In a dimly lit room on Curwen Street, an old wooden table bears the stains of countless encounters. A mysterious woman offers a strange drink, and memories begin to blur. What starts as a simple recollection of childhood fears spirals into a haunting journey of self-discovery. As the lines between past and present, memory and reality fade, one question emerges: who really sits at this table, and what awaits in the small, windowless room at the top of the stairs? This chilling tale explores the inevitability of fate and the secrets we keep, even from ourselves. Here's a short story that I've written for my forthcoming live readings around Halloween. What began as a love triangle turned into a chilling tale of greed, betrayal, and murder, culminating in a public execution that would challenge the very nature of capital punishment in Great Britain. (The Murderous Mannings) *** In 1720, amidst a perilous pirate attack on the Atlantic, a newborn's cry changed the course of destiny. Ocean-Born Mary, christened by buccaneers and gifted with a bolt of green silk, would grow from a maritime legend into a symbol of courage and resilience in colonial New England, her extraordinary birth weaving a tapestry of fact and fiction that continues to captivate imaginations centuries later. (A Pirate's Godchild, Ocean-Born Mary) *** On the morning of June 20, 2001, Andrea Yates shocked the nation by drowning her five children, one by one, in the family bathtub. Years of untreated mental illness, compounded by religious fanaticism and postpartum psychosis, culminated in this unimaginable tragedy. Was it the work of a tortured mind, or something darker at play? (Did The Devil Make Her Do It?) *** Deep in the ancient folds of the Appalachian Mountains, where time seems to slow and shadows linger, legends have taken root for millennia. These peaks have become a breeding ground for supernatural tales that blend seamlessly with the landscape. The sheer age and untamed nature of Appalachia have given birth to a rich tapestry of myths, from the Mothman, to ghosts, to the Devil himself. (Modern Mythology and Ancient Appalachia) *** In the heart of Preston, Ladywell Street is infamous for a chilling spectral presence capable of shifting forms—from eerie footsteps to a blood-soaked apparition known as the Bannister Doll. Once a beautiful young woman, Dolly Bannister met a tragic death at the hands of her father, a punishment for a crime she didn't commit. Now, her restless spirit seeks retribution, haunting the streets and striking fear into anyone who dares to cross her path. (The Haunting of Ladywell Street) *** In 1984, a sleepy English village became the unlikely stage for a mind-bending mystery when a schoolteacher's computer began receiving messages from a man claiming to be from 1546. As past and present collided through a BBC Micro, Ken Webster and his friends found themselves entangled in a web of Tudor English, future prophecies, and inexplicable phenomena that would challenge everything they thought they knew about time and technology. People have been asking for more of my own stories, so here's one. However, I have to warn you that I use the f-word in it and it is rather dark. It's possibly as dark as my Whitehaven Bodysnatcher, plus it has swearing (though it is necessary for the character I feel). So, if you prefer my sweeter stories, or don't like that word being used, I would avoid this one.It all starts with a man going walking in the Black Forest in Germany...New Patreon RequestBuzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! Our protagonist, an unnamed young man, is plagued by an eerie recurring nightmare. In his dream, he visits a friend's foreboding home, inhabited by an ever-changing roster of silent and grim figures. Foremost among them is the unsettling Mrs. Stone, who persistently assigns him a room in the tower - a room that fills him with an indescribable dread. As the characters in the dream grow older and more bizarre over time, the terror continues to twist and turn. This episode of EMS One-Stop With Rob Lawrence is brought to you by Lexipol, the experts in policy, training, wellness support and grants assistance for first responders and government leaders. To learn more, visit lexipol.com. In this EMS One-Stop international edition, this month, Rob Lawrence talks with Professor Tony Walker, immediate past chief executive officer of Ambulance Victoria, a professor with the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences and Bachelor Paramedic Studies at Monash University. While in charge of Ambulance Victoria, Tony led significant transformation to improve the health and well-being of their workforce and the response they provide to the community. In this broad-reaching discussion, Tony explains the structure, organization and funding models of EMS down under and then Rob and Tony identify current challenges, issues and solutions common to both the U.S. and Australia, including the dreaded hospital handover challenges as well as reduction in lights and siren responses. TOP QUOTES FROM THIS EPISODE “We know at least one in five people who call triple zero, our 911 equivalent, don't require an emergency ambulance and so new models of care are being developed.” “When people call triple zero, they no longer expect that they will automatically get an ambulance, as often described to people, you don't walk into a hospital triage and say I'd like you to admit me to the coronary care unit,, you get triaged, you work out what is wrong by a health professional and you get the care you need; that's exactly the same being applied in the paradigm of ambulance service delivery here in Victoria and the rest of Australia.” “In the next decade or so, I wouldn't be surprised if we see predominantly women making up the majority of staff working on frontline ambulances.” “New models of care have been developed. We have looked at the MPDS grid and where the disposition of those patients go to so we have reduced significantly the number of lights and sirens responses which has enabled us.” “Issues of transfer of care in hospital are a real challenge for ambulance services in the time it takes to transfer patients and there is no easy fix for that.” “If you are a paramedic who has gone to university, done your training, wants to deliver care and you are spending a significant proportion of your shift in an emergency department caring for your patient before he can offload it, that can be demoralizing and that probably goes against why you joined in the first place.” EPISODE CONTENTS 1:16 Introducing Tony Walker 2:00 The scale and scope of Australian Services 05:45 Healthcare funding – how does the patient get their healthcare 7:45 EMS system organization and deployment 09:15 Degrees and paramedic education 11:50 Student debt … or not! 14:10 Is Australia over-producing graduate medics? 16:40 Alternative treatment models 19:00 Reducing lights and siren responses 21:08 Public expectation education 23:02 Looking after your people 25:50 Handover delay at the ED – a global issue 27:00 Gender and diversity 27:34 Scheduling and rostering – creating a flexible roster that meets the needs of the individual and service 28:40 Hospital capacity and flow issues 31:08 How can you work in Australia? Motown Alumni Association Billy James Wilson was born March 14, 1957, in Ann Arbor, Michigan to BJ and Anita Motley. He had 3 siblings and is the oldest of the group. He is the last living member of his immediate family (with the exception of his mother Anita). Wilson originally grew up in Detroit, Michigan on a little known street called Mayberry Grand about a mile away from the former headquarters of Motown Records. Because of urban renewal the family was forced to Move to the small village of  Willow Run by the age of 6 years old. Where he lived down the street from Nick Ashford who would eventually become the second half of Motown songwriting team Ashford and Simpson; and around the corner of gospel great Marvin Miller, amongst others. Wilson's parents broke up and went their separate ways by the time the move occurred, and when times got bad for his mother and she couldn't properly take care of her four children, he and his siblings had to move with his father, who had moved to Ypsilanti Michigan a few miles from Willow Run. With his father, Wilson lived a moderately middle-class life with his siblings and stepsister Chiquita Maine and Claudine Motley (his stepmother). His step mother (who he fell in love with immediately) “was a living, walking black Marilyn Monroe as far as he and my brother Bobby were concerned” said Wilson. “My last name is Wilson because my parents were not married when I was born” said Wilson.  Wilson's career started in Second Baptist church in Ypsilanti along with a bunch of family members what all went to the same church. His father forced Wilson to be a singer in church and he sucked really bad! Eventually as time went on he learned to sing well, got with his friend Tony Walker

Interest in machine language and artificial intelligence has been growing and growing since around 2015. It was a perfect storm where storage prices decreased, and virtualization became standard.  Like most maturing industries, challenges appeared. It was found that the conclusions provided by artificial intelligence were dependent on the quality of the data it collected. This finding became so common that in 2020 the federal government responded with Executive Order 13960 promoting the use of trustworthy intelligence in the federal government. This is an interview with a focus on applying that guidance across many federal areas, including cybersecurity. Technology leaders from the National Science Foundation have formulated the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource Task Force (NAIRR) https://www.nsf.gov/cise/national-ai.jsp  to give guidance on using data more effectively. Recommendations include the categories of security privacy, civil rights, and sustaining the resource. The goal was to help get control of the unwieldy and expanding IT environments. Wayne LeRiche, Palo Alto Networks, gives an example of applied AI with some of the security concerns relating to Domain Name Servers (DNS).  Attacking a DNS server is a classic approach malicious actors have used for years.  The traditional method of defense is rule-based.  If “x” occurred, then react with “Y.” Attackers can ratchet up the attack with something unknown that the rules-based system can't handle it.  AI can handle drastic increases in speed that a rules-based system can't. Further, artificial intelligence can understand unknown methods of denying service to the DNS. Rather than focusing on one aspect of prevention, experts on the panel suggest that Rule-Based and Machine-Learning DNS security services be used in parallel. Finally, Tony Walker, NetScout, presents a scenario where one part of the team is proficient in network management while another part of the team has a sophisticated knowledge of data management. The solution that is provided by AI must be tempered with careful consideration of data sources and the ability to use that knowledge in an environment full of people with different skill sets.

Will cooperation in space with Russia survive war in Ukraine? For more than half a century, through international conflict and political turmoil, the west has cooperated on a wide range of activities in space with the Soviets and then the Russians, culminating in the International Space Station. We speak with Mac Evans, former head of the Canadian Space Agency about why the war in the Ukraine runs the risk of ending that long collaboration. What will the new UN treaty to control plastic pollution need to achieve? On March 2, at a meeting of the United Nations Environmental Assembly in Nairobi the world's nations agreed to negotiate a global agreement to control plastic pollution. We speak to Max Liboiron, a plastics pollution researcher at Memorial University of Newfoundland, about how the world created its plastics problem, and Tony Walker, who studies plastics pollution at Dalhousie University, on what he hopes the treaty will accomplish. Christopher Whalen, a palaeontologist from the American Museum of Natural History in New York has identified the oldest vampyropod, the group that includes ancestors of the octopus. The 328 million year old fossil from Montana is in extraordinary condition and is 82 million years older than the previous oldest find. But the big surprise is that this is that this animal had ten arms. His research was published in Nature Communications. Making medical alarms less awful – and maybe saving lives Hospitals can be pretty noisy places. Medical devices, in particular, make quite a racket. And while their alarms are essential, perhaps they don't have to be so unpleasant. Michael Schutz, a professor of music cognition at McMaster University, believes that we can use what we know about music to improve the sonic environment in hospitals – and maybe save lives in the process. Fear of predation all by itself can reduce the survival rate of songbirds Liana Zannette, a biology professor from Western University in London, Ontario has found that just being aware of predators, even without actually being preyed upon, can reduce the reproductive rate of songbirds, and reduce the survival rate of those offspring they do have by as much as 53 percent. The most obvious impact is that birds living in fear do not eat. Her research was published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
