It's a double whammy for our latest episode of the Playable Futures Podcast, with gaming communities at the centre of the discussion. For this episode, presenter Will Freeman chats to Mark Reed, Founder of Heaven Media to reflect on gaming's relationship with marketing and the important role that communities play in shaping its landscape. He then interviews Romain de Waubert de Genlis, Studio Head and Chief Creative Officer at Amplitude Studios who discusses how his platform Games2Gether aims to bring the gaming community into the dev process. Both spokespeople take a long view on the importance of community, but what becomes clear is that factoring community into marketing strategies (amongst other project milestones) early in a campaign can prove pivotal in its success – and in many ways it always has been – but as we look to the future it will be an important key to success.  As Mark Reed says: “For as long as I've been gaming, communities have always been at the heart of gaming and that's still very true today.” Having witnessed significant changes over the course of a lengthy career, Mark reflects on how studios, publishers and developers have had to adapt to put their players and, crucially, engagement with them, first. Reflecting on the '90s, when the majors ignored their player base until launch, Mark suggests that the industry has now begun to accommodate them as early as possible. After all, if publishers don't nurture their audience, they stand a chance of falling at the first hurdle. If communities are key to successful games marketing, what is their future with regards to the creation and making of new and exciting titles?   Romain, meanwhile, is co-founder and Creative Director of Games2Gether, a video game co-creation platform that brings the gaming community together and provides a platform for creators to swap ideas and collaborate on development. This further democratisation of the creative process puts budding developers first, enabling creators to swap ideas in a like-minded environment with no gatekeepers. “What people usually don't like when they try to interact with a team is they will feel that they're not being listened to… We have one million players, so it's hard to tell everyone to listen to everyone at any one time, but it's all about transparency.” And what Romain touches on here is something that is true when applied to gaming communities, dev communities and is a core principle of good games marketing to boot – with clarity, simplicity and openness the sector can maintain new and powerful channels of conversation and use the benefits thereof to build the games industry of the future.  The Playable Futures Podcast accompanies Playable Futures, a collection of insights, interviews and articles from global games leaders sharing their visions of where the industry and medium will go next. A series of ten articles so far have been published on GamesIndustry.biz, with more planned. Playable Futures is a collaborative project brought to you in partnership with GI.biz, UKIE and Diva.

This 4Xchange podcast thing is already seeing a total revamp of its format. Instead of just news, each week we'll have a topic that we dive deep in to. First up, the boys discuss how'd they'd create the perfect 4X and soon realize how in over their heads they truly are. Recent 4X news items: Stellaris Federations is out. Met with mostly favorable reviews on Steam. Our review was unfortunately taken down due to plagiarism. Imperiums: Greek Wars looking for beta testers. Inquire within. We featured the first-ever look at Godking: Master of the Rituals gameplay. It appears to take some influence from both Master of Magic and the Dominions series and is pretty darn promising. Thea 2: The Shattering received update Build 0657, which added a bunch of new content and fixes. Amplitude Studios showed off Humankind's territory claiming system in this video. Dominions 5 received a huge update in the form of version 5.4.1, which among many, many other things, added a new nation, new heroes, new rituals, new units, new…everything! Check it out here! What mechanics would we steal from other 4X games to make the “one great 4X”? Endless Legend's faction asymmetry? Colonization's end game? Alpha Centauri's setting? Ascendancy's racial active abilities? Sword of the Stars' different stardrives or its random tech tree? Distant Worlds' scale? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/explorminate/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/explorminate/support

Amplitude Studios a donné naissance à « Endless Space ». Darkness. Emptiness. Silence. Only dim and distant lights, providing no heat and only scant illumination to an otherwise cold and barren expanse. Is this episode about: a) Your wallet after record release day b) Outer space c) Why not both? Welcome back, star voyager, as we bring you the warmth and music of another Video Game Grooves episode! This time we are joined by Mohammed Taher of Brave Wave Productions for an exciting episode about spaaaaace! We begin with the 2018 Data Discs release of Policenauts, one of the early oeuvres of Hideo Kojima. The fairly-uncredited music captures the buddy-cop genre with a jazz backdrop to keep you pointin' and clickin' and investigatin' space cases, and we discuss our own musical maturity.  Next, we let Mohammed off the hook as we explore the 4X musical genre in Endless Space 2, released by G4F. We learn to let music breathe a bit as the FlyByNo score walks the line between melodic and ambient, and Mo makes his love known for the Amplitude Studios series, and mmmmaybe even sneaks in an extra feature track! ;) We cover the news and new releases, which aren't too taxing this time around, but a few interesting finds will keep your turntable busy for a long time to come. Finally we discuss your community answers to the question "What bonanzas have you found 'in the wild?'" A few of you have gotten verrry lucky and we are so jealous. Mohammed teases us with an exclusive announcement or two, and we rocket off for reaches unknown (and our next episode)! Outro: "No! No! This week Rob and Fraser welcome special guest Jeff Spock, Narrative Director at Amplitude Studios. The Endless Series has garnered a large amount of praise with its impressive debut in Endless Space, the unique gameplay in Dungeons of the Endless, and the master class of 4X gaming in Endless Legend. Jeff goes over the challenges of writing for 4X and strategy games and how the universe has changed from Endless Space to Endless Legend. Endless Legend has changed quite a bit since launch and Jeff explains how the series has evolved and where it might go in Endless Space 2. This topic was chosen in a poll by our Patreon backers.

This week, we peer very critically at Firaxis' so-called sequel to Civilization V and its expansion, Brave New World, the much-hyped 'successor', 2014's Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth. Beyond Earth was promised as not only a sci-fi successor to the mainline Civ series but also as a spiritual successor to 1999's Alpha Centauri, a promise that we have some pretty damning beliefs about. From my humble origins pecking around Beyond Earth, it immediately became clear that something else would be necessary for my full step forward in the 4X sphere, and Rock, Paper, Shotgun's GoTY '14 awards happened to make it very clear just where that fix might be, a potential diamond in the rough from indie developer Amplitude Studios, a tiny ex-Ubisoft Parisian team working one indie darling after another through the Unity framework, and tying together all of their games' lore no less. That gem is indeed late 2014's Endless Legend, released just one month prior to Beyond Earth to quiet rave acclaim, and its subsequent minor add-on, Guardians in 2015. From the moment I first loaded up EL, it was clear these two games were meant to be contrasted, from their combat to their tech trees to their soundtracks, and that's exactly what we're here today to do; in a somewhat messy and mildly unorganized fashion, we sit down and talk about exactly what makes these two games. You'll benefit most from a passing knowledge of the Civilization series, but it isn't required, and knowledge of Endless Legend is absolutely not required whatsoever - it is new, after all!
