Sam Newman, Mike Sheahan and Don Scott - 'You Cannot Be Serious'

David Mann AM December 17, 2023 marks 50 years at 3AW for David Mann. Mann is potentially the longest serving person at a single radio station, and perhaps also for the multiple roles he has held there either full time, part time, or now as Mann About Town. Mann started as an office boy just before Christmas in 1973, before being promoted to panel operator, then given a journalism cadetship. The cadetship led to an on air role for two decades. He also was production manager, creative director and the promotions and marketing manager for 23 years, holding other positions such as Chairman of the Victorian Radio Time Club. During the Ash Wednesday fires in 1983 3AW dropped all regular programming and used their immediacy to offer on the spot assistance. A fundraiser that followed, which Mann was heavily involved in, raised more than $1 million to distribute to people who had been left with nothing.   Mann also supports people during and after disasters in an operational capacity with more than three decades of service to the Melbourne Metropolitan Fire Brigade, Ambulance Victoria and the Victorian Police Force. He was awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in 2006 for “service to the community through a range of police, nursing, heritage and emergency services organisations” and in June 2018 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM). This year also marks the 35th that Mann has been a volunteer part of the Pensioners Christmas Party, conducted every Christmas day and looking after senior citizens and single parents. Mann said: “When the world is bad, radio is good. The 3AW team, listeners and sponsors make a difference to those in need. It's still one of the most powerful mediums around and I'm very proud to be a part of the number one station in Melbourne.”

Mike recently retired after 40 years of service with Ambulance Victoria.Mike's father died of sudden cardiac arrest when he was 19 years old. It was a huge loss for his family, however Mike found his purpose in life when he decided to become a paramedic. Initially Mike trained as a paramedic before he started working on the road as a clinician and more recently a local supervisor, managing a team of 45 staff.Mike's vegan journey began when he attended a horse riding accident. While caring for the patient, he noticed her horse was bleeding, suffering and in severe distress. The patient's mother advised she had a called a vet, however the events that unravelled still haunt Mike to this day. Mike then started asking questions about how animals were treated. He initially went vegan in 2014 for health reasons, but quickly felt deceived by animal agriculture. After making enquiries about local animal rights groups, Mike learnt about the Animal Justice Party and felt at home with like minded people. Mike ran as a lower house candidate in the last state election and enjoyed being on the campaign trail. Seeing kangaroos in his local area and hearing about the Victorian kangaroo harvest program, Mike puts his efforts into advocating for kangaroos through letter writing, blogging and advertising campaigns. In this episode, Mike shares the highs and lows of his emergency services career, life after retirement as well as his fourth successful attempt at the 100km Great Ocean Walk.https://www.facebook.com/mike.fueryhttps://www.instagram.com/furious_mike01/

Well it's been a minute since our last episode, but we are delighted to be back with a very special episode in a format that we haven't tried before. A few weeks ago, This Emergency Life packed up our recording equipment and headed up to the Australasian College of Paramedicine (ACP) inaugural 2023 Critical Care Summit on the Gold Coast to record a live episode of the podcast. The ACP is the peak professional body representing and supporting paramedics and student paramedics across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand since 1973. The ACP 2023 Critical Care Summit was the first time this novel and inspiring meeting has taken place and boy have they set a high bar. The summit is the brainchild of Intensive Care Paramedic and Senior Lecturer at Monash University Department of Paramedicine, Tim Andrews and senior Intensive Care Flight Paramedic (MICA) with Ambulance Victoria and Adjunct Senior Lecturer Dr Ben Meadley. Tim and Ben brought together a broad program of interdisciplinary speakers and teams for two days of targeted education and engagement with the central theme Contemporary care through collaboration.TEL were invited to record a live-on-stage episode of the podcast with free range to pick the episode's guests for a chat about… well whatever we wanted! As you can imagine it was no easy task narrowing down our guest list to three people from the overwhelming expertise and experience represented by the delegates and speakers at the summit.During the live podcast we spoke with flight paramedic and PhD candidate Hanna Latta, Director Australasian College of Paramedicine and Senior Paramedic Specialist, Marty Nichols and Ben Meadley. These are three people who have a lot to say about the past, present and future of emergency care in Australasia. During the hour we spoke to Hanna, Ben and Marty about everything from the nexus between pre-hospital care and the ED, the evolving roles of paramedics and primary health care, advanced and specialist practice in pre-hospital care and the emergency care community's roles and responsibilities in society. Our sincerest thanks the Australasian College of Paramedicine, Tim and Ben and everybody at the summit for the invitation and making us feel so welcome. We hope you enjoy hearing from Hanna, Ben and Marty as much as we enjoyed talking to them live on stage.

His career in Ambulance Victoria has been rich with opportunities. Only a few years had passed after qualifying as a paramedic he was offered the opportunity to undertake intensive care training, known as MICA. He found the role at times challenging, but highly rewarding.  Tenures at the different ambulance colleges unearthed a love of teaching that continues today and has spanned more than 25 years. Assisting paramedics to master their craft has been one of his most satisfying achievements. After 15 years as a paramedic, he achieved his ultimate career goal after joining Air Ambulance, working on fixed and rotary wing aircraft. He describes the role as extreme, attending to the sickest and most seriously injured patients. A role that has seen him in the waters of Bass Straight, the deep Victorian bush and on top of the highest snow-covered mountains, all to help a person in need.  He regards his experiences working with highly talented paramedics, pilots and crewmen at Air Ambulance as a career highlight, “To work in a team of people committed to helping a patient in crisis is a privilege. To know that your team has played a small part in saving a life, there can be no greater reward”. For more go to, https://www.darrenhodge.com/  Follow me on Instagram and  YouTube. Carbon impact study of triage services at Ambulance Victoria

Ambulance Victoria has committed to become a more sustainable ambulance service. This includes achieving net zero emissions five years prior to the Victorian State Government commitment of 2050 with additional emissions reduction targets for 2025 and 2030. By fulfilling these targets, the carbon footprint for each patient cared for by Ambulance Victoria will be halved by 2030. It is apparent that to meet these emission reduction targets, Ambulance Victoria's current model of care needs perpetual refinement. Reducing emissions from electricity and fleet start to look easy in comparison to reducing low value care. Delivering better care to a patients according to their particular healthcare needs suggests that our pre-hospital service needs to be reimagined to start prior to any patient picking up the phone to dial Triple 000. Ambulance Victoria are discovering new ways to offer best care for particular patient cohorts via new technologies such as telehealth and the Virtual ED and by partnering across our communities primary and secondary healthcare networks, to offer timely support to those for whom an ambulance doesn't offer the greatest benefit. In 2021, Ambulance Victoria undertook a study to map the carbon pollution associated with its Triage Services and measure changes in carbon pollution resulting from the use of alternate patient care pathways. The analysis revealed interesting results that have implications for pre-hospital service design in the future. We hope that this study offers insight into new ways of thinking for decision makers and enables a triple bottom line approach to assessing the benefit of programs and keeping an awareness of how to serve the community in more environmentally sustainable ways. Using a multipronged approach to improving healthcare sustainability at Ambulance Victoria can reduce the environmental impact of pre-hospital healthcare services and thereby minimise the health impacts from the sector that are associated with dangerous climate change.

While in charge of Ambulance Victoria, Tony led significant transformation to improve the health and well-being of their workforce and the response they provide to the community. In this broad-reaching discussion, Tony explains the structure, organization and funding models of EMS down under and then Rob and Tony identify current challenges, issues and solutions common to both the U.S. and Australia, including the dreaded hospital handover challenges as well as reduction in lights and siren responses. TOP QUOTES FROM THIS EPISODE “We know at least one in five people who call triple zero, our 911 equivalent, don't require an emergency ambulance and so new models of care are being developed.” “When people call triple zero, they no longer expect that they will automatically get an ambulance, as often described to people, you don't walk into a hospital triage and say I'd like you to admit me to the coronary care unit,, you get triaged, you work out what is wrong by a health professional and you get the care you need; that's exactly the same being applied in the paradigm of ambulance service delivery here in Victoria and the rest of Australia.” “In the next decade or so, I wouldn't be surprised if we see predominantly women making up the majority of staff working on frontline ambulances.” “New models of care have been developed. We have looked at the MPDS grid and where the disposition of those patients go to so we have reduced significantly the number of lights and sirens responses which has enabled us.” “Issues of transfer of care in hospital are a real challenge for ambulance services in the time it takes to transfer patients and there is no easy fix for that.” “If you are a paramedic who has gone to university, done your training, wants to deliver care and you are spending a significant proportion of your shift in an emergency department caring for your patient before he can offload it, that can be demoralizing and that probably goes against why you joined in the first place.” EPISODE CONTENTS 1:16 Introducing Tony Walker 2:00 The scale and scope of Australian Services 05:45 Healthcare funding – how does the patient get their healthcare 7:45 EMS system organization and deployment 09:15 Degrees and paramedic education 11:50 Student debt … or not! 14:10 Is Australia over-producing graduate medics? 16:40 Alternative treatment models 19:00 Reducing lights and siren responses 21:08 Public expectation education 23:02 Looking after your people 25:50 Handover delay at the ED – a global issue 27:00 Gender and diversity 27:34 Scheduling and rostering – creating a flexible roster that meets the needs of the individual and service 28:40 Hospital capacity and flow issues 31:08 How can you work in Australia? In this week's episode of The People's Project with David Limbrick MP and Human Rights Lawyer Peter Fam: EXPERTS ATTACK VACCINE MANDATES The esteemed British Medical Journal (which has been braver than most journals) details the insane politicisation of mandates and the demonisation of people backfiring for the medical establishment. We read out the most egregious statements by world leaders. AUSTRALIANS WON'T FORGET Forget political parties, Australians open their own wallets to fund political ads against premiers. The anger stems from failing emergency services that governments refuse to fund. We also air the bombshell from Chairman of ESTA (Victoria's 000) Roger Leming who was fired for warning in 2016 that 000 was about to fail. Ambulance Victoria continues to spend up big on gender and diversity executives. STOP BLAMING THE PANDEMIC Victorians continue to die on Daniel Andrews' watch in Victoria and he issues a personal apology...blaming the virus. We air 2014 footage of Daniel Andrews raging against an ambulance crisis saying 'we can't afford another 4 years of tragedy...we can't have families left on their own...too many people taken too soon because the ambulance took too long.' THE CHICKENS COME HOME TO ROOST Human rights lawyer Peter Fam details how the law moves and changes with the times, predicting an inevitable onslaught of civil negligence cases against medical professionals. David Limbrick MP explains his idea for a non-profit organisation to fund human rights cases against government, and have a 'chilling effect' on human rights abuses as agencies begin to fear the accountability of real oversight. His career in Ambulance Victoria has been rich with opportunities. Only a few years had passed after qualifying as a paramedic he was offered the opportunity to undertake intensive care training, known as MICA. He found the role at times challenging, but highly rewarding. Tenures at the different ambulance college's unearthed a love of teaching that continues today and has spanned more than 25 years. Assisting paramedics to master their craft has been one of his most satisfying achievements. After 15 years as a paramedic he achieved his ultimate career goal after joining Air Ambulance working on both fixed and rotary wing aircraft. He describes the role as extreme, attending the sickest and most seriously injured patients. A role that has seen him in the waters of Bass Straight, the deep Victorian bush and on top of the highest snow covered mountains, all to help a person in need.Find me on Instagram:  Instagram.com/booksbehindthebadgeIntro Music:  Instagram.com/deputy_hookemFind Darren: Darrenhodge.com

Kirsten is a 20 year veteran in the Victorian health system. Her dream was always to become a paramedic, and after 7 years as a registered nurse in critical care she achieved her goal and went on to serve as a paramedic for a further 13 years. In late 2021 she was given an impossible choice - submit to Ambulance Victoria's vaccination mandate for Covid-19 and risk serious consequences due to her pre-existing medical condition, or be fired from the organisation that she loved. Leading up to the launch of Covid-19 vaccinations in Australia, Kirsten chose to undertake additional training to be ready to assist in the vaccine rollout but despite 20 years of dedication and passion, her termination was cold and sudden. This is her story. ------------------------------------- DISCERNABLE The Video Archive: https://discernable.io Prefer audio? In case you missed it earlier in the week, one of New Zealand's favourite musical exports somehow managed to break the internet. Obviously if you are reading this on your phone it means the internet wasn't actually broken for long, in all truth, it wasn't broken at all, but we all know how news and gossip sites like to oversell and exaggerate things. So for the unaware, on Monday when singer, songwriter extraordinaire Lorde, decided to tease new music coming in 2021, by dropping a picture of her butt, in all it's glorious cover art detail, the internet apparently lost its collective mind. Doesn't take much does it? Obviously Em and Michael have deep feels for all that Lorde does musically, so the arrival of her butt, as seen from below as it flies through the air, to announce a new album, was enough to send both of them into a picture sharing frenzy of SMS chat and excitement. So to get things started Em and Michael devote a few minutes to talking about Lorde's glorious butt reveal for her forthcoming album ‘Solar Power'. Is it a climate change anthem, is this better than Billie Eilish's recent Vogue cover reveal and what exactly would it look like if Em decided to tackle the cover herself, all these questions do get answered. Then we move onto the comedy special that everyone is raving about, Bo Burnham's ‘Inside' on Netflix. To say that Em and Michael were shook by ‘Inside' is an understatement, the music, the lighting, the songs, the unrelenting lockdown feels, it is so epic on so many levels. So if you're yet to indulge and give it a viewing, expect to be inundated with half a bajillion reasons why you should put it in front of your eye holes immediately. Finally we step into the murky world of conspiracy theories again, but this time around it's a lot closer to home. This one involves Victorian Liberals treasury spokesperson, Louise Staley, who issued a press release on Monday (the same day the internet was supposedly broken by Lorde...does that mean her bottom is somehow involved in the moon landing of Bill Gates with his 5G DNA samples...kidding hehe) anyway Louise's press release included a list of 12 “unanswered” questions about Dan Andrews back injury. It basically set the cats amongst the conspiracy pigeons (are they even a thing?) and ended up meaning Ambulance Victoria had to release a press statement about Dan's injury. It also turns out Em was actually in the hospital the same time as Dan, so all the receipts are coming home to roost with those cooing conspiracy pigeons, meh this pigeon idiom just got fully weird. We also find out more info on Hot Auslan Guy and a conspiracy theory Em and Michael suggested in our previous episode, PLUS MIchael got the vaccine jab, so strap yourself in for a very busy ride that starts with butt chat and ends with a tiny prick, see what we did there, okay carry on.
