We often think of snoring as annoying or embarrassing, but we don’t usually think of it as deadly. However, it can be a symptom of sleep apnea, an involuntary cessation of breathing that occurs while the patient is asleep. Left untreated, sleep apnea can have serious and life-shortening consequences: high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, automobile accidents caused by falling asleep at the wheel, diabetes, and depression.. The University of Wisconsin found over an 18-year period, people with severe, untreated sleep apnea died a rate more than three times that of those without apnea. The American Sleep Apnea Association describes three types of sleep apnea: obstructive, central and mixed. Obstructive sleep apnea is caused by a blockage of the airway, usually when the soft tissue in the rear of the throat collapses and closes during sleep. Today we're talking to ASAA's Chief Patient officer, Adam Amdur.Adam is an “innovative patient advocate”. He was diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in 2008, more than thirty years after he first showed symptoms. As he struggled to learn how to manage his treatment, he was able to successfully identify and get treatment for his then two-year-old daughter and wife as well as many others. He joined the ASAA in 2012, leading the association’s evolution from a twenty-five-year-old physician-run organization into an entrepreneurial, patient-driven, public-health advocacy association. This interview was recorded at the AWAKETogether Summit in San Francisco, September 19, 2019.If you have questions or comments about this (or any episode) we'd like to hear from you. Do you remember the last time you woke up during the work week without an alarm clock? When you didn’t need caffeine to get going? If you can’t, you’re certainly not alone. Most of us fall short of the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep nightly and an estimated 50 million to 70 million Americans of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds suffer from sleep-related problems, according to the American Sleep Apnea Association. Our guest, Robin Haight, PsyD, a clinical psychologist in private practice, will give practical tips for getting a good night’s sleep and explain how common mental health disorders can interfere with our much-needed shut-eye.

The American Sleep Apnea Association was founded in 1990 with a goal to administer and nurture a new model of sleep apnea peer support groups. Adam Amdur has been the Chief Patient Officer since 2014 and in a wide ranging conversation we talk about the work of the ASAA, dispel some of the myths and misperceptions about sleep apnea, and discover how patients can find help and support from the ASAA. This episode's guest: Adam Amdur is the Chief Patient Officer of the American Sleep Apnea Association. He was diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea in 2008, more than thirty years after he first showed symptoms. As the first patient principal investigator and co-founder of the Sleep Apnea Patient-Centered Outcomes Network, a part of the National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network, Adam worked to bring together patient leaders from other networks in order to discover a common patient voice as it relates to research best practices and collaboration with diverse stakeholders. Sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, have become a significant health issue in the United States. It is estimated that 22 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea, with 80 percent of the cases of moderate and severe obstructive sleep apnea undiagnosed. Obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA when left untreated can lead a multitude of health disorders. Joining me today to talk about sleep apnea is Adam Amdur. Mr Amdur is the Chief Patient Officer of the American Sleep Apnea Association.
