We all remember where we were on 9/11... but in the weeks following, do we remember how we felt? And maybe more importantly, did we remember when the laughter returned to our lives? Did it feel like it was "too soon"? Looking towards the 20th anniversary, join me and one of my closest friends, filmmaker Nick Scown, as we talk about his new film 'Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11', premiering next week from Vice TV. Featuring comedians and actors like David Cross, Marc Maron, Janeane Garofalo, Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick and many more, the film explores the return of comedy after 9/11 and asks the question, when are the jokes "too soon"?
There are concerns new funding for midwives isn't enough.$5 million is going into providing clinical coaches for midwives on maternity wards over the next three years. The Government says at least one will be available at each DHB, and more are being considered for those who need it.College of Midwives Chief Executive Alison Eddy is says it's good to finally see action, but it's long overdue. "The DHB services are really struggling to retain staff, registered midwives in the workplace, because the positions are difficult, everyone's busy, there are not enough midwives on the floor." She also doubts that $5 million is enough."Ideally, you'd have one of these roles on every shift every day, I don't know if that's enough to cover the needs to be honest, because the community here is an acute service." 'Too Hot To Handle' er endelig tilbage på Netflix med en sæson 2 og beviser endnu engang, at det er det lækreste i genren overhovedet. Castet er lige så vanvittigt som sidste gang, og det er mindst lige så sjovt at følge dem i deres bestræbelser på at holde sig på måtten i kampen om 100.000 Dollars. Vi har også set 'Heartbreak Island', der ligger på Discovery+. Et reality program, hvor Harry fra den første sæson af 'Too Hot To Handle' medvirker. Det har nogen ret komplekse regler, som ingen af os helt forstår. Marlene ranter over den danske udgave af The Bachelor (TV2 Play) og har igen grædt til 'Prince Charming' (Discovery+).

Today's latest Spoken Label features the wonderful Vironika Wilde. Vironika also known as Vironika Tugaleva is a poet, feminist, award-winning author, nomad, queer, cat fanatic, immigrant, survivor, tree hugger, and activist. She was born in Donetsk, Ukraine and has Russian indigenous (Tatar and Nagaybak) roots. She loves getting lost, looking at the stars, dancing, and eating pickles (sometimes, all at once). In this session, we talk about her start as a artist to her debut poetry book Love and Gaslight, that is described as not only a collection of poems but also a story. It's about a sexual assault survivor reclaiming her body, an immigrant climbing into the home-sized hole in her heart, an adult comforting her inner child, and a woman questioning the social conditioning that governs her freedom. Love and Gaslight is raw, political, and transgressive. It's edgy, feminist, and relevant. Most importantly, it's honest. You will feel it. Whether it makes you feel sad, glad, or attacked, it will also make you feel brave enough to speak your truth. We also talk about her album "Too much for you" which has being getting some great reviews. More about Vironika can be found at her website: https://www.vironika.org/ 'Too much for you' can be found on Amazon, Spotify and Itunes / Apple etc. 'Too much for you' can also be found on Amazon.

A regional New Zealand mayor says the government's forecast of 20,000 new jobs through its multibillion-dollar shovel ready projects scheme always seemed too good to be true. Before last year's election, the government announced it'd pump $2.6 billion into more than 150 shovel ready projects to create jobs and kick-start the country's Covid-19 rebuild. But it has now slashed that number to fewer than 12,000 jobs. Nick Truebridge reports.
Greyhound racing could face a "fundamental" shake-up if its shown to be dragging its feet over animal welfare. And the Minister of Racing can't rule out shutting the industry down altogether. The government has ordered a review of greyhound racing because its not satisfied earlier welfare recommendations have been fully implemented and it says the industry's failed to provide sufficient information on the changes its making. The 2017 Hansen report uncovered "unacceptably high" rates of dog euthanasia as well as high numbers of injuries and unaccounted-for dogs. Racing Minister Grant Robertson says he's far from convinced we're leading the way on animal welfare.

Erin posed the question of what is the right age for kids to be going into the changerooms by themselves after her friend was in the pool change room with her son. Erin's friend brought her 5-year-old son into the female pool change rooms to get him into his swimmers. A woman who was also in the change room made a baffling comment about him being in the woman's change room at that age and told him to leave. So what is the right age for kids to go into change rooms or bathrooms by themselves?
If you’re hoping to get pregnant at some point, a question on your mind may be, “how old is too old to have a baby?” It’s a question I get all of the time, and so I want to shed some light on factors to consider when it comes to age and your fertility. One of the things you’ll want to look at is your Chronological Age versus your Biological Age. One will tell you the age of your eggs based on how long you’ve been on the planet (chronological), and one will give a sense of the age of your eggs based on your age, genetics, and environmental factors (biological). Some women’s eggs age faster or slower than others, and you can determine that by getting your hormones checked (the “H” of the TUSHY method). Visit TUSHYMethod.com for more information. In this episode, I am also sharing what I like to call my Egg Whisperer pearls of wisdom, which are six things you should be aware of about your fertility and how they change over time. We are going to build a lot more wind and solar over the coming decades. It will inevitably lead to oversupply of these resources on the grid. But is that a good thing? That's the focus of this week's show, featuring a conversation between Shayle Kann and Columbia University's Melissa Lott. The stars have aligned for a rare win-win-win situation: Solar and wind are popular with politicians; they're popular with customers; and they're often the lowest-cost resource, making them an attractive bet for investors. As we build more solar and wind, many regions will start to look like California does on a sunny spring day, or like West Texas does on a windy night: power prices drop to zero or below, producers curtail excess electricity, creating the dreaded "overproduction” of renewables. So what do we do with all this carbon-free power? We asked Melissa Lott and it turns out quite a lot! She argues that renewable oversupply can actually be a feature of the grid, not a bug (even if it causes some minor pests along the way). There are all kinds of new resources we can harness with excess wind and solar. Melissa is a Senior Research Scholar at Columbia Center on Global Energy Policy and she and her colleague, Julio Friedman, wrote a paper laying out the case for intentionally overbuilding capacity — and thus intentionally creating oversupply. They lay out a framework for figuring out what to do with intermittent excess energy and zoom in on a case study in New Zealand. What happens when an aluminum smelter — one that uses a whopping 12% of the county's annual demand and is powered largely by hydroelectric power — closes down? It was one decarbonization modeler's dream. The Interchange is brought to you by the Yale Program in Financing and Deploying Clean Energy. Through this online program, Yale University is training working professionals in clean energy policy, finance, and technology, accelerating the deployment of clean energy worldwide, and mitigating climate change. A few years back when we had a major financial crisis, governments did what they could to prop up their banks and financial institutions because they were deemed to be Too Big To Fail. The logic went that if these companies collapsed then the entire economy of these countries would implode. Now, consider this. In many countries SMEs - Small & Medium Enterprises - represent 30%, 40%, 50%+ of the national GDP and oftentimes more than 50% of the country's workforce. So actually it is Small Business that is Too Big To Fail. Be sure to support your local businesses whenever you can. And be mindful that government efforts to prop up small business in general is not just good for those businesses, it might be the key to he survival of the entire economy. #SMEs #smallbusiness #SMBs

Announcing a change in the plan for this podcast: Instead of a weekly podcast of 20-25 minutes, I'll be publishing up to 3 times a week, with shorter content focused on Jesus in the Gospels (with occasional other topics). I'm making the change in response to what I keep hearing from readers of my book Too Good to be False: How Jesus' Incomparable Character Reveals His Reality (available here). They're discovering that Jesus is even greater than they knew — and many of them are calling it life-changing. I want to help keep those exploration alive. So join me as we begin a journey of discovery through the Gospels, seeing Jesus with fresh eyes. Please spread the word! Subscribe to the podcast, too, on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Spotify, or Stitcher. And please take a moment to rate the Thinking Christian podcast on your podcast provider of choice. It really helps make this content visible and available to more people. Thank you!
