Peter 'Pistol' Hooley has an incredibly powerful basketball story that provides real insight into majority of athlete's endeavour's to the top of their field. This podcast isn't just for the Basketball fan as the show entails working through challenges, setbacks and how to push through to see the good in everything. Pistol won an NBL championship with Melbourne United and was what I like to call him a 'College legend' as you will hear some incredible stories in the show. In between those two points it's fair to say Peter Hooley had to fight for everything he got which makes him really admirable but also gives this shower for everyone's learning. We also review the NBA season that was and the NBA Finals that saw the Boston Celtic's triumph. It was so much and fun very detailed around what fighting what you want can look like.Hit Subscribe or follow on our channels below!Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/theunlacedpodcast/ TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@theunlacedpodcast?lang=en Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/unlacedpodcast/ Improve your mental performance, immune system and overall health with Organic Reflection, I've been loving the product and making it part of my everyday. On this week's podcast, we're talking about something that I haven't talked much about at all on the show: sexuality. Thankfully, since this is not my speciality, I'm joined by Esther Hooley, a psychologist who presented a really informative workshop that I attended a few months ago on sexuality and eating concerns. Esther is a psychologist in Waco, TX and practices telehealth across the U.S. She has been a therapist for over a decade and has worked in group practices, university counseling centers, IOP/PHP for eating disorders, and private practice. Esther has spent the past three years receiving advanced training and supervision in sex therapy. This, coupled with her early training in trauma and spirituality, has led her to find her therapy "home" at the intersection of sexuality, trauma, and spirituality. Esther recently finished writing her first book, Embracing Erotic Wholeness: From Shame to Curiosity, on sexuality and purity culture. On this episode, we started our conversation on what exactly is sexuality. We then went on to discuss such topics as: What shapes one's sexuality Common myths about sexuality, including: The frequency of sex (i.e. believing "everyone is having sex all of the time, and they're having more than I'm having") The myth of spontaneous desire Feeling responsible for sexually satisfying one's partner One's sexual and gender orientations are fixed Myths about sexual satisfaction The connection between shame and restriction How to become more embodied during sexual experiences Esther also talked about the Good-Enough Sex Model, a model of sexuality created by Barry McCarthy that she uses with clients. Here's the link to a podcast episode with the creator of the model. We also talked about Purity Culture, a "painful, powerful" movement that came about in the 1990s that created a set of rules surrounding sex and sexuality. Esther noted that Purity Culture "really divided people from themselves and their wants and even their higher power." And again, she's written a new book on the topic--head here to check it out! Esther shared how she helps people get unstuck in their sexuality and look at "what are the things I'm scared of looking at, and feeling, and experiencing when it comes to sexuality." She suggested looking at the "sexual script" you were given and really noticing what actually fits for you and what doesn't. She gave the example of herself being told that women should be submissive and quiet, and that their job is to give their bodies for other peoples' pleasure and use. She reevaluated this script for herself and created a new narrative. Within this process, she asked a great question: "If I knew everything would be ok, what would I want?" And finally, we talked about what therapists can do to feel more comfortable discussing sexuality with our clients (which of course starts with our own work!). Esther suggested asking clients the questions that began this email: What's your relationship with your sexuality? What's your relationship with your body? What's your relationship with pleasure? This is such an important topic, and I'm so thankful to Esther for coming onto the show to discuss it. Take a listen! The Psychology of Self-Injury: Exploring Self-Harm & Mental Health
The term "self-harm" is an umbrella term, encompassing a broad range of behaviors, under which is included substance abuse and misuse, eating disorders, suicide, and nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI). In this episode, Dr. Brianna Turner from the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada discusses how often self-damaging behaviors, including risky sex, financial and physical recklessness, co-occur with NSSI and where NSSI fits within the umbrella of self-harming behaviors. She also simplifies research using structural models of self-damaging behaviors in a way that helps us understand the co-occurrences of potentially harmful coping behaviors.Learn more about Dr. Turner and her work in the Risky Behaviour Lab at the University of Victoria here, and access many of her publications at https://uvic.academia.edu/BriannaTurner. What goes on at the neurobiological level that makes someone more vulnerable to self-injure or self-harm? What biological risk factors are at play? What roles do the vagus nerve, cortisol levels, and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis have? We hope to discuss the psychology of self-injury pain in a future episode, but in this episode, Dr. Michael Kaess from the University of Bern in Switzerland explains the neurobiology of self-injury in simple terms, or what we hope can be considered simple layman's terms. The true example of a Renaissance Man, or a person who is great with many talents or areas of knowledge, Conrad Gessner joins the ranks of herbalists like William Turner and John Gerard as not only influences on Shakespeare, but examples of the influence of Renaissance thought on life in Elizabethan England. Gessner's works were printed prolifically and consumed regularly in England, most likely by Shakespeare himself. Having completed over 70 publications in his lifetime, Conrad Gessner is a powerhouse of information and his surviving works provide vital links to the mindset and understanding of the world from the Renaissance. Here today to share with us what Conrad Gessner was like, the works he completed, and exactly how it is we are supposed to spell his name, is our guest Dan Hooley.
If you live in the US or Canada, you may have noticed a movement to acknowledge local indigenous groups who've historically lived in a particular territory. For example, Tasha and I live in Toronto, Ontario, which is also where our nonprofit meditation community group – The Consciousness Explorers Club or "CEC" – operates. These days, at the beginning of every CEC retreats and meditation sits, even our virtual events, we say some version of "The CEC operates on the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and the Mississaugas of the Credit, and is covered by Treaty 13." We say this as a way to situate us in an actual physical place. And we say it because we support the movement of truth, justice and reconciliation for Indigenous peoples in this country. It's been too long in coming. In today's episode, we explore the inner practice of territory and ancestor acknowledgement. Our guide, Warren Hooley, comes from a mixed indigenous and western background. He lives in the Syilx (Okanagan) Territory in Penticton, British Columbia, where he runs workshops on Facilitation, Indigenous Allyship, and Compassionate Communication. He also teaches at the Consciousness Explorers Club. Warren has really wrestled with this question of why territory acknowledgment matters, and how to engage with it in a way that is real and meaningful for the practitioner. His beautiful guided practice is really a ceremony, complete with drum and singing. It has three parts: an acknowledgment of local indigenous groups, an exploration of our own ancestral roots, and finally connecting in a personal way with our own local landscape.Warren's 21-minute practice starts at 7:00 and ends at 28:00.Links:• Warren's bio: http://cecmeditate.com/faculty/warren-hooley/Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/explorerspod)
