Hey this is Steve and welcome back to another segment of Press On. This is call Paul Paul Revere. Not long ago my wife and I along with our good friends hiked a trail between Lexington and Concord Yes, that trail was a portion of the route that Paul Revere took on a dark April night in 1775.As we hiked that trail an image that came to mind...one of a guy who braves the possibility of being captured, imprisoned or even killed rides his horse to bring important news to others. In fact Revere was intercepted and detained by a British patrol between Lexington and Concord. Typically we would define persevere as just trying to hang on with the goal of simply surviving...sounds negative but is that the biblical image of persevere? No, perseverance is the act of continuing to do something even though the task is difficult. ... Paul describes perseverance as being "steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord" (1 Corinthians 15:58).In James letter he adds these critical details...the promise of "the crown of life" to those who, by their perseverance, show their love for God ( 1:12 ). Here's why persevering is more than just hanging on.First, because there is a finish line and at that line awaits the “crown of life.” The promise that in this life and the next there is meaning, purpose and value...and when that last breath leaves our body there is life eternal.Secondly, those who persevere demonstrate their confidence and trust in the Lord. There is much more to this story but for today think about this:Perseverance is not a desperate act of simply trying to survive...it's an offensive measure that denies the enemy victory by setting your heart and mind on the eternal not the temporal. This is Steve and until we meet again Press On…when you do so you might just start a revolution See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Scripture For Today:Psalm 4:1“Answer me when I call to you, my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer.”What James Had to Say About Prayer pt 10We have been studying what the Apostle James had to say about prayer. We have been studying the verses from James 5:13-18: “Is any among you afflicted? Let him pray. Is any Merry? Let him sing psalms. Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the Name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he has committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that you may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Elijah was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain, and it did not rain on the earth by the space of three years and six months! And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain and the earth brought forth her fruit.” We've been studying about verse 15 and 16 these last few days. Mainly about the importance of someone confessing their sins to God and placing themselves, the Bible says, “cleansing ourselves,” in right-standing with God so we can be in position to receive our prayers as answered. James concludes verse 16 by saying, “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” Then, in verse 17, James gives us an example of a righteous man. At first, when I read those scriptures, I did not understand what point James was trying to make! After pondering it for a bit, I realized EXACTLY what he was trying to get across to us! James was saying the Elijah was a human man, just as we are. In other words, Elijah did not receive the answers to his prayers because he was some kind of super prophet. We may THINK he is – but the point James is trying to get us to understand is – he WASN'T! In James 5:17, he clearly says, “Elisha (speaking of Elijah) WAS A MAN…” That gives hope for you and me! Praise God! Let's read the entire verse: “Elijah was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain, and it did not rain on the earth by the space of three years and six months! And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain and the earth brought forth her fruit.” You may say, “Yeah, BUT… Elijah WAS a prophet. And that was the Prophet Elijah praying! I'm not a prophet – I'm just lil' ol' me!” Yes, Elijah was a prophet. He was a great man of God. And he certainly was righteous! But James said he was a man, what? “subject to like passions as we are!” He faced the same challenges we face each and every day! He was just like us! Amen! James did not say, “Elijah was a prophet who knew how to pray!” He did not say, “Elijah was a prophet who had special favor with God!” James did not say anything like that about Elijah, did he? NO! He said, “Elijah was a man just like us!” Praise God! I'm going to stop there for today. I want you to think about that. Amen! Let's Pray! Scripture For Today: Daniel 6:13“Then they said to the king, “Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah, pays no attention to you, Your Majesty, or to the decree you put in writing. He still prays three times a day.”What James Had to Say About Prayer pt 3We have been studying what the Apostle James had to say about prayer. We had been studying, quite extensively, what the Apostle Paul had to say about prayer, but now I want to expand that into what other Apostle had to say – and we started with James, the brother of Jesus. We left off yesterday about the importance of praying for yourself and not always relying on the others to pray for you! When you learn to do your own praying, that is when you will move over into greater and greater victories. Amen! Every time you pray for yourself and you see your prayers as answered – your Faith grows exponentially! But if you depend on others to pray for you, YOUR faith actually gets weaker! Why? Because you are not exercising your faith! Think of it as working out physically for a minute… Let's say you know you should be working out, lifting weights and all of that, but you're just too busy. You really don't have the time. You have so many other things to accomplish, you just cannot afford the 30 minutes every day you know you should be working out. Then, one night, an intruder comes into your home and threatens your family! You tell him, WAIT HERE, I have to go call the police! Or, WAIT HERE – and you run downstairs and start to lift some weights so you can become strong enough to fight him! Either one of those scenarios will not play out very well for you – OR YOUR FAMILY! They were depending on YOU to protect them! And you let them down! Now, think about what would have happened IF you had been working out on your own for a few years before that night when an intruder came into your home… You could have resisted him and, seeing he could be in trouble trying to fight you – he would flee! Amen! What does the bible say, “Resist the devil and he will what? FLEE!” Amen! And guess who said that? JAMES! Praise God! In James chapter 4 verse 7! Amen! But, if you never worked out – the moment you needed that physical strength, that moment your family needed you – you would have been weak and unable to perform your duty to protect them. The same can be said for Spiritual strength! If you never work out yourself Spiritually, you will be WEAK when it comes time for you to pray for yourself or your family member. And that is not how it is supposed to be! Amen! I want to pray for you that you will begin to take your prayer time with the Lord seriously! This is not just a “check the box and done” type of thing. It can be, literally, a matter of life or death for you or a member of your family. Let's Pray! Scripture For Today: Colossians 4:3“And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains.” What James Had to Say About Prayer pt 1For the last several sessions during the past month, we studied what the Apostle Paul taught us about prayer. That does not mean other Disciples did not teach about prayer. I did not want to infer that at all. So, let's see what some others have taught us in the Word about prayer. We will start with the Apostle James, the Lord's brother. In James 5:13-18, we read: “Is any among you afflicted? Let him pray. Is any Merry? Let him sing psalms. Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the Name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he has committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to another, and pray on for another, that you may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous availeth much. Elijah was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain, and it did not rain on the earth by the space of three years and six months! And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain and the earth brought forth her fruit.” Notice here, what James had to say about prayer. He asks three separate questions in this passage of scripture. First, he asks, “Is there any of you afflicted?” Next, he asks, “Is there any of you that are merry (or happy and blessed)? Finally, he asks, “Is there any of you that are sick?” James was talking about three different thing. For example, “afflicted” and “sick” are not the same thing. These two words as used here cannot mean the same thing because James gave two different sets of instructions, one for each of those words. He gave one instruction for the “afflicted” (Let him pray) and a different instruction for someone who was “sick” (call for the elders of the church to pray for him). The Greek word for “afflicted” in James 5:13 is not referring to illness. It is not referring to, what we call “physical afflictions” at all. “Afflicted” in this verse means “to suffer trouble.” In other words, this type of affliction is a test or trial of your faith. James was saying that if YOU, as a believer, are being tested or tried by what we call the “storms of life,” YOU are to do YOUR OWN PRAYING. But far too many Christians are so weak knee in their Faith, they call for others to pray for them over every little thing. Most Christians, when they are facing a test or trial of some kind, instead of going straight to the Lord in prayer; instead of taking Spiritual authority over the situation using their own Faith, they call for OTHERS to do their praying FOR THEM! Notice here, James did not say one word about getting someone else to pray for you if YOU are afflicted, tried or tested. Not ONE WORD AT ALL. Did you ever stop to think about that? I'm going to stop there for today. I want you to ponder – and pray – about what we learned today. This will revolutionize your prayer life! As we said before, when you start to pray according to how the BIBLE says we are to pray – you will begin to see the results the Bible says you will have. It's amazing how that works, right? Letting God Be Lord Over Your Finances, which Are His but He Entrusted to You, Will Liberate Your Life! MESSAGE SUMMARY: We are so focused on earning money and other financially driven life activities so that it is easy for money and finances to become our god. Making finances “our god” violates the Second Commandment. If Jesus is Lord over all Creation, as we are told in Psalms 24:1, then: “The earth is the LORD's and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein. For He has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.”; therefore, everything that has been entrusted to you is God's. In James 5:1-3, the author of the Book of James provides insight into someone who does NOT make God the Lord of their finances: “Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days.”. Therefore, let God Be Lord over your finances, which really are His finances. TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, I now take a deep breath and stop. So often I miss your hand and gifts in my life because I am preoccupied and anxious. Grant me the power to pause each day and each week to simply rest in your arms of love. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 132). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM A CHILD OF GOD. Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His Name, He gave the right to become children of God-- children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. In James 2-1-8, we see the command -vv. 1-4-, the reason -vv. 5-7-, and the exhortation -v. 8-.
This talk from Revolution Minneapolis Brien continues to dive into the book of James. In this talk we focus on James 2:1-10. What does this portion of scripture say to us as modern readers and hearers of this message? In James 2 we can see that it is a dualism of being poor/rich, and how do we deal with it. The main thrust of this talk is how no one should show favoritism toward one another, but often times the church gives favor to those who have the money and riches we so crave. But today in our materialistic society, envy is almost considered a virtue. Advertisers spend billions to convince you that you're not happy with your lot in life. However, make no mistake, the Bible still calls envy a sin. Let's start with a definition. This is from an evangelical dictionary, Envy is the sin of jealousy over the blessings and achievements of others.' That's pretty straightforward and it tells us that the words envy and jealousy are interchangeable. Why is envy a sin? Because God's Word says so in several places. But most notably, as in the 10th Commandment in Exodus 20:17: You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's. And of course, covet is another word for envy. Like the sin of pride, envy also leads to many other sins. In James 4:2-3, we find,You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. There's a difference between envy and the proper motivation to better one's life. For the one, you're willing to work hard and you're content with what the Lord provides. But with envy, you feel entitled and deprived. You feel that someone, namely God, owes you something. Envy is ugly and destructive. James 3:16 tells us, For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. Envy or jealousy is a powerful emotion that we must always be on guard against.Proverbs 27:4 warns, Wrath is cruel, anger is overwhelming, but who can stand before jealousy? So how do you know if envy has taken hold in your life? Look at your finances. Are you living beyond your means? Are you running up credit card debt to finance a lifestyle that you can't afford? In James 5:19-20, we look at the need for mature Christians to help restore people back to Jesus.
In James 3, James teaches us how powerful our tongues are. Like a rudder that steers a large ship, or a spark that turns into a forest fire, our tongues have the power to impact lives around us. Not only are they powerful, but they are also difficult to control. We've seen how destructive words can be, but the power of our tongues can also be used to give life and build people up. However, we know that behavior modification does not work or help us long term. Jesus says, from our heart the mouth speaks, revealing what's inside of us. In order for us to use the gift and the power that God has given us, we must allow God's love to transform our hearts. In doing so, we become mature followers of Jesus; gracious in speech, positively impacting people around us, the future, and ourselves. “If you claim to be religious but don't control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless.” -James 1:26 (NLT)- Ethos is a life-giving community committed to keeping Jesus at its Center. In James 1:22, James uses the term but (dé) to imply that there is more to do with the Word of Truth. Listening to the Word is critical to accepting and applying the Word, but it is not enough. It is not sufficient to just be a mere listener or hearer of the Word. Believers must be hearers who are doers of the Word. Thus, in James 1:22-25, James shows that there are two types of hearers. There are hearers of the Word who are deceived and there are hearers of the Word who are doers. In his final analysis, James reveals that only those believers who are doers of the Word will be blessed.
In James 1:22 we learn that we have to be “…doers of the word and not hearer only…” Your faith will be evident by your actions. Today let's learn to strengthen our faith and live life victoriously. Today let's learn to strengthen our faith and live life victoriously.
For the remainder of chapter one, James turns his focus to the Word of Truth. In James 1:22-27, James will encourage his readers to be doers of the Word. First, however, James teaches, in James 1:19-21, believers how to receive the Word of Truth, which has been implanted in their heart. Believers receive the Word of Truth by accepting the Scriptures and applying to their lives.
In James 1:16-18, James confronts his fellow believers with the fact that they have been deceived and have fallen victim to temptations. However, James seeks their highest good and thus explains to them how to how victory over temptations. He prescribes three steps for believers to be victorious — avoid deception, affirm God's goodness, and accept God's purposes.

In James 1:12-15, James sets out to distinguish between outward trials and inward temptations. While having written, at length, about outward trials, James lays out the rewards for believers who endure them. He then examines the issue of the inward temptations with which believers struggle. Notably, James explains the true source of the inward temptations. Perhaps in understanding the source of temptations, believers will be better prepared to escape them. As well, by understanding the reward of trials, believers will be better equipped to endure them.
Would the people close to you say you keep your word? In James 5:12, we learn the importance of not taking the Lord's Name in vain and how we ought to follow through with what we say we will do.
We have a powerful topic today of Not Being Corrupted. In James 1:27, there is a powerful part of the verse that says, "refusing to let the world corrupt you." It is so easy to get caught in the distractions and complications of the world, but it is important to remain strong in God and let His Holy Spirit guide you.
Believers need wisdom to navigate the trials with strength and character. Some may wonder why not pray for strength to endure or even deliverance from the trial. While believers can undoubtedly pray for strength and deliverance, they first need wisdom from God not to miss God’s purpose in the trial or waste the opportunity for spiritual growth. As well, wisdom is needed to know how to persevere and endure. In James 1:5-8, James explains to his readers how to obtain wisdom to navigate trials.
In James 1:22-27 we are challenged to live out the word of God, to no simply be hearer of the word.Song of the Week: Sufficient For Me - Johnathan Ogdenhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNQmFDqP1Xw (Lyrics)

Maybe you have been praying for a long time and it seems there is no change. Do not give up! In James 5: 17-18, Elijah wanted to change the cause of nature. He prayed earnestly and there was a change. The same Scripture lets us know that he was a man, like us. There are many cases of men who prevailed in prayers and received extraordinary results. Jacob wrestled with the angel. Daniel prayed for twenty-one days. The list goes on.
By Wisdom from above vs earthly wisdom James 3:13-18 In James 1:5 We were encouraged to ask God if we lack wisdom. What does godly wisdom look like? Wisdom from above is gentle, pure, peaceable, reasonable, full of mercy, full of good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy. Wisdom of this world has bitter jealousy; has selfish ambition; is arrogant; lies against Continue Reading
In James 4, we will learn about the war that takes place in the soul of every Christian. The war between the Spirit and the flesh. It is an all out fight! And what you need to win is in James 4:6, a greater grace. This is a special grace that goes beyond salvation and James lays out how you and I can experience this greater grace.
In this message, Pastor Kyle reminds us of Our Best Defense against the Enemy. Every war requires a battle plan, and the spiritual war for our soul is no different. In James 4:7-8, we're given a great blueprint for a plan to resist temptation to sin. Listen in for some hard truths about our flawed thinking when it comes to sin, and how we can change that thinking to help resist temptation and ultimately become more like Christ. To stay up to date on the latest Renovation Church news, make sure you "like" us on Facebook and check in regularly on our website: https://renovatethecity.com
What we say, how we day it, and why we say it has a tremendous impact on how people view us and influence we have. In James 3, he cautions us about how we use our words. We live in a time where everyone is an expert, so it is vital that we handle the Word carefully, because the enemy will try to hinder accurate communication of the Bible. So it is essential that we guard what comes out of our mouths. Using the analogies of a horse, a ship and a fire, James calls us to examine whether our tongue is in charge, or we have Spirit-led control over it, using it to strengthen others.

Is knowing about God enough? If I want to 'Walk It Like I Talk It,' can I how serious do I have to be about faith? In James 4 we see just how serious we may need to get, and what that really means. Who knows...maybe our choices can even move us from knowing about God to truly knowing him. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
You shall LOVE.Most important command in the OT gives the object: God Himself. TaDa! You get to be in relationship with HIM. Wowser.2nd most important command in the OT gives the same command YOU SHALL LOVE but a different object: PEOPLE. neighbors. the least. the greatest. the foreigners. the poor. the rich. the handicapped externally. the handicapped internally. those who you are even fighting with.WHY? All this sounds pretty hard unless we keep something in mind. What is that? Commandment #1. We Love the LORD best when we love His CHILDREN best. In fact, if we go back to the original in Leviticus, it says this right after Love your neighbor as yourself: I AM THE LORD. ie: Don't forget command and relationship #1 while you are considering and dealing with the messy command and relationship #2.Funny, In James 2, the NEIGHBOR command is called the ROYAL LAW, not the GOD command. James must have really gotten the concept. Listen and let's all do this right today. Find out what The Martian has to do with all of this. www.Bewithme.us.
If Jesus Followers Let God Be Lord Over Their Finances, which He Entrusted to Them, Their Lives Will Be Liberated MESSAGE SUMMARY: We are so focused on earning money and other financially driven life activities so that it is easy for money and finances to become our god. Making finances “our god” violates the Second Commandment. If Jesus is Lord over all Creation, as we are told in Psalms 24:1, then: “The earth is the LORD's and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein. For He has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.”; therefore, everything that has been entrusted to you is God’s. TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM A CHILD OF GOD. Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His Name, He gave the right to become children of God-- children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. (John 1:12f). SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Psalms 24:1-10; James 5:1-6; Psalms 25:1-22; Psalms 45:1-17. In a day when people confuse information with truth the need for true wisdom has never been greater. How do we recognize whether our thinking, speaking and acting is being transformed by the wisdom of God or whether it is simply being conformed to the wisdom of this fallen world- In James 3-17-18 we are given a clear description of the kind of wisdom that comes from God. Worldly wisdom creates more problems than it solves. Only God's wisdom shows the way to true peace with the promise of a rich harvest of righteousness.
In James 2:14-26, many people get confused by how James uses faith along with works. In this episode, Jason clears up the confusion by teaching exegetically what James meant by comparing active faith from a dead faith.
Prayer is a struggle for many of us. How do I pray? What do I pray for? How do I know my prayers will be answered? We should not feel alone in this because even the Lord’s disciples struggled with how to pray. They asked in Luke 11:1, “Lord teach us to pray.” In this episode we look at five key prayer principles that can draw us closer to God and make prayer more practical. How can we make it part of our everyday lives and see the power that prayer provides. Thanks to Words in Season for the cover art. Check out the etsy shop for cards, stickers and prints. Episode Notes You may be surprised to know that over 600 prayers are recorded in the Bible with over 450 revealed answers associated with those prayers. So the Bible has a lot to say about prayer and the principles of prayer which can really help us in very practical ways as we offer prayer. What we learn as we look at prayer is that prayer has a purpose. Seems like an odd thing to say, of course they do, otherwise why am I praying. Actually, what we see is that prayers are made with an expectant result in mind. First, what is PRAYER? A person who did a lot of study on this subject once gave this definition and I think it is a good one, “prayer is the raising of the heart and mind to God … in short communication with God on high.” Prayer is an incredible gift God has given us in that we are able to talk to him and in turn as we read His word the Bible, He talks to us…communication takes place. How do we learn to pray? … that ultimately comes by doing it, by practice. Some view prayer like a 911 call only to be used in the case of emergencies. If they get what they ask for they may or may not express thankfulness and let that lead them into a better understanding of prayer. But if they do not get what they asked for, they question whether prayer works or worse whether religion is worthwhile or not. If we view prayer as something only to be used in times of trouble or we doubt whether prayers are heard because we did not get the answer we asked, if we are not sure what to pray for or even how to go to about praying altogether … we hope our thoughts together will help either change our view of prayer or provide us with a more focused direction on what to pray for and how to go about it. The Lord tells us we have only 2 real choices on this subject … Prayer Principle 1 - We Pray or we Faint! So one of the first Key Principles of Prayer we learn is: that prayer needs to be consistent and constant … Luke 18:1 “And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;” We either pray rightly or lose heart …faint. (Gk ekkakeo “to be utterly spiritless, wearied out, exhausted”) … that is how critical prayer really is. If we do not pray we faint. Notice the Lord says “ought” to pray… it is our duty to pray, an obligation, absolutely necessary for our spiritual health. WE NEED GOD’S HELP - our attitude to that fact, affects how we pray and if we pray … need to see how important prayer really is to us As we look at Principles regarding prayer, we need to be aware of one of the major challenges we face today (this challenge has a major effect on us as well as our children, young people in general) … that being in society today we are so far removed from absolute dependence on God. This then results in an adverse affect on our prayers. Let me illustrate what I mean by this by looking at what I call the Lettuce effect. Where does a head of lettuce come from? If you were to ask a child (and I did) they will tell you it comes from the store! Some adults might think the same way as well!! We live in an age that is less dependent on the land. Very few if any of us are farmers. So easily for us to overlook our need for God and overlook our material blessings & dependence on Him. Man has created his own light system and water systems all driving us further from God dependence. We have created an infrastructure that is comprised of seed warehouses, sorting areas, refrigerated warehouses, transportation to move things vast distances so we can bring our lettuce from Mexico or even further away. Reality is that God is at the source of everything. No seedling, no food. We need to rekindle that absolute dependence on GOD, a recognition that we depend on Him for everything THIS is a vital part of prayer. God dependence. We have a Father in heaven that supplies our needs … Here then is the absolute starting point for prayer … prayer requires a faithful belief in God’s existence and that He is the provider of all we require Prayer Principle 2 – Believe that GOD Hears Another key Principle of Prayer some might say is actually the most important one is outlined for us in the Epistle to the Hebrews - Hebrews 11:6 “ But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to GOD must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” Need faith, (Faith in GOD) this must exist before prayer is really prayer at all. Prayer Principle 3 – There is a Way to Pray (Pray the right way) Another principle of prayer is the way in which we address our prayers and the purpose behind them. We learn about this from the instruction Paul gives in the epistle to the Ephesians 5:20 “Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” Need the right spirit (humble - thankful) … recognize that God is the great Creator and that he is our Father …and that our prayers are offered in the name of LJC It is also critical since we are praying in our Lord’s name that our prayers need to be in accord with God’s purpose. Our prayers then need to be aligned with our Heavenly Father’s will (One of the most vital of all the Prayer Principles)… we need to understand what that is. If they are aligned … we can have full assurance they will be answered. “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us” 1 John 5:14 Creates in us confidence that prayers are heard and that they are powerful. Our petitions need to be in harmony with the purpose of God. In this way prayers are conditional … “Thy will be done” as our LJC says. To be fair, sometimes we may not even be aware of what the LORDS will is … at least acknowledge that we want His will to be done versus our own. This leads us into considering what is the will of God vs what is our own will? We can illustrate this with a simple example we all can relate to in dealing with our NEEDS vs WANTS. What do we really need vs what do we want? This is a topic we many times get wrong. Our basic NEEDS, God looks after them all for us. Roof over our head (place to live) - Food and water - Sufficient Health & Hygiene - Clothing to keep us warm or protected. WANTS - are anything beyond that - we want a Mansion don’t need it! designer clothes, fancy car etc. We need to pray that God will provide us with what we need since he as a Loving Father knows best. If God gave us everything we wanted we would be in deep trouble. Sometimes we can pray for what God doesn't want. We are not teaching God in our prayers but beseeching Him. Some things to avoid. Need not be long although some occasions may require it (personal prayer perhaps). Not repetitive - spontaneous with meaning - as the Lord says “for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of before ye ask” (Matt 6:8) - fact of divine foreknowledge does not make those prayers any less necessary for us or any less real to God. Need not be showy in prayers as the Pharisees did on the street In fact, praying in the right way is critical to developing a personal prayer life. Think of a children's prayer - they are very honest (they thank God for everything and pray for everyone - not encumbered by doubts & obstacles we as adults see) Childlike - humility, trust, dependence The greatest obstacle to sincere praise is our pride and adult "wisdom" which is often little more than conceited ignorance. When we are humbled, we are in the position to offer the greatest praise. Prayer with the right attitude: Make our words brief Matthew 6:7 / Humility Luke 18:13 / Be specific Philippians 4:6 / Reverential Ecclesiastes 5:2 / Habitually 1 Thessalonians 5:17 Prayer Principle 4 – Listen or God Won’t There is also then a negative principle that is also true of Prayer… Sometimes this is caused by mixing up needs and wants. In other words we pray for the wrong reasons or we have an impediment making our prayers ineffective towards GOD. In James’ epistle we are told of such a conditional principle of prayer “Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.” (James 4:3) The believers in the 1st century were asking for the wrong reasons. They wanted something that they could use for their own selfish ends. They were not getting an answer to their prayers as a result Our treatment of others we can be challenge our receiving answers to our prayers: Want mercy, must be merciful. Prayer is difficult when we have a grudge against God or what he wants us to do. Need to get wrong things out of our lives…otherwise prayers will be difficult. (ex. unconfessed sin) This is an area of prayer we don’t often talk that much about. But God’s word is clear that there are times when prayers are not heard: When pride is prevalent Job 35: 12 When iniquity is in our heart Psalms 66:18 If we forsake God Judges 10: 11-13 REFUSE to listen to God’s word Proverbs 28:9 “ He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination” Wilfully disobedient Isaiah 1:15 Pray for selfish reasons James 4:3 What are some practical ways to help us pray for the right reasons: - ask ourselves, what is the Higher Principle I need to think about in this prayer - is it forgiveness? is it love? is it health … for what reason? - how can what I ask for or say, Give God glory, or ensure that He is glorified in what I’m requesting. - is what I ask for Aligned with His will and if I’m unsure at least acknowledge in sincerity we want it to be according to His will and therefore we will be accepting of His answer because He knows better than we do. - How does what we ask for advance His purpose? how can I make my prayers more for others and less about myself? Prayer Principle 5 – Prayer Works (God Answers Prayers) Ephesians 3:20,21 "Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, 21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen." - even more can be achieved than what we can even ask or think! - need for prayer comes by recognition we need God’s grace (all He has done for us) … we cannot do things on our own (recognition of our weakness & dependency) - that is why Ephesians 3:20, 21 is so powerful, we have limits, God does not …in times of joy, sadness and depression He is the only one who understands us and can help us … it is the method that God has given us to talk (communicate) with HIM GOD answers our prayers … but His answers may come in different ways: TIME is the challenge, different for us versus GOD (need to see things from God’s eyes/ perspective where time is not limited - see time & opportunity are in God’s hand) we tend to view time as a clock that goes around and around. Life is more like the old fashioned hour glass. For us it runs out. For God time is infinite … no beginning or end, forever. Need to keep this in mind when it comes to answers to our prayers. A couple of ways we get answers to our prayers: Yes (sometimes so fast we may wonder if it is the answer) Acts 12: 5 “Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him. And when she (Rhoda) knew Peter's voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate. And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.” No - our petitions are not granted - No is an answer … it could also be not yet (…wait - not yet) Hebrews 11 - all died without receiving their prayers yet. (in time they will receive it) Wait - could be silence (because it is best for us to wait at that time)/ Delay for the same reason - doesn't mean it wasn't heard at the moment we made it. Daniel 10:12 - Daniel prayed and did not receive an answer until 3 weeks later but the pray was heard on the first day he made it. “Fear not Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand …thy words were heard” (Don’t mistake silence for inactivity) - results may come in time. Another Way - something quite often we did not expect or see - God had another way! Note: all of these are answers! Never confuse not getting what we want as no answer! We have the most powerful communication tool in the world let’s use it!! 1 John 3: 22 (KJV) “And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.” 1 John 3:22 (ESV) “and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him.” Prayer Principle 1 – We Pray or we Faint! Prayer Principle 2 – Believe that GOD Hears Prayer Principle 3 – There is a way to Pray (Pray the right way) Prayer Principle 4 – Listen or God won’t Prayer Principle 5 – Prayer Works (God Answers Prayer)
I don't know how many times I've heard it said, "Lord willin' and the creek don't rise!" Are you making it to church this Sunday? Can I count on you to be there? "Lord willin' and the . . . " well . . . today it's more like, "Lord willin' and the pipes don't freeze!" That familiar saying does have its origin in the Bible, you know. In James 4:15, we're told that rather than trust in our plans, we should say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that." James confronts the reality that far too often, we trust our plans for an uncertain future instead of the promise of our certain God.
In 1866 a man named Alfred Nobel invented dynamite. He developed the explosive power of nitroglycerin in stick form so that it would be beneficial primarily in mining and demolition work. People began to use dynamite to clear debris for the building of roads and bridges. The power of dynamite had the ability to improve the progress of construction and the development of roads and communities. But soon, nations discovered how to use it for war. That same dynamite that was created to build society could also be used to destroy life by bombing an enemy. Alfred Nobel was so impacted by the negative use of dynamite that before he died, he bequeathed his vast fortune to the establishment of the Nobel Peace Prize. He didn't want his legacy to be connected to destruction; he wanted it to be connected to peace. Like Aldred Nobel, we too possess a great power. It's a power that can be used for good, or a power that can be used for evil. What is this power we possess? It is the power of our words. With our words, our attitude, and even the tone of our voice, we have the power to inspire, encourage, uplift, bless, motivate, and influence others. We also have the power to discourage, tear-down, devalue, hurt, wound, and offend others. Each one of us possesses this power. In James 1:19-20 the Bible says, “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.”There has never been more communication than there is today. There have never been more outlets and opportunities to speak. I am painfully aware that everyday I have the opportunity to make a difference with my words. Regretfully, sometimes I fail. But I want to speak words of life, hope, encouragement, and blessing. This doesn't mean that I don't speak the truth, quite the contrary. We speak truth, we share Christ, we point people to Scripture….but how we do it matters greatly. When I speak from a position of anger it usually closes the ears of my listener and I do more damage than good…even when my intent was to share truth.James says we should be slow to speak. Let's think this through. Slow to speak. Slow to react. Slow to respond. Slow to comment on social media. Slow to fire back a text. Slow to speak out of judgment, criticism, frustration, or anger. God's Word is asking us to be slow to speak.Proverbs 13:3 - “Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.”Proverbs 10:19 - “When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.”So, how can we honor God with our words and our conversations? A tool to help us slow down is a filter. You can filter your words by first asking a few questions. Consider what you are tempted to say and then answer these questions:Is it helpful?Does it build others up?Does it benefit the listener? What is my motive in speaking?Am I speaking from a place of anger? Are my words critical and judgmental?Am I using wisdom as I speak? We might be tempted to say, “It's the truth, so I'm going to say it.” But the Holy Spirit wants to guide, not only what we say, but how we say it. Remember the fruit of the Spirit. These character traits are the ongoing evidence of the Spirit of God in our lives. God wants us to grow in the fruit of love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. We can apply all of these character traits to how we speak whether it's verbal or in written form.Today's Challenge: We desperately need to help of the Holy Spirit to become slow in our speaking. Make some time to pray and ask God for his help and his wisdom. Today you'll have the opportunity to practice this new skill. May God give you strength.
Sin comes from our hearts and leads to ruin, while righteousness comes from God and leads to restoration. This is the message of Scripture, clearly taught in the first chapter of James. In James 1:13-14, we see the source and result of sin. Dustin Messer is Pastor for Faith Formation at All Saints Anglican Church in Downtown Dallas, TX.

In this episode of The Power Producers Podcast, David Carothers and co-host Kyle Houck interview James Jenkins, CIC, CRM, CRIS, Chief Risk Officer at RiskWell. James talks about how he started in the insurance industry and his knowledge and expertise in the insurance business. Episode Highlights: David introduces James Jenkins. (1:32) James mentions that starting an insurance agency from scratch with no industry experience is completely irresponsible. (7:43) James mentions that from a technology and client experience perspective, everything that the carrier did was intentional. (12:16) James thinks that a lot of independent agents struggle with technology’s evolution. (12:50) James shares one of the hardest transitions for him was going from being a good insurance agent and a good salesman to being a good business owner. (16:24) In James’ opinion, the transition has not been the easiest. Not until almost a year into running the independent agency did he have a great relationship with his CPA and bookkeeper. (16:37) James shares that everything he does in his business is 100% P&C insurance and it has given him a big advantage in how he works. It has allowed him to have channel partners that are life only and health only agents. (17:29) James mentions that there's a lot of benefit to being able to focus and do a small number of tasks at a high level. (17:52) James mentions that he was fortunate enough to be able to sell the previous agency. Therefore, he had an infusion of capital at the beginning. (22:53) James shares the most insane 8 months of his life.
