Hi, this is Ahmed Shariff and you are listening to, From The Newsroom— your daily evening news catch-up show from Deccan Herald. Here is the top news of May 27, 2021: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said that there is "a political effort" to depict the current government in India in a certain way and there is a difference between the political imagery that has been "concocted" and actually the governance record out there. During a conversation with former US National Security Advisor General HR McMaster in ‘Battlegrounds' session on 'India: Opportunities And Challenges For A Strategic Partnership' presented by the Hoover Institution, Jaishankar on Wednesday also said that India is going through “a very stressful time" right now because of the pandemic. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention in the withdrawal of new regulations in Lakshadweep, saying the rules seek to penalise dissent and undermine grassroots democracy. In a letter to the prime minister, he said all this is being done by the new administrator Praful Khoda Patel in the guise of development and maintaining law and order. Reserve Bank of India on Thursday said that the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic has triggered revision of growth projections for the current financial year with consensus gravitating towards its earlier forecast of 10.5 per cent. The central bank, in its annual report for 2020-2021, further said that previous year has left a scar on the economy and "in the midst of the second wave, as 2021-22 commences, pervasive despair is being lifted by cautious optimism built up by vaccination drives.” Source: PTI

In your evening news brief, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee says at least one crore people were affected by Cyclone Yaas; Delhi High Court has awarded Rs 6 lakh interim compensation to a six-year-old victim of sexual assault, JEE (Advanced) postposed due to the pandemic and freedom fighter and centenarian H S Doreswamy is no more. Hi, this is Ahmed Shariff and you are listening to, From The Newsroom— your daily evening news catch-up show from Deccan Herald. Here is the top news of May 25, 2021: At least one crore people were affected and three lakh houses damaged in West Bengal due to the rough weather conditions arising out of cyclone 'Yaas', Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Wednesday. Cautioning people that high tide in seas, caused by the storm surge, would persist, Banerjee claimed that Bengal happens to be the "most-affected state". Cyclone 'Yaas' made its landfall on Wednesday morning near Dhamra port in Odisha, at 130-140 kmph, gusting to 155 kmph, according to Doppler radar data. The Delhi High Court has awarded Rs 6 lakh interim compensation to a six-year-old victim of sexual assault, observing that though the system cannot undo the offence it can provide psychological security or empowerment with monetary help besides prosecuting the offender. The high court, which set aside the trial court's order awarding Rs 50,000 interim compensation to the boy-child, enhanced the amount to Rs 6 lakh saying the previous sum was low, to say the least. Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani said that while attempting to quantify the compensation payable to the victim even at the interim stage, the court's effort should be to offer monetary recompense, to the extent possible, for atonement of the crime. The JEE (Advanced) 2021, which was scheduled to be held on July 03, 2021, has been postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The revised date of examination will be announced later. Noted freedom fighter and centenarian H S Doreswamy passed away on Wednesday afternoon due to cardiac arrest. The 104-year-old Gandhian was admitted to Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research a few days ago due to old age-related sickness including hypertension and bronchitis. In the first week of May, Doreswamy had tested positive for Covid-19. He had successfully fought the Covid-19 virus and was discharged on May 12 from the Jayadeva Hospital. Several prominent personalities including Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa have expressed condolences over the demise of freedom fighter. Source: DHNS/PTI

The state is set for a repeat of history: Will Mamata retain power or the BJP will trounce didi, the way she relegated the Left to the fringes in the state. Hi, this is Ahmed Shariff and welcome to The Lead by DH Radio. Tamil Nadu is a unique state. It's here that the national powers are reduced to play a smaller and the regional satraps and the Dravidian parties take up the major role. This time in the absence of J Jayalalithaa and M Karunanidhi, what will the election look like? Will V K Sasikala have a role to play? Can Chief Minister Edapadi Palaniswamy manage to hold power? Nanda: A close friend of mine told me that the director was looking at casting for a movie called "Arishadvarga" and I heard the script and we went ahead and collaborated. This is probably one of those few film noirs in Kannada. The film's universe is not of blacks and whites, but shades of grey. And Arvind (Kamath) is trying to capture most of those shades. My character is a very hard-boiled police inspector, who is lonely and that adds a certain dimension to the way he sees everything. Ahmed: What was your favourite part of the film? Nanda: I was allowed not to say it when I could do it. Most of the roles that are written these days are verbose and its because oral tradition plays a more important role. Most of our roles are weighed in terms of the dialogues they get to say. One of the happiest things for me was that you could behave where it was necessary and in case there was some line that could be passed because you could explore it in terms of nonverbal communication, that was favoured. This approach by Arvind gave me immense pleasure as an actor. There was no fear of not getting enough lines. This is not the film about lines, per se, but about behaviour and a lot of interesting things that unfold. To know more about the conversation, listen to the podcast.
