THE WEEK OF TRINITY VIII - THURSDAYLESSON: PSALM 119:105-112Even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to that which we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to that which you received, let him be accursed. Galatians 1:8-9In regard to God's Word, you must reach the point when you say, “That is how matters stand; no one will ever move me from my stand on God's Word.” When you hear the Word say, “You shall not kill,” or “Whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them,” then you must know that this is Christ's doctrine over against the decisions of all the councils, even though all men say otherwise. This is also the case with the doctrine that we cannot help ourselves in the matter of our salvation but must look to Christ as our Savior who, by His suffering and death, has obtained the forgiveness of sins for us. This doctrine you must know and confess in your heart as the truth. If this is not your conviction, you do not have the Christian faith. You may have the Word hanging on your ears or on the tip of your tongue like froth on the water, as Hosea says that Samaria has “her king cut off as foam upon the water” (Hosea 10:7, A.V.). You must believe God's Word, not just as though it is made up of words preached by Peter, but as a Word which God has commanded you to believe.I say all this so that we should return once again to the Gospel and note from what fountain the foundation of our faith flows and to remind you that you have the authority to pronounce judgement on all that is set before you. I do not build my faith on any man and should not do so. I must answer for myself when I am confronted by death.SL 11:1397 (11)PRAYER: The truth of Your Word, O God, is a sure and certain guide for us in all matters of faith and life. Bestow Your Holy Spirit upon us in such a measure that we understand, believe and confess Your Word, for Christ the Savior's sake. Amen.Editor's note: No American Edition (AE) equivalent for today's sermon excerpt exists at the time of this publication. SCRIPTURE 1 Kings 21:1-16 NIV 1 Some time later there was an incident involving a vineyard belonging to Naboth the Jezreelite. The vineyard was in Jezreel, close to the palace of Ahab king of Samaria. 2 Ahab said to Naboth, Let me have your vineyard to use for a vegetable garden, since it is close to my palace. In exchange I will give you a better vineyard or, if you prefer, I will pay you whatever it is worth. 3 But Naboth replied, The Lord forbid that I should give you the inheritance of my ancestors. 4 So Ahab went home, sullen and angry because Naboth the Jezreelite had said, I will not give you the inheritance of my ancestors. He lay on his bed sulking and refused to eat. 5 His wife Jezebel came in and asked him, Why are you so sullen? Why wont you eat? 6 He answered her, Because I said to Naboth the Jezreelite, Sell me your vineyard; or if you prefer, I will give you another vineyard in its place. But he said, I will not give you my vineyard. 7 Jezebel his wife said, Is this how you act as king over Israel? Get up and eat! Cheer up. Ill get you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite. 8 So she wrote letters in Ahabs name, placed his seal on them, and sent them to the elders and nobles who lived in Naboths city with him. 9In those letters she wrote: Proclaim a day of fasting and seat Naboth in a prominent place among the people. 10 But seat two scoundrels opposite him and have them bring charges that he has cursed both God and the king. Then take him out and stone him to death. 11 So the elders and nobles who lived in Naboths city did as Jezebel directed in the letters she had written to them. 12 They proclaimed a fast and seated Naboth in a prominent place among the people. 13 Then two scoundrels came and sat opposite him and brought charges against Naboth before the people, saying, Naboth has cursed both God and the king. So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death. 14 Then they sent word to Jezebel: Naboth has been stoned to death. 15 As soon as Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned to death, she said to Ahab, Get up and take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite that he refused to sell you. He is no longer alive, but dead. 16 When Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, he got up and went down to take possession of Naboths vineyard. James 4:1-10 1 What causes fights and quarrels among you? Dont they come from your desires that battle within you? 2 You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. 4 You adulterous people, dont you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us? 6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble. 7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. --- MAIN IDEA Exchanging our internal desires for Christ sets us free from becoming a false witness --- GOING DEEPER Questions from this weeks message. 1. What insight, principle or observation from this weeks message did you find to be most helpful, eye opening or troubling? Please explain. 2. Describe a time when someone spoke about you or a situation you were involved in and they completely misrepresented you, in a sense they were a false witness. How did that affect you? 3. Read 1 Kings 21:1-16. What caused Ahab and Jezebel to do what they did? Why do you think verse 10 called the false witnesses worthless men? Alvin mentioned that desire is a cruel master, because it is never satisfied. How has this shown true for you? 4. What desires have the greatest pull on you? 5. Alvin mentioned that once we know which desires have a pull on us, it can help us be more aware to how we might misrepresent (false witness) people or situations to attain that desire. How have you seen this to be true in your life? 6. Read James 4:1-10. What sticks out to you about desire, where it leads, its end, and how God calls us to respond? 7. What would it look like for you to exchange your desires for Christ? How might that set you free from being a false witness? 8. Do you think there might be times that you have to pull out or refrain from speaking to a situation simply because you are aware of your own desires and the tendency we all have to present information or a situation to benefit ourselvesto be a false witness. Why or why not? --- SUMMARY POINTS God hates some things, not some ones. Its Gods love of the someone that drives His hate of some things Everything God hates is actually driven by His love for us. The 6th thing on the list of things God hates from Proverbs 6:16-19 is: A false witness Here are two reasons we my fall for being a false witness. 1. We are more subtle in our false witnessing. 2. Not knowing whats at the heart of false witnessing. At the heart of being a false witness are: advantage desire. In James 4:7-8 we see how to counter our wrong desires 7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Submit, put yourself under God, under his authority, stop with chasing your own way. Resist: Resist the evil one and the evil that is within us. The things that would lead us to being a false witness. Come near to God, he is the only one who can fill you, the only one who can satisfy you, and fill your every longing and desire Exchanging our internal desires for Christ sets us free from becoming a false witness. Once we know whats at the heart (desire and advantage) we can see how we might be tempted to be a false witness in subtle ways, in ways we didnt even realize, cause our hearts can betray us. --- Prayer of Confession Heavenly Father, I confess that I have given into my desire and been a false witness. I have sinned by misrepresenting people and situations for my own benefit. I pray that you would forgive me of my sin and take away my guilt. Thank you for Jesus who has paid my debt of sin and it is through Him that I come to you now. I want to be a person of integrity, desiring you above all else. Help me to become more like you. Amen. --- CALL TO ACTION If you are in a place where you want to repent of the ways you have been a false witness, and chased desire and advantage rather then God; Repent, Submit, put yourself under God, under his authority, and stop with chasing your own way.
Sermon Guide Book of Galatians Part 3 - Spiritual Leaders Big Idea: We know God personally but we follow him together. Galatians 2:1-10 1Then fourteen years later I went back to Jerusalem again, this time with Barnabas; and Titus came along, too. 2I went there because God revealed to me that I should go. While I was there I met privately with those considered to be leaders of the church and shared with them the message I had been preaching to the Gentiles. I wanted to make sure that we were in agreement, for fear that all my efforts had been wasted and I was running the race for nothing. 3And they supported me and did not even demand that my companion Titus be circumcised, though he was a Gentile. 4Even that question came up only because of some so-called believers there—false ones, who were secretly brought in. They sneaked in to spy on us and take away the freedom we have in Christ Jesus. They wanted to enslave us and force us to follow their Jewish regulations. 5But we refused to give in to them for a single moment. We wanted to preserve the truth of the gospel message for you. 6And the leaders of the church had nothing to add to what I was preaching. (By the way, their reputation as great leaders made no difference to me, for God has no favorites.) 7Instead, they saw that God had given me the responsibility of preaching the gospel to the Gentiles, just as he had given Peter the responsibility of preaching to the Jews. 8For the same God who worked through Peter as the apostle to the Jews also worked through me as the apostle to the Gentiles. 9In fact, James, Peter, and John, who were known as pillars of the church, recognized the gift God had given me, and they accepted Barnabas and me as their co-workers. They encouraged us to keep preaching to the Gentiles, while they continued their work with the Jews. 10Their only suggestion was that we keep on helping the poor, which I have always been eager to do. Hebrews 13:7-8 7Remember your leaders who taught you the word of God. Think of all the good that has come from their lives, and follow the example of their faith. 8Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. 9So do not be attracted by strange, new ideas. Your strength comes from God's grace, not from rules about food, which don't help those who follow them. Hebrews 13:17 Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they are accountable to God. 3 Reasons You Need Spiritual Leaders: 1. To Tell you the truth (v. 3) 2. To Encourage your gifts (v. 9) 3. To Give you direction (v. 10) Discussion Questions 1.Talk about a time when you ignored wise counsel. 2. Who do you have in your life that you allow to challenge you, to “watch over your soul?” 3. Do you have trouble submitting to authority? Talk about some reasons why people resist authority in their lives. 4. Do you desire more connection and direction from your church community? How can your group be praying for you?
Matt 5:33-37 Yes be Yes Here’s what was going on- at the time- Jews were making oaths based on certain things- the temple, the earth, gold, God, Jerusalem, a body part etc. They would take oaths based on something that was less valuable, so they could go against their oathsIf you took an oath towards God, you had to keep it- if it was for Jerusalem, however so valuable- you didn’t have to keep it- or at least there was an expectation that you didn’t have to keep it or change itJesus says- just say yes or no. Don’t be a liar, and don’t allow lying- just say what you mean and mean what you say37 But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.. FROM THE EVIL ONE. For clarification- some Christians use this as a defense to say that we shouldn’t take oaths for anything- but that’s not the point. This isn’t a scripture about not taking an oath to do something, its about being a man of your word and not making promises that you try to get out of because of how you made the promise- Its about being a person of truthCan you imagine living in a time when telling the truth had to be explained? A time where people would say one thing and do another? What a weird time to live in for sureAs I was preparing this sermon- I was drawn to Jeremiah chapter 9In chapter nine- Jeremiah is lamenting about the exile of Judah- they are no longer occupying their land they are no longer prospering- their society is in ruins. Why? Many reasons- but one of the major ones is that they had become a bunch of liars. READ Jeremiah 9:3-6they have bent their tongues for lies, They are not valiant for the truth, every neighbor will walk with slanderers. Everyone will deceive his neighbor, And will not speak the truth; They have taught their tongue to speak lies; They weary themselves to commit iniquity. Here’s what is true- is that our God does not change. We are not Israel- but we are a nation. how God dealt with any nation in the past can give us indication of how he deals with nations. America was founded on the principles of Christianity. We have prospered as a nation because we held to Christian ideals.. We are no longer a Christian nation or society- we just arentEven when I was in Egypt in 2001 talking to Muslims they perceived us a Christian nation- then they would see our movies and tv shows and call us infidels based on how they saw us live when they considered us ChristiansThat was 20 years ago- gallup1938-98 70% attendance. Now 50%. 20% decline in past 20 yearsSo what is God going to do? READ Jeremiah 9:7-9 Behold, I will refine them and try them; 9 Shall I not punish them for these things?” says the Lord. “Shall I not avenge Myself on such a nation as this?”Again- we’re not Israel- but God doesn’t bless any nation that doesn’t bless him. don’t see itNations and persons cannot live lives against the truth and expect that God will bless themLiving a life of lies- being a liar- not keeping your word- changing your words- not speaking truthHow did they becoming a bunch of liars under judgement? Jeremiah 9:13-14Forsaken my law- walked according to the [f]dictates of their own heartTurned away from God and followed whatever their heart wantedWe are, as Americans living under God’s judgment. We have leaders who tell lies- Presidents, Governors, mayors. All of them. Local officials, federal officials, lies after liesWe have forsaken his law and turned away. Evil is celebrated. Lies are accepted. Now some would say “Pastor matt- seems like you’ve been talking a lot more about politics than you have in the past” things have changed. Society at large, not just politicians are trying to fundamentally change how you think about life and I’m trying to empower you to stayAnd I’m not being conspiratorial. Something that’s simple that doesn’t need to be lie is lied about and they want us to go along with their lies. Bush, Obama, Trump, Biden all of themin the truth of God’s word.
John 1:1-9In the beginningBefore time itself was measured, the Voice was speaking. The Voice was and is God.This celestial Word remained ever present with the Creator; His speech shaped the entire cosmos.Immersed in the practice of creating, all things that exist were birthed in Him.His breath filled all things with a living, breathing light—A light that thrives in the depths of darkness, blazes through murky bottoms. It cannot and will not be quenched.A man named John, who was sent by God, was the first to clearly articulate the source of this Light. This baptizer put in plain words the elusive mystery of the Divine Light so all might believe through him. Some wondered whether he might be the Light, but John was not the Light. He merely pointed to the Light. The true Light, who shines upon the heart of everyone, was coming into the cosmos.
ADVENT WEEK TWODecember 7, 2020Seek PeacePsalm 27You face, Lord, do I seek. Do not hide your face from me. Psalm 27:8b-9In whose face or faces do you see God?Seeking God’s face is a plea for God’s favor which leads to shalom, a sense of peace, security, and wholeness. And shalom is not an individual experience; it’s a state of being for all God’s creation.Nevertheless, individual peace and security that is not an end unto itself can be the beginning or the sustaining middle of a larger effort toward shalom-bringing. And when the soul grows weary under torment and constant struggle, it’s easy to join the psalmist’s loud cry, “Be gracious to me and answer me! … Your face, Lord, do I seek.”What we seek is not the kind of shallow peace that suggests everything is OK when it is definitely not OK,But the kind of deep peace that provides sustaining energy to stay engaged in the work of justice. What we seek is not the kind of resigning peace that encourages the acceptance of suffering because that’s just the way it is,But the kind of visionary peace that allows the imagining of a vibrant life free from torment and turmoil. What we seek is not the kind of powerless peace that gives permission for cozying up and hiding permanently in the corner while ignoring the struggles of people all around,But the kind of powerful peace that motivates and compels attentiveness to the world around and unrelenting action as a shalom-maker.As the psalmist declares, “I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!”Amen.Rev. “When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not recline at table in the place of honor. A more distinguished guest than you may have been invited by him, and the host who invited both of you may approach you and say, ‘Give your place to this man,’ and then you would proceed with embarrassment to take the lowest place.” Luke 14:8-9In telling this parable to those dining with Him at the Pharisee’s house, Jesus strikes a chord in their hearts. It is clear that His audience was filled with those who sought the esteem of others and were very concerned about their social reputation. It would have been a frightening thought for them to take the place of honor at a banquet only to be embarrassed by the host when asked to move to a lower spot. This humiliation was clear to those who were caught up in the world of social prestige. Jesus uses this embarrassing example as a way of highlighting their pride and the danger of living in such a prideful way. He goes on to say, “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”We can never examine our consciences often enough concerning pride. Pride is referred to as the “Mother of all sins” for a reason. Pride leads to every other sin and, in many ways, is the source of all sin. Therefore, if we want to strive for perfection in life, we should seek true humility on a daily basis.Humility is nothing other than seeing things as they are. A humble person sees him/herself in the truth of God. This can be hard to do because it requires that we see ourselves as weak and dependent upon God. We may be able to accomplish many worldly things through our own strength and hard work. But we cannot achieve happiness and goodness unless we open ourselves to the truth of our weaknesses and dependence upon God for all things. Humility also helps to purify our hearts of something that is very hard to let go of. Pride causes us to deeply seek out the esteem of others and to be dependent upon that esteem for our happiness. That’s a dangerous road to go down because it leaves us constantly dependent upon the opinions of others. And far too often, the opinions of others are based on false and superficial criteria.Reflect, today, upon how free you are from the misleading and false opinions of others. Sure, you need to regularly seek out advice from those you know and love. But you must allow yourself only to be dependent upon God and His Truth. When you do that, you will be well down the road of true humility.Lord, please make me humble. Strip away all pride in my life so that I can turn to You and Your will alone. Help me to have concern only for the Truth that You establish and to use that as the only measure of my soul. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2020 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Used with permission via RSS feed.

Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:1-9In the introduction of the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians we can find hidden gems that are particular important to all of us. From how we should approach a problem that needs to be corrected to how we are called to use the gifts that the Lord has bestowed upon us, this is a message that should not be missed, as it sets the pace for the whole letter and makes an important difference in the way we interact with one another.
Isaiah 63:7–14 7I will recount the steadfast love of the Lord, the praises of the Lord, according to all that the Lord has granted us, and the great goodness to the house of Israel that he has granted them according to his compassion, according to the abundance of his steadfast love. 8For he said, “Surely they are my people, children who will not deal falsely.” And he became their Savior. 9In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them; in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old. 10But they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit; therefore he turned to be their enemy, and himself fought against them. 11Then he remembered the days of old, of Moses and his people. Where is he who brought them up out of the sea with the shepherds of his flock? Where is he who put in the midst of them his Holy Spirit, 12who caused his glorious arm to go at the right hand of Moses, who divided the waters before them to make for himself an everlasting name, 13who led them through the depths? Like a horse in the desert, they did not stumble. 14Like livestock that go down into the valley, the Spirit of the Lord gave them rest. So you led your people, to make for yourself a glorious name.

“Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come! Hosanna in the highest!” Mark 11:9In today’s Liturgy we face quite a contrast of experiences and emotions. We begin our celebration listening to the story of Jesus being welcomed into Jerusalem with great joy and exultation! “Hosanna!” they cried out. “Hosanna in the Highest!” Jesus was treated as He should have been treated. People were excited to see Him and there was much excitement. But this excitement quickly turned to shock and horror as we enter more deeply into today’s readings. The Gospel culminates with Jesus hanging on the Cross crying out “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” And with that, “Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.” At that moment the entire congregation kneels in silence as we ponder the reality of Christ’s death. How things can change in one short week. What happened to all the people who were shouting and praising Him as He entered into Jerusalem? How could they allow Him to enter into this Crucifixion and death? The deepest answer to this question is one that we may not expect. The answer is that the Father willed it. The Father willed, by His permissive will, that so many would turn on Him, abandon Him and allow Him to be crucified. This is so very important to understand. At any time during that first Holy Week, Jesus could have exercised His divine power and refused to embrace His Cross. But He didn’t. Instead, He willingly walked through this week anticipating and embracing the suffering and rejection He received. And He didn’t do so begrudgingly or even with regret. He embraced this week willingly, choosing it as His own will. Why would He do such a thing? Why would He choose suffering and death? Because in the Father’s perfect wisdom, this suffering and death was for a greater purpose. God chose to confound the wisdom of the world by using His own suffering and Crucifixion as the perfect means of our holiness. In this act, He transformed the greatest evil into the greatest good. Now, as a result of our faith in this act, the crucifix hangs centrally in our churches and in our homes as a constant reminder that not even the greatest of evils can overcome the power, wisdom and love of God. God is more powerful than death itself and God has the final victory even when all seems lost.Let this week give you divine hope. So often we can be tempted toward discouragement and, even worse, we can be tempted toward despair. But all is not lost for us either. Nothing can ultimately steal away our joy unless we let it. No hardship, no burden and no cross can conquer us if we remain steadfast in Christ Jesus letting Him transform all we endure in life by His glorious embrace of His own Cross.Reflect, today, upon the contrast of emotions from Palm Sunday through Good Friday. Ponder the fear, confusion and despair that many would have had as they saw Jesus murdered. Reflect, also, upon this being a divine act by which the Father permitted this grave suffering so as to use it for the greatest good ever known. The Lord gave His life freely and calls you to do the same. Reflect upon the cross in your life. Know that the Lord can use this for good, bringing forth an abundance of mercy through your free embrace as you offer it to Him as a willing sacrifice. Blessed Holy Week! Put your eyes upon the Lord’s Cross as well as your own.Lord, when I am tempted to despair, give me hope. Help me to see your presence in all things, even in those things that are most troubling to me. May this Holy Week transform my darkest moments and weakness as I surrender all to You, my God. Jesus, I trust in You.
God is Love — 1 John 4:7-5:5 7Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. 9In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. 10In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us. 13By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. 14And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world. 15Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him. 17Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. 18There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. 19We love Him because He first loved us. 20If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? 21And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also. 1Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. 2By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. 3For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. 4For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world— our faith. 5Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? I. What does it mean to have "KNOWLEDGE OF GOOD AND EVIL"? "9In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil…And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” - Genesis 9:-17 What IS CHILDLIKE FAITH? HONEST, not IGNORANT HUMBLE, not SELF-RIGHTEOUS INNOCENT, not NAÏVE SIMPLE, not SIMPLISTIC CURIOUS, not COCKY "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." - Matthew 18:3
Genesis 2:1-9, Matthew 27:37-51, Revelation 22:1-5Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church from the book of Genesis, Matthew, and Revelation:Genesis 2:1-9In the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, 5 when no plant of the field was yet in the earth and no herb of the field had yet sprung up—for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no one to till the ground; 6 but a stream would rise from the earth, and water the whole face of the ground— 7 then the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being. 8 And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9 Out of the ground the Lord God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food, the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.Matthew 27: 37-5137 Over his head they put the charge against him, which read, “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.”38 Then two bandits were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. 39 Those who passed by derided him, shaking their heads 40 and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” 41 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking him, saying, 42 “He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him. 43 He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he wants to; for he said, ‘I am God’s Son.’” 44 The bandits who were crucified with him also taunted him in the same way.45 From noon on, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. 46 And about three o’clock Jesus cried with a loud voice, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”Jesus cried again with a loud voice and breathed his last. 51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, and the rocks were split.Revelation 22Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. 3 Nothing accursed will be found there any more. But the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him; 4 they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 And there will be no more night; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God
This lecture is based upon a Khutbah of Shaykh Uthaymeen. “Save yourselves and your families from the Fire by opening the doors of good to your family”. Despite the pen being lifted upon the child, and them not being held accountable for missing obligatory actions, their good deeds are written down for them. So you should encourage them to perform good deeds, even have your children compete with another in righteous actions. We should also warn and make clear to our children all aspects of falsehood. Due to the Hadeeth in which the Prophet Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam said: “All of you are shepherds and each one of you is responsible for his flock” The origin with the Salaf was that the Kataateeb (Schools) were at home. The adults taught at home what they had learnt in the lessons in the masaajid. Teaching them the pillars of Islam, Imaan and other foundations of the religion. Sow the seed of love and magnification of Allaah in their hearts. Make clear to them the many blessings of Allaah upon them, the clear and hidden blessings. The specific and general blessings. Mention the signs of Allaah to them. Likewise sow the seed of love for the Messenger Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam in their hearts and explain to them the good that came for this Ummah at his hands. Teach your children to be truthful in their actions and speech. So do not lie to them when you speak to them. If you promise them, do not break these promises. If they see you lying to them then they will begin to lie. Or if they see you being lax in keeping promises then likewise they will become lax. Sow the seed of love for the believers in their heart. Make it clear that the believers are like one body. We can encourage or children upon learning and memorising by offering a reward. Encourage those children that are capable to read the books of tafsir like the Tafsir of Imam As Sa’di and the sound, correct books of History of Islam. Warn them from reading the harmful books that can harm the Aqeedah of an individual and his mannerisms. It is important to teach your children about evil. As the one who does not know the evil, will fall into it. 9In the Hadeeth of Hudayfah Ibn Al Yamaan: “The people used to ask the Prophet Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam about the good, but I used to ask him about the evil, fearing to fall into it. “ Indeed our responsibility in front of Allaah as it relates to our children and families is great so we ask Allaah - the One who burdened us with this responsibility - that he grants us success to rectify and correct ourselves and our families. As the Ummah is made up of its individuals.
elcome to Shepherd of the Lakes! We’re here to shepherd Christ’s flock and seek the lost sheep by sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with all. Come, let us worship! For your convenience, in the back corner of the sanctuary there is a room for any parents with children in need of a quiet place. The restrooms are located on the lower level. Please ask if you have any further questions or concerns. Lord Jesus, you took on our humanity in order to live under the law and redeem us. Grant that I always marvel at your grace, and receive you with joy; AMEN.The Role of the Law in the Life of the Christian:The whole world with all diligence has struggled to figure out what God is, what He has in mind and does. Yet the world has never been able to grasp ‹the knowledge and understanding of› any of these things. But here [in the Apostles’ Creed] we have everything in richest measure. For here in all three articles God has revealed Himself and opened the deepest abyss of His fatherly heart and His pure, inexpressible love [Ephesians 3:18–19]. He has created us for this very reason, that He might redeem and sanctify us. In addition to giving and imparting to us everything in heaven and upon earth, He has even given to us His Son and the Holy Spirit, who brings us to Himself [Romans 8:14, 32]. For we could never grasp the knowledge of the Father’s grace and favor except through the Lord Christ. Jesus is a mirror of the fatherly heart [John 14:9; Colossians 1:15; Hebrews 1:3], outside of whom we see nothing but an angry and terrible Judge. But we couldn’t know anything about Christ either, unless it had been revealed by the Holy Spirit [1 Corinthians 2:12]. Large Catechism, Apostles’ Creed (Concordia p. 406)Born to Save Us:There is nothing trite or trivial in what has happened at Christmas: The deepest lowliness is but the mask for the greatest glory, the glory of him who came to be our Savior! How does the birth of Christ comfort & encourage us?OPENING HYMN: 56 – Gentle Mary Laid Her ChildLITURGY: Service of Word & Sacrament, CW p. 26Please rise.PRAYER OF THE DAY:M: Almighty God, grant that the birth of your one and only Son in the flesh may set us free from our old bondage under the yoke of sin; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. The WordFIRST READING: Isaiah 52:7-10God has kept his word: Hidden in the lowliness of the manger is the glory of God for our salvation. 7How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of a herald, who proclaims peace and preaches good news, who proclaims salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God is king!” 8The voice of your watchmen—they lift up their voices. Together they shout for joy, because with both eyes they will see it when the LORD returns to Zion. 9Break out, shout for joy together, you ruins of Jerusalem, because the LORD is comforting his people. He is redeeming Jerusalem. 10The LORD lays bare his holy arm before the eyes of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth will see the salvation from our God. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!PSALM: 98, p. 103SECOND READING: Hebrews 1:1-9In the manger, we see Eternal God in the form of a baby:In the past, God spoke to our forefathers by the prophets at many times and in many ways. 2In these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. 3The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact imprint of the divine nature. He sustains all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he took his seat at the right hand of the Majesty on high. 4The Son became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. 5For to which of the angels did God ever say: You are my Son. Today I have begotten you? And again: I will be his Father, and he will be my Son. 6And again, when he brought his firstborn into the world, he said: Let all God’s angels worship him. 7About the angels he says: He makes his messengers winds and his ministers flaming fire. 8But about the Son he says: God, your throne is forever and ever, and the scepter of righteousness is the scepter of your kingdom. 9You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of joy beyond your companions. THEME VERSE: Galatians 4:4-5Alleluia. When the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law. Alleluia. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! These words are written that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! GOSPEL READING: John 1:1-14As the manger and the Virgin’s arms held him whom the heaven of heavens cannot contain, so we too recognize and receive him who has come in human flesh and blood to dwell in us through the Word and sacrament:In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning. 3Through him everything was made, and without him not one thing was made that has been made. 4In him was life, and the life was the light of mankind. 5The light is shining in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 6There was a man, sent from God, whose name was John. 7He came as an eyewitness to testify about the light so that everyone would believe through him. 8He was not the light, but he came to testify about the light. 9The real light that shines on everyone was coming into the world. 10He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not recognize him. 11He came to what was his own, yet his own people did not accept him. 12But to all who did receive him, to those who believe in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. 13They were born, not of blood, or of the desire of the flesh, or of a husband’s will, but born of God. 14The Word became flesh and dwelled among us. We have seen his glory, the glory he has as the only-begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. 2 Peter 2:4-9In the midst of trials and temptations, we can be comforted, because God will deliver the believers, and He will judge the world.
