Vikings vs Lions - We Expect Better | Two Old Bloggers

Climbing The Pocket

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 25, 2022 73:55

On this Two Old Bloggers, the Minnesota Vikings got humiliated on Monday Night Football when the Philadelphia Eagles ran all over the team and the offense had ‘bad' Kirk show up. As Glover Quin said earlier in the week, the key to winning against the Vikings isn't to take Justin Jefferson and Adam Thielen out; it is to take the run game out by scoring early and, most importantly, the biggest of keys… make Kirk Cousins uncomfortable. Do that and everything will fall in place. We all knew that the defense was going to be the weaker of the two units, but the offense needed to make up the difference, and by no means did they do that. We expect better! Are you worried about the results? How about the early results from Kwesi Adofo-Mensah's 2022 draft class? The Vikings' #1 draft pick has not seen any significant time. Sunday against the Lions with Harrison ‘Hitman' Smith already being called out, you'd think he would get the start but it looks 5th rounder Josh Metellus will get the call. Does that bother you? We expect better! Then the second pick, Andrew Booth, has yet to be healthy enough to get on the field and already has been passed on the depth chart. We expect better! Then comes in the #1 scoring and #1 run game to date, this season in the Detroit Lions. Is it luck or that big head fake that will have Lion's fans shaking their heads as a start that seemed promising suddenly goes down the drain like season after season? Has Dan Campbell actually got the team on the right track and the Vikings are to be their next victims? We expect better! Darren and Dave will break this matchup down. Can the Vikes bounce back? Can the Lions play well away from home? You decide. Here are the themes for the show: Theme #1: Should we be worried about what happened Monday night? Theme #2: The Class of 2022 has been quiet so far Theme #3: Lions vs Vikings preview Darren Campbell and David Stefano are the Two Old Bloggers. Wake me up when the season starts. After two weeks of second and third-stringers, it is time to either get the starters in the game to knockoff the rust or go watch the Twins. The Vikings' offense was under whelming against the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday at U.S. Bank Stadium. After a week of hearing about fireworks and some great plays (and fiery words from one Kirk Cousins), we didn't get to see the starters and the Vikings lost 17-7. Talk about a buzzkill. Nick Mullens joins the Vikings so we can skip talking about the regression from second-year quarterback Kellen Mond, who had some flashes but then threw two bad picks. Sean Mannion was more of the same, some moments bracketed by less than stellar play. (Although a nice throw up the seam to Zach Davidson, who dropped it on his way to a huge gain, could have changed our impression of Mannion.) And rookie corner back Andrew Booth, Jr., left the game limping badly on an injured ankle. The defense played well and several of them distinguished themselves: Ty McGill (1.5 more sacks); LB Brian Asamoah shined again and looks like the real deal; and Ty Chandler ran his way into our hearts once again with a decent performance. And Mark Craig from the Star Tribune will be on hand at the Vikings Territory Breakdown podcast to discuss all of the above with co-host Joe Oberle, senior writer from VT and purplePTSD.com. They certainty spice up the doldrums of more preseason football to come. There are only three preseason games this year and still the regular season can't come soon enough. There is one more exhibition game next week in Denver—hopefully the starters can take the field to get in the swing of things before the season opener against the Packers. But the VT Breakdown pod fellas are in mid-season (well, mid-preseason form, anyway) so tune in and check it out.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Vikings Territory Breakdown: Preseason Begins—Vikes Get Beat in Vegas, But all is not Lost

The Vikings travelled to Las Vegas this past weekend, not to bet on themselves to win the Super Bowl (they can't do that, the betting part, I mean), but to face the Raiders in their first preseason game of the 2022season. There was good, there and was bad and there was not so pretty, but the Vikings although losers on the scoreboard, were winners in that the team finished the tilt fairly healthy (let that be the first healthy mention of the show). They also gave us plenty to talk about on the Vikings Territory Breakdown podcast with VT senior writer Joe Oberle and Star Tribune Vikings and NFL writer Mark Craig. Some of our early perceptions were realized(Lewis Cine is fast, active and a hard hitter) and some of them demand more consideration(Kellen Mond played well enough at times to make us think that maybe, just maybe, the new regime can salvage him from Zimmer's scrap heap). There is now a new running back battle going as Kene Nwangwu and rookie Ty Chandler both splashed, flashed and dashed against the(admittedly) second or third string Raiders defense. Nonetheless, their proficiency had Twitter all atwitter about putting Alexander Mattison on the trading block for a center or back up QB, perhaps (good luck), because the RB room is pretty deep. We will dive into this topic. The illegal contract penalty reared its ugly head as it has become a point of emphasis for referees this season, and the Vikings had three in the first half. Notably, rookie corner back Andrew Booth, Jr., had one on his way to a slightly disappointing performance after all the attention he has received early in camp. Booth will turn it around, as he gets used to the league and the position, but many of us were probably hoping for more. We did get more out of linebacker Brian Asamoah and less out of backup QB Sean Mannion, both of which will be discussed on the podcast. Tune into the VT Breakdown podcast and check out our assessment as the Vikings first preseason of the season and get ready for number two this week.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's Week 2 of Vikings Training Camp at TCO Performance Center in Eagan, and it's time to let the hitting begin. The Vikings put the pads on for the first time this season and it wasn't a moment too soon for rookie corner back Andrew Booth, Jr., who had already been mixing it up with his new team's wide receivers last week in camp.   Booth covered Justin Jefferson last week and made a couple nice plays (including a diving interception) and this week he angered wide out Bisi Johnson, who is battling to make the team, and the pair had to be separated, according to training camp reports. Mark Craig NFL Insider and longtime Vikings writer for the Stat Tribune, has already come out and declared Booth to be a standout at camp and the odds-on favorite to grab a starting corner position. It will be interesting to hear what Craig has to say about Booth after seeing him in pads for the first time. Craig will let us know (and what other players are getting a lot of first team reps and garnering a lot of steam on the Vikings Territory Breakdown podcast this week. He will be joined by co-host Joe Oberle (from VT and purplePTSD.com) to discuss some of the other happenings from Week 2 at camp. We know Craig is anxious to talk about the new suggestion to fans and media from Vikings brass to not film any of the plays in practice at TCO as those videos in the hands of the Vikings competition just might put the hometown team at a competitive disadvantage (of course that doesn't take into consideration that any team opponent's scout could come to practice and make their own videos. Does this smack of some Zimmer-era clandestine ops (such as never talking about injuries) or is that just run of the mill paranoia from any new or old coach in the NFL. It should be fun to hear what Craig has to say on that. We will also talk about the news that former Vikings defensive end Jared Allen will be put into the Vikings Ring of Honor at U.S. Bank Stadium this season. The former “skullet-wearing” quarterback roping' sack master will be getting his due on October 30 (during the Vikings-Cardinals game) and the VT Breakdown lads will be giving him his due this week. Inspired by Will Ragatz's piece earlier in the week, it turns out The Needle overall looks pretty damn effective as a cornerback. This is both against the pass and especially against the run. That is something the Ed Donatell defense will need. Exactly how effective was he? Is Dantzler the best CB on the team? What does that mean for Patrick Peterson and first-round draft pick Andrew Booth? We take a deep dive and deep thoughts on the forgotten players. Who are they? They are the ones chosen in mid to late rounds by the previous administration that saw little or no time in games. Are they worth their selections if they were just long-term prospects? Were they just ignored by Mike Zimmer who was in win-now mode and Rick Spielman went rogue? 2OB will look at those great unknowns. DJ Wonnum had the most sacks of his career last year. A lot of fans think that he's a rising star because of it, but is he? Could he be forgotten when all is said and done at the end of training camp? What does Ed Donatell want him to do? What does he need to do to convert to a 3-4 defensive outside linebacker, a rush edge? Can he do it?   Darren Campbell and David Stefano are the Two Old Bloggers. We continue counting down to the 2022 NFL Draft with former Cincinnati Bengals safety Solomon Wilcots on Dave Lapham In The Trenches presented by First Star Logistics. In Part One, Wilcots and Lapham discussed how free agency might have changed the Bengals' direction where they're scheduled to make their first selection with the 31st pick in the first round of the draft. Part Two finds the discussion turning towards the positions and players the Bengals could look to fill or pick on the first night of the draft. If the Bengals look to cornerback, standouts Sauce Gardner, Derek Stingley Jr., and Trent McDuffie are expected to be off the board by the 31st pick. However, Kaiir Elam, Andrew Booth, and Kyler Gordon might be available. If not cornerback, maybe the Bengals look at safety with players like Dax Hill, Lewis Cine, and Jalen Pitre possible targets, or perhaps a move towards the offensive line with players like Tyler Smith (Tulsa), Zion Johnson (Boston College), Kenyon Green (Texas A&M), Bernhard Raimann (Central Michigan) and Iowa center Tyler Linderbaum who many compare to NFL standout Jason Kelce.

¿A quién podríamos elegir? Sabes, me gusta mucho McBride. Tal vez me sorprenda. Me ayuda. Obviamente. Me encanta, tío. Me encanta escuchar esas cosas. Chris Carter, NFL and NCAAF analyst, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast and is joined by Tony Serino of the AFC North Talk show. Ahkello Witherspoon spoke with Pittsburgh media Monday and looks to be the Steelers' biggest free agency add to the cornerback room. But is that the last addition at cornerback this offseason? Currently the top cornerbacks would be Witherspoon, Cam Sutton, Levi Wallace, Arthur Maulet, James Pierre and Justin Layne. None of those players are guaranteed CB1 options for a defense that wants to be an elite group in 2022, so does that mean another addition has to be coming? The addition of a player like Stephon Gilmore is highly unlikely and Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner most likely gets picked very high in the NFL Draft. But both LSU's Derek Stingley Jr. and Clemson's Andrew Booth Jr. could be players who slip to the Steelers' 20th overall pick. If that happens, do Mike Tomlin and Kevin Colbert make the move to add them at cornerback? Doing so would give the Steelers a potential cornerback star for the future and would be the highest graded prospect at cornerback to come to the team in the draft in decades. Meanwhile, the Steelers have signed Genard Avery to help with the edge rusher group. What does the former Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns linebacker bring to the table? A really athletic skill set to back up T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith. But is that enough? Taco Charlton should still be on a call list for the Steelers to complete the edge rusher depth group. Finally, after Colbert and Matt Canada visited the North Carolina Pro Day to see Sam Howell, the Steelers have made the rounds to all the NFL Draft's top quarterbacks. 1. Do you think Malik Willis is worth a roll of the dice in the first round, if not the top-10 picks and if so, why? 2. Based on what you have seen on tape, what is your opinion of Matt Corral and how does he project to the NFL? 3. What makes Kayvon Thibodeaux so special and what (aside from this talent poor QB class) makes him worthy of the #1 overall pick? 4. Currently, it looks as if there is going to be a tight race to be the second EDGE off the board between Michigan's Aidan Hutchinson and Purdue's George Karlaftis. At this time, which one of those two stud Big Ten pass rushers do you like better and why? 5. What makes Evan Neal stand out from the rest of this talented OT class and do you think he has a legit case to be in the conversation for the #1 overall pick? 6. Arguably THE deepest position group in this year's draft class is at CB. Although LSU's Derek Stingley, Jr. is regarded as the best of the bunch, two other corners that are impressing tremendously are Andrew Booth, Jr. of Clemson and Kaiir Elam of Florida. Would it either shock or surprise you if both of the latter joined Stingley as top-10 picks and/or make an equally compelling case to be the first corner off the board? 7. It is pretty rare that we see a safety selected in the top five, but 2022 could very well be anomaly with Notre Dame's Kyle Hamilton. What qualifies Kyle Hamilton to be the exception to the rule of not drafting a safety super high in the draft? 8. Do you think Jahan Dotson has already made a solid case to be considered the best WR in the 2022 NFL Draft? 9. Buy or Sell -Jameson Williams (WR, Alabama) -Kenny Pickett (QB, Pittsburgh) -Travon Walker (DE, Georgia) -Zion Johnson (G, Boston College) -Bernhard Reimann (OT, Central Michigan) 10. Top-10 Mock 1. Lions: Kayvon Thibodeaux 2. Texans: Malik Willis 3. Jaguars: Evan Neal 4. Jets: Derek Stingley, Jr. 5. Giants: Aidan Hutchinson 6. Eagles: Kyle Hamilton 7. Falcons: DeMarvin Leal 8. Washington: Matt Corral 9. Eagles: Kaiir Elam 10. Giants: Kenyon Green
