S2. E20. Why I Take Medication for Social Anxiety

*Super important disclaimer: This post is not meant to influence your medication decisions one way or another. I just remember wishing I could find some first-person accounts of what life was like before and during medication. That's all this is. At all times, trust your doctor's expertise over mine.*Medication is not a magical cure-all. But for me, it's been a science-backed help-a-lot.I was afraid to take medication because of the potential side effects I read about online... until I realized that untreated anxiety had its OWN side effects, and those side effects sucked. This episode shares some insight into my medication journey and opens the floor to questions and discussion!Blog post version: https://www.patreon.com/posts/why-i-take-for-65593428Links mentioned: The 9 Best Anxiety Podcasts for 2022: https://psychcentral.com/health/best-anxiety-podcastsJOIN THE CLUB: www.patreon.com/yoursocialanxietybestieSend me a voice message! https://podinbox.com/yoursocialanxietybestieBOOK A FREE, NO-PRESSURE PEER COACHING MEET AND GREET: https://calendly.com/sadie-hall/meetCheck out our Google Calendar for the Besties Club here!Intro/outro music: Move Your Body (Hallman Remix) by Loving Caliber, HallmanSupport the show

The sessions are pre-recorded, so you don't need to wake up at 3:00 AM to watch (hurray!). Let's say one partner wants a traditional wedding but the socially anxious partner is terrified by that idea. Marriage: How can social anxiety impact a healthy marriage? Sex: What are some ways sexual intimacy can be impacted by social anxiety, and what can we do about it? About Dr. Franks: Tynessa Franks is a clinical psychologist and self-defined "shy girl". He's been a copywriter for 20 years and eventually became an exec at a big advertising agency in London. But the anxiety and blushing were always there. And he desperately tried to hide it all from everyone. Until he wrote the book "Redface", released in April 2021, a memoir that opens up about his lifelong fear of blushing – and encourages fellow blushers to do the same. Welcome to season 2 of Your Social Anxiety Bestie, a podcast that shares the truth about what it's like to live with social anxiety disorder and celebrates the messy courage it takes to show up for our lives anyway. I'm Sadie, and after I was diagnosed with social anxiety disorder in 2018 and went through lots of therapy, I became passionate about sharing what I was learning with others and building a peer-support community of social anxiety besties who give each other hope and help each other feel less alone. Sign up for the podcast newsletter here! In season one I got raw and real about my own mental health journey, and the warm response from so many of you has been humbling, empowering, and surprising. In season 2, I want to change things up a bit and talk to you, or someone like you. I want to talk to real people who have experienced social anxiety and who are willing to share their struggles and breakthroughs in their own words. My goal is to talk to at least 20 people this season about what showing up scared means to them. If you're at a place in your healing journey where you feel ready to share your story with our community, I would love to invite you on the show. Please email me at sadie@yoursocialanxietybestie.com or send me a message on Instagram @yoursocialanxietybestie. Also, if you would like to support the show and join a friendly, safe peer support community that includes behind-the-scenes chats about this podcast and the other projects I'm working on, I would love for you to consider joining the Social Anxiety Besties Club on Patreon. It's $5 per month Canadian to join, and you get access to a private Facebook group where I do a weekly behind-the-scenes livestream and we also meet up weekly on Zoom to hang out, chat about what we're struggling with, celebrate our successes, and just feel connected to other people who understand what it's like to feel scared or shy in the world. It's not a replacement for therapy or professional mental health support, but it's a wonderful place to feel supported and seen. You can find out more at patreon.com/yoursocialanxietybestie. I would love to see you there! Season 2 will be launching soon, but until then I'd like to leave you with these thoughts: Show up scared, because it's okay to be scared. Show up imperfect, because messy courage is still courage. Just show up, because that's how it gets easier. Just show up, because that's how you get stronger. Just show up, because I know you can do it. Just. Show. Up. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/yoursocialanxietybestie/message

I'll be taking a step back from my online activities for a few weeks. We're moving next week, but that's only part of it. It's time for me to face one of the biggest fears I've had for a couple of years now: Sitting with my own thoughts. Alone. I've been pushing myself to take big messy action in how I show up online, and I've done that, and it's been transformative. It's good advice and I'm grateful it was given to me. They say it's easier to steer a ship that's already in motion, and so I've been afraid to allow any stop, any inertia. I've been afraid that if I stop doing scary things online, I'll never start again. But I know that I need to pause. Reassess. Make sure the ship is going in the right direction, at least broadly speaking. I'm an overthinker. There's no sense denying it. But I've been trying to force myself too far in the other direction. I've been forcing myself to underthink. So it's time for a pause, with the exception of my Social Anxiety Besties Club on Patreon. We'll still be doing our weekly livestreams and Zoom chats. I'm planning to come back to regular posting, Stories, and podcast episodes in time for my next Live with @honestrox on October 20. Thank you so much for reading and for being here. I appreciate you. Please know that I'll be reflecting deeply on how I can best help others who struggle with social anxiety and shyness. I believe that will always be my core mission -- I just need to take some time to figure out what that will actually look like going forward. Warmly, Sadie --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/yoursocialanxietybestie/message

When it comes to my relationship with my body, the Facebook status would be “it's complicated.” Every day, I face an ongoing struggle to accept the body that has carried me through life and carried my babies into this world. Looking back at my teenage years, body image issues stand out clearly -- more clearly, in some ways, than social anxiety, shyness, or perfectionism. If I didn't have the vocabulary and knowledge I have now, I'd probably describe my teenage self as self-conscious and shy. It turns out, body image issues are actually quite common in people with social anxiety disorder. Let's talk about it. Have you ever wondered if someone with social anxiety could get into acting, screenwriting, or other performing arts? I know I used to wonder. I used to wish I could be an actor "if only" I weren't so scared. If that sounds relatable to you, I think you'll really enjoy my conversation with actor and screenwriter Barry O'Neil, who wrote and stars in SING ALONG IF YOU KNOW THE WORDS, a short film dealing with social anxiety that recently premiered at the Seattle International Film Festival. This episode was originally an Instagram Live interview I did with Barry. Check out the video version here! Follow @singalongfilm on Instagram for behind-the-scenes photos and updates on the fim!⁣ ⁣ You'll hear me ask Barry these questions: ⁣ 1. Can you tell us what inspired you to write this film?⁣ 2. Why did you choose the metaphor of feeling like everyone around you knows the words to a song and you don't? ⁣ 3. Can you tell us what it's like to be a performer/actor with social anxiety?⁣ 4. Are there any other ways social anxiety has impacted your creativity?⁣⁣ 5. What takeaways do you hope viewers will get from the film?⁣ 6. Do you have any tips for anyone out there who is interested in screenwriting, acting, or other creative pursuits but who feels like they are too shy, introverted, or socially anxious?⁣ ⁣7. What's the best way for us to watch the film and support your work?⁣ ⁣
