Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Rashid Khalidi, professor of Modern Arab Studies at Columbia University, to discuss his 2020 book The Hundred Years' War on Palestine: A History of Settler Colonialism and Resistance, 1917–2017, and his views on the Israel-Gaza conflict as it stands now. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the Supreme Court keeping Trump on the ballot for November, the GOP primary, the US airdropping aid to Gaza, Super Tuesday, Haiti's State of Emergency, the GOP's struggle to run the House, and the major anti-trust victory over the Jet Blue-Spirit merger, also parsing through Joe Biden and Kamala Harris tentatively wading into the “temporary ceasefire” conversation. Professor Rashid Khalidi then joins, first stepping back to explain why he began his work on Palestinian resistance in 1917, well before the establishment of the state of Israel, looking at the central role of the West – namely Britain and the US – in support and facilitating the violent establishment and maintenance of a Zionist apartheid state. Beginning in 1917, Professor Khalidi then works his way through the history of Palestinian's last century of struggle, first exploring occupation under the British mandate, the role of European nationalism and anti-semitism in facilitating the Balfour declaration and the establishment of a Zionist state, and the combination of violent British and Zionist repression against Palestinians, alongside mass ethnic cleansing, in the decades leading up to World War II. After touching on the evolution of both the Palestinian nationalist movement and the extremist zionist cause over this era, Rashid walks Sam and Emma through Israel's various extreme massacres and ethnic cleansing that occurred leading up to and during the 1948 Nakba, the role of the one-sided UN Partition plan in pushing the start of the catastrophe, and the devastating impact it had on the state of the Palestinian nationalist movement. Next, Professor Khalidi, Sam, and Emma look at the evolution of Israel's apartheid rule and ethnic cleansing over the two decades before the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, and the impact of that war in furthering the devastation, before looking at the rebirth of the Palestinian nationalist movement with the Palestinian Liberation Organization and First Intifada. After tackling the failure of the Oslo Accords (and the negotiations around them), Professor Khalidi runs through the major influence of US politics in all evolutions of the conflict in the second half of the century, a trend that would grow in the wake of the Second Intifada in 2000, and continues to this day, before wrapping the interview up with a quick assessment of the central role of the US in facilitating the ongoing genocide in Gaza, and the role of the other Arab states in the region. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma talk with John from San Antonio as he previews major Super Tuesday races including finding Feinstein's replacement and progressive battles in Texas, New York, North Carolina, and more. They also watch CNN's Christiane Amanpour nail Netanyahu's Special Advisor on Israel's involvement in the Flour Massacre, and Jesse Watters spotlights Tulsi Gabbard for Trump's VP. Trump stumbles over the Q-Anon anthem, Tyler from Washington explores the new era of social media, and Mitch McConnell's GOP colleagues begin to demand he align with Trump's agenda, plus, your calls and IMs! How does history relate to the present? What is settler colonialism? How are the two related to each other and what is the connection between the past to the present? What is Zionism? What is the Doctrine of Discovery/Dominion? Moreover, how does this relate to Indigenous peoples across Turtle Island? What are the parallels between the legacy of settler colonialism in what is presently the United States to the history of what is known as Palestine? With the continued escalation of settler colonial violence and genocides being perpetrated by the Israeli government against the Palestinian peoples in Gaza and the West Bank, we ask these questions including what is the history and birth of Zionism as a settler colonial project and what are stark similarities to the Doctrine of Discovery/Dominion as the basis for the birthing of the United States settler colonial project in dispossessing Native American Nations of their traditional homelands. The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 359: Ahimsa in Times of Conflict with Rula Wardeh   Description: One of the most important yoga teachings is ahimsa, usually translated as non-violence or non-harming. How do we practice this in times of conflict like the one we are witnessing now in Gaza, Palestine? What can we do to make a difference? Rula Wardeh shares her perspective on the obligations we all have to show up during times like these.   Rula is a Palestinian yoga teacher, who studied yoga in Canada. She lives in Jordan, an hour away from the Occupied Territory of West Bank, Palestine. She has family and friends in Gaza and her yoga students are all Palestinian. Rula introduced Yin Yoga to Jordan in 2012 and she now leads a unique Yin Yoga immersion course in Jordan & Cairo. Rula is also one of the directors and founding members of the NGO Yoga Mandala Project which provides refugee communities in Jordan with psychosocial Yoga and trauma related sessions.   In this conversation, Rula shares what her experience has been like holding space for Palestininans as Gaza continues to be bombarded and held under siege by Israel. She speaks about yoga activism, how she draws on the teachings of yoga and the 8 limbs for support as she continues to speak up for ceasefire in Palestine, and what yoga teachers can do in these times to make a difference.   If you have been wondering how you can show up and practice ahimsa as a yoga teacher in times of conflict, this episode is for you.   Key Takeaways: [2:05] This podcast is sponsored by OfferingTree and Pelvic Health Professionals. [2:55] Shannon introduces her guest for this episode - Rula Wardeh. This episode originally aired as a live conversation in December 2023. [5:22] What does Rula do as a yoga teacher? [8:16] Shannon shares some context about the 1948 Nakba in Palestine. [10:38] Rula shares how she started serving the population of urban refugees. [13:03] How has it felt for Rula to hold space for Palestinians or people who have family in Palestine? What has she learned from the experience? [21:08] Rula speaks to her experience of yoga activism: How do we implement what we have learned and what we teach in yoga? [25:26] We can start feeling disconnected from what is happening in Gaza when we only focus on the numbers. We need to also focus on the individual, personal stories coming out of Gaza. [28:55] What can people do when it feels to dysregulating to look at the news? [32:38] Rula explains how we can practice ahimsa in times of conflict. [36:17] We can draw on teachings from the eight limbs of yoga to guide us in how we should show up in times of conflict. [41:18] Shannon shares a comment from a live listener: How we feel is quite frankly irrelevant in the face of people being murdered. We should not be centering our feelings, especially not on social media. [41:58] How can you seek out the real truth and not fall into the trap of confirmation bias? [44:00] Watch the rest of this full interview with Rula on YouTube. [44:35] People are not their religion, their culture, or their government. We need to be mindful of conflating those. [46:47] What should we do if we're afraid to speak up or if we spoke up and got attacked? [50:10] Shannon reflects on her biggest takeaways from this conversation with Rula. Professor Khalidi weaves his multigenerational familial roots to historic Palestine with decades of academic scholarship to present a narrative that plainly addresses the so-called Israel-Palestine conflict for what it is. With full, unyielding participation, the government of the United States is aiding the State of Israel in its months' long bombardment of the population of Gaza, and stepping up its already horrific treatment of Palestinians in the occupied territories. As of the recording of this introduction, the official death toll in Gaza has reached over 20,000 according to Gaza's Ministry of Health, with over 8,000 described as “missing,” since the IDF's campaign began following the events of October 7th. While this campaign is extraordinary, even compared to previous military incursions into Gaza, it is part of a larger project that has been ongoing for over a century. To participate in the Feb 25, 2024 book club for The Hundred Years' War on Palestine, join the Discord server here.*The reposted  portion has been edited down a bit (mostly to remove my meanderings) but you can still hear the original audio here.ResourcesOrganizationsPalestinian Youth MovementJewish Voices for Peace (has easy links for action!)Media (Podcasts, News, etc.)Electronic IntifadaRevolutionary Left RadioThe Empire FilesVideosMichael Brooks on Israel/Palestine: "It's not complicated" (YouTube)ISRAEL'S ALLIANCES TO DESTABILIZE MIDDLE EAST Max Ajl (YouTube)PDFs/ArticlesUnderstanding Antisemitism: An Offering to Our Movement (PDF) | Jews for Racial & Economic JusticeThe Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism (PDF) | JerusalemDeclaration.orgBooksAn Army Like No Other: How the Israel Defense Force Made a Nation | by Haim Bresheeth-ZabnerEthnic Cleansing of Palestine | by Ilan PappeThe Hundred Years' War on Palestine: A History of Settler Colonialism and Resistance, 1917–2017 | by Rashid KhalidiGoliath: Life and Loathing in Greater Israel | by Max BlumenthalDecolonizing Israel, Liberating Palestine Zionism, Settler Colonialism, and the Case for One Democratic State | by Jeff Halper - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Pay me, daddy!Patreon | Venmo | PayPal | Cash AppFollow me and give me validation!Instagram | Twitter | Facebook | WebsiteJoin the community!Discord

At the time of recording this episode, we are on day 62 of Israel's most recent war on Gaza. The situation is beyond horrific, as over 20,000 Palestinian men, women and children have been killed and 1.7 million have been displaced from their homes. Numerous international humanitarian laws have been broken as civialian areas, hospitals and schools have been attacked, and white phospherous has been used on civilian populations, with catastrophic impacts. On today's episode, I'm speaking with Rashid Khalidi, author and historian about understanding the last 100 years, in an attempt to truly understand and uncover what is happening today.  We talk about the Balfour declaration of 1917, the end of British colonial rule in Palestine, the growth of the Israeli colonial project, the ways in which Palestinians have resisted, and so much more. Rashid Khalidi is Edward Said Professor of Arab Studies at Columbia University. He received a B.A. from Yale University in 1970 and a D. Phil. from Oxford University in 1974. He has taught at the Lebanese University, the American University of Beirut, and the University of Chicago. He is co-editor of the Journal of Palestine Studies and has served as President of the Middle East Studies Association. He has written or co-edited ten books, including The Hundred Years' War on Palestine: A History of Settler-Colonialism and Resistance, which we'll be speaking about today. He has written over a hundred scholarly articles on aspects of Middle East history and politics, as well as opinion pieces in The New York Times, The Financial Times, The Boston Globe, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Tribune Vanguardia, The London Review of Books, and The Nation. Rashid Khalidi lived in Beirut, and was deeply engaged in Lebanese politics in the 70s, and during the Lebanese war of 1982. He has played an active role in peace talks and negotiations in the region in the 80s and 90s.Buy The Hundred Years' War on Palestine here: https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/the-hundred-years-war-on-palestine-a-history-of-settler-colonial-conquest-and-resistance-rashid-i-khalidi/2901891?ean=9781781259344If you enjoyed this episode, please do reach out and let me know! More than 16,000 Palestinians, most of them civilians, have been killed in Israel's response to Hamas's Oct. 7 attack. As Israel resumes ground operations in Gaza, is there an end in sight? Rashid Khalidi is the author of The Hundred Years' War on Palestine: A History of Settler Colonialism and Resistance and a professor at Columbia University. It is now almost six weeks since the horrors in Israel and Palestine started – again, but this time in an unprecedented manner. It has never been so cruel so far. So much has been said about all of it already and it is still happening anyway. People are still getting killed on a daily basis by a huge military apparatus that is supported by the big Western countries of this world. Words don`t seem relevant or powerful enough in the face of this. The increasingly loud and aggressive discussions about Israel and Palestine seem to create more and more division instead of an understanding and an end to the killing. We took some time to reflect how we could add something constructive to the horrors unfolding. Because especially in those dark and violent times Utopias are needed more than ever. So in this episode we don`t give you a lecture about “the conflict”. We`ll tell you how we tried to create an Utopian moment in the midst of all the darkness, violence and despair happening. A tiny moment of freedom and justice from Germany for Gaza and for people in Germany that do not feel heard in their pain and disagreement towards what is happening. We`ll talk about: How we organized a protest with watermelons and for freedom rights for all people The very special German relation to Israel and Palestine The difference between antisemitism and criticizing the government of Israel The importance of freedom rights, especially the right of free speech The relation between journalism and activism A Haward study on the success of non-violent protest A young man from Gaza who is sending messages of comfort to the protesters in Hamburg More information about context and history of Israel/Palestine: BOOKS: The blue between sky and water by Susan Abulhawa The Birth of Israel: Myths and Realities by Simha Flapan The Hundred Years' War on Palestine: A History of Settler Colonialism and Resistance, 1917–2017 by Rashid Khalidi Gaza: An Inquest Into Its Martyrdom by Norman Finkelstein The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine by Ilan Pappé FILMS: The Promise Omar 5 Broken Cameras The heart of Jenin PODCASTS: in German: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjYxIkjGvQE in English: recommendations? Every story has a beginning. Every conflict has its roots. For some, the Israel/Palestine conflict is rooted in scripture and written in blood. Others claim it boils down to a deadly dispute over real estate. There's a reason why “peace in the Middle East” feels out of reach and why so many have thrown their hands up. It's complicated. Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to be sworn in as Israel's 15th prime minister in the coming days. Israel's government, which is expected to be the most right-wing in the country's history, has raised questions about the role the United States should play, if any, in what could be a high consequence and volatile year for Israelis and Palestinians. But before we can begin to think about America's current role, we wanted to explore what role the United States has played historically in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Has the United States always been an ardent supporter of Israel? Has it ever taken meaningful steps to help de-escalate the conflict? Today, we see children killed in Gaza by Israeli airstrikes, but anyone who gets their understanding of the Israel-Palestine conflict from news reports lacks the context necessary to make sense of the horrors they are seeing. To understand why there is an Israel-Palestine conflict today, we have to go back a hundred years to see what Palestine was like before the state of Israel was established and how things changed. Joining us to explain the background of the conflict is one of the leading historians on the region, Professor Rashid Khalidi of Columbia University. He is the author of The Hundred Years' War on Palestine: A History of Settler Colonialism and Resistance, 1917–2017, edits the Journal of Palestine Studies, and in the 90s served as an advisor to the Palestinian delegation to the Madrid and Washington Arab-Israeli peace negotiations. Prof. Khalidi's book is essential reading for anyone who wants to know where modern-day Israel and Palestine came from in the first place. Among topics discussed:What Palestine was like in the early 1900s, when the Arab population of Palestine was about 95% and political Zionism was a long way from achieving its objective of establishing a stateHow 19th and early 20th century Zionist leaders understood that establishing a Jewish state in Palestine would necessarily involve a project of ethnic cleansing, because of the region's overwhelming Arab majorityHow Prof. Khalidi's own Palestinian great-great-great uncle, who served as mayor of Jerusalem, personally pleaded with Theodor Herzl (father of political Zionism) in the early 1900s to "leave Palestine alone" rather than establishing the Jewish state thereHow Palestinian resistance to the original establishment of Israel is misunderstood to this day: it wasn't a product of irrational anti-Semitism, but a response to being dispossessed and not granted the right of self-determinationThe myth that Palestinians have rejected fair offers of statehood and are the architects of their own misfortuneGolda Meir's infamous statement that there "was no such thing as Palestinians," and the argument that Palestinian national identity is a contemporary construct. In fact, both Palestinian and Israeli national identities are recent, as is the nation-state form itselfThe project of "memoricide": Israel's deliberate efforts to erase the memory of what Palestine was like in the years prior to Zionist colonization and frame the Palestinian resistance to dispossession as aggressive and terroristicWhy the establishment of Israel was similar to (and different from) other kinds of colonialism, and the way colonial projects always treat indigenous populations as irrational, violent, backward, and in need of removalHow changes in U.S. political opinion are essential if Palestinians are ever going to receive the right to self-determinationThe Israel-Palestine conflict is often treated as complicated. In fact, Prof. Khalidi argues, it is not very complicated at all: it is precisely the kind of conflict that can be expected to arise when a colonial project tries to displace a country's native inhabitants and denies them equal rights. Prof. Khalidi mentions Nathan's experience at the Guardian, which is discussed here. Discussion of the shooting of peaceful Palestinian protesters in 2018 can be found here.  Map of Palestine before the project of expelling, dispossessing, and occupying Palestinians had succeeded, taken from Before Their Diaspora: A Photographic History of the Palestinians 1876-1948

From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free. Here's a history lesson on Israel and Palestine. It's dense but simmered down enough for anyone to understand. First we do a little book review on the principle Zionist text, The Jewish Question, to better understand the logic of Zionism. Then we cover the history of Israel/Palestine, from the initial Jewish migrations, to the revolts in the 1930's, to the Nakba, to the establishment of the Palestinian Authority. Here's a list of the sources we used for this episode as well as the initial piece Saad wrote earlier this year (which uses many of the same sources).Saad's piece on Medium: https://stmahmood012.medium.com/the-history-behind-israel-palestine-8d94ec4bde33"The 1936-39 Revolt in Palestine". Palestine and Israel, each now with their own strong and vocal supporters in the United States, are at the center of competing narratives about people groups seeking sovereignty over their own destinies. Is there room for both in the heads and hearts of Americans?   Rashid Khalidi is the Edward Said Professor of Modern Arab Studies at Columbia University, an endowed chair named for Said, a professor, public intellectual, and a founder of the academic field of postcolonial studies. Khalidi has written a number of books on the history of Palestine and the Middle East. With his latest effort - The Hundred Years War on Palestine: A History of Settler Colonialism and Resistance: 1917-2017 - Khalidi heeded the advice of his son and sought a more personal approach in his work. The result is an approachable account of a Palestinian people that has long been defined in the American consciousness, the author contends, by a narrative it didn't write. Inserting himself into the story, Khalidi uses archival accounts of generations of family members from the region – mayors, judges, diplomats and journalists, to insert a Palestinian perspective into his chronicle of the last century of conflict. Governing Editor-at-Large Clay Jenkinson recently spoke with Khalidi about the book and the need, the possibilities, and the probabilities for a new Palestinian narrative. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

A conversation about Palestine, socialism, and anti-imperialist solidarity across borders. Palestine holds a central place in socialist organizing, and the role of socialism is crucial to the struggle to free Palestine. To mark the recent publication of Palestine: A Socialist Introduction, our speakers will discuss possibilities for connecting the struggle against occupation and apartheid in Palestine, to the international solidarity movement and growing support for socialism across the globe. We will analyse the impact of recent normalization agreements between Israel and Arab states, the upcoming Palestinian Authority elections, and how we can build a global socialist movement that tackles Israeli apartheid. Join Sumaya Awad, brian bean and Yara Hawari for a discussion on these themes, chaired by Ilan Pappé.
