Na een epische battle tussen LtD en Hoogerland op de Col de Granon, die verdacht veel leek op die tussen Carapaz en Kuss vandaag, was het weer tijd voor een nabeschouwing. Vanavond bonte avond, want het is Johnny z'n laatste soir in Villa Tour. Etappe 20 zit erop en we stevenen alweer af op de laatste rit van de Tour. Waar hebben we vandaag naar zitten kijken? In ieder geval een fenomenale Pedersen die zichzelf de geschiedenisboeken in rijdt, en een gek moment met de gele truidrager op kop in de rol als knecht, en een fantastische battle tussen Kuss en Carapaz. En, helaas, veel valpartijen, waarvan die van Kuss de hele wielerwereld even stil maakte. Tot slot passeren alle truien nog even de revue. En nog veel, veel meer. Et si Carapaz l'a emportée haut la main et s'est assuré le maillot à pois, les yeux étaient rivés sur la lutte pour le podium. Avec 24sec d'écart à combler sur son rival mexicain, Paul Seixas était attendu. Mais le jeune français a coincé dans l'ascension du Sarenne, alors que Del Toro pouvait compter sur Pogacar pour l'emmener au sommet, et conforter sa 3e place, derrière Evenepoel. Un Tour de France pour autant réussi pour le leader de la Décathlon-CMA CGM, qui s'adjuge la 4e place à seulement 19 ans, pour le premier Grand Tour de sa vie. Pour cette 18ème étape, Richard Carapaz a remporté sa deuxième victoire sur le Tour de France à Orcières-Merlette. L'Équatorien de 33 ans, de l'équipe EF Education-Easy First, sans victoire depuis plus d'un an, s'impose devant Mauro Schmid et Matteo Jorgenson. Issu de l'échappée, Richard Carapaz a faussé compagnie à Valentin Paret-Peintre dans la dernière ascension. Le Français garde toujours le maillot à poids destiné à Tadej Pogacar pour le moment. Chez les leaders, il n'y a pas eu de bataille. Tout le monde se préserve pour les deux grosses étapes à venir, et notamment l'équipe UAE où la moitié des coureurs est en méforme. C'est parti pour l'After Tour avec Pierre-Yves Leroux, Christophe Cessieux, Jérôme Coppel, Jérôme Pineau et Richard Virenque.

Pour cette 17ème étape entre Chambéry et Voiron, les sprinteurs avaient une dernière occasion de s'exprimer au sprint avant les Champs-Elysées. Après plus de 170km, c'est bien Jasper Philipsen qui s'impose en force, enfin, après avoir été déposé parfaitement par son coéquipier de luxe Mathieu van der Poel. Enfin une victoire pour le Belge depuis le début du Tour de France. Un soulagement dans l'équipe Alpecin. Philipsen peut encore rêver du maillot vert et devra livrer bataille à Paris avec Perdersen. Stage 16 of the 2026 Tour de France brought the race's only individual time trial: 26.1km from Évian-les-Bains to Thonon-les-Bains, featuring a punchy parcours with 500 metres of climbing that suited the all-rounders far more than the pure specialists. Remco Evenepoel reminded everyone why he is one of the greatest time triallists of his generation, storming to victory on Belgium's National Day to claim his 26th career TT win. Tadej Pogačar limited his losses superbly to finish second, while Mattias Skjelmose produced an excellent ride for third. Paul Seixas continued his remarkable Tour with fourth, narrowly ahead of Isaac Del Toro as the battle for the white jersey edged even closer. The overall classification remains largely unchanged. Pogačar still holds a commanding lead, while Evenepoel strengthened his grip on second place, with Jonas Vingegaard now out of the race after the crash on Stage 15. Behind them, however, the fight for the final podium position between Del Toro and Seixas is becoming one of the defining battles of this Tour. The biggest moment of the day came when Florian Lipowitz crashed heavily midway through his ride, forcing him to abandon the race. His exit reshapes the top 10, promotes a host of riders up the standings, and opens the door for Yannis Voisard to move into the overall top 10. We also discuss why this wasn't a course designed for pure time trial specialists. Filippo Ganna and Josh Tarling delivered the performances many expected, but on a climbing-heavy route, they were never likely to challenge for victory against riders like Evenepoel and Pogačar. And we caught up with Pete Kennaugh at the XDS-Astana team hotel on the rest day to hear his thoughts on how the race has unfolded so far, and we tackle the burning question: Was Jonas Vingegaard's crash a result of the doping test that woke him up in the middle of the night? On a assisté à une très grande étape pour cette 14e journée de course ! Malgré la 4e victoire de Pogacar, c'est plutôt la course de Paul Seixas qui nous interpellés. Le Français de la Décathlon-CMA CGM termine 3e derrière Del Toro, au terme d'un grand numéro. Le jeune prodige s'empare ainsi du maillot blanc, et pointe à la 4e place du classement général, derrière Pogacar solide leader, Vingegaard et Evenepoel... rien que ça ! La plus longue étape du Tour : 205 kilomètres entre Dole et Belfort, un Ballon d'Alsace placé suffisamment loin de l'arrivée pour semer le doute… et finalement, ce sont les baroudeurs qui ont eu le dernier mot. Mauro Schmid s'impose au terme d'un sprint avec Harold Tejada, pendant que les favoris du classement général se sont surtout observés à la veille d'un week-end décisif dans les Vosges. "We haven't got any chance…" Hinault added in the same interview. Kevin Vauquelin's plucky seventh place on GC notwithstanding, it seemed unfathomable after three weeks that the drought wouldn't extend to forty-one years in 2026, forty-two and so on at least until Tadej Pogačar either began an inexorable slide or retired.Unfathomable is also the adjective many long-in-the-tooth observers would use for the eventuality of Paul Seixas winning the 2026 race at age 19. It would certainly be historic, not only because Seixas would bring the Tour "home" for the first time since Hinault in 1985, but also because he would be the youngest ever winner: to be precise, 49 days younger than Henri Cornet in the Tour's second edition, way back in 1904.Improbable it certainly sounds, and logic would suggest the same — and yet this summer France expects. Hopes. To a certain extent believes. And will certainly get extremely excited if, even after the first skirmishes with the Pyrenees in week one, the boy from Beaujolais has not been Pogcinerated out of contention.Having witnessed Seixas's definitive coming of age at the Tour of the Basque Country in April, over three weeks in July, Daniel Friebe will take up potentially the story of the summer at the Tour de France.
