While we like to think our financial decisions are based on logic, the truth is, they are largely driven by emotion. So when John Maynard Keynes looked for methods to measure economic fluctuations, animal spirits were a key ingredient. Karthik Sastry is a macroeconomist and assistant professor at Princeton University. In this podcast, he says personal instincts and primal urges are known to cause cycles of boom and bust, and one way to gauge those emotions is through economic narratives. Sastry is coauthor with Joel Flynn of How Animal Spirits Affect the Economy published in Finance and Development magazine. Transcript: https://bit.ly/43HkuoB Read the article at IMF.org/fandd

In this video, the authors of The Battle for Consciousness Theory discuss the major contributions that Swami Vivekananda and Sri Aurobindo made to the global consciousness movement in the 21st century. Highlighting how the two stalwart gurus introduced to the West the uniquely dharmic philosophy of evolution, the authors Rajiv Malhotra and Manogna Sastry discuss how the institutions which were founded to propagate the works of these two luminaries failed to defend their gurus' works from being appropriated and distorted. They highlight how the book Battle for Consciousness Theory defends Sri Aurobindo's seminal models in individual and collective consciousness from Ken Wilber's co-opting and discuss the larger issues of digestion currently dominating Indology.Battle For Consciousness Theory : battleforconsciousnesstheory.comSnakes in the Ganga - http://www.snakesintheganga.comVarna Jati Caste - http://www.varnajaticaste.comThe Battle For IIT's - http://www.battleforiits.comPower of future Machines - http://www.poweroffuturemachines.com10 heads of Ravana - http://www.tenheadsofravana.comTo support Infinity Foundation's projects including the continuation of such episodes and the research we do:इनफिनिटी फ़ौंडेशन की परियोजनाओं को अनुदान देने के लिए व इस प्रकार के एपिसोड और हमारे द्वारा किये जाने वाले शोध को जारी रखने के लिए: http://infinityfoundation.com/donate-2

In 2008, the world economic system was rocked by a financial crisis that stemmed from risky mortgages being securitized and sold as safe investments to unknowing investors. Misaligned incentives, unpriced risk, deceptive selling practices, and a lack of regulatory scrutiny throughout the financial industry led to the Great Recession, the consequences of which we're still feeling in a variety of ways today. While somewhat different from what preceded the 2008 financial crisis, there are clear parallels with what's happening in the home insurance and mortgage markets in areas most at risk to damage from climate-worsened storms. As large, traditional insurance companies are leaving states like Florida, California, and Louisiana because the damages from hurricanes, floods, and wildfires have become too large, new insurance companies are replacing them. These companies are smaller, less diverse, and rely on a ratings agency known to provide good ratings to underserving companies. Unsurprisingly, when climate catastrophes hit, these insurers often go bankrupt, leaving home owners and their banks with a destroyed home and asset without the funds to rebuild or even repair. And the implications of this aren't isolated to the local level, because most of these mortgages are securitized and sold at the national level. This week, Prof. Pari Sastry joins the show to discuss her recent paper "When Insurers Exit: Climate Losses, Fragile Insurers, and Mortgage Markets". This paper explains how the home home mortgage, insurance markets, and global economy are interconnected and how the climate crisis is impacting all three. As the world is still recovering from the 2008 financial crisis, it's shocking to see the early stages of what appears to be some of the same causes play out today. And we know that the climate crisis is only going to increase the number of severe weather events, which will put an even greater strain on insurance and mortgage companies, further worsening an already fragile relationship. Prof. Pari Sastry is an Assistant Professor of Finance at Columbia Business School where she focuses her research on climate finance. Subhodeep Mukhopadhyay and Manogna Sastry explicate the key themes of Audrey Truschke's work in the book 'Ten Heads of Ravana.' research. Truschke's positions on Hinduism and Hindutva, her whitewashing of the temple destructions that took place under Aurangzeb's rule, her blatant misrepresentations of incidents from the Rāmāyaṇa through mistranslations and other important aspects are studied through a careful analysis of her writings. Mukhopadhyay and Sastry show how Truschke's work is riddled with poor data and sloppy Snakes in the Ganga - http://www.snakesintheganga.com Varna Jati Caste - http://www.varnajaticaste.com The Battle For IIT's - http://www.battleforiits.com Power of future Machines - http://www.poweroffuturemachines.com 10 heads of Ravana - http://www.tenheadsofravana.com To support Infinity Foundation's projects including the continuation of such episodes and the research we do: इनफिनिटी फ़ौंडेशन की परियोजनाओं को अनुदान देने के लिए व इस प्रकार के एपिसोड और हमारे द्वारा किये जाने वाले शोध को जारी रखने के लिए: http://infinityfoundation.com/donate-2/ --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rajivmalhotrapodcast/support
Irfan Habib, the Marxist scholar from Aligarh Muslim University, is the subject of Manogna Sastry's essay in the book 'Ten Heads of Ravana.' Habib has the distinction of being amongst the most vocal and unrelenting voices opposing the archaeological results of the excavations at Ayodhya against the backdrop of the dispute for the land demolished at the erstwhile Babri Masjid. Sastry analyzes his notorious role as a witness and ‘expert' in the Ram Janmabhoomi issue at Ayodhya, as well as his and his coterie's hold over the country's premier historical research institutes and universities. Sastry's lucid essay highlights several such points and key observations on a range of issues, drawing from original readings of Habib's works and others. She traces the significant contributions of Irfan Habib to the disfiguring of Indian history and his role in creating a hegemony in academic institutions that perpetuate divisive and false historical accounts. Michael Witzel is an important scholar discussed in the book 'Ten Heads of Ravana' and Manogna Sastry analyzes his work in her cogent essay. Sastry discusses one of the major themes of Witzel's academic work, consisting of his championing the Aryan Invasion/Migration into India theories, to the point of disregarding evidence and denigrating through ad hominem attacks, the works which challenge and have negated several of his central points. His proof and methodology have included “creating” evidence when none exists, through mistranslations and grammatical errors, to the point of distorting verses to suit his whims. When his claims have been discredited by others, Witzel has gone on to offer farcical explanations, even as the lack of academic ethics in his work stands tall. The essay highlights how such, instances demonstrate the poor scholarship that accompanies Witzel's work in a theme as crucial as the Aryan issue, for it has direct implications on the temporal and spatial origins of the Vedas and Sanskrit heritage. Witzel has been a vociferous critic of Indians wherever they are fighting for a fair and just representation of their history. He played a role, along with Marxist historians such as Romila Thapar, in trying to thwart the attempts made by Hindus in North America to correct the history textbooks of Grade VI taught in California Public Schools. Witzel's writings, laden under the garb of trying to protect “historical accuracy”, lays bare much of what is fallacious about his scholarship. The essay considers several such instances of Witzel's work to demonstrate why his work qualifies him as one of today's Intellectual Ravanas. Romila Thapar has been one of India's foremost historians, having held control of premier national educational and research institutions to influence academic discourse and government policies over decades. Anurag Sharma, in his brilliant essay, refutes Thapar's historiographical assumptions by providing strong counterexamples from Indian history. In the first section, he critically examines her views on the Islamic period of Indian history; in the second, her theories related to Hindu Dharma and the sacred texts such as Ramayana, Mahabharata and the Puranas; and in the third, her views on India as a nation and Hindu nationalism. Using evidence from fields of numismatics, archaeology, epigraphy, art and traditional texts to debunk many of the claims, Sharma makes a compelling case as to why Thapar's work is unreliable and cannot be assumed as the mainstream narrative if we wish to return to scientific, objective and fact-based representations of history. The youth are truly leading the climate discussion. From Fridays for Future, that's led by Greta Thunberg to The Sunrise Movement, a youth-led political action organization focused on stopping climate change. It's no doubt that Gen Z is fully invested in taking action in the fight against climate change. As a tired millennial, it's truly inspiring to see such vigor in today's youth as they challenge politicians and corporations, holding them accountable for the harm that they've done to the planet. And in addition to that, Gen Z has also made great strides in bringing awareness to environmental and social injustices that have been tolerated for way too long. In this episode, we're chatting with a college student who is inspiring her generation to get involved in climate action. Today's featured sustainable brown girl is Anya Sastry, a climate activist, filmmaker, and student. She produced a documentary titled Frontliners that highlights environmental injustice from the perspective of the less privileged. Anya is also the National Outreach Director for the US Youth Climate Strike and a contributor to the book United We Are Unstoppable: 60 Inspiring Young People Saving Our World by Akshat Rathi. In this episode, we talk about: - Anya's role as National Outreach Director for the US Youth Climate Strike - How young people can get involved with climate justice work - Anya's film, Frontliners. and its exploration of the impacts of environmental injustice on marginalized communities Watch Frontliners: http://anyasastry.com/frontliners/ Follow Anya on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/anyasastry/ Watch this video interview on YouTube: https://youtu.be/P_EwuyNxwaE Donate to Sustainable Brown Girl on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/sustainablebrowngirl Visit the Sustainable Brown Girl Website: https://www.sustainablebrowngirl.com/ Follow Sustainable Brown Girl on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sustainablebrowngirl/ Please leave a review on Apple Podcasts!
Teledentistry Support Organizations in Modern DentistryToday we are joined by Dr. Vilas Sastry of Teledentistry.com to discuss Teledentistry in modern dental practices and much more! Thank you for taking the time to read about me. I have been in the dental industry for over 20 years and have had the privilege of helping thousands of patients.Through my experiences with them, I have been able to find solutions to several of their issues ranging from actual dental care needs to the more complex financial and technological barriers that we must all navigate as health care providers. From 2006-2017, as Chief Executive Officer of Aces Dental, I led a team of dentists to provide real world dental services in the Las Vegas area. Concurrently from 2007-2016 as CEO of Health Networks of America, I grew a dental insurance brokerage firm from scratch to a multimillion-dollar operation spanning over 3000 dental offices nationwide. I have gained industry insight from both the dental practitioner's perspective and that of the insurance companies I worked with. This has allowed me to create solutions that help dental practices, dental insurance, and most importantly the patients we serve. Today as CEO of Teledentistry.com, these previous experiences have led to the creation of a unique business model that bridges decades of experience in patient care, dentistry, technology and insurance. Gabrielle Ruiz & Pallavi Sastry are two women on a mission to spotlight platonic love in a socially distanced world. Last year, these two best friends started the popular podcast What Are Friends For to create a space to have meaningful and sometimes uncomfortable conversations about friendships. They've interviewed incredible guests such as Brittany Snow, Javier Munoz, Rachel Bloom and Kate Flannery and they're kicking off Season 3 continuing to ask the question, “What are friends for?" These ladies open up about their friendship journey, Galentine's Day, and they get juicy as we uncover some things they did NOT know about each other!
