There's shenanigans afoot this week and it only dawned on me while putting these notes together of the potentially top level criminal activities afoot in the UK games industry! In amongst the weekly dose of totally innocent fare we have two seemingly unconnected stories from Simon: Peter Molyneux's car breaks down... Then Simon gets his car carjacked... Come to your own conclusions, dear listeners!! If anyone actually bothers to read these notes then I might've been too scared to even mention this - or I'll just be asked to change these notes if we're skirting too close to legal issues. It wouldn't be the first time I've Said Too Much Aaaanyway, yes, in One Life Left this week we have S-T-E not going on a long flight and he's still not a lawyer but he does continue to update his (so far) OLL Exclusive Game Black Diamond (join our Discord to play!), there's an EA Steam stealth drop, March 10th day happened again, EU check out Apple's Epic issues, Warner Brothers can't be bothered and the future of console hardware is dead. Again. Maybe. And, yes, Simon gets his car carjacked "live" on air mere days after going to a posh UKIE dinner with the great and the good of the UK games industry! (Except Peter Molyneux...) Don't forget (unless this is the first time you've heard) that there's a Resonance FM Fundraising Maraoke Special at Loading Bar Peckham in That London this coming Friday 15th March! The latest episode of Playable Futures features a conversation with Deborah Mensah-Bonsu, who is the founder of dmb crew. Her flagship initiative is Games for Good, which focuses on helping studios and the wider industry harness games for social impact. Will and Deborah discuss the opportunity presented by the proliferation of games on mobile to unlock societal and behavioural change for good. “People are starting to understand that what it means to be a gamer is not what it was ten years ago,” Deborah says, adding later - “There is a potential for mobile to engage with people who didn't consider themselves gamers. Mobile is leading on that.” Whilst the discussion touches the familiar themes of mobile gaming such as monetisation - with Deborah saying that “it's not wrong to spend money on something that you think is bringing you value,” - and discoverability, the podcast equally focuses on the potential of the medium to effect change, with Deborah being optimistic about mobile as a platform for innovation and connection, with games offering tremendous potential to take us beyond the horizon of our ambition. Episode seven of the Playable Futures podcast turns its attention to the future of game consumption, and the shift in the dynamic between user, creator and platform. The result was a wide-ranging, insightful conversation between two brilliant guests – Stephanie King, Chief Administrative and Legal Officer and Playco, and Karol Severin, Senior analyst, VP of data, and Co-Founder at MIDiA Research. Both brought robust analysis and fascinating data – and a lot of vibrancy and infectious Through their conversation, what becomes clear is that today's gamers are bombarded with more choices than ever – and yet we all only have 24 hours in one day. The attention economy is a place of more movement than ever before. Publishers and developers will increasingly need to have agile tactics in order to take their games to players, rather than work to bring users to platforms. Their episode's conversation also covers themes that are commonly preoccupying the sector at the moment – saturation and discoverability, for example – but with a realistic and enthusiastic outlook on how things will develop in the future. King and Severin discuss games as collected shared experiences; games as identifiers for tribes; and escape versus connection. The latest of our Playable Futures series tackles the industry's foundational duo - Publisher and Developer - and looks at what the future holds for Publishing in a sector in which the rate of change is rapid and accelerating. It's also one in which the balance between Community, Audience, Developer and Publisher has shifted irrevocably. For Episode 5, presenter Will Freeman speaks to Jean-Paul Hardy, General Manager of Gearbox Amsterdam and Thomas Hegarty, Founder and Director of Roll7. Veterans of the publisher/developer relationship, the duo draw on their many years of experience in publishing and developing videogames and take a long view on what is in store for the future. Hardy reflects on how things have changed since he started out, when the publisher was responsible for a game's launch and little else. “When I started in the industry, you just launched and left. Print was king and if you had the budget you would do TV. Then all of a sudden online was the holy grail of marketing and publishing. I've seen 20 holy grails come by since then and these days it's all about data-driven things.” Today, as Hardy explains, publishing has evolved to encompass more than “simple” awareness. “It's so many things and it only gets bigger and bigger. If you don't limit yourself and focus on key areas, you're going to get spread so thin. You won't be able to do everything properly.” Hegarty reflects on how specialist, nuanced and important Marketing has become, as well as the value that a Publisher's perspective can bring. “As we've grown our ambition and our budgets grow, there's more risk attached to what we're doing. We can't just hope we've hit the right note. We've got to do the analysis and that's where working with a publisher has been really good. Interestingly, they settle on certain fundamentals that seem to characterise the publisher/developer relationship whatever the era: trust and open, frank communication. “The publisher still has that same love of gaming that a developer has,” Hardy states. “They just look at it in a different way because we have different expertise.” “Community is absolutely key. It always has been,” adds Hegarty, “There has been a big shift in the last couple of years where we actually see active changes within the game from people watching live on Twitch and that makes you think very differently about the game from the design point of view, which goes all the way through to how to release the game.” Are we looking at a future where the audience, developer, publisher and community become more interwoven? One thing is for sure - this episode leaves you thinking that the future is positive and exciting, and despite the inevitable challenges - good publisher / developer relations will provide plenty of solutions. The Playable Futures Podcast accompanies Playable Futures, a collection of insights, interviews and articles from global games leaders sharing their visions of where the industry and medium will go next. It's a double whammy for our latest episode of the Playable Futures Podcast, with gaming communities at the centre of the discussion. For this episode, presenter Will Freeman chats to Mark Reed, Founder of Heaven Media to reflect on gaming's relationship with marketing and the important role that communities play in shaping its landscape. He then interviews Romain de Waubert de Genlis, Studio Head and Chief Creative Officer at Amplitude Studios who discusses how his platform Games2Gether aims to bring the gaming community into the dev process. Both spokespeople take a long view on the importance of community, but what becomes clear is that factoring community into marketing strategies (amongst other project milestones) early in a campaign can prove pivotal in its success – and in many ways it always has been – but as we look to the future it will be an important key to success. As Mark Reed says: “For as long as I've been gaming, communities have always been at the heart of gaming and that's still very true today.” Having witnessed significant changes over the course of a lengthy career, Mark reflects on how studios, publishers and developers have had to adapt to put their players and, crucially, engagement with them, first. Reflecting on the '90s, when the majors ignored their player base until launch, Mark suggests that the industry has now begun to accommodate them as early as possible. After all, if publishers don't nurture their audience, they stand a chance of falling at the first hurdle. If communities are key to successful games marketing, what is their future with regards to the creation and making of new and exciting titles? Romain, meanwhile, is co-founder and Creative Director of Games2Gether, a video game co-creation platform that brings the gaming community together and provides a platform for creators to swap ideas and collaborate on development. This further democratisation of the creative process puts budding developers first, enabling creators to swap ideas in a like-minded environment with no gatekeepers. “What people usually don't like when they try to interact with a team is they will feel that they're not being listened to… We have one million players, so it's hard to tell everyone to listen to everyone at any one time, but it's all about transparency.” And what Romain touches on here is something that is true when applied to gaming communities, dev communities and is a core principle of good games marketing to boot – with clarity, simplicity and openness the sector can maintain new and powerful channels of conversation and use the benefits thereof to build the games industry of the future. The Playable Futures Podcast accompanies Playable Futures, a collection of insights, interviews and articles from global games leaders sharing their visions of where the industry and medium will go next. For the latest episode of the Playable Futures Podcast, games journalist Will Freeman is joined by representatives from three of the many independent and mid-size studios that are currently making waves in the games industry. Playtonic Games business development manager Stephanie Darrah, nDreams CEO Patrick O'Luanaigh, and Nosebleed Interactive managing director Andreas Firnigl discuss how much the game space has changed in the past decade and what it means to be an indie in a world where their titles are vying for audiences' attention alongside AAA behemoths. With the landscape ever changing, many developers are becoming publishers themselves, taking their experiences of working with external parties to inform their own ventures into the space. “A lot of developers like us have become publishers because we've been through the process ourselves,” Stephanie explains. “We've developed a game from start to finish. We've done ports ourselves. We've had publishing partners and we know the next steps after development, like QA and localisation… We know the pitfalls and we know the milestones.” Community is integral to industry success too, with many publishers increasingly focusing on nurturing talent and sharing knowledge across the indie space. “We've been in those shoes and we know people who are now trying to be in those shoes,” Stephanie adds. “For us, it fits the model of the industry as a whole. It's about helping people. It's about trying to make it a better space… You connect with people who are needing that support and suddenly you're a consultant, or a publisher.” The Playable Futures Podcast accompanies Playable Futures, a collection of insights, interviews and articles from global games leaders sharing their visions of where the industry and medium will go next. A series of ten articles so far have been published on GamesIndustry.biz, with more planned. Playable Futures is a collaborative project brought to you in partnership with GI.biz, UKIE and Diva.
For the second outing of the Playable Futures Podcast, games journalist Will Freeman chats with Tommy Palm, founder and CEO of Resolution Games to reflect on the future of virtual reality. An industry veteran responsible for the enormous success of Candy Crush Saga, Palm has since shifted his focus to the world of virtual reality, courtesy of Ultimechs, Resolution's new multiplayer VR gaming experience. There are now more than ten million headsets in the market, so with VR well established as an accessible gaming platform, the barriers to entry are now significantly reduced. With the initial years of hype behind us, the format has begun to flourish on its own terms, becoming a fertile creative space for experimental games and ideas that were previously impossible to achieve. Palm reflects on VR's complete reinvention of the traditional gaming experience, which in many ways parallels the evolution he witnessed in the mobile gaming space. “One of the most exciting things about mobile games in the beginning was the touchscreen. It enabled direct control. You could see it so clearly with small children. They would touch the object they wanted to move. It was so incredibly intuitive and we have a little bit of that going on with VR.” Palm also discusses a world of creative possibilities that are only possible in VR. However wonderful and engaging the best games are, they still exist within the standard confines of gaming. VR continues to pioneer away from this, removing the need for a conventional controller-based experience in place of intuitive, responsive play that has continued to change the game. “You want more intricate interaction with games. Visually, they are stunning, but you want more interaction with your games. In VR you have hands, eye-tracking, and voice.” The Playable Futures Podcast accompanies Playable Futures, a collection of insights, interviews, and articles from global games leaders sharing their visions of where the industry and medium will go next. A series of ten articles so far have been published on GamesIndustry.biz, with more planned. Playable Futures is a collaborative project brought to you in partnership with GI.biz, UKIE, and Diva.

"In eight years' time, I'd like to see the video games industry being the greenest industry in the world and that the players that play games are coming to it, not just to escape, but to give back as well." The wider creative industries are increasingly looking to games for inspiration. After all, it's probably fair to say that gaming is now bigger than the Beatles – so why wouldn't the world of music and film be looking to video games for a steer on how to engage their audiences? In the first episode of the Playable Futures Podcast, games journalist Will Freeman – a regular GamesIndustry.biz contributor – speaks to the UN Environment's Chief of Education, Youth & Advocacy, Sam Barratt, about the United Nation's Playing for the Planet Alliance, and why the UN sees games as part of its mission's future. In this wide-ranging chat, Sam reflects on how the gaming sector can use its influence to shift the world from where we are to where it needs to be. As a medium that inspires and engages like no other, he discusses how games could encourage audiences to act and make a real difference. The gaming industry is experiencing rapid growth and right now the UK is the leading video game market in Europe and sixth globally. We've experienced multi-billion pound deals at the start of 2022 reinforcing the opportunity and appetite there is in the sector. However, as these gaming companies grow they need specific physical spaces to enable and support the production and creation of their products. As the industry continues to grow, where can we expect these gaming businesses to expand and can existing office stock be repurposed to provide studio space?Join Guy Ruddle and sector specialists: Rob Pearson from the Office Tenant Representation team, Emerging Trends Director Nicky Wightman and Sam Collins, Head of Commercial and Membership at UKIE, as they discuss how important it is for gaming companies to be located near talent and knowledge centres, what the specific real estate needs and requirements are for gaming companies, and how this can be met amid a shortage of stock.Further Informationhttps://www.savills.co.uk/blog/article/320050/commercial-property/the-growth-of-the-video-gaming-industry-and-the-vital-role-of-real-estate.aspxwww.ukie.org.ukwww.gamesmap.uk
“We feel grief. We feel anger. We feel sadness. We feel mobilized to help. We feel energized. But we feel that our life, it's not the same as it was before.” // “We're on a precipice and people will say why wasn't more done. This is about Ukraine right now, but may not stay about Ukraine. And so not doing anything, it's not an option.” While a tragedy continues to unfold in Ukraine, it remains...abstract ...for many of us. Something terrible happening in a faraway place to a faraway people. We see photos and videos online - a horror is happening to a people we do not know over there, and sadly, we find ourselves going back to our busy lives over here. Ukraine is a sovereign nation of 44 MILLION, with a rich, beautiful culture and people. There's more than another 10 Million folks of Ukrainian heritage living outside of the country, among one of the world's largest diaspora populations. We can't solve the Ukrainian crisis with our podcast. But what we can do is create more empathy and understanding. So we sat down with some Ukie friends - old and new - to learn about their Ukrainian heritage, their personal stories, and their very real feelings in this moment. Olesya Govorun was born in Kyiv, and lives in NY, and a longtime friend of Raman's. Adrianna Melnyk is a 3rd generation Ukrainian American, a non-profit professional active in the Ukrainian American community. Both are daughters, mothers, wives, and all around amazing people living through a unthinkable moment for them, and especially their countrymen. Hear their stories, because whether we know it or not, we are ALL Ukrainians. Originally developed for IBM PC compatibles, it was later ported to the Amiga, Atari ST, Macintosh, and Commodore 64. Set in the year 4620, the game puts players in the role of a starship captain sent to explore the galaxy. There is no set path, allowing players to switch freely between mining, ship-to-ship combat, and alien diplomacy. The broader plot of the game emerges slowly, as the player discovers that an ancient race of beings is causing stars to flare and destroy all living creatures. The team coded the game mostly in Forth with a few key routines written in x86 assembler. Forth was chosen since it is easier to use than assembler and more compact. This was important because the game had to fit into 128K of RAM. It took "fifteen man-years" and three actual years to develop the game. The group designed what they called a "fractal generator", which took six man-years to develop and allowed them to increase the number of planets in the game from 50 to 800. The game was one of the earliest to use procedurally generated content for planets and everything on them. The techniques used created a type of roguelike environment on each planet, with the contents randomly distributed. The story network was also one of the earliest examples of a sandbox game design. They created a separate ecosystem generator over the course of two man-years of work. The alien names were created by randomly combining syllables until they had names they liked, and their code for simulating communications was rewritten four times before completion. The game has been widely praised by both contemporary and modern critics. The game has been widely praised by both contemporary and modern critics. It led to the development of a sequel, Starflight 2: Trade Routes of the Cloud Nebula, and influenced the design of numerous other games for decades after its release17th August 2021 – Panda gives birth in Singapore - https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-08-17/giant-panda-gives-birth-in-rare-event-for-endangered-species/100385386 A Chinese giant panda at a Singapore wildlife park has given birth to a cub — the first born in the South-East Asian country and a rare event for an endangered species. Pandas Kai Kai, 13, and Jia Jia, 12, entered their seventh breeding season in April this year with the aid of artificial insemination, after arriving in Singapore in 2012 on a decade-long loan from China. Weighing about 200 grams, the cub was born on Saturday but the sex has yet to be determined, Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) told Reuters, adding mother and cub were doing well. WRS said female giant pandas can display hormonal and behavioural signs of pregnancy even when not pregnant, but the organisation detected signs last month that a cub was on the way and Jia Jia's pregnancy was confirmed on August 10. China has been sending its black and white ambassadors abroad in a sign of goodwill since the 1950s as part of what is known as "panda diplomacy".17th August 2021 – Creator and 'godfather' of Sudoku passes away at 69 - https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-08-17/sudoku-creator-dies/100385554 Maki Kaji, the creator of the popular numbers puzzle Sudoku whose life's work was spreading the joy of puzzles passed away. Known as the "Godfather of Sudoku," Mr Kaji created the puzzle to be easy for children and others who didn't want to think too hard. Its name is made up of the Japanese characters for "number" and "single," and players place the numbers one through nine in rows, columns and blocks without repeating them. Originally, Sudoku was called "Suji-wa-Dokushin-ni-Kagiru," which translates to, "Numbers should be single, a bachelor." It wasn't until 2004 that Sudoku became a global hit, after a fan from New Zealand pitched it and got it published in the British newspaper The Times. In recent years, Sudoku, believed to be the world's most popular pencil puzzle, has come out in digital versions. However, the film's legacy begins a little before that; in July 2006, Snakes on a Plane took its hilarious title and premise into San Diego Comic-Con and blew the roof off the place. There, fans and bloggers alike were wowed by the gory, fun footage. The event created huge buzz all over the internet and, as a result, people who got their film news online expected it to be an instant cult hit. Then it opened. While it did hit number one on its opening weekend, it barely grossed $14 million on its way to $34 million domestic (and $62 million international), which was way under expectations. The story is credited to David Dalessandro, a University of Pittsburgh administrator and first-time Hollywood writer. He developed the concept in 1992 after reading a nature magazine article about Indonesian brown tree snakes climbing onto planes in cargo during World War II. He originally wrote the screenplay about the brown tree snake loose on a plane, titling the film Venom. He soon revised it, expanding upon the premise to include a plague of assorted venomous snakes, then—crediting the film Aliens—revised it once again to include "lots of them loose in the fuselage of a plane." More than 450 snakes were used for filming to represent 30 different species of snakes. The different species include a 19-foot (5.8 m) Burmese python named Kitty (which the crew called Kong for film purposes), scarlet kingsnake (the non-venomous double for the eastern coral snake), milk snake, corn snakes, rattlesnakes, and mangrove snakes. The scarlet kingsnake and Pueblan milk snake stood in for coral snakes, while another species of milk snake and Florida kingsnake filled the role of the venomous Australian taipan (which attacks the couple having sex and the man using a restroom respectively). About two-thirds of the snakes seen throughout the film were either animatronic or CGI. The snakes that were real were mostly the non-venomous ones that are never seen attacking anyone. The scenes where someone is clearly bitten were often done with a mix of animatronic and animation. According to the DVD, all the snakes had production names, but only Scarface (an animated pit viper), Peanut (a cobra), and Kong are mentioned by name in the audio commentary. During filming, Samuel Jackson did not come into contact with any live snakes, due to a contract clause preventing snakes from being within 8 m (25 ft) of the actor. When the film was released in theaters, "pranksters" released two live western diamondback rattlesnakes at the AMC Desert Ridge 18 theater in Phoenix, Arizona during a showing of the film on August 22, 2006. One snake made its way into the lobby of the theater on its own, the other was found in the parking lot. No one was harmed and the snakes were released back into the desert.Remembrances17th August 2012 – Victor Poor - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_PoorAn American engineer and computer pioneer. At Computer Terminal Corporation (later renamed Datapoint Corporation), he co-created the architecture that was ultimately implemented in the first successful computer microprocessor, the Intel 8008. Subsequently, Computer Terminal Corporation created the first personal computer, the Datapoint 2200 programmable terminal. Poor continued his research and development, trying to develop a method for sending photographs and pictures wirelessly. In 1969 while working his notice period from Frederick Electronics, during the Thanksgiving holiday, Poor and fellow amateur radio colleague Harry Pyle produced the underlying architecture of the modern microprocessor on a living room floor. They then asked fellow radio amateur Jonathan Schmidt to write the accompanying communications software. Pitching the idea to both Texas Instruments and Intel, the partnership developed the Intel 8008, the forerunner of the microprocessor chips found in today's personal and computing devices. In late 1969, Poor joined start-up computer company Computer Terminal Corporation as Technical Director in San Antonio, Texas. Founded by two former NASA engineers, Phil Ray and Gus Roche, they asked him to approach Intel to see how much of his design could fit onto a computer chip. Pitching a $100,000 proposal to place the architecture onto silicon and into production, the project became the Intel 8008 master chip, the world's first 8-bit microprocessor. Poor and Pyle then developed the instruction set architecture which enabled Ray and Roche to design and develop the mass-produced programmable Datapoint 2200 computer terminal. As a result of the success of this product, the company changed its name to Datapoint. Datapoint remained one generation ahead of Intel until the Intel 80286. Overseeing the development of ARCNET by lead ARCNET architect John Murphy, an early local area network, Poor stayed with Datapoint until 1984, after they had lost their technical microchip lead to IBM and been bought out by corporate raiders. Poor died at the age of 79 in Palm Bay, Florida.Famous Birthdays17th August 1896 – Leslie Groves - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leslie_GrovesLieutenant General Leslie Richard Groves Jr. a United States Army Corps of Engineers officer who oversaw the construction of the Pentagon and directed the Manhattan Project, a top secret research project that developed the atomic bomb during World War II. He was involved in most aspects of the atomic bomb's development: he participated in the selection of sites for research and production at Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Los Alamos, New Mexico; and Hanford, Washington. He directed the enormous construction effort, made critical decisions on the various methods of isotope separation, acquired raw materials, directed the collection of military intelligence on the German nuclear energy project and helped select the cities in Japan that were chosen as targets. Groves wrapped the Manhattan Project in security but failed to prevent the Soviet Union from conducting a successful espionage program that stole some of its most important secrets. After the war, Groves remained in charge of the Manhattan Project until responsibility for nuclear weapons production was handed over to the United States Atomic Energy Commission in 1947. He then headed the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project, which had been created to control the military aspects of nuclear weapons. He was given a dressing down by the Army Chief of Staff, General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower, and told that he would never be appointed Chief of Engineers. The Manhattan Engineer District (MED) was formally established by the Chief of Engineers, Major General Eugene Reybold on 16 August 1942. The name was chosen by Groves and MED's district engineer, Colonel James C. Marshall. Like other engineer districts, it was named after the city where its headquarters was located, at 270 Broadway. Unlike the others, however, it had no geographic boundaries, only a mission: to develop an atomic bomb. He was born in Albany, New York.Events of Interest17th August 1978 – Double Eagle II becomes first balloon to cross the Atlantic Ocean when it lands in Miserey, France near Paris, 137 hours after leaving Presque Isle, Maine. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_Eagle_II Double Eagle II, piloted by Ben Abruzzo, Maxie Anderson and Larry Newman, became the first balloon to cross the Atlantic Ocean when it landed 17 August 1978 in Miserey near Paris, 137 hours 6 minutes after leaving Presque Isle, Maine. It can be regarded as a successful crossing at the point that the Double Eagle II crossed the Irish coast, on the evening of 16 August, an event that Shannon Airport notified the crew about when it happened. Newman originally intended to hang glide from the balloon to a landing, while Anderson and Abruzzo continued to fly, but the hang-glider had to be dropped as ballast earlier on 16 August. While flying over France, they heard by radio that authorities had closed Le Bourget Airfield, where Charles Lindbergh had landed, for them. The crew declined the offer as they were running out of ballast and it would be too risky (to themselves and anyone below) to pass over the suburbs of Paris. They landed in a field of barley, owned by Roger and Rachel Coquerel, in Miserey, 60 mi (97 km) northwest of Paris. Television images showed a highway nearby, its shoulders and outer lanes crowded with stopped cars, people sweeping across the farm field to the landing spot. The gondola was protected, but most of the logs and charts were stolen by souvenir hunters. The flight, the fourteenth known attempt, was the culmination of more than a century of previous attempts to cross the Atlantic Ocean by balloon. Some of the people who had attempted it were never found. Larry Newman won a draw among the three to sleep in the same bed at the United States Embassy that Lindbergh slept in. British balloonists Don Cameron and Christopher Davey feted the trio at a party that included a balloon shaped like the Double Eagle II. The trio and their wives planned to return to the United States aboard the supersonic Concorde. Upon the successful crossing, the trip was accommodated by Air France at no charge to the trio and spouses.17th August 1939- Buck Rogers premiered in Portugal - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0032290/ On this day in 1939 (in Portugal), Buck Rogers took a trip into the future after waking up from a long sleep. Here's the plot summary: "A 20th Century pilot named Buck Rogers and his young friend Buddy Wade awake from 500 years in suspended animation to find that the world has been taken over by the outlaw army of Killer Kane." In the original comic strip, Buck Rogers is actually a former World War One pilot who was working as a mine surveyor at the time he came to fall into his long (500 years long) sleep. For some reason, the regulations would not allow the screenwriters to use the comic strip's continuity, so the serial is actually a completely original story with the comic strip characters added. The character of Killer Kane was changed, too: in the original strip, his real name was Oba Kane, he had a twin brother named Nova and a pistol called "Baby". He also had a girlfriend named Ardala Valmar. The regulations would not allow any of this background to be used, either: instead, Oba "Killer" Kane is presented as the despotic ruler of a future Earth. This serial is probably based on an unofficial Flash Gordon story in which Flash Gordon travels to Saturn; this story was not and has never been part of the original Flash Gordon universe (it was illegally published in 1936). After the serial came out, a second origin appeared in the comic strip in which Buck fell into a crater while looking for a meteor made from impervium, an indestructible metal used in the making of spaceships. Due to having hit the meteor when he fell in, Buck released the gas from inside and it put him to sleep for 500 years, only to be found by scientists and awakened. Again, this origin took place on Earth and not in space. There was a character in the strip who was in stasis in a satellite for 500 years, but his name was Dr. Laika; the story was inspired by the launch of Sputnik II. This is the origin story used in Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1979). Henry Brandon hoped to play chief villain Killer Kane but was cast as Kane's henchman Captain Laska instead. When Brandon complained to his agent about this he was told, "The lead heavy works for one day, the henchman works for three weeks. Which part did you say you wanted again?" The film takes place in 1938 and 2440. It's Wednesday again! What? Already?! Time seems to be zooming by, dear listener. It's as if the universe itself wants to be rid of 2020! However, according to theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli, time is an illusion and the perception of its flow doesn't correspond to physical reality! Before the Big Bang there was no time! Or space, for that matter, but if there had been would that have meant the entire campaign of a recent Assassin's Creed game could be played through in an instant?! These questions, and many more, are not answered in this episode but Cyberpunk 2077 is out now and we have a good old natter about that amongst other, non-theoretical time-based shenanigans. We also have an SSG this week in the form of Sam Collins from UKIE! Don't forget that this coming Friday (18th December) is the (Online) Maraoke Xmas Party!! Business relations have declined between India and China following a border dispute. Users of the Chinese mobile app TikTok express frustration that they're no longer allowed to use the service since the Indian government banned it along with dozens of other apps. Renu Agal, Hindi editor at The Print explains the background to the row, whilst we get wider context from Dr Yu Jie, senior research fellow on China at Chatham House. Blockchain, czyli system oparty na technologii rozproszonego rejestru (DLT), to jedna z największych innowacji w gospodarce cyfrowej, która może umożliwić głębokie zmiany w modelach biznesowych i strukturach społecznych. Pozwala przeprowadzać transakcje online szybko i bezpiecznie, z pominięciem pośredników (np. banku) i kontroli administracji publicznej, a także zawierać cyfrowe umowy (smart contracts). W jakich branżach oprócz rynku kapitałowego, bankowości czy zakupu walut będzie można go zastosować? Odpowiedzi na te pytania udzieli prof. Włodzimierz Szpringer – ekspert w zakresie prawnych i społeczno-kulturowych problemów rozwoju informatyki. W świecie kryptowalut najbardziej interesują go realne możliwości wykorzystania otwartych blockchainów i śledzeniem zmian społecznych i biznesowych spowodowanych tą nową cyfrową rewolucją. prof. "You're going to get cancelled off the back of this!" - Sam Jordan, Shay, Sam, and UKIE’s CEO Jo Twist and Insight and Innovation Manager Luke Hebblethwaite talk about the UK Games Industry Census, a collaboration between the University of Sheffield (led by Dr Mark Taylor), the University of Leeds, and UKIE, with support from the Arts & Humanities Research Council. The 60-page report, using data from 3,200 UK games industry workers, suggests that the games industry is – compared to national averages – overwhelmingly young, white, male, middle class, queer, and experiencing anxiety and/or depression. Manhunt 2 became one of only two games to be denied an age rating by the BBFC when it attempted to release in 2007. Denying it an age rating for "sustained and cumulative casual sadism" amongst other reasons, it led to a notable court case between Take Two and the BBFC in what's been called the video games industry's Lady Chatterley's lover moment. But what precisely led to the initial decision to deny the game an age rating? And why, in the end, was Manhunt 2 able to receive a rating nearly a year later after lengthy back and forth in the courts? Vincent Scheurer, a long serving video game lawyer and current COO at Payload Studios, attended the court case. He explained the ins and outs of the case to us in the Ukie studio to help us answer those questions and much more. ———- You can listen to the 30 Years of Play podcast on Soundcloud, Acast, iTunes and Spotify.
