Jump to Arcs | Season 1 Open Datalinks. Subject: Honest Assessment of Earth in 2100. Result: The few billion people and perhaps half as many kind souls don't agree on much, but they do agree that Earth is ruined. The environment. The politics. The war. The Mistake. Sure, there are pockets where things are mostly okay, if you've got the credits. But you know it's gotten real bad when even the rich people want to leave. Of course, with everything so fractured, no one person or state was rich enough nor smart enough to figure out how to get away on their own. So despite all of humanity's failures, we came together for one last job. Mars is a fool's errand; we shoot for the stars! FTL is a myth. We designed cryosleep pods to last us the 100 year journey at 5% the speed of light. We took what readings we could remotely. The new planet seems to be habitable, but we're bringing extra resource pods to be safe. Who knows, maybe one day the colonists will be able to come back and fix Earth. Or heck, maybe we can learn from this project to fix our own house rather than ruining someone else's. What's more likely, though, is that humans never change, and they ruin the new planet before too long. Copy Editor Syd Meijer (under pseudonym, Dequiem), Don't Let The Door Hit You Open Datalinks. Subject: Informational Brochure on Habitable Alpha Centauri Planet. Result: Earth is the past, but Alpha Centauri holds the future! Be one of the select 100,000 colonists to a new world! Relax in our patented Peaceful Cryosleep™ pods and wake up to a planet of limitless possibilities! But it's a one-way trip, and cellular service is limited! Remote lifescans, however, show a pristine planet brimming with flora, fauna, fungi, and fun! Perhaps you'd like to generously help fund the project, and thereby secure your place as a founding colonist. Or are you a driven scientist? Then there may be room for you in the Academy or Biogenetics modules. We want the best in many disciplines. There are many ways to join and contribute to Humanity's greatest achievement! Competitive positions are limited, so act now! Copy Editor Syd Meijer, Firaxis Marketing Brochure #3 Setup Welcome to the newest campaign by Dicey Stories! Alpha Centauri: Chronicles of Chiron takes place in a sci-fi setting exploring humanity's attempt to escape Earth's problems on a new planet. While the focus is on our two PCs, the overall story is also at times political. Where my StarCraft campaign was more on the sillier side, I'm trying to grow as a GM by running a more narratively-driven dramatic campaign. Some concepts we address head-on are finding a place to belong, duty versus obligation, the environmental impact of human expansion, cycles of wealth inequality, and revenge. Alpha Centauri: Chronicles of Chiron is played using the Genesys roleplaying system now published by Edge Studio. We also occasionally reference the Mythic Game Master Emulator's event meaning tables for inspiration. The release of each episode's audio will be accompanied by a serialized, narrative write-up of the adventure. This time, they will primarily be written first-person from the point of view of one of the PCs. Background Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri and its expansion, Alien Crossfire, are the most direct inspirations for this campaign, but we also draw on elements of the more recent Civilization: Beyond Earth. If you know nothing about these, that's fine! Neither did the players prior to starting this campaign. I enjoyed both video games, the story more in the former and the gameplay in the latter. But they both have a wondrous mix of flora, fauna,
Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we insert a bonus interview into the middle of our series on GoldenEye 007. We speak with Grant Kirkhope, one of two composers on the title. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Podcast breakdown: 0:58 Interview 1:03:57 Break 1:04:32 Outro Issues covered: starting at Rare in '95, composing in hex, the imposing approach to programming, fitting in 1 Mb, making a clarinet from one note, limiting your palette, looping your cymbal decay, working within your limits, downsampling from 44.1 kKz and using the EQ, working from good tunes rather than a huge palette, getting a degree in trumpet and living the musician life, the dole and mom's house, sending in casette tapes, having a meg of memory to play with, going to Disneyland, a farm in the middle of nowhere with teams in stables, a family affair, GameBoy in the morning and GoldenEye in the afternoon, limiting who could be in what building, a culture of friendly rivalry, taking ideas and building on them, brilliant bosses, being into the Bond films, the best film releases of every year, not knowing what you're doing, working on the multiplayer in secret, "not pleasing anyone a lot but pleasing a lot of people a little bit" these days, coming up with the idea in the morning and doing it in the afternoon, the indie spirit, small teams, making the engine you need and no extraneous bits, building games like Nintendo, working from two or three sentences, how does this thing sound (spiky things vs forest things), messing around until you hear what you like, instinctual, developing from an emotional sense, delving into Statue Park, trying to find the John Barry magic, being afraid you're going to get fired and instead moving on to another project, getting a chance to film all the sets, having the magic destroyed, a game that just kept selling and selling, the godfather of trap music, pause music becoming the soundtrack of the game, falling into games without training, music living on when the games don't necessarily, things that get into your head as a child, remembering what you've done, making someone's favorite game, having quite a journey, games as not a destination for composers, having a scene. Civilization Beyond Earth was released back in 2014 as an "in-between" game between Civilization V and Civilization VI. When it first came out, people were thrown off about the game not being a historical 4x despite it having the "Civilization" branding; with many agreeing that it, "Just didn't feel like Civ." Last Sunday, Zo and Moy recently tried Beyond Earth and were genuinely surprised at how much fun they had with the game. Beyond Earth implements many systems that make this game standout as a unique game of Civilization that make sense when you're the one colonizing an unknown planet. Things like quests, affinity systems, and the dreaded "Pain in Miasma". --- PATREON SHOUTOUTS Thank you to all the Warlord and higher patrons! Civilization(R): Beyond Earth(TM) had a bumpy start. Despite Firaxis's's...s attempts to distance Beyond Earth the from the venerable Alpha Centauri, the game was inevitably compared to the genre favorite and found to be wanting. A new expansion is here and special guest Martin Glaude - best known for his Let's Play videos on Youtube as quill18 - joins Rob and Troy "There's Always Money in the Banana Stand" Goodfellow to discuss the latest addition to the Civilization franchise.

This week, we peer very critically at Firaxis' so-called sequel to Civilization V and its expansion, Brave New World, the much-hyped 'successor', 2014's Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth. Beyond Earth was promised as not only a sci-fi successor to the mainline Civ series but also as a spiritual successor to 1999's Alpha Centauri, a promise that we have some pretty damning beliefs about. From my humble origins pecking around Beyond Earth, it immediately became clear that something else would be necessary for my full step forward in the 4X sphere, and Rock, Paper, Shotgun's GoTY '14 awards happened to make it very clear just where that fix might be, a potential diamond in the rough from indie developer Amplitude Studios, a tiny ex-Ubisoft Parisian team working one indie darling after another through the Unity framework, and tying together all of their games' lore no less. That gem is indeed late 2014's Endless Legend, released just one month prior to Beyond Earth to quiet rave acclaim, and its subsequent minor add-on, Guardians in 2015. From the moment I first loaded up EL, it was clear these two games were meant to be contrasted, from their combat to their tech trees to their soundtracks, and that's exactly what we're here today to do; in a somewhat messy and mildly unorganized fashion, we sit down and talk about exactly what makes these two games. You'll benefit most from a passing knowledge of the Civilization series, but it isn't required, and knowledge of Endless Legend is absolutely not required whatsoever - it is new, after all! This week on The Free Cheese Podcast: Joe, Kyle, Marc, and newcomer Troy sit down to recap last week's Nintendo Direct after we lost part of our recording from episode 104. We discuss the death of Club Nintendo and share our hopes for what replaces it. We talk about the disappointment of Civilization: Beyond Earth and the fun of Nidhogg. We give some early impressions on the new EarthBound-inspired RPG Citizens of Earth and cave in to an uncaring Nintendo of America to enjoy Mother 3 on our own terms. Finally, we discuss the state of Pokemon and what we would do to fix the game and make it more palpable for those of us who have grown tired of the formula.
We love Christopher Walken as Captain Hook. He's so bad. After a long holiday away from the microphones the NFR team rings in the new year with a milestone episode that will simultaneously delight and frighten all those who hear it. For New Business, Donald opens with hardware impressions as he picked up a 2DS and can't wait for the XL to return, before completely misinterpreting a Kenny Rogers song (it's "condition", not situation) and talking about the obscene deal he got on Akiba's Trip (Vita). Stephen's New Business falls on the disappointing end for the rest of the team, as he discusses Vita Game of the Year in an absolutely insane universe Child of Light, before being somewhat disappointed in Civilization: Beyond Earth. Austen's main events feature Voltorb pinball (Pokemon Pinball Ruby/Sapphire) and, apropos of the feature, dealt with some wizard action with Frozenbyte's Trine series. Now Posted is back, and there was much rejoicing. Whatcha Watchin' gets off to a bit of a weird start, as Donald completely forgets the purpose of the segment, but Serial is a good enough excuse for it. Following that it's a long anime block as Donald also started Cowboy Bebop for the first time ever before handing the torch over to Stephen for the Bebop team's next work, Eureka Seven. After that, Stephen sits back and spins us all a wondrous Fairy Tale. Austen has some anime of his own - Patema Inverted, Haibane Renmei, and Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet. And even with those titles, he managed to find something weirder. For the Feature, in honor of the 25th anniversary of both its theatrical release and the release of the thing it was created specifically to promote... as promised, we all watched The Wizard. Come hear us wax rhapsodic on the movie once guaranteed to never appear on Box Office Poison under threat of stabby, and see who is actually positive about the movie. Finally, the Mushrooms get a little out of order as the crew tries to make sense of Sony's insane pricing for everything and Ubi's continued inability to do QA. At the end of the show, we guessed right that Iwata would cash In the Please Understand contract, so that's going to be part of Episode 51. Anything else we should include? Email us (nintendofreeradio@gmail.com), tweet @NFRPodcast or drop it below. Until next time, bow at Stephen getting 50k in Double Dragon. It is 2015, people, and time we said goodbye to the wreck of a year that was 2014. In this episode, we talk up all the trends and games that had us talking over the past twelve months. We've got GOTY lists from all four members present, and in the second half we go over some of the big trends of the year, from gamergate to early access to comedy to--what else--goats! As a preview, here are just a few of the games we talk about this episode: Twitch Plays Pokemon, 80 Days, Nidhogg, Civilization: Beyond Earth, Super Smash Bros., Tomodachi Life, and a crap-ton more that we don't want to spoil here. Sit back, relax, and get ready to recall just how "meh" 2014 was! ALTERNATE EPISODE TITLE: Christopher's Dream Music: "Intro" by Slime Girls, "Bipp" by Sophie, "Billboard" by S-Type

It was an honor interviewing legendary composer Grant Kirkhope about his time at Rare, where he worked on some of the most popular video game soundtracks of all time. In this episode of Composer Quest, Grant talks about composing within the very small limits of the Nintendo 64 cartridge, and he shares some stories behind the soundtracks to Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, GoldenEye 007, and Perfect Dark. We also talk about Grant’s more recent orchestral work for Kingdoms of Amalur and Civilization: Beyond Earth, and he shares his favorite chord progressions that keep coming back in his music.

I'm not gonna lie: this "pre-pilot" is pretty heavy. Its aim is to cover the entire industry, in its current state, platform by platform, element by element, inch by inch. By the end of it though, you should have a clear idea of where the video games industry stands at the moment, and the tools you need to understand where it might be going. Also, we're having fun while discussing all this. Sounds appealing? Great, jump in! We'll be back soon with what will probably more light hearted (but still super informative) shows. The games we mention on the show: PS3: Dark Souls, Uncharted series, Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare, Red Dead Redemption Xbox 360: Fable 2, Crackdown, Viva Pinata, Halo 3, Modern Warfare 1 & 2, Red Dead Redemption PS4: Uncharted, Blood Borne, Shadow of Mordor XBox One: Halo Master Chief Collection and 5, Forza series, Shadow of Mordor, Titanfall Wii U: All of Nintendo! 3DS: Nintendo again! Fantasy Life, Kid Icarus, Animal Crossing, Bravely Default PS Vita: Persona 4, Uncharted, Gravity Rush, Spelunky Mobile: XCom, Hearthstone, Skyforce, The Banner Saga, Valiant Heart, Final Fantasy PC: Everything! Portal 2, Civilization Beyond Earth, Papers Please, Diablo 3, Crusader Kings 2, Batman Arkham Asylum / City Hosts: Patrick Beja (@NotPatrick) Tom Merritt (@acedtect, The Daily Tech News Show site) Matt Lees (@Jam_sponge, his YouTube channel, Shut Up and Sit Down, Daft Souls) Umberto Moioli (@U_Moioli, Multiplayer.it) See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

And with Episode 23 (on Halloween, no less) we bring the month of horror to a close, in a way that only For All Intents and Purposes can. Week in Geek: Andrew played Civilization: Beyond Earth while Dan talks about his comic but also watched Shadow of the Vampire in honor of the Halloween episode. The Dead That Started It All: In celebration of the scariest month of the year, Dan and Andrew decided to sit down and watch the original 1968 George Romero classic, Night of the Living Dead, and they were really impressed for being the movie that basically established the genre. Love the Craft: Dan gave Andrew homework to read what he feels is one of Lovecraft's creepier stories, "The Thing on the Doorstep." Boasts of Bethel: The Boasts return with a rather serious contemplation of monsters both real and imaginary and how they seem to be much closer than we thought, given recent events among nerds and geeks. Question of the Week: Since Halloween is over, they leave the horror behind and, instead, jump onto another favorite topic of theirs. With DC and Marvel making all kinds of announcements all over the place, is there some superhero product (game, book, movie, music, etc.)––that doesn't necessarily have to do with the Big Two––that you feel deserves more attention? In der zweiten Hälfte animieren die Leserfragen das GA-Team wie gewohnt zur Abschweifung erster Güte. https://www.facebook.com/GamesAktuell

Au sommaire de ZQSD #14 : Battlefield Hardline, Civilization Beyond Earth, The Forest, Among the Sleep, Shovel Knight, Soldats Inconnus, et notre dossier E3 avec Kocobe en invité
E3 has truly begun! The convention doors have been thrown open wide and we’ve raided the halls of valuable information and hands-on experiences. We tried out Fable: Legends, Shape Up, Fantasia: Music Evolved, Disney Infinity Marvel Super Heroes, Apotheon, Broforce, and EarthNight. And we saw live demos of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Civilization: Beyond Earth, and TellTale’s Tales From The Borderlands. Day 1 also marked Nintendo’s E3 Digital Event, the last of the pre-show conferences, where The Big N announced but a few of the current projects they’re working on and a number of new games. It’s a tricky time for Nintendo. Can they survive on Mario Kart and Smash Bros. alone, or will some of their latest announcements like the Amiibo figurines and the new IP Splatoon or the TBD Zelda and Star Fox entries sustain them? We share our thoughts on Nintendo’s future and our reactions to the new games.Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
