Guest Matt Ence is a teacher at Bountiful High School in Bountiful, UT. Matt retired from the military in 2017, when he began his teaching career. He teaches a course on the Holocaust, as well as courses in AP World History and US History. Matt became a Museum Teacher Fellow at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in 2023. Summary Matt discusses teaching a dedicated Holocaust course. He covers the chronology of events from Hitler's rise to post-liberation challenges using survivor testimonies, primary sources, and interactive activities. Matt emphasizes personalizing the Holocaust beyond statistics, exploring collaborators and bystanders alongside perpetrators, and connecting this history to other genocides to help students recognize warning signs and develop empathy for different groups. Three Important Takeaways Teaching chronologically helps students understand cause-and-effect relationships in Holocaust history, while personal testimonies humanize the statistics of 6 million victims. Holocaust education should include an examination of four groups: perpetrators, collaborators, bystanders, and rescuers, showing the complexity of human choices during this period. Connecting Holocaust history to other genocides helps students recognize warning signs and potentially prevent future atrocities through informed action. She is an amazing wife and mother to her children and treats her students with a level of sincere respect and kindness that is rarely seen. Ask any student that has spent time with Mrs. Goldberg and you will hear something positive. She is loved by students and her many work colleagues. Today we talked about kindness, a rising epidemic of negativity and why Colorado is such a cool place to live and go to college. Maya has a very intense vocabulary which stems from her love of reading and being an overall really smart person. There were times in this interview that I had to look up a few words on my trusty pocket thesaurus. In the end, we had a really fun and honest conversation that I think people can enjoy and maybe even learn from. I truly enjoyed this Interview!

This week, Rachel discusses with special guests, Dani, Arnav, and Aidan about the AP World History test, what they've done to prepare, how they feel about the new format, and talk about their favorite AP World memories. The next episode will again be on Thursdays as we travel from early societies and onto our first empire: Persia! *Just an explanation! - Our district does a pre-AP World class in 9th grade which discusses history until the Mongols where we move onto AP World in 10th grade and talk from the Mongols to the present day. Kids in our school have the ability to take the first class and then drop out or not take the first one and put themselves in the second (but it's a lot more work). We don't have an AP European History course but instead, we take APUSH in 11th and Government in 12th. The regular history class in 9th and 10th grade has a totally different curriculum and acts similarly to an AP Euro but easier. Also, a huge thanks to Dani, Arnav, and Aidan for being amazing people and doing this and shoutout to everyone mentioned (you are the ones who have made AP World amazing)!* Leave a review on Spotify, Apple Podcast, or wherever you listen to podcasts to help spread the word! You can also leave a voice message that can be used to give a shoutout to someone, ask a question, or help by fixing pronunciation or a fact and all will be mentioned next week during the break.
