In the final episode of the polarization series, Kurt and Tim delve into "affective polarization," where emotional distrust, rather than ideological differences, has deepened the divide between political parties. Drawing on insights from the recent MIT conference, they explore how these negative feelings have escalated over time. Stanford postdoc Jan Voelkl shares eye-opening research showing a marked decline in positive feelings across party lines over the past few decades. But there's hope on the horizon! Kurt and Tim explore proven interventions aimed at reducing polarization by fostering cooperation and shared identities. Through game-based approaches and collaborative strategies, they demonstrate that cross-party cooperation is not only possible but achievable. Featured researcher Josh Green explains how his game-based method helps bridge the partisan divide, offering an optimistic outlook for improving political discourse. The duo also speaks with Kati Kirsch Bar-On, a postdoc at MIT, who provides a philosophical perspective on polarization and how we engage with one another, while Yph Lelkes offers historical context and a dose of optimism for the future based on the 2022 election results. The series concludes with a compassionate, forward-thinking conversation, offering practical strategies to critically assess polarized messaging and steps toward healing the growing political divide. © 2024 Behavioral Grooves Topics [0:00] Introduction: A final look at polarization  [4:07] Hope for American democracy - Jan Voelkl [12:23] Game-based interventions - Josh Greene [20:28] Polarization: a philosophical perspective - Kati Kish Bar-On [28:28] History and hope: Yph Lelkes [31:54] Grooving session - America, democracy, and critical thinking [41:30] BONUS TRACK: Young scientists look at polarization - Miles and Isaac Rand © 2024 Behavioral Grooves Links Kati Kish Bar-on Jan Voelkl Josh Greene Yph Lelkes  Register to Vote Here!

Are we more divided than ever? How can people see past their differences and come together for the greater good? In this three-part series, Kurt and Tim explore the psychology behind the rise of political polarization in the United States. Tracing its roots back to the late 60s and 70s, they examine how the advent of cable news has played a pivotal role in shaping today's divisive landscape. With insights from researchers around the globe, this episode highlights key findings from interviews conducted at MIT's Polarization and Politicization conference. Experts from around the world discuss the critical role of perception and how digital platforms can either foster constructive dialogue or deepen the divide between opposing sides. Polarization is complex—it's a persistent and growing trend we can no longer ignore. If you're curious about understanding not only the nature of polarization but also how to combat it, this episode offers a hopeful perspective on promoting cooperation and a shared sense of reality.  Tune in next week for Parts 2 and 3 of this thought-provoking series! © 2024 Behavioral Grooves Topics  [0:00] History of Polarization [2:25] MIT's Polarization Conference [6:00] Understanding Polarization: Sandy Pentland [15:39] Misinformation: David Rand [27:45] Meta-perceptions and propaganda: Mina Cikara [36:10] Why do we lack a shared reality? By carefully considering the structure, people, and content, Groove aims to create environments that promote serendipity, connection, and memorable experiences, both online and offline. Interdependence in Remote Work: The conversation explores the concept of interdependence, highlighting how Groove helps individuals move beyond codependence and independence to a more collaborative and supportive state. This transition is crucial for remote workers who often face isolation and the challenge of finding a sense of community and shared purpose. Groove embodies this philosophy by fostering environments where individuals can support each other through structured interactions, building relational capacities that are often undervalued in traditional professional settings. Nonlinear Nature of Business Success: The episode touches on the inherent nonlinearity of business success, challenging the conventional focus on measurable inputs and outputs. Both Josh and Stewart discuss how serendipity, experimentation, and the emergent nature of reality play crucial roles in shaping successful outcomes, emphasizing the importance of embracing uncertainty and complexity. Creating Safe, Diverse Spaces for Remote Workers: Groove's approach to remote work prioritizes creating safe, inclusive spaces where diverse perspectives can thrive. With a significant portion of its user base being women, Groove offers a nurturing environment that balances familiarity with the excitement of meeting new people, ultimately helping remote workers build meaningful connections and a sense of belonging.

Musings about Ourselves and Other Strangers

In this episode, guest Professor Joshua Greene and host Charlie Bresler hit upon an important question — and have somewhat different answers. Many of us claim to be pretty “moral” human beings with an admirable set of values. But do we always live up to it? Obviously not, or we likely wouldn't need police or lawyers or jails. The question Josh and Charlie found thornier is the why. Why don't we live up to our professed values? According to Charlie, it seems we simply learn to suppress our better angels when they aren't convenient or comfortable. Sure, it may cause cognitive dissonance to pass by a hungry homeless person, but somehow we manage. For Josh, the reason may be more embedded in our survival instinct. We have evolved to live in relatively small groups of friends and family, and our nobler intentions don't always extend beyond that circle. Universal cooperation just isn't in our genetic makeup. Which is it? Nature, nurture, or a smidge of both? Whatever, the larger question here — and the one they agree on — is how do we overcome our smaller, more selfish behavior to help anyone in need? Josh Greene is an experimental psychologist, neuroscientist, philosopher, and professor at Harvard University . He studies how humans make moral judgments and decisions, but includes a very science-based perspective: primarily behavioral experiments and functional neuroimaging (fMRI). On this episode, we have a powerful dialogue with our guest, Josh Greene about what it really takes to build your reputation online and do legendary marketing in the digital world. Josh Greene is the CEO of The Mather Group. In a world of digital marketing BS, sophomores hacks and self-congratulatory vanity metrics, Josh is the real deal. Welcome to Lochhead on Marketing. The number one charting marketing podcast for marketers, category designers, and entrepreneurs with a different mind. Josh Greene on Marketing and Reputation Management The episode starts off with a discussion about marketing trends and reputation management with Josh Greene. They touch upon the impact of AI on marketing strategies and delve into reputation management techniques. Christopher highlights how individuals with negative reputations try to bury their past misdeeds in online search results. Josh explains that reputation management involves manipulating search engine rankings to push down negative content and make it less visible, while at the same time providing more positive information about you or your company. They also touch on the evolving landscape of SEO (Search Engine Optimization), with Josh emphasizing that SEO is not dead but constantly changing. He notes that traditional SEO tactics, such as keyword optimization, have evolved due to changes in Google's algorithms and the increasing importance of AI-driven queries. Josh Greene on what is the Internet thinking about you They also discuss the topic of the evolving landscape of SEO and the impact of AI, particularly in large language models like ChatGPT and Bard. As mentioned earlier, Josh highlights how SEO has evolved beyond optimizing for Google to also include considerations for AI-driven queries. He then emphasizes the importance of managing one's online reputation in this context. On the topic of AI, Christopher shares his experience with ChatGPT, mentioning how it produced relevant results related to category design, which led him to ponder the connection between AI training data, the internet's content, and these AI models' abilities to provide meaningful information. He also mentions that experts in various fields, including category design, are actively teaching AI models to enhance their understanding and capabilities. Josh Green on how to stand out from the crowd They then discuss how to stand out in the digital landscape, particularly in the context of AI and SEO. Josh explains that AI models like those used by Google rely on credible sources, with Wikipedia and Google's patent tool being primary sources. He emphasizes that credibility, links, and signals play a significant role in determining the relevance of content for AI models. Much like in SEO, authoritative content with strong signals will have a more substantial impact. Christopher adds that AI is evolving similarly to SEO and mentions that some individuals are already trying to exploit AI for personal gain by selling courses on how to manipulate AI models. He highlights the importance of providing valuable content to help people rather than merely trying to stay ahead of trends or exploit emerging technologies. They both agree that the key to success in the digital age, whether in AI or SEO, is delivering valuable content and expertise to genuinely assist others rather than chasing quick fixes or trends promoted by self-proclaimed gurus. They also note that having a real impact requires substance and credibility, not just buzzwords. Josh's career itself follows a wavy path — after working as an engineer, he studied meditation as a way to combat his burnout, spending time learning at ashrams in India. He brought together his spiritual practices with bringing people together through cultural events and programming as Managing Director at London's Village Underground and working on festivals like Wilderness Festival. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Josh and his co-founders saw that the world had changed, along with our traditional work systems. We had the opportunity to hop on the phone with Josh Greene, the director for his film that will be screening at the festival-- Waves Apart. Waves Apart | March 26, 2023 | 10:00 AM | Maryland Hall (Main) After moving from his Jewish community in Chicago to the small surf town of San Clemente in middle school, Josh Greene became one of the only Jewish kids in his entire town. Josh was bullied and ridiculed for his Jewish heritage, so he decided to find solace in the coolest possible thing he could do as a twelve-year-old San Clemente boy: he took up surfing. Fast forward ten years, and Josh is now an avid surfer. However, Josh was never quite able to leave his Jewish roots behind as new hate groups continue to rise in the United States, with antisemitic rallies happening in his own Southern California backyard. After finding swastikas carved into surfboards at a surf museum, Josh looks back at the sport that once allowed him to fit in. He uncovers California's long, strange history with anti-semitism and how the world's oldest form of hatred has found a home in surfing. By speaking with historians, journalists, and pro surfing legends, like Shaun Tomson and Izzy Paskowitz, Josh personally confronts the hidden underbelly of surfing before discovering new signs of light and community that can help combat the darkness of the sport. Have a listen! Tickets and passes are on sale now for the 11th Annual Annapolis Film Festival.

In this episode of the Thoughtful Entrepreneur, your host Josh Elledge speaks with the CEO of https://themathergroupllc.com/ (The Mather Group), Josh Greene.  The Mather Group is an organization focused on three things: SEO (search engine optimization), paid media, and Wikipedia. Josh Elderedge and Josh Greene discuss Wikipedia and how they help big companies understand what Wikipedia is or isn't, what expectations should be, and what to do with the material currently out there. Josh Elderedge expresses that nearly anyone can contribute to Wikipedia and the intricacies that can come with a collaborative platform.  Josh and Josh discuss the process of pages being deleted on Wikipedia and how that happens. Josh Greene shares how it's not enough to just publish a page, it's also how relevant that page stays. He discusses the process where a page will be nominated for deletion, from there it is a week to ten days of debate over whether the page is relevant. Josh Greene shares that often the page is deleted.  Josh Eldredge asks Josh Greene about notability tests and at what point Wikipedia would consider notability enough to warrant a page. Josh Greene shares how Wikipedia has tons of documentation and how it is very good at their rules and regulations. Josh Greene expresses for new pages the big hurdle of notability is that there needs to be a number of mainstream profiles of someone without quoting that person.  Josh Eldredege asks Josh Greene about his work in reputation management and the weight that wikipedia has in google's eyes. Josh Eldredge focuses on reputation issues and how that situation is mitigated or dealt with. Josh Greene expresses how every situation is a little bit different. He explains how sometimes there may be a situation where it now takes up 8 of 10 Google results and how that may not paint a fair picture of what's going on. Josh Greene discusses clients and how often they hear from people that are either currently in a crisis or just got out of a crisis. He shares how generally it's easier to maintain when doing so in advance but that often people wait until the situation is exasperated before looking to address it.  Josh and Josh discuss online presence and how keeping it up to date gives you a solid base. When being a bigger company, a lot of your profiles will be highly visible. Josh Greene shares how when the online presence is stronger, it's less likely for a negative story to take a headline as there's additional information to filter through.  Want to learn more?
