When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron and said to him, “Up, make us gods who shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.” 2 So Aaron said to them, “Take off the rings of gold that are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.” 3 So all the people took off the rings of gold that were in their ears and brought them to Aaron. 4 And he received the gold from their hand and fashioned it with a graving tool and made a golden calf. And they said, “These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!” 5 When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it. And Aaron made a proclamation and said, “Tomorrow shall be a feast to the Lord.” 6And they rose up early the next day and offered burnt offerings and brought peace offerings. And the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.7 And the Lord said to Moses, “Go down, for your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves. 8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way that I commanded them. They have made for themselves a golden calf and have worshiped it and sacrificed to it and said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!'” 9 And the Lord said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and behold, it is a stiff-necked people. 10 Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them, in order that I may make a great nation of you.”11 But Moses implored the Lord his God and said, “O Lord, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? 12 Why should the Egyptians say, ‘With evil intent did he bring them out, to kill them in the mountains and to consume them from the face of the earth'? Turn from your burning anger and relent from this disaster against your people. 13Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your own self, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I will give to your offspring, and they shall inherit it forever.'” 14 And the Lord relented from the disaster that he had spoken of bringing on his people.Has God proved himself faithful to you?  How?  In what areas of your life do you forget God's faithfulness and make replacement gods?Can you believe that God is preparing something beautiful for you when he seems absent?Why do we need a mediator between us and God?  How does this simplify things for us?Which of the three arguments from Moses are most comforting/which is hardest to believe?  God will finish what he starts in you; God will make himself known through you; God will keep his promises to you.Is it comforting to think that God is stuck with you, that he relents from judging you for his own glory?What will it look like for you personally in the coming years for God to stick with you?

Life As It Was Meant To Be Part Two: U Turn Required! Louie Marsh, 6-20-2021 A Picture of Maturity:   “3remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 1:3, ESV)   A Faith that PRODUCES WORK. Faith without work is dead – and the more faith we have the more it'll be obvious to all.   A Love that PROMPTS TOIL. The Greek word here is slightly different from the one above, it mean toil, things that need doing that you don't like, that are a pain but need doing – it's love that impels us to do that!   A Hope that enables me to ENDURE.   Hope – the absolutely essential quality to life! Without hope you'll die, either spiritually, emotionally or even physically!  You've gotta have hope, and if you do you won't quit!!   That's how things SHOULD BE – look for a moment at those 3 things and ask how true are they in your life?  Okay – now let's see how to make some progress towards maturity!   How To Get There:   1) You must MAKE A U TURN!   “9For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, 10and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.” (1 Thessalonians 1:9–10, ESV)   This is the essential act that we must take if we are to grow spiritually and achieve the kind of life we want.             I don't think most Christians really understand this – AA and other 12 step programs have done a much better job than the church has of explaining and practicing this.             We MUST turn, in every area of our life!   This U Turn Involves Two Turns: Turning FROM whatever is hurting you. This is what most of us think of when we hear this – it's important alright but not all of it! Turning TO CHRIST. This is the positive side of things – you've got to have both or you don't have much!   “22to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,” (Ephesians 4:22–23, ESV)             Paul's putting off and putting on is a good example of this – turning is not just a negative thing, it's a positive thing too, and it must be done over and over and over again as we try and move forward!             This is a CRITICAL part of the Christian life!   2) Make sure your faith is more than just TALK.   “5because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake.” (1 Thessalonians 1:5, ESV)             Talk can be cheap – and if you don't walk the walk then PLEASE don't talk the talk!  However….   RECOGNIZE you do have a responsibility to talk!   “14How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?” (Romans 10:14, ESV)             I know a lot of people who say, “My witness is how I live, I don't need to tell others about Christ.”  BALONEY!!  This is a cop out!   RELY on God's Power.   because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction.  1 Thess. 1:5             These three things are KEY to the kind of powerful Spiritual life seen in the NT.   “16For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” (Romans 1:16, ESV)             The Gospel is God's Power – we've got to rely on it, believe it, share it and live it!   “5so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.” (1 Corinthians 2:5, ESV)             What does YOUR faith rest on – really?  Tradition? Family? Friends?   REST in the Holy Spirit.   “4and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,” (1 Corinthians 2:4, ESV)             When we share our faith, in either words or acts, we must rely on God's power – and encourage others to do so too!  Not on anything else!   “5Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God,” (2 Corinthians 3:5, ESV)             When we trust the Spirit what we share comes alive, have you ever heard a sermon or lesson that was doctrinally correct but dead as a doornail?  It is the Spirit who gives life – that's why we must rest in Him!   REVEAL your deepest convictions.   An opinion is something you'll argue over, a conviction is something you'll die for! How many convictions do you have? A real danger in our post modern society is the lack of real convictions. Poll showing many college students said NOTHING was worth dying for – if that's true then NOTHING is worth living for either!    For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39   “14For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died;” (2 Corinthians 5:14, ESV)             When you look at the early Christians it's clear they had convictions – in fact look at any life worth living and you'll find strong unshakable convictions!   3) MODEL your life after mature believers.   “6And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit,” (1 Thessalonians 1:6, ESV)             You might think Paul was conceited but he wasn't, just acknowledging the truth. We all need models – but be sure to do the following! Pick them carefully – make sure they are following Christ. Be wise – you don't make yourself into a carbon copy – you pick and choose things from their lives that you see a need for in yours! You do NOT become a clone! Make sure you have more than one – that helps keeps you balanced since no one is perfect.   “16I urge you, then, be imitators of me.” (1 Corinthians 4:16, ESV)   Some of my role models: C.S. Lewis, Francis Shaeffer, Dr. Walter Martin, Rick Warren, Dr. John Stott, Dr. Tim Keller among others.   4) BECOME a good model for others to follow.   “7so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia.” (1 Thessalonians 1:7, ESV)             If you begin to live the dynamic Christian life you WILL become a role model whether you like it or not!           Charles Barkley and Brittany Spears among many other have said they aren't role models, but whether they like it or not they ARE role models, the only question is are they good ones or bad ones!           And the same is true of you and me! Our kids look to us, our unchurched friends look to us to see what a Christian really is. It does no good to piously say, “Oh don't look at me just look at Jesus!”           For many people we are the only Jesus they are ever going to see!!  So it's up to us to do the best we can, and stop running from the truth!   “9It was not because we do not have that right, but to give you in ourselves an example to imitate.” (2 Thessalonians 3:9, ESV)

From the teaching of Paul in the last four chapters of 2 Corinthians, we find that the church in Corinth had better shape up before Paul's next visit.  Read 2 Corinthians 10:1-62 Corinthians 10:1-6 (NLT) 1Now I, Paul, appeal to you with the gentleness and kindness of Christ—though I realize you think I am timid in person and bold only when I write from far away. 2Well, I am begging you now so that when I come I won't have to be bold with those who think we act from human motives. 3We are human, but we don't wage war as humans do. 4We use God's mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. 5We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ. 6And after you have become fully obedient, we will punish everyone who remains disobedient.Our Lord may not have been striking in His personal appearance.  But He did not walk around with a halo.  He was meek and lowly and that should be the badge of His followers.The Greek word for “gentleness” has the idea of “lenience”—like a benevolent judge being lenient on the guilty.“Meekness” in the Greek means “consideration for others.”  It's defined as being even better than just.Possible Charges Against Apostle Paul1.     Being bold when not face to face with them but not as bold when with them2.     They believe Paul was motivated by human motives aloneWhat are the mental walls of resistance in the minds of some people?  It's reasoning that is opposed to the truth of God's Word and pride of intelligence that exalts itself.But once the walls in the mind have been torn down, the door in the heart can be opened.In Greek, the words for “proud obstacle” means logic or reasoning that attempts to divert people from the Gospel.

Sermon Guide Book of Galatians Part 3 - Spiritual Leaders Big Idea: We know God personally but we follow him together. Galatians 2:1-10 1Then fourteen years later I went back to Jerusalem again, this time with Barnabas; and Titus came along, too. 2I went there because God revealed to me that I should go. While I was there I met privately with those considered to be leaders of the church and shared with them the message I had been preaching to the Gentiles. I wanted to make sure that we were in agreement, for fear that all my efforts had been wasted and I was running the race for nothing. 3And they supported me and did not even demand that my companion Titus be circumcised, though he was a Gentile. 4Even that question came up only because of some so-called believers there—false ones, who were secretly brought in. They sneaked in to spy on us and take away the freedom we have in Christ Jesus. They wanted to enslave us and force us to follow their Jewish regulations. 5But we refused to give in to them for a single moment. We wanted to preserve the truth of the gospel message for you. 6And the leaders of the church had nothing to add to what I was preaching. (By the way, their reputation as great leaders made no difference to me, for God has no favorites.) 7Instead, they saw that God had given me the responsibility of preaching the gospel to the Gentiles, just as he had given Peter the responsibility of preaching to the Jews. 8For the same God who worked through Peter as the apostle to the Jews also worked through me as the apostle to the Gentiles. 9In fact, James, Peter, and John, who were known as pillars of the church, recognized the gift God had given me, and they accepted Barnabas and me as their co-workers. They encouraged us to keep preaching to the Gentiles, while they continued their work with the Jews. 10Their only suggestion was that we keep on helping the poor, which I have always been eager to do. Hebrews 13:7-8 7Remember your leaders who taught you the word of God. Think of all the good that has come from their lives, and follow the example of their faith. 8Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. 9So do not be attracted by strange, new ideas. Your strength comes from God's grace, not from rules about food, which don't help those who follow them. Hebrews 13:17 Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they are accountable to God. 3 Reasons You Need Spiritual Leaders: 1. To Tell you the truth (v. 3) 2. To Encourage your gifts (v. 9) 3. To Give you direction (v. 10) Discussion Questions 1.Talk about a time when you ignored wise counsel. 2. Who do you have in your life that you allow to challenge you, to “watch over your soul?” 3. Do you have trouble submitting to authority? Talk about some reasons why people resist authority in their lives. 4. Do you desire more connection and direction from your church community? How can your group be praying for you?

We have to get the Gospel right for the unity of the church Philippians 1:15-18   Galatians 2:1-21 ESV 1Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along with me. 2I went up because of a revelation and set before them (though privately before those who seemed influential) the gospel that I proclaim among the Gentiles, in order to make sure I was not running or had not run in vain. 3But even Titus, who was with me, was not forced to be circumcised, though he was a Greek. 4Yet because of false brothers secretly brought in—who slipped in to spy out our freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might bring us into slavery— 5to them we did not yield in submission even for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you. 6And from those who seemed to be influential (what they were makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality)—those, I say, who seemed influential added nothing to me. 7On the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been entrusted with the gospel to the circumcised 8(for he who worked through Peter for his apostolic ministry to the circumcised worked also through me for mine to the Gentiles), 9and when James and Cephas and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to Barnabas and me, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. 10Only, they asked us to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do. 11But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. 12For before certain men came from James, he was eating with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing the circumcision party. 13And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy. 14But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, “If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?” 15We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; 16yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified. 17But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we too were found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not! 18For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor. 19For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. 20I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.   Philippians 1:15-18 ESV 15 Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will. 16The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. 17The former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment. 18What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice,

In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

THE FOURTH WEEK IN ADVENT - TUESDAYLESSON: MALACHI 4:1-6And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, I am not.” John 1:21In the question whether John was Elijah, the Jews were evidently referring to the prophecy of Malachi. I am of the opinion that Malachi had in mind no other Elijah but John, and that there are no grounds for assuming that there would be a return of Elijah the Tishbite who ascended into heaven in a flaming chariot (2 King 2:11).The words of the angel Gabriel spoken to Zechariah, John's father, also support this opinion: “He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just.” Luke 1:17. In these words one sees that the angel Gabriel is referring to the prophecy of Malachi and quotes the same words of the prophet who also says that Elijah will “turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers.” Malachi 4:6. Had Malachi prophesied a different Elijah, the angel would certainly not have applied his words to John.He followed the same course with the Virgin Mary when he applied Isaiah's words to her: “Behold, a young woman shall conceive and bear a son.” Isaiah 7:14. These words Gabriel applied to Mary when he said: “Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son.” Luke 1:31.In his work as the forerunner of Christ, John the Baptist would be a real Elijah preaching repentance to prepare men for Christ.SL.XI.101,14AE 75,174PRAYER: Thanks and praise be to you, O God, for the great cloud of witnesses who have witnessed to your Son and the salvation you have prepared for us in Him. Thank You Jesus Generally the Bible is such an interesting read and one of the stories to go for is that of Hannah and Peninnah, the wives of Elkanah. A tale of two wives, one had kids and also a chip on her shoulders and the other had no child yet but found solace in God and in the love of her husband. She was bullied and ridiculed by the not so ladylike Lady Penny for her childlessness but little did they all know that her delay on child bearing was from the Lord 1 Sam 1:5&6 5But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the LORD had shut up her womb. 6And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb. Is that your seemingly impossible to conquer challenge orchestrated by the Father Himself? Let's Pray for the Will of God to be done in our lives so we don't give up on things that were designed by God to lift us up. Amen.

Discipleship Series #13 A Disciples Heart Was Made For INTIMACY WITH GOD By Pastor George Lehman (Our heart was made to be God’s home.) The word Intimacy means: - * closely acquainted (to know a person / up close and personal) * Intimate friend – Someone you can trust and confide in * Relationship between – It’s a strong bond, it’s always two sided Paul’s greatest desire was for intimacy with God Philippians 3:8 and 10 (Amp) – 8But more than that, I count everything as loss compared to the priceless privilege and supreme advantage of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord [and of growing more deeply and thoroughly acquainted with Him-a joy unequalled]. For His sake I have lost everything and I consider it all garbage, so that I may gain Christ. 10And this, so that I may know Him [experientially, becoming more thoroughly acquainted with Him, understanding the remarkable wonders of His Person more completely] and [in that same way experience] the power of His resurrection [which overflows and is active in believers], and [that I may share] the fellowship of His sufferings, by being continually conformed [inwardly into His likeness even] to His death [dying as He did]. How intimately do you want to know God? It is possible to go through the motions of obeying God and His commands. All this and yet: - not have an intimate relationship with God.                           So busy with the things of God and miss the God of the things. Isaiah 45:5 (Msg) – “I AM GOD, the only God there is. Besides Me there are no real gods. I’m the One who armed you for this work, though you don’t even know Me.” Did you know that Moses had this type of relationship in the beginning of his ministry with God? Exodus 33:12-13 (Amp) – 12Moses said to the Lord, “See, You say to me, ‘Bring up this people,’ but You have not let me know whom You will send with me. Yet You have said, ‘I know you by name and you have also found favour in My sight.’ 13Now therefore, I pray you, if I have found favour in Your sight, let me know Your ways so that I may know You[becoming more deeply and intimately acquainted with You, recognizing and understanding Your ways more clearly] and that I may find grace and favour in Your sight. And consider also, that this nation is Your people.” At this point in Moses’ life he had been obedient to God’s instructions For example: - He led Israel out of Egyptian bondage. 1A     This is a type of us coming out of bondage to a new life in Christ. He helped Israel pass through the Red Sea. 2A     It’s a type of crossing over from death to life – through the obedience of baptism. I Corinthians 10:1-2 (NIV) – For I do not want you to be ignorant of that fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. 2They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea Acts 2:38 (NIV) – Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, everyone of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. He led Israel to Mount Sinai where God gave him the 10 Commandments. 3A     This is a type of the clear instructions of how we should live as God’s children – as per His word. The amazing thing is Moses obeyed Gods instructions. But yet he never knew God in an intimate way. Note Exodus 33:13(NIV) – “If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favour with you.” The sad similarity to this story is: Some Christians today are following God’s commandments and instructions. But do not “know Him” in an up close personal intimate way. How I remember serving God in my own life, out of fear, legalistic, keeping rules, trying to be obedient. In case God zapped me. When I see this scripture, I realise God is not only a God of wrath, fury, anger, just and Righteous. But a God of love who longs for His children to have an intimate relationship with Him. Exodus 34:5-7(NIV) – 5Then the Lord came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the Lord. 6And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, 7maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.” This passage, God reveals Himself in a personal way.  Then Moses said, “Now show me your Glory” Exodus 33:18 Moses asks to see God’s glory and God shows him His character. Gods glory is: - * Gods character * God’s Nature The way He relates to the prince of his creation “mankind”. God never gave Moses some vision of His great majesty, a tour of the universe, or showed Him all his wealth.  No!!! Here are 3 wonderful characteristics of God that I trust will help us understand something about our awesome God. So we can develop a more intimate relationship with God. (Note Moses’ reaction) Exodus 34:8 “Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped.” (Draws into an intimacy with God) Romans 2:4 (NIV) – “Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?” Firstly 1. First to know God in an intimate way. We must understand that God is a compassionate and gracious God. David sums it up: Psalm 145:7-9 (NIV) – 7They celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness. 8The Lord is gracious and compassionate; slow to anger and rich in love. 9The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made. God is so compassionate that when we sin, He graciously and mercifully forgives us. God is so compassionate that He blesses us with food, a roof over our heads, jobs, provision and protection Words cannot express how great our God is. James 5:11b – The Lord is full of pity and compassion and tenderness and mercy. You can this week go to God and thank Him for being so wonderful to you. Secondly 2 To know God in an intimate way – we must understand that God is slow to anger. Some people think God is like our earthly father. They think God is quick to become angry with us when we make a mistake. However, the truth is that when we make a mistake, God is patient with us and slow to anger. Psalm 103:8-11 (NIV) – 8The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. 9He will not always accuse, nor will he harbour his anger forever; 10he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. 11For as high as the heavens are above the earth. So great is his love for those who fear him. God is not like us. Isaiah 55:8-9 (NIV) – 8”For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. 9”As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” When we get angry, we want to get even – we hold grudges, we become bitter, we live with Unforgiveness, we act Love-less Thank God He does not treat us as our sins deserve. He is slow to anger. Thirdly 3 To know God in an intimate way we must understand that God is abounding in LOVE. John 3:16-17(NIV) – 16For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. No greater act of love has ever been demonstrated than when Jesus gave His life to save ours. To reconnect us to have an intimate relationship with Him. Romans 5:8 NIV “That God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us”. I John 4:8 – God is LOVE. Aren’t you glad you can have an intimate relationship with this kind of God? Who is compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. Conclusion If you do not have an intimate relationship with God – it’s probably because you don’t know Him very well or maybe you’ve never met Him in a personal way.

Episode 73-74.   So what is the duty of teachers and shepherds when it comes to dealing with doctrinal error and, sometimes, out right heresy? Let's take a look!   Everyone – Leaders Included – Must Watch Their Mouth!   Yes, I am very well aware that we'll be judged for every careless word we speak. I'll go even further we are also commanded not to lie and not to condemn our brothers when we disagree with them   “34You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. 36I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, 37for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”” (Matthew 12:34–37, ESV)   “4Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand.” (Romans 14:4, ESV)   “6The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. 8For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's.” (Romans 14:6–8, ESV)   “1“Judge not, that you be not judged. 2For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. 3Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when there is the log in your own eye? 5You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.” (Matthew 7:1–5, ESV)   TEACHERS AND SHEPHERDS HAVE DUTIES FROM GOD   FEED AND LEAD:   When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. (Jn 21:15–17).   However, pastors and teachers aren't just commanded to teach and lead the flock. We are also called upon to defend it when necessary. James says teachers are under a stricter judgement and this tension between not being judgmental but being discerning and defending your flock from harm, is part of the weight of that judgement.   Ezekiel tells us that if the watchman doesn't warn those under his care he will be condemned. So yes, I am very aware of this and living with the weight of this greater judgement is something I agreed to take on when I became a teacher and pastor.   WATCHMEN – PROTECTING THE FLOCK   “1The word of the Lord came to me: 2“Son of man, speak to your people and say to them, If I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from among them, and make him their watchman, 3and if he sees the sword coming upon the land and blows the trumpet and warns the people, 4then if anyone who hears the sound of the trumpet does not take warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be upon his own head. 5He heard the sound of the trumpet and did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith, 20among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.” (1 Timothy 1:19–20, ESV)   “16But avoid irreverent babble, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness, 17and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18who have swerved from the truth, saying that the resurrection has already happened. They are upsetting the faith of some.” (2 Timothy 2:16–18, ESV)   If the people involved are public figures – like I am – the answer is yes!   THE PRICE OF LEADERSHIP:   “1Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. 2For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body.” (James 3:1–2, ESV)   God's judgement is based on what you know.   “20For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” (Romans 1:20, ESV)   That's the only way His judgements can be just. He can't condemn or justify you if you didn't something was right or wrong.   “47And that servant who knew his master's will but did not get ready or act according to his will, will receive a severe beating. 48But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, will receive a light beating. Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.” (Luke 12:47–48, ESV)   “12Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— 13each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. 14If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. 15If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.” (1 Corinthians 3:12–15, ESV)

This is the third day of what is tagged as a divine interruption and the Spirit of Breakthrough. We have been building and laying new spiritual blocks as the Lord instructs us regarding this epoch. We are still engaging the apostolic concept in building what the Spirit is revealing as a core prophetic blueprint to the desire of the Father in this season of Post-Coronavirus realities. Yet, we have experienced a new sense of spiritual impartation in the past three days. I guess, the Lord desire to imprint within our spirits what he has been teaching us for almost four months. Hebrew 5: 5-6 So also Christ did not take upon Himself the glory of becoming a high priest, but He was called by the One who said to Him: “You are My Son; today I have become Your Father.” 6And in another passage God says: “You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.” This message will challenge, encourage, but yet inspire you with new spiritual vision, capacity, and strategy to press into what the Father is saying as he takes us to a place we've never been before. I invite you to listen carefully and let the Holy Spirit, perfect his work in you. A new sense of hunger and thirst is required to enter this dimension that is open before us. The Church needs to see what the Lord is doing from a new height so we can develop the right motivation and the desire to take our journey in reaching this new realm. Friends, the priesthood has changed and we are demanded to respond accordingly. Isaiah 55 1 “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. 2 Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare.

The Sons of Sceva 11And God was doing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, 12so that even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were carried away to the sick, and their diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them. 13Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists undertook to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims. 14Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this. 15But the evil spirit answered them, Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize, but who are you? 16And the man in whom was the evil spirit leaped on them, mastered all of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17And this became known to all the residents of Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks. And fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled. 18Also many of those who were now believers came, confessing and divulging their practices. 19And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver. 20So the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily.

Acts 18:123 (ESV) Paul in Corinth 18After this Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. 2And he found a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to leave Rome. And he went to see them, 3and because he was of the same trade he stayed with them and worked, for they were tentmakers by trade. 4And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and tried to persuade Jews and Greeks. 5When Silas and Timothy arrived from Macedonia, Paul was occupied with the word, testifying to the Jews that the Christ was Jesus. 6And when they opposed and reviled him, he shook out his garments and said to them, Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent. From now on I will go to the Gentiles. 7And he left there and went to the house of a man named Titius Justus, a worshiper of God. His house was next door to the synagogue. 8Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed in the Lord, together with his entire household. And many of the Corinthians hearing Paul believed and were baptized. 9And the Lord said to Paul one night in a vision, Do not be afraid, but go on speaking and do not be silent, 10for I am with you, and no one will attack you to harm you, for I have many in this city who are my people.11And he stayed a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them. 12But when Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews made a united attack on Paul and brought him before the tribunal, 13saying, This man is persuading people to worship God contrary to the law. 14But when Paul was about to open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, If it were a matter of wrongdoing or vicious crime, O Jews, I would have reason to accept your complaint. 15But since it is a matter of questions about words and names and your own law, see to it yourselves. I refuse to be a judge of these things. 16And he drove them from the tribunal. 17And they all seized Sosthenes, the ruler of the synagogue, and beat him in front of the tribunal. But Gallio paid no attention to any of this. Paul Returns to Antioch 18After this, Paul stayed many days longer and then took leave of the brothers and set sail for Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila. At Cenchreae he had cut his hair, for he was under a vow. 19And they came to Ephesus, and he left them there, but he himself went into the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews. 20When they asked him to stay for a longer period, he declined. 21But on taking leave of them he said, I will return to you if God wills, and he set sail from Ephesus. 22When he had landed at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church, and then went down to Antioch. 23After spending some time there, he departed and went from one place to the next through the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.

Acts 17:115 (ESV) Paul and Silas in Thessalonica 17Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. 2And Paul went in, as was his custom, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead, and saying, This Jesus, whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ. 4And some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a great many of the devout Greeks and not a few of the leading women. 5But the Jews were jealous, and taking some wicked men of the rabble, they formed a mob, set the city in an uproar, and attacked the house of Jason, seeking to bring them out to the crowd. 6And when they could not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city authorities, shouting, These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also, 7and Jason has received them, and they are all acting against the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus. 8And the people and the city authorities were disturbed when they heard these things. 9And when they had taken money as security from Jason and the rest, they let them go. Paul and Silas in Berea 10The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue. 11Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so. 12Many of them therefore believed, with not a few Greek women of high standing as well as men. 13But when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that the word of God was proclaimed by Paul at Berea also, they came there too, agitating and stirring up the crowds. 14Then the brothers immediately sent Paul off on his way to the sea, but Silas and Timothy remained there. 15Those who conducted Paul brought him as far as Athens, and after receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him as soon as possible, they departed.

Season 4 is here! God has shown us the focus for this season: being "loving and life-giving". We really want to help point people to the Lord to find life, encouragement, and ultimately rest as mature sons of God. We're hitting hard on rest this episode, talking about practicing introspection and being self-aware to diagnose busyness and unrest in self. The Lord calls us to himself when we are weary and burdened. It's a beautiful invitation, but we have to be in a place where we can admit we are weary and burdened. We're happy to be back! November 24, 2019 How to treat your enemies.Matthew 6:1-4My thesis for the study:In the sermon on the mount, Jesus teaches us how to live in the world. Jesus gives actual instruction and formation. More than rules or law, the SOM is a set of convictions about moral truth.“Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for thenyou have no reward from your Father in heaven.2“So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocritesdo in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tellyou, they have received their reward. 3 But when you give alms, do not let your left handknow what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.Where? Summary: Since all of Jesus actions and teachings show us that he is not interested in mere rule-keeping righteousness, we find that he is working for restoration, and that he places high demands upon those who follow him.INTRODUCTION1. Cliché: Your character is how you behave when no one can see you. A godly and god-fearing person knows that God can always see what we do—whether good or bad, or just mundane. True piety and right religious character is to move much of our religious life to where only God can see us. Here is an easy relogous question: what do you do in private. Jesus seems interested in a different question: what good actions will you move or keep in private?2. Welcome: Hi Pals, this is Blaine Hill with the Simply Stated Podcast for the Journey Sunday School class at Lake Murray Presbyterian Church in Chapin, SC. This season of the podcast is on Jesus sermon on the mount, in Matthew chapters 5 through 7. Today we are reading Matthew 6:1-. Jesus seems to be moving into how we ought to act—our intentions. “in order to be seen…”b. Practicing piety:· Gives three examples: almsgiving, prayer and fasting.· Language link to righteousness.c. Reward. Jesus casually recognizes that human beings respond to incentives. Major cornerstone of modern economic theory. People want, even need, to be noticed.d. Father-household economy, not market economy. Parents may reward children, but they don’t look at them as workers, who must produce.e. Structure: When you give/pray/fast, don’t _____________, but _______2“So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocritesdo in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. “Seed” as a Theme in the Bible 1 Peter 1:23Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the Word of God,which lives and abides for ever. Eve – her seed (Messiah) will bruise Satan’s heel (Gen. 3:15 ) Abraham – his seed will bless many nations (Genesis 12, 15)David – Messiah to be of his royal lineage (II Samuel 7, Isaiah 9) Jesus – as The Fulfillment, Gospel teachings Paul – theological – Romans 4, Galatians 3 (Abraham) Paul – practical – Galatians 5:22, Ephesians 5:9 (fruit of the Spirit) Two ‘seed’ time-scales: (i) affects all humanity (all dispensations),(ii) affects a human life. Encourages:Patience (one lifespan, future generations). Hope (fruit in a lifespan, of future generations; ‘take (God’s) long view’). Purpose (seed has levels of purpose). Asking basic questions: (i) where is the fruit? (ii) what is the fruit?Requires: Faith (required, planting is a starting point, believe that somethingwill happen, maybe …. a harvest!) Participation (our involvement; ‘planting’, ‘watering’). 1 One day as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, great crowds pressed in on him to listen to the word of God. 2He noticed two empty boats at the water’s edge, for the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. 3Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water. So he sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there. 4When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.” 5“Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” 6And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! 7A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking. 8When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m such a sinful man.” 9For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him. 10His partners, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were also amazed. Jesus replied to Simon, “Don’t be afraid! From now on you’ll be fishing for people!” 11And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus. The Names and Titles of Jesus – Jesus The Word/Logos This series of the names and titles of Jesus will give us a more in-depth understanding of Jesus Christ our Lord. This is the second in the series. The following is an outline. 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning. 3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.4In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it. 6There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. 9The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—13children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. 14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. The Word = Logos is the name of Jesus Reason Why John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning. 3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.4In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. The Jews understood that the Logos, the Word of God, was God revealing Himself, God creating, God acting, God alive in His creation Targum Aramaic translation of the Hebrew Bible. (Yahweh) Aramaic term that means “the word.” It’s the word memra. Greek Septuagint memra “the word.” translation logos in Greek for example, in Genesis 15: “After this, the word [logos] of the Lord came to Abram in a vision.” Psalm 33, verse 6: “By the word [by the logos] of the Lord were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth.” Lord were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth.” -The apostle John is the only New Testament author to call Jesus “the Word.” He does so in the Gospel of John, and in his first Epistle of John, and also, as we’ll see, in the book of Revelation. -When he talks about the “Word,” that’s the Greek word logos. So when you see the “Word,” that’s the logos. John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning. 3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.4In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John said 4 things about the Word Logos His Eternity 2. His Personality 3. His Deity 4. His Humanity John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning. 3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.4In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. 2 Problems Too high a view of John 2. Too low a view of Jesus More divine than human? More human than divine? Partly human, partly divine? Fully human, fully divine! The Incarnation of the Word of Life 1 John 1 (NIV) 1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 3We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. THE WORD I AM  (Yahweh) = LORD = “the word.” It’s the word memra= logos in Greek Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, John infused this word with a richer, fuller meaning-- not an impersonal force but a person, God made flesh. Jesus was God’s mirror, God’s way of making Himself known to His creation. The definition of a word John 1:18,No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side [Jesus, the Logos/Word of God], he has made him known. 2 Corinthians 4:6 For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," [that God who spoke in Genesis 1] has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God [how?] in the face of Jesus Christ [the Logos, the Word]. Believe Credence - believing that the facts accepting the truth. 2. Confidence – believing in (trust and obey) 3. Continuance – go on believing (faith& faithfulness) John 20:31 Greek (present continual tense) Is this belief saving Faith Credence- believing that the facts accepting the truth John 8:24Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that [a]I am He, you will die in your sins.” Gospel Incarnation 2. Cross 3. Resurrection 4. Ascension 5. Second Coming Believe Credence - believing that the facts accepting the truth. 2. Confidence – believing in (trust and obey) 3. Yet the world has never been able to grasp ‹the knowledge and understanding of› any of these things. But here [in the Apostles’ Creed] we have everything in richest measure. For here in all three articles God has revealed Himself and opened the deepest abyss of His fatherly heart and His pure, inexpressible love [Ephesians 3:18–19]. He has created us for this very reason, that He might redeem and sanctify us. In addition to giving and imparting to us everything in heaven and upon earth, He has even given to us His Son and the Holy Spirit, who brings us to Himself [Romans 8:14, 32]. For we could never grasp the knowledge of the Father’s grace and favor except through the Lord Christ. Lessons and Carols was first held on Christmas Eve, 1918. It was planned by Eric Milner-White, who at the age of thirty-four had just been appointed Dean of King’s College after experience as an army chaplain. The lessons for tonight have been used for almost 100 years to recall God’s promise to send a Savior, as well as that promise’s fulfillment.   EXHORTATION & PRAYERPlease rise.Dear people of God, in this Christmas season, it is our duty and delight to hear again the message of the angels and, in heart and mind, to go to Bethlehem and see this thing which has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us — the Christ Child lying in a manger, born to save us.Let us read and learn in Holy Scripture the story of the loving purposes of God from the first days after our fall into sin to the glorious redemption brought to us by this holy child.But first, let us pray for people all over the world who would delight with us to know the good news of Jesus Christ and who would join with us in singing his praises. Let us pray for the people of our community and our church.And, because this would please the Lord, let us remember in his name the poor and helpless, the cold, the hungry and the oppressed, the sick and those who are sad, the lonely and the unloved, and the elderly and the little children. SECOND LESSON: Genesis 22:15-18God repeats his promise: All nations will be blessed through Abraham’s descendent. 15The Angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven 16and said, “I have sworn by myself, declares the LORD, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17I will bless you greatly, and I will multiply your descendants greatly, like the stars of the sky and like the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the city gates of their enemies. 18In your seed all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.”   CONFESSION OF FAITHFrom the Augsburg Confession, Article 3:M: Our churches teach that the Word, that is, the Son of God, assumed the human nature in the womb of the Virgin Mary. C: So there are two natures — the divine and the human — inseparably joined in one person. There is one Christ, true God and true man, who was born of the Virgin Mary, truly suffered, was crucified, died, and was buried. He did this to reconcile the Father to us, and to be a sacrifice, not only for original sin and guilt, but also for every sin of all humanity. He also descended into hell, and truly rose again on the third day. Afterward, he ascended into heaven to sit at the right hand of the Father. There he forever reigns and has dominion over all creatures. He sanctifies those who believe in Him, by sending the Holy Spirit into their hearts to rule, comfort, and make them alive. He defends them against the devil and the power of sin.The same Christ will openly come again to judge the living and the dead, according to the Apostles’ Creed.THIRD LESSON: Isaiah 9:2, 6-7The Promised One will rule on David’s throne forever.2The people walking in darkness have seen a great light.On those living in the land of the shadow of death, the light has dawned. ... 6For to us a child is born. He will rule on David’s throne and over his kingdom to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from now on and forever.The zeal of the LORD of Armies will accomplish this. HYMN: 42 – Come, Your Hearts and Voices RaisingFOURTH LESSON: Micah 5:2-4God points to the place where the Messiah will be born.2“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come the one to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from ancient times, from eternity.” 3Therefore he will surrender them until the time she who is in labor gives birth to a child. Then the remainder of his brothers will return to the children of Israel. 4He will stand and shepherd with the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. They will dwell securely, for at that time he will be great to the ends of the earth. FIFTH LESSON: Matthew 1:18-25The angel’s announcement to Joseph.18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ took place. His mother, Mary, was pledged in marriage to Joseph. Before they came together, she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. 19 Joseph, her husband, was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her. So he decided to divorce her privately. 20 But as he was considering these things, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”22 All this happened to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: 23 “Look, the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son. And they will name him Immanuel,” which means, “God with us.”24 When Joseph woke up from his sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him. C: With this word ‘flesh,’ we see how God has assumed our human flesh and blood. Human reason cannot comprehend the mercy of our God, choosing to share our humanity. 1 Samuel 3:1-12 1Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the LORD before Eli. And word from the LORD was rare in those days, visions were infrequent. 2And it happened at that time as Eli was lying down in his place (now his eyesight had begun to grow dim and he could not see well), 3and the lamp of God had not yet gone out, THE LORD IS SILENT TO THOSE WHO DO NOT LISTEN. 3and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD where the ark of God was, 4that the LORD called Samuel; and he said, “Here I am.” 5Then he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, lie down again.” So he went and lay down. 6And the LORD called yet again, “Samuel!” So Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he answered, “I did not call, my son, lie down again.” 7Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, nor had the word of the LORD yet been revealed to him. 8So the LORD called Samuel again for the third time. Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for Thy servant is listening.” 11And the LORD said to Samuel, “Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel at which both ears of everyone who hears it will tingle. 12“In that day I will carry out against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end.” THE LORD WILL OPEN YOUR EARS TO DISCERN HIS VOICE WHEN YOU ASK. Brad Sullivan St. Mark’s, Bay City June 19, 2016 Proper 7, Year C Luke 8:26-39 “Somewhere to Cast Our Demons” Earlier this week, while beginning my preparation for today’s sermon, I posted the following on Facebook. “We need to stop hunting wild hogs. Without them, we’ll have nowhere to cast our demons. Amen.” There were several comments, some people taking the post very seriously, some rather disgruntled by the theological or huntingological implications. My favorite comments, however, came from my cousin Nicki, who reposted what I had written. In response to one rather disgruntled response, she wrote, “I thought it was funny. Father Bradley Sullivan is my cousin. I know his sense of humor...I used to change his diapers.” Saying we need to stop hunting wild hogs so we’d have a place to put our demons was all I had at the time for a sermon starter, and it gave me a chuckle so I figured I’d share. Then I started thinking that metaphorically speaking, it’s not that bad of an idea…not the wild hogs part, but the idea that we really do need somewhere to cast our demons. When the legion of demons begged Jesus not to cast them into the abyss, it seems that they were speaking of the abyss mentioned in Revelation (bottomless pit from which the demons came). Imagery of the abyss from which the monsters and later demons come goes all the way back to the great deep of Genesis from which fountains of water came forth to drown the earth. Therefore, they abyss is often associated with water, the seas where the great monsters and the Leviathan dwell. So, the demons begged Jesus not to cast them back into the abyss, and it seems that Jesus granted the demons’ request by sending them into the pigs, and then they ended up going into the abyss anyway as the pigs rushed headlong into the lake and were drowned. In the spiritual realm, the demons went back to the abyss. For us, in our world today, our society and our world are like the man amongst the tombs. We are rife with legions of demons: demons of anger, demons of fear, demons of hatred, just to name a few, and we desperately need somewhere to cast our demons. I should say we need somewhere other than each other to cast our demons. In our country, we tend to take our anger, fear, and hatred, and cast it all over each other. Sometimes we cast our demons onto each other through our fearful words and angry rhetoric. Sometimes we cast our demons onto each other through hurtful actions that separate and divide us. Sometimes we cast our demons onto each other with sprays of bullets into unsuspecting nightclub patrons, moviegoers, prayer groups, or elementary school students. As much as the exceedingly vast majority of Americans would never cast their demons onto others by shooting them, there is a connection between our speech, our words and actions, and the bullets that fly. Fear, anger, and hatred lead only to greater fear, anger, and hatred, and eventually to division and killing. As Bishop Doyle wrote in his response to the mass shooting at Pulse nightclub last Sunday in Orlando: The Internet is already full of unchristian, disrespectful, and horrific responses supporting the shooting and demonizing Islam. The reality is that we in this country are responsible for creating a place where hate speech is glorified, unnecessary weapons of mass destruction are freely accessible, and violence is cheered. Yes America, we are reaping what we sow. I too believe we are reaping what we have sown, and I’m not talking about guns. I’m talking about the ways we talk to and about each other and especially how we talk to and about the other. There is so much fear, anger, and hatred constantly being spewed out in conversations on the internet, in coffee shops, on the radio, the TV, even in churches and in our homes. We have been setting an enormous blaze with our talk. As James wrote in James 3:5-10: How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire! 6And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed among our members as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body, sets on fire the cycle of nature, and is itself set on fire by Gehenna. 7For every species of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species, 8but no one can tame the tongue—a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse those who are made in the likeness of God. 10From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this ought not to be so. The blaze we have set with our tongues, with our words both written and spoken, is a blaze of fear, anger, and hatred, and fear, anger, and hatred are our demons. These demons have divided us, made us weak, and turned us against one another. These legions of demons have done to us what Jesus did to the legion of demons that we dwelling in the man. While the demons were together, acting in the man as one, they were strong. No chain could hold him. No people could restrain him. Once Jesus cast the demons into the herd of pigs, they were divided, and they were weak. They rushed headlong into the abyss, the very place where they feared going. As a country, as a church, as the Body of Christ, we have been divided by the legions of demons of fear, anger, and hatred. We have been weakened by our divisions and have been rushing headlong into the abyss. We need to stop casting our fear, anger, and hatred on one another, and we need to find another place to cast them. We need to find a safe place to cast our demons so that they won’t continue to cause greater harm, and the only place we can cast our demons without them harming others is God. One way of casting our demons upon God is prayer, particularly prayers of lament, as I wrote earlier this week. We read in the Psalms prayers of lament, prayers of people who are so fed up, that they are crying out to God, even blaming God for the problems that beset them, asking God to seek vengeance upon their enemies. Some of these prayers make a turn and offer blessings and praise to God; some of them do not and simply end with these prayers of anguished cries, calling for God’s vengeance and questioning God’s justice. We need to bring back the prayer of lament so that we can cast our demons upon God rather than upon each other. It sounds easy, especially for the preacher man to say that we should cast our fear, anger, and hatred upon God rather than each other. I realize that with some of my preaching about loving our enemies, not seeking retaliation, it may seem that I’m rather detached from the violence and hatred in our world. I am not. I fear for my children’s lives. I remember riding my bike a half a mile or more away from home, spending whole days down by the creak behind our neighborhood, totally unsupervised. I can’t imagine my kids doing that nowadays. I’ve come into adulthood in a world in which being shot by a sniper while stopping for gas along a highway is a viable reality for me and my children. I am afraid for my children and the world they are inheriting. I want to protect them. I want to stop anyone who would harm them, and in the moment, if someone was trying to kill them, I have little doubt that I would do everything in my power to stop them, even if it meant killing the killer. I don’t know if that goes against what Jesus taught or not; I simply know it is what I would do. At the same time, I know that the more I dwell on those thoughts and fears, those plans for horrific eventualities, the more the demons of fear, anger, and hatred fill my heart and guide my actions. I know that I can’t with any success rail against the things in this world that I don’t like. All my fearful and angry writing and speech will do is add fuel to the fire, increase the blaze, and cast even more demons upon others already plagued with demons of their own. I’ve done more than enough of that already, as have many of us, or all of us. We need to stop all of the blame and simple solutions for the problems in our world, given as ways to alleviate our fear, anger, and hatred. One easy target has been the government, folks saying the problems started because we took prayer out of schools or removed the 10 Commandments from government building. Before we start blaming governments or states or school districts for removing prayer or Christian symbols and practices, we need to look at the potential of logs in our own eyes, remove them, and then lead by example. Saying, “the problem is that they took prayer out of our schools,” is simply casting a demon of blame upon the world. Such a statement makes someone else to blame, and makes the problem someone else’s to solve. The problems of casting our demons upon others is a problem that is all of ours to solve. Render to God what is God’s. Give the demons of blame to God. Pray to him your blame of someone else. Or even blame God and pray that to him. God can take it. God would probably appreciate the honesty. God is the appropriate place to cast our demons, because unlike everything in all creation, our demons can’t hurt God. Render unto God what is God’s to deal with. Render unto God our demons of fear, anger, and hatred, so that he can cast them out. Like the woman last week who came to Jesus full of sin, weeping upon his feet, we need to come to Jesus full of demons and then weep them out at his feet. When we weep our demons out at Jesus’ feet, we will likely feel powerless. With that, we find yet one more demon with which we struggle: our powerlessness. We want solutions to the problems in our world and we are mostly powerless to make those solutions happen. So we rant, we criticize, demonize, we divide. Divided, we rush headlong into the abyss. We weren’t made for division. We were made to be unified in Jesus. Unity does not mean unanimity. With all of our difference, we were all baptized into the one body of Jesus Christ. “All baptized people are called to make Christ known as Savior and Lord, and to share in the renewing of his world.” (BCP p. 531 - Ordination: Priest) We were not made to share our anger for the destruction of this world. We were made to share our faith for the renewing of this world We certainly need to share our fears, our anger, and even our hate with others, but for the purpose of seeking help in bringing those demons to God. We are meant to help each other cast our demons out upon God. As baptized disciples of Jesus, we are meant to do for each other what Jesus did for the man suffering from a legion of demons. We are meant to help each other find a herd of wild hogs and help each other cast our demons there. I realized just likened God to a herd of wild hogs, and I probably just secured 10 more years in purgatory for it, but the analogy holds true. Brad Sullivan St. Mark’s, Bay City June 19, 2016 Proper 7, Year C Luke 8:26-39 “Somewhere to Cast Our Demons” Earlier this week, while beginning my preparation for today’s sermon, I posted the following on Facebook. “We need to stop hunting wild hogs. Without them, we’ll have nowhere to cast our demons. Amen.” There were several comments, some people taking the post very seriously, some rather disgruntled by the theological or huntingological implications. My favorite comments, however, came from my cousin Nicki, who reposted what I had written. In response to one rather disgruntled response, she wrote, “I thought it was funny. Father Bradley Sullivan is my cousin. I know his sense of humor...I used to change his diapers.” Saying we need to stop hunting wild hogs so we’d have a place to put our demons was all I had at the time for a sermon starter, and it gave me a chuckle so I figured I’d share. Then I started thinking that metaphorically speaking, it’s not that bad of an idea…not the wild hogs part, but the idea that we really do need somewhere to cast our demons. When the legion of demons begged Jesus not to cast them into the abyss, it seems that they were speaking of the abyss mentioned in Revelation (bottomless pit from which the demons came). Imagery of the abyss from which the monsters and later demons come goes all the way back to the great deep of Genesis from which fountains of water came forth to drown the earth. Therefore, they abyss is often associated with water, the seas where the great monsters and the Leviathan dwell. So, the demons begged Jesus not to cast them back into the abyss, and it seems that Jesus granted the demons’ request by sending them into the pigs, and then they ended up going into the abyss anyway as the pigs rushed headlong into the lake and were drowned. In the spiritual realm, the demons went back to the abyss. For us, in our world today, our society and our world are like the man amongst the tombs. We are rife with legions of demons: demons of anger, demons of fear, demons of hatred, just to name a few, and we desperately need somewhere to cast our demons. I should say we need somewhere other than each other to cast our demons. In our country, we tend to take our anger, fear, and hatred, and cast it all over each other. Sometimes we cast our demons onto each other through our fearful words and angry rhetoric. Sometimes we cast our demons onto each other through hurtful actions that separate and divide us. Sometimes we cast our demons onto each other with sprays of bullets into unsuspecting nightclub patrons, moviegoers, prayer groups, or elementary school students. As much as the exceedingly vast majority of Americans would never cast their demons onto others by shooting them, there is a connection between our speech, our words and actions, and the bullets that fly. Fear, anger, and hatred lead only to greater fear, anger, and hatred, and eventually to division and killing. As Bishop Doyle wrote in his response to the mass shooting at Pulse nightclub last Sunday in Orlando: The Internet is already full of unchristian, disrespectful, and horrific responses supporting the shooting and demonizing Islam. The reality is that we in this country are responsible for creating a place where hate speech is glorified, unnecessary weapons of mass destruction are freely accessible, and violence is cheered. Yes America, we are reaping what we sow. I too believe we are reaping what we have sown, and I’m not talking about guns. I’m talking about the ways we talk to and about each other and especially how we talk to and about the other. There is so much fear, anger, and hatred constantly being spewed out in conversations on the internet, in coffee shops, on the radio, the TV, even in churches and in our homes. We have been setting an enormous blaze with our talk. As James wrote in James 3:5-10: How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire! 6And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed among our members as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body, sets on fire the cycle of nature, and is itself set on fire by Gehenna. 7For every species of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species, 8but no one can tame the tongue—a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse those who are made in the likeness of God. 10From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this ought not to be so. The blaze we have set with our tongues, with our words both written and spoken, is a blaze of fear, anger, and hatred, and fear, anger, and hatred are our demons. These demons have divided us, made us weak, and turned us against one another. These legions of demons have done to us what Jesus did to the legion of demons that we dwelling in the man. While the demons were together, acting in the man as one, they were strong. No chain could hold him. No people could restrain him. Once Jesus cast the demons into the herd of pigs, they were divided, and they were weak. They rushed headlong into the abyss, the very place where they feared going. As a country, as a church, as the Body of Christ, we have been divided by the legions of demons of fear, anger, and hatred. We have been weakened by our divisions and have been rushing headlong into the abyss. We need to stop casting our fear, anger, and hatred on one another, and we need to find another place to cast them. We need to find a safe place to cast our demons so that they won’t continue to cause greater harm, and the only place we can cast our demons without them harming others is God. One way of casting our demons upon God is prayer, particularly prayers of lament, as I wrote earlier this week. We read in the Psalms prayers of lament, prayers of people who are so fed up, that they are crying out to God, even blaming God for the problems that beset them, asking God to seek vengeance upon their enemies. Some of these prayers make a turn and offer blessings and praise to God; some of them do not and simply end with these prayers of anguished cries, calling for God’s vengeance and questioning God’s justice. We need to bring back the prayer of lament so that we can cast our demons upon God rather than upon each other. It sounds easy, especially for the preacher man to say that we should cast our fear, anger, and hatred upon God rather than each other. I realize that with some of my preaching about loving our enemies, not seeking retaliation, it may seem that I’m rather detached from the violence and hatred in our world. I am not. I fear for my children’s lives. I remember riding my bike a half a mile or more away from home, spending whole days down by the creak behind our neighborhood, totally unsupervised. I can’t imagine my kids doing that nowadays. I’ve come into adulthood in a world in which being shot by a sniper while stopping for gas along a highway is a viable reality for me and my children. I am afraid for my children and the world they are inheriting. I want to protect them. I want to stop anyone who would harm them, and in the moment, if someone was trying to kill them, I have little doubt that I would do everything in my power to stop them, even if it meant killing the killer. I don’t know if that goes against what Jesus taught or not; I simply know it is what I would do. At the same time, I know that the more I dwell on those thoughts and fears, those plans for horrific eventualities, the more the demons of fear, anger, and hatred fill my heart and guide my actions. I know that I can’t with any success rail against the things in this world that I don’t like. All my fearful and angry writing and speech will do is add fuel to the fire, increase the blaze, and cast even more demons upon others already plagued with demons of their own. I’ve done more than enough of that already, as have many of us, or all of us. We need to stop all of the blame and simple solutions for the problems in our world, given as ways to alleviate our fear, anger, and hatred. One easy target has been the government, folks saying the problems started because we took prayer out of schools or removed the 10 Commandments from government building. Before we start blaming governments or states or school districts for removing prayer or Christian symbols and practices, we need to look at the potential of logs in our own eyes, remove them, and then lead by example. Saying, “the problem is that they took prayer out of our schools,” is simply casting a demon of blame upon the world. Such a statement makes someone else to blame, and makes the problem someone else’s to solve. The problems of casting our demons upon others is a problem that is all of ours to solve. Render to God what is God’s. Give the demons of blame to God. Pray to him your blame of someone else. Or even blame God and pray that to him. God can take it. God would probably appreciate the honesty. God is the appropriate place to cast our demons, because unlike everything in all creation, our demons can’t hurt God. Render unto God what is God’s to deal with. Render unto God our demons of fear, anger, and hatred, so that he can cast them out. Like the woman last week who came to Jesus full of sin, weeping upon his feet, we need to come to Jesus full of demons and then weep them out at his feet. When we weep our demons out at Jesus’ feet, we will likely feel powerless. With that, we find yet one more demon with which we struggle: our powerlessness. We want solutions to the problems in our world and we are mostly powerless to make those solutions happen. So we rant, we criticize, demonize, we divide. Divided, we rush headlong into the abyss. We weren’t made for division. We were made to be unified in Jesus. Unity does not mean unanimity. With all of our difference, we were all baptized into the one body of Jesus Christ. “All baptized people are called to make Christ known as Savior and Lord, and to share in the renewing of his world.” (BCP p. 531 - Ordination: Priest) We were not made to share our anger for the destruction of this world. We were made to share our faith for the renewing of this world We certainly need to share our fears, our anger, and even our hate with others, but for the purpose of seeking help in bringing those demons to God. We are meant to help each other cast our demons out upon God. As baptized disciples of Jesus, we are meant to do for each other what Jesus did for the man suffering from a legion of demons. We are meant to help each other find a herd of wild hogs and help each other cast our demons there. Be not highminded, but fear: 21For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. 22Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. 23And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be grafted in: for God is able to graff them in again. 24For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert grafted contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree? 25For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. 26And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: 27For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins. 28As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the father's sakes. 29For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. 30For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief: 31Even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy. 32For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all. 33O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! 34For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? 35Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? 36For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever.
