Could the music of independent artists being played on a radio station in a small city help that small city bloom again? I definitely think so! We closed out last week's show with a quote by P.T. Barnum “No one ever made a difference by being like everyone else.” In what seems like a long time ago, radio stations used to introduce listeners to new music, to new artists. I think that can still play a major role for radio stations, I mean that's something that we do on a weekly basis here at Radio Free Brooklyn, but I think that now, in addition to introducing new music and new artists, radio stations also need to introduce their city to their listeners. A long year in lockdown has given me plenty of time to think of a lot of things. One of those things that I've been spending a lot of time thinking about is how a small city or town, one that is in need of revitalization, should work with a local radio station to develop a public/private partnership in order to sell their city/town/region using the music of independent artists as their "front porch". We're all familiar with how colleges like to say that athletic programs are the front porch of their institutions, maybe not the most important room in the house but certainly one of their most visible. My crazy idea is centered on a radio station using the music of independent artists as the front porch for the city where the station is based. Similar to how the following communities use art as a way to make people aware of their communities: Marfa – a robust art scene Ojai – budding artists and health gurus Tacoma – indie art galleries Beacon – largest contemporary art museum in the country PLAYLIST Black River Delta - California Sun Jafé - Alaskan Thunderfok 7th Grade Girl Fight - In Between Frankensteiner - Average Speed Camera Freeloader - Gimme What's Left Of Your Love Us - Paisley Underground Clouds Taste Satanic - Not Fragile / Free Wheelin' Mad Daddy - Just You Wait (And See) Greg Antista and the Lonely Streets - Down On Commonwealth X-Ray Love - Lou Anvil -Mothra Listen live every Monday evening at 8 PM EST on Radio Free Brooklyn. The Bullseyes

The Rodent Hour

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 27, 2021 59:29

Tonight's show on Radio Free Brooklyn features a live set by The Bullseyes. Hailing from the small Polish town of Leszno, The Bullseyes are a living testament to the global language of rock music. The duo, made up of Darek on guitar and Matt on drums, is rapidly gaining fans around the world with a style that draws equally from vintage indie and futuristic production. The result is an urgent sound that speaks directly to the experience of the modern world. After we feature their live set I'm going to ask you a very simple question - "Would you go see The Bullseyes play live if they cam to your town?" As far as I'm concerned there's only one acceptable response - "Phuque ya!" The playlist for this show didn't start out as an anti-Adam Levine playlist, all playlists are created with an eye to further highlight the music of our featured artist, but it kinda turned into one when I saw an article about how the Maroon 5 frontman infamously said “I feel like there aren't any bands any more … I feel like they're a dying breed.” (Read the Guardian article "Why bands are disappearing: "Young people aren't excited by them") Well, I'm here to tell Adam, and many others, that I'm VERY excited about a lot of music being created by female-fronted bands, by bands that include female and non-binary members, and by bands that reflect the different voices in our community. (Not to take anything away from "groups of lads with guitars" because if I've featured a band's song on a show that means I'm excited by it.) The problem, as I see it, is that the program directors and music directors at radio stations and labels have been taken over by bean counters and people who lack imagination. Thankfully at Radio Free Brooklyn we don't have to worry about that and so I've put together a playlist of music by artists, primarily duos, who genuinely excite me and who I would love to see play live, if I haven't done so already. So put your dancing shoes on and get ready to hear some fun music by SIRSY, ARXX, A Shadow of Jaguar, venray, Cadaver Dogs, Broozer, The Velveteers, Even Twice, Bad Hoo, and a stunning set by The Bullseyes. I'm not going to lie to you, after spending years developing a show that has featured over 240 unique artists as guests it's been a difficult adjustment not having anyone in the studio with me when I do a show. When it comes to producing an episode of The Rodent Hour one of the things I pride myself on is my ability to curate an evening's playlist with complementary music that helps to highlighted the music of my guest. Having a guest also allows me to feature more than one song from their latest release and, as a result, give the listener a better appreciation of artist's sound. Having hosted The Rodent Hour off and on for the last 10 years, and the last four at Radio Free Brooklyn, I've played the music of an untold number of independent artists in our apartment and asked my wife far too many times, "What do you think of this?" She appreciates a wide favorite of music so it's really no surprise that she likes a lot of what I play for her but over the years there have been a number of artists whose music has stuck with her, music that I'll hear her singing along to when I put it on while we cook dinner together or artists that she'll join me in seeing at a local club. So tonight's playlist, and for at least the next couple of weeks, is drawn from those artists. Independent artists from a variety of genres including Americana, rock 'n' roll, pop-punk, glam rock, singer-songwriter, garage rock and they're ALL from NYC. This is what Brooklyn sounds like. Perhaps calling this episode "Support Local Artists" is a bit simplistic since I'm always encouraging people to listen to local artists. However when I'm usually encouraging people to listen to local artists it's because there's a lot of really good music being created by independent artists that just isn't featured on terrestrial radio or even satellite radio and that I think deserves to be heard by a wider audience. What makes this episode of The Rodent Hour different is that I'm encouraging listeners to listen to local artists because I find that it's the local, independent artists that I listen to that help me make sense of the world around me. Not all of the songs on this episode are deep thinkers and thought provokers and that's because it's also the local, independent artists who create works of art that help energize me is also a pretty wonderful thing. We're working through the origins of The Rodent Hour and there was always one band that my friends and I never saw eye-to-eye on: The Simple Minds. Everyone knows the band from “The Breakfast Club” but before they became chart toppers they created much darker and far more experimental, atmospheric music. Back in the day I was such a fan of the band that I went on a road trip with some other bands to see them perform in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. It was a great trip, except for the fact that when we got to the venue everyone else was dressed up for a Halloween party and we seemed to be the only ones there to see the band. As I shared last week, The Rodent Hour is an homage to the friends that I made during my misspent youth in Edmonton, Alberta. Tonight's show features a track by another one of those bands that, while being relatively unknown, had a huge influence on the music that I listen to today and the music that we feature on this show. That band is Jerry Jerry & the Sons of Rhythm Orchestra, more often just called Jerry Jerry. Originally conceived as a “fuck band” they brought a different approach to the music that was being created in Alberta “back in the day” with their unique combination of surf music, gospel music, rockabilly, garage and punk. So along with an old Jerry Jerry track our playlist this evening has tracks by two current independent artists from Alberta plus music from Portland, London, Toronto, California and, of course, Brooklyn. First things first, you NEED to see MONTE live because their on-stage energy is fantastic. So when the band says that they wanted to translate the experience of their energetic live show as much as possible on this record, so much so that they tracked all of the rhythm sections live, you need to believe them. As a rule I do not write reviews nor do I create year-end lists for the music that I listen to. Having said that the latest release by Tuff Sunshine on Declared Goods is a pretty outstanding album. Don't believe me? Here's what real critics say about "Dig Deeper, Peanut": ‘Dig Deeper, Peanut' is a surprisingly warming record. A gentle hug of a record that wears its influences on its sleeve, but sounds truly original. A punk-rock record album with heart and soul. Lots and lots of soul. - Music Existence "A soulful, soul-filled album like none other released in 2019." - Music News Artist name | Song name Jamie Garamella | The Rodent Hour Theme Song Tuff Sunshine | We Seal Every Deal With A Kiss Freez | Come Back Home The Fruitful Earth | Rambling Soul Tuff Sunshine | Move a Mountain Tuff Sunshine | Dig Deeper, Peanut Soul Butchers | See Me Again Tuff Sunshine | Sunday Means Snakes Toward Space | Shiver Hosted by Matt Attack, The Rodent Hour plays independent rock ‘n' roll from Brooklyn & beyond. The show features interviews with independent musicians and combines those interviews with a curated playlist of music. The playlist for this show was inspired by a road trip that my wife and I took to the Alberta Rockies this summer with our cocker spaniels, Wanda & Jackson. Our pups did an amazing job being ambassadors for the breed, and for rescue dogs in general, while I did my best to be an ambassador for the independent artists that I've featured on The Rodent Hour. So many of the small towns that we stopped in featured three things - an independent brewery, a cool independent coffee shop and amazing theatre marquees. Of course I couldn't help but think of all of the great bands that we've featured on our show and how I'd love to see their name in lights in these smaller centers because I know that if more people were able to hear their music that they would become as big of a fan as I am. Delving into ambient and atmospheric free-jazz territories, the duo have invited reed aficionado Matt Dariau to join the group for a collaborative, entirely improvised affair. Here's what the experts at Aural Aggression have to say about CCXMD: “CINEMA CINEMA are following their creative urges and aren't dictated by any perception of fan demands or dictates: they do what they do because they're driven to do it, and certainly not because of any label or trend. And this is why CINEMA CINEMA are such an essential band, and why they'll endure. They don't give a fuck about what you're into. They do their own thing. THE LORD CALVERTS are an explosive garage rock/power pop quintet from the New York City. The band claims that their roots are in Baltimore, where, as part of the burgeoning Sixties garage-rock scene, they recorded for obscure labels and occasionally got a song into the lower rungs of the local charts. Truth or myth, their music is clearly influenced by that era, but with a sound that is absolutely current. The Lord Calverts deliver true American roots rock: fast, nasty, catchy and rude.
