Thanks for leaving a 5 star review at iTunes! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ieltscast-weekly-shadowing-exercises-for-ielts-speaking/id1070129363 Get the FREE newsletter! https://ieltsielts.com/ Transcript: Do you work or are you a student? I'm a student pursuing a bachelor's degree in computer science at the University of Lisbon. Do you play video games? Yes, I do enjoy playing video games. I find it's a fantastic way to unwind and relax. What kind of games do you play? I have an eclectic taste in games, but I particularly enjoy strategic and simulation games. Titles like Civilization VI and Cities: Skylines are among my favourites. Do you have friends who are also into gaming? Yes. We regularly get together for multiplayer sessions and enjoy friendly competition. What types of games do you usually play with your friends? We typically engage in cooperative games or team-based multiplayer games. Games like Among Us or Overwatch are popular choices with us because these games can be played in less than 20 minutes and they allow us to work together as a team. Do you enjoy watching others play video games, like in live streams or gaming videos? Yes, I find it quite entertaining. It's a great way to learn new strategies, discover hidden game features, and also enjoy the unique personalities of the content creators. However, I'm very busy with my studies these days, so I don't tend to watch these types of videos very often. How much time do you typically spend gaming in a week? I try to strike a balance between my academic responsibilities and leisure activities. On average, I spend maybe five hours a week gaming. It serves as a rewarding break from my studies and allows me to stay connected with friends who share similar interests. Thank you.

We share our tips for getting started in a Civilization game and stories about some of the victories and losses we endured.

Nate, Sebastian, David, and newcomer Dan all convene to discuss SID MEIER'S CIVILIZATION VI, Firaxis's strategy masterpiece from 2016. We discuss the complex, layered systems, our favorite ways to let the game challenge us, and the problematic nature of tossing all the world's cultures into the same expansionist melting pot. Sebastian survives the apocalypse, Nate absolutely dominates the 1984 Olympic Games, and David repeatedly threatens to reveal how many hours Dan has clocked in the game on his Steam profile.

Firaxis Games has announced the development of a new Civilization game, which may be called Civilization VII. The upcoming game will be the first new mainline entry in the series since Civilization VI was released in 2016. Heather Hazen, the incoming studio head at Firaxis, said in a press release, “I'm thrilled to have this opportunity to carry on the studio's storied legacy, beginning with the announcement that Firaxis is in development on the next iteration of the legendary Civilization franchise. I'm lucky to be working with some of the best developers in our industry, and we have plans to take the Civilization franchise to exciting new heights for our millions of players around the world.” Although the game's release date is unclear, it is exciting news for fans of the series. Civilization games are turn-based strategy games where players lead a civilization from the Stone Age to the Modern Era, developing technologies, exploring the world, and engaging in diplomacy and warfare with other civilizations. Firaxis has a reputation for releasing high-quality strategy games, and the Civilization series is one of its most successful franchises. The games have sold over 50 million copies worldwide, and Civilization VI has received numerous awards and critical acclaim. While Ed Beach will continue to serve as creative director on the new Civilization, the company has also announced some key staffing changes. Longtime studio head Steve Martin and creative director Jake Solomon are leaving the company. It is unclear what impact this will have on the development of the game. It will be interesting to see what new features and improvements the new Civilization game will bring to the series. Civilization VI introduced new mechanics like unstacked cities, districts, and an updated research tree. The game was also praised for its graphics, music, and modding support. It's unclear what the new game will be called, what new features it will introduce, and when it will be released. However, the news that a new Civilization game is in development is exciting for fans of the series. It's a testament to the enduring appeal of the franchise that a new game is still highly anticipated even six years after the release of the last mainline entry. Source: The Verge

In the strategy game Civilization VI, where players choose world leaders to be their avatar, Qin Shihuang, the First Emperor of China, has one goal in mind: building wonders (like the Great Wall of China). His workers can build wonders faster and more cheaply, and he hates leaders that build more wonders than he does. That largely corresponds to how people in the West think of the First Emperor: powerful, responsible for unifying China, despotic–and focused on building great works like the Great Wall and the Terracotta. Civilization VI isn't one of the many works detailed in Anthony Barbieri's most recent book, The Many Lives of the First Emperor of China (University of Washington Press: 2022). But it does explore the many ways the life of Qin Shihuang has been represented in books, historical works, mythology, political narratives, movies, tv shows and, yes, video games. We welcome Anthony back to the show to talk about the First Emperor, and how different writers, politicians, and producers portrayed the different aspects of his life. Anthony J.
