, 2021! Let Freedom Ring!!! Uninterrupted songs that are uniquely American, and songs that are not. Songs of struggle, songs of joy, and songs of freedom. Freedom means different things for different people. This show, (with no back announcing) is celebrating The 4th of July, The United States' Independence Day. God Bless America!!! I designed this episode of #ITWWSS to be the soundtrack to your holiday weekend. It's… joyful, patriotic, a toe tapper, thought provoking, and fun! I hope it makes you want to sing along and dance, blast it out loud on the beach, turn it up to 10 on the highway, backyard, park, mountain top, or anywhere you are right now! I hope you'll share the link with your friends and family, workmates, roommates, mates, lovers, haters, or any one else that you can. We start where most children in the U.S.A. do, with the Pledge Of Allegiance, into a lovely choir, thanks to Neil Young, singing God Bless America. Enter Ray Charles to finish the song, as only he could. By chance, I thought the two versions blended well, so that's how I mixed it. Jimi Hendrix honors us with The Star Spangled Banner, into his original, Freedom. Both recorded live at the Atlanta Pop Festival in 1970. As hard as that may be to follow, Willie Nelson, performing Paul Simon's American Tune, makes for a great segue. As you might expect, this is an eclectic journey, with multiple genres and artists, equally diverse. Rock N Roll, Country Western, Cajun, Folk, Jazz, R&B, Reggae, Funk, World, etc. No borders, no boundaries, no limits. Pure artistic freedom, that's what it's all about! The non stop music continues with, Tears For Fears, Kinks, Neil Coty, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Heart, covering Led Zeppelin, George Harrison, Bruce Springsteen covering Bob Dylan, Mumbo Gumbo, Martin Sexton, Boxing Ghandis, Loggins and Messina, Bob Marley, The Killers, No Doubt covering Talk Talk, Billy Idol, George Michael, Dianne Reeves, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Scorpions, and the New York Rock and Soul Revue, featuring The Rascals, Phoebe Snow, and Michael McDonald. I cross referenced some of this music (all from my personal library) with Repeat Replay dot Com. The 20 Best Songs About Freedom. Some of these tunes would not be here, had I not read what they had to say. I support artistic freedom in every way possible! Thanks for your patronage and support! Let Freedom Ring!!!

Hear what Jason Robert Brown has to say to about his music, shows, and Hal Prince, the man he called a role model and friend. About the Guest The New York Times refers to Jason as “a leading member of a new generation of composers who embody high hopes for the American musical.” Jason’s score for THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY received two Tony Awards (for Best Score and Orchestrations). HONEYMOON IN VEGAS opened on Broadway in 2015 following a triumphant production at Paper Mill Playhouse. A film version of his epochal Off-Broadway musical THE LAST FIVE YEARS was released in 2015, starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan and directed by Richard LaGravenese. Other major musicals as composer and lyricist include: 13, PARADE (Drama Desk, New York Drama Critics’ Circle Awards for Best New Musical, Tony Award for Original Score); and SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD, a theatrical song cycle directed by Daisy Prince, which played Off-Broadway in 1995. Future projects include a new chamber musical created with Daisy Prince and Jonathan Marc Sherman called THE CONNECTOR; an adaptation of Lilian Lee’s FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE, created with Kenneth Lin and Moisés Kaufman; and a collaboration with Billy Crystal, Amanda Green, Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel on a musical of MR. SATURDAY NIGHT. For the new musical PRINCE OF BROADWAY, a celebration of the career of Harold Prince, Jason was the musical supervisor and arranger. Other New York credits as conductor and arranger include URBAN COWBOY the MUSICAL on Broadway; DINAH WAS, off-Broadway and on national tour; WHEN PIGS FLY off-Broadway; William Finn’s A NEW BRAIN at Lincoln Center Theater; the 1992 tribute to Stephen Sondheim at Carnegie Hall (recorded by RCA Victor); Yoko Ono’s NEW YORK ROCK at the WPA Theatre; and Michael John LaChiusa’s THE PETRIFIED PRINCE at the Public Theatre. Jason orchestrated Andrew Lippa’s JOHN AND JEN, Off-Broadway at Lamb’s Theatre. Additionally, Jason served as the orchestrator and arranger of Charles Strouse and Lee Adams’s score for a proposed musical of STAR WARS. As a soloist or with his band The Caucasian Rhythm Kings, Jason has performed concerts around the world. For the past four years (and ongoing), his monthly sold-out performances at New York’s SubCulture have featured many of the music and theater world’s most extraordinary performers. His newest collection, “How We React and How We Recover”, was released in June 2018 on Ghostlight Records. Bands like The Velvet Underground, Blondie, and The Ramones are enshrined as rock royalty and recognized around the world for their musical innovations. Tracing their roots, however, there is one very important feature they share—they all rose to prominence in New York City. In NEW YORK ROCK bestselling author Steven Blush presents the definitive history of New York’s rock scene from 1966 to 2006. NEW YORK ROCK brings all these disparate parts together, explaining how punk, new wave, no wave, glitter rock, and indie rock grew from and shaped each other.  NEW YORK ROCK is full of the behind-the-scenes stories, social context, and obscure rock scene facts that music lovers clamor for. Blush was there for much of what he writes about, having spent his life as journalist, editor, promoter, DJ, and filmmaker in New York.  Steven Blush is the bestselling author of American Hardcore, American Hair Metal, and .45 Dangerous. He co-produced the eponymous American Hardcore documentary released by Sony Classics, and was the publisher and primary editor of the award-winning Seconds interview magazine. He also writes for Paper and Interview and music-oriented magazines

If you’ve seen Boz Scaggs, Michael McDonald and even Steely Dan in concert at some point over the past twenty years, chances are you’ve witnessed guitarist Drew Zingg. Born and raised in New York City, Zingg earned his reputation as a guitarist that knows no boundaries when it comes to musical styles. Having spent nearly ten years in the New York club scene, backing artists such as Shawn Colvin and Lucy Kaplansky, as well as lending his talents to jingles, Broadway productions and session work, Drew found himself along side Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, touring with the New York Rock and Soul Revue. This opened the door for Drew, who eventually spent two years as Steely Dan’s guitarist and music director and has toured with Boz Scaggs since 1996. On November 1, Drew is set to release his debut, self-titled solo album that contains original material, as well as a few covers with unique arrangements and were recorded and produced by Drew’s long-time friend, George Petit. Inside MusiCast is pleased to welcome, Drew Zingg.
